We report the first identification of a compact dense galaxy overdensity at $z\sim8$ dubbed A2744z8OD. A2744z8OD consists of eight $Y$-dropout galaxies behind Abell 2744 that is originally pinpointed by Hubble Frontier Fields studies. However, no studies have, so far, derived basic physical quantities of structure formation or made comparisons with theoretical models. We obtain a homogeneous sample of dropout galaxies at $z\sim8$ from eight field data of Hubble legacy images that are as deep as the A2744z8OD data. Using the sample, we find that a galaxy surface overdensity value of A2744z8OD is very high $δ\simeq130$, where $δ$ is defined by an overdensity in a small circle of $6"$ ($\simeq30$ physical kpc) radius. Because there is no such a large $δ$ value reported for high-$z$ overdensities to date, A2744z8OD is a system clearly different from those found in previous high-$z$ overdensity studies. In the galaxy+structure formation models of Henriques et al. (2015), there exist a very similar overdensity, Modelz8OD, that is made of eight model dropout galaxies at $z\sim8$ in a $6"$-radius circle. Modelz8OD is a progenitor of a today's $10^{14}M_\odot$ cluster, and more than a half of the seven Modelz8OD galaxies are merged into the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of the cluster. If Modelz8OD is a counterpart of A2744z8OD, the models suggest that A2744z8OD would be a part of a forming cluster core of a today's $10^{14}M_\odot$ cluster that started star formation at $z>12$.
We investigate the prevalence of AGN in the high-redshift protocluster $\rm{Cl}\,0218.3$-$0510$ at $z=1.62$. Using imaging from the Chandra X-ray Telescope, we find a large overdensity of AGN in the protocluster; a factor of $23\pm9$ times the field density of AGN. Only half of this AGN overdensity is due to the overdensity of massive galaxies in the protocluster (a factor of $11\pm2$), as we find that $17^{+6}_{-5}\%$ of massive galaxies ($M_* > 10^{10}\,\rm{M}_{\odot}$) in the protocluster host an X-ray luminous AGN, compared to $8\pm1\%$ in the field. This corresponds to an enhancement of A…
We present a Herschel/SPIRE survey of three protoclusters at z=2-3 (2QZCluster, HS1700, SSA22). Based on the SPIRE colours (S350/S250 and S500/S350) of 250 $μ$m sources, we selected high redshift dusty star-forming galaxies potentially associated with the protoclusters. In the 2QZCluster field, we found a 4-sigma overdensity of six SPIRE sources around 4.5' (~2.2 Mpc) from a density peak of H$α$ emitters at z=2.2. In the HS1700 field, we found a 5-sigma overdensity of eight SPIRE sources around 2.1' (~1.0 Mpc) from a density peak of LBGs at z=2.3. We did not find any significant overdensities …
We study the characteristics of galaxy protoclusters using the latest L-galaxies semi-analytic model. Searching for protoclusters on a scale of $\sim 10 \, \mathrm{cMpc}$ gives an excellent compromise between the completeness and purity of their galaxy populations, leads to high distinction from the field in overdensity space, and allows accurate determination of the descendant cluster mass. This scale is valid over a range of redshifts and selection criteria. We present a procedure for estimating, given a measured galaxy overdensity, the protocluster probability and its descendant cluster mas…
Simulations predict that gas in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is distributed in filamentary structures that connect dense galaxy clusters and form the cosmic web. These structures of predominantly ionized hydrogen are difficult to observe directly due to their lack of emitting regions. We serendipitously detected an overdensity of log N(HI) > 18.0 absorbers at z = 2.69 along the lines of sight toward a pair of background quasars. Three main absorption regions spanning ~2000 km/s (corresponding to 6.4 (h_70)^(-1) Mpc proper) are coincident in the two lines of sight, which are separated by ~90 …
In the hierarchical theory of galaxy formation, a galaxy overdensity is a hallmark of a massive cosmic structure. However, it is less well understood how different types of galaxies trace the underlying large-scale structure. Motivated by the discovery of a z=3.13 protocluster, we examine how the same structure is populated by Ly$α$-emitting galaxies (LAEs). To this end, we have undertaken a deep narrow-band imaging survey sampling Ly$α$ emission at this redshift. Of the 93 LAE candidates within a 36'x36'~(70x70~Mpc^2) field, 21 galaxies form a significant surface overdensity (delta_g=3.3+/-0.…
