We analyze the stellar growth of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) produced by cosmological zoom-in hydrodynamical simulations of the formation of massive galaxy clusters. The evolution of the stellar mass content is studied considering different apertures, and tracking backwards either the main progenitor of the $z=0$ BCG or that of the cluster hosting the BCG at $z=0$. Both methods lead to similar results up to $z \simeq 1.5$. The simulated BCGs masses at $z=0$ are in agreement with recent observations. In the redshift interval from $z=1$ to $z=0$ we find growth factors 1.3, 1.6 and 3.6 for stellar masses within 30kpc, 50kpc and 10% of $R_{500}$ respectively. The first two factors, and in general the mass evolution in this redshift range, are in agreement with most recent observations. The last larger factor is similar to the growth factor obtained by a semi-analytical model (SAM). Half of the star particles that end up in the inner 50 kpc was typically formed by redshift $\sim$ 3.7, while the assembly of half of the BCGs stellar mass occurs on average at lower redshifts $\sim 1.5$. This assembly redshift correlates with the mass attained by the cluster at high $z \gtrsim 1.3$, due to the broader range of the progenitor clusters at high-$z$. The assembly redshift of BCGs decreases with increasing apertures. Our results are compatible with the {\it inside-out} scenario. Simulated BCGs could lack intense enough star formation (SF) at high redshift, while possibly exhibit an excess of residual SF at low redshift.
A large sample of cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) is analysed to study the properties of simulated Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs). Following the formation and evolution of BCGs requires modeling an entire galaxy cluster, because the BCG properties are largely influenced by the state of the gas in the cluster and by interactions and mergers with satellites. BCG evolution is also deeply influenced by the presence of gas heating sources such as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) that prevent catastrophic cooling of large amounts of gas. We show th…
Contradictory results have been reported on the time evolution of the alignment between clusters and their Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG). We study this topic by analyzing cosmological hydro-simulations of 24 massive clusters with $M_{200}|_{z=0} \gtrsim 10^{15}\, M_\odot$, plus 5 less massive with $1 \times 10^{14} \lesssim M_{200}|_{z=0} \lesssim 7 \times 10^{14}\, M_\odot$, which have already proven to produce realistic BCG masses. We compute the BCG alignment with both the distribution of cluster galaxies and the dark matter (DM) halo. At redshift $z=0$, the major axes of the simulated BCG…
We investigate the formation channels of the intracluster light (ICL) and the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in clusters at $z=0$. For this, we perform multi-resolution cosmological N-body simulations using the "Galaxy Replacement Technique" (GRT). We study the formation channels of the ICL and BCG as a function of distance from the cluster center and the dynamical state of the clusters at $z=0$. To do this, we trace back the stars of the ICL and BCG, and identify the stellar components in which they existed when they first fell into the clusters. We find that the progenitors of the ICL and BC…
Using the DIANOGA hydrodynamical zoom-in simulation set of galaxy clusters, we analyze the dynamics traced by stars belonging to the Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and their surrounding diffuse component, forming the intracluster light (ICL), and compare it to the dynamics traced by dark matter and galaxies identified in the simulations. We compute scaling relations between the BCG and cluster velocity dispersions and their corresponding masses (i.e. $M_\mathrm{BCG}^{\star}$- $σ_\mathrm{BCG}^{\star}$, $M_{200}$- $σ_{200}$, $M_\mathrm{BCG}^{\star}$- $M_{200}$, $σ_\mathrm{BCG}^{\star}$- $σ_{2…
Recently, relations connecting the SMBH mass of central galaxies and global properties of the hosting cluster, such as temperature and mass, were observed. We investigate the correlation between SMBH mass and cluster mass and temperature, their establishment and evolution. We compare their scatter to that of the classical $M_{\rm BH}-M_{\rm BCG}$ relation. We study how gas accretion and BH-BH mergers contribute to SMBH growth across cosmic time. We employed 135 groups and clusters with a mass range $1.4\times 10^{13}M_{\odot}-2.5\times 10^{15} M_{\odot}$ extracted from a set of 29 zoom-in cosm…
ESO 137-G006 is the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of the cool-core and dynamically