We conduct a systematic search for galaxy protoclusters at $z\sim3.8$ based on the latest internal data release (S16A) of the Hyper SuprimeCam Subaru strategic program (HSC-SSP). In the Wide layer of the HSC-SSP, we investigate the large-scale projected sky distribution of $g$-dropout galaxies over an area of $121\,\mathrm{deg^2}$, and identify 216 large-scale overdense regions ($>4σ$ overdensity significance) that are good protocluster candidates. Of these, 37 are located within $8\,\mathrm{arcmin}$ ($3.4\,\mathrm{physicalMpc}$) from other protocluster candidates of higher overdensity, and ar…
The Planck satellite has identified more than 2000 protocluster candidates with extreme star formation rates (SFRs). Here, we present the spectroscopic identification of a Planck-selected protocluster located in the Cosmos field, PHz G237.01+42.50 (G237). G237 contains a galaxy overdensity of 31 spectroscopically identified galaxies at z~2.16 (significant at 5.4 sigma) in a 10'x11' region. The overdensity contains two substructures or protoclusters at <z>~2.16 and 2.195 with estimated halo masses at z=0 of ~(5-6)x10^14 Msun. The overdensity total SFR, ~4000 Msun/yr, is higher than predicted by…

We present results from a narrow-band survey of the field around the high redshift radio galaxy MRC 2104-242. We have selected Halpha emitters in a 7sq.arcmin field and compared the measured number density with that of a field sample at similar redshift. We find that MRC 2104-242 lies in an overdensity of galaxies that is 8.0 +/- 0.8 times the average density of a blank field, suggesting it resides in a large-scale structure that may eventually collapse to form a massive cluster. We find that there is more dust obscured star formation in the protocluster galaxies than in similarly selected con…
Radio Active Galactic Nuclei (RAGNs) are mainly found in dense structures (i.e., clusters/groups) at redshifts of z$<$2 and are commonly used to detect protoclusters at higher redshift. Here, we attempt to study the host and environmental properties of two relatively faint ($\mathrm L_\mathrm{1.4GHz} \sim10^{25}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) RAGNs in a known protocluster at z=3.3 in the PCl J0227-0421 field, detected using the latest radio observation obtained as part of the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large-Scale Environments (ORELSE) Survey. Using new spectroscopic observations obtained from Keck/…
Protoclusters of galaxies have been found in the last quarter century. However, most of them have been found through the overdensity of star-forming galaxies, and there had been no known structures identified by multiple spectroscopically confirmed quiescent galaxies at $z>2.5$. In this letter, we report the discovery of an overdense structure of massive quiescent galaxies with the spectroscopic redshift $z=2.77$ in the COSMOS field, QO-1000. We first photometrically identify this structure as a $4.2σ$ overdensity with 14 quiescent galaxies in $7\times4\ {\rm pMpc^2}$ from the COSMOS2020 catal…
We present the results of a densely sampled spectroscopic survey of the SSA22 protocluster at $z\approx 3.09$. Our sample with Keck/LRIS spectroscopy includes 106 Ly$α$ Emitters (LAEs) and 40 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at $z=3.05-3.12$. These galaxies are contained within the $9'\times9'$ region in which the protocluster was discovered, which also hosts the maximum galaxy overdensity in the SSA22 region. The redshift histogram of our spectroscopic sample reveals two distinct peaks, at $z=3.069$ (blue, 43 galaxies) and $z=3.095$ (red, 103 galaxies). Furthermore, objects in the blue and red pea…
In the hierarchical model of structure formation, giant elliptical galaxies form through merging processes within the highest density peaks known as protoclusters. While high-redshift radio galaxies usually pinpoint the location of these environments, we have recently discovered at z~2-3 three Enormous (>200 kpc) Lyman-Alpha Nebulae (ELANe) that host multiple AGN and that are surrounded by overdensities of Lyman-alpha Emitters (LAE). These regions are prime candidates of massive protoclusters in the early stages of assembly. To characterize the star-forming activity within these rare structure…
We have developed a search methodology to identify galaxy protoclusters at $z>2.74$, and implemented it on a sample of $\sim$14,000 galaxies with previously measured redshifts. The results of this search are recorded in the Candidate Cluster and Protocluster Catalog (CCPC). The catalog contains 12 clusters that are highly significant overdensities ($δ_{gal}>7$), 6 of which are previously known. We also identify another 31 candidate protoclusters (including 4 previously identified structures) of lower overdensity. CCPC systems vary over a wide range of physical sizes and shapes, from small, com…

Using moderate-resolution optical spectra from 58 background Lyman-break galaxies and quasars at $z\sim 2.3-3$ within a $11.5'\times13.5'$ area of the COSMOS field ($\sim 1200\,\mathrm{deg}^2$ projected area density or $\sim 2.4\,h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ mean transverse separation), we reconstruct a 3D tomographic map of the foreground Ly$α$ forest absorption at $2.2<z<2.5$ with an effective smoothing scale of $σ_{3d}\approx3.5\,h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ comoving. Comparing with 61 coeval galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the same volume, we find that the galaxy positions are clearly biased to…
We performed a systematic spectroscopic observation of a protocluster at $z=6.01$ in the Subaru Deep Field. We took spectroscopy for all 53 $i'$-dropout galaxies down to $z'=27.09\,\mathrm{mag}$ in/around the protocluster region. From these observations, we confirmed that 28 galaxies are at $z\sim6$, of which ten are clustered in a narrow redshift range of $Δz<0.06$. To trace the evolution of this primordial structure, we applied the same $i'$-dropout selection and the same overdensity measurements used in the observations to a semi-analytic model built upon the Millennium Simulation. We obtai…

We report the results of a pilot spectroscopic program of a region at z=5.2 in the GOODS-N field containing an overdensity of galaxies around the well-known submillimeter galaxy HDF850.1. We have selected candidate cluster members from the optical 25 medium-band photometric catalog of the project SHARDS (Survey for High-z Absorption Red and Dead Sources). 17 rest-frame UV selected galaxies (LAEs and LBGs) with 5.15<z_phot<5.27, candidates to be physically associated with the overdensity, have been observed with the instrument OSIRIS at the GranTeCan telescope. 13 out of these 17 (76 per cent) …
Characterizing high-z quasar environments is key to understanding the co-evolution of quasars and the surrounding galaxies. To restrict their global picture, we statistically examine the g-dropout galaxy overdensity distribution around 570 faint quasar candidates at z ~ 4, based on the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program survey. We compare the overdensity significances of g-dropout galaxies around the quasars with those around g-dropout galaxies, and find no significant difference between their distributions. A total of 4 (22) out of the 570 faint quasars, 0.7_{-0.4}^{+0.4} (3.9_{-0.8}^…
Identifying a protocluster formation at z $\sim$ 4.5 in the COSMOS field: an extension of Taralay protocluster, traced by Ly-alpha emitters surrounding a submm galaxy
We carried out deep H$α$ narrowband imaging with 10 hours net integrations towards the young protocluster, USS1558$-$003 at $z=2.53$ with the Subaru Telescope. This system is composed of four dense groups with massive local overdensities, traced by 107 H$α$ emitters (HAEs) with stellar masses and dust-corrected star formation rates down to $1\times10^8$ M$_\odot$ and 3 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$, respectively. We have investigated the environmental dependence of various physical properties within the protocluster by comparing distributions of HAEs in higher and lower densities with a standard Kolmogor…
We present the results from ALMA CO(3-2) observations of 66 Halpha-selected galaxies in three protoclusters around radio galaxies, PKS1138-262 (z=2.16) and USS1558-003 (z=2.53), and 4C23.56 (z=2.49). The pointing areas have an overdensity of ~100 compared to a mean surface number density of galaxies in field environments. We detect CO emission line in 16 star-forming galaxies, including previously published six galaxies, to measure the molecular gas mass. In the stellar mass range of 10.5<log(Mstar/Msolar)<11.0, the protocluster galaxies have larger gas mass fractions and longer gas depletion …
We have carried out a panoramic Ly$α$ narrowband imaging with Suprime-Cam on Subaru towards the known protocluster USS1558--003 at $z=2.53$. Our previous narrowband imaging at near-infrared has identified multiple dense groups of H$α$ emitters (HAEs) within the protocluster. We have now identified the large-scale structures across a $\sim$50 comoving Mpc scale traced by Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) in which the protocluster traced by the HAEs is embedded. On a smaller scale, however, there are remarkably few LAEs in the regions of HAE overdensities. Moreover, the stacking analyses of the images show …
We present a multiwavelength study of galaxies around D4UD01, a spectroscopically confirmed protocluster at z = 3.24 to investigate environmental trends. 450 galaxies are selected based on Ks band detection with photometric redshifts (photo-z) at 3.0 < z < 3.4, among which ~ 12% are classified as quiescent galaxies. The quiescent galaxies are among the most massive and reddest ones in the entire sample. We identify a large photo-z galaxy overdensity in the field, which lies close to the previously spectroscopically confirmed sources of the protocluster. We find that the quiescent galaxies are …
We report the serendipitous discovery of a dusty, starbursting galaxy at $z=5.667$ (hereafter called CRLE) in close physical association with the "normal" main-sequence galaxy HZ10 at $z=5.654$. CRLE was identified by detection of [CII], [NII] and CO(2-1) line emission, making it the highest redshift, most luminous starburst in the COSMOS field. This massive, dusty galaxy appears to be forming stars at a rate of at least 1500$\,M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ in a compact region only $\sim3$ kpc in diameter. The dynamical and dust emission properties of CRLE suggest an ongoing merger driving the starburst,…

We explore the structures of protoclusters and their relationship with high redshift clusters using the Millennium Simulation combined with a semi-analytic model. We find that protoclusters are very extended, with 90 per cent of their mass spread across $\sim35\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ comoving at $z=2$ ($\sim30\, \rm{arcmin}$). The `main halo', which can manifest as a high redshift cluster or group, is only a minor feature of the protocluster, containing less than 20 per cent of all protocluster galaxies at $z=2$. Furthermore, many protoclusters do not contain a main halo that is massive enough to b…
The RAdio Galaxy Environment Reference Survey (RAGERS): Evidence of an anisotropic distribution of submillimeter galaxies in the 4C 23.56 protocluster at z=2.48
In a protocluster USS1558-003 at z=2.53, galaxies in the dense cores show systematically elevated star-forming activities than those in less dense regions. To understand its origin, we look into the gas properties of the galaxies in the dense cores by conducting deep 1.1mm observations with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We detect interstellar dust continuum emissions from 12 member galaxies and estimate their molecular gas masses. Comparing these gas masses with our previous measurements from CO(3-2) line, we infer that the latter might be overestimated. We find that the…

We report the discovery of an extremely dense group of massive galaxies at the centre of the protocluster at $z=3.09$ in the SSA22 field from near-infrared spectroscopy conducted with the Multi-Object InfraRed Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) equipped on the Subaru Telecope. The newly discovered group comprises seven galaxies confirmed at $z_{\rm spec}\approx3.09$ within 180 kpc including five massive objects with the stellar masses larger than $10^{10.5}~M_{\odot}$ and is associated with a bright sub-mm source SSA22-AzTEC14. The dynamical mass of the group estimated from the line-of-sight vel…
We present new observations of the field containing the z=3.786 protocluster, PC217.96+32.3. We confirm that it is one of the largest and most overdense high-redshift structures known. Such structures are rare even in the largest cosmological simulations. We used the Mayall/MOSAIC1.1 imaging camera to image a 1.2x0.6 deg area (~150x75 comoving Mpc) surrounding the protocluster's core and discovered 165 candidate Lyman Alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) and 788 candidate Lyman Break galaxies (LBGs). There are at least 2 overdense regions traced by the LAEs, the largest of which shows an areal overd…
We report a $z=2.30$ galaxy protocluster (COSTCO-I) in the COSMOS field, where the Lyman-$α$ forest as seen in the CLAMATO IGM tomography survey does not show significant absorption. This departs from the transmission-density relationship (often dubbed the fluctuating Gunn-Peterson approximation; FGPA) usually expected to hold at this epoch, which would lead one to predict strong Ly$α$ absorption at the overdensity. For comparison, we generate mock Lyman-$α$ forest maps by applying FGPA to constrained simulations of the COSMOS density field, and create mocks that incorporate the effects of fin…

We report fourteen and twenty-eight protocluster candidates at z=5.7 and 6.6 over 14 and 19 deg^2 areas, respectively, selected from 2,230 (259) Lya emitters (LAEs) photometrically (spectroscopically) identified with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) deep images (Keck, Subaru, and Magellan spectra and the literature data). Six out of the 42 protocluster candidates include 1-12 spectroscopically confirmed LAEs at redshifts up to z=6.574. By the comparisons with the cosmological Lya radiative transfer (RT) model reproducing LAEs with the reionization effects, we find that more than a half of these …
Submillimetre galaxies represent a rapid growth phase of both star formation and massive galaxies. Mapping SMGs in galaxy protoclusters provides key insights into where and how these extreme starbursts take place in connections with the assembly of the large-scale structure in the early Universe. We search for SMGs at 850$\,μm$ using JCMT/SCUBA-2 in two massive protoclusters at $z=2.24$, BOSS1244 and BOSS1542, and detect 43 and 54 sources with $S_{850}>4\,$mJy at the $4σ$ level within an effective area of 264$\,$arcmin$^2$, respectively. We construct the intrinsic number counts and find that t…
We present a detailed study of Near-IR selected galaxies in a protocluster field at z = 3.13. Protocluster galaxies are selected using the available mutliwavelength data with the photometric redshift (photo-z) at 2.9 < z < 3.3, reaching a mass completeness of ~10^10 M_sun. Diverse types of galaxies have been found in the field including normal star-forming galaxies, quiescent galaxies and dusty star-forming galaxies. The photo-z galaxies form two large overdense structures in the field, largely overlapping with the previously identified galaxy overdensities traced by Lyα emitters (LAEs) and Ly…
We study the mass-metallicity relation for 19 members of a spectroscopically-confirmed protocluster in the COSMOS field at $z=2.2$ (CC2.2), and compare it with that of 24 similarly selected field galaxies at the same redshift. Both samples are $\rm Hα$ emitting sources, chosen from the HiZELS narrow-band survey, with metallicities derived from $\rm N2\ (\frac{\rm [NII] λ6584}{\rm H α})$ line ratio. For the mass-matched samples of protocluster and field galaxies, we find that protocluster galaxies with $10^{9.9} \rm M_\odot \leq M_* \leq 10^{10.9} \rm M_\odot$ are metal deficient by $0.10 \pm 0…
We have mapped at small spatial scales the temperature and the velocity field in the protocluster associated with IRAS 05345+3157, which contains both intermediate-/high-mass protostellar candidates and starless condensations, and is thus an excellent location to investigate the role of massive protostars on protocluster evolution. We observed the ammonia (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions with the VLA. Ammonia is the best thermometer for dense and cold gas, and the observed transitions have critical densities able to trace the kinematics of the intracluster gaseous medium. The ammonia emis…
We present the Obelisk project, a cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulation following the assembly and reionization of a protocluster progenitor during the first two billions of years from the big bang, down to $z = 3.5$. The simulation resolves haloes down to the atomic cooling limit, and tracks the contribution of different sources of ionization: stars, active galactic nuclei, and collisions. The Obelisk project is designed specifically to study the coevolution of high redshift galaxies and quasars in an environment favouring black hole growth. In this paper, we establish the relative …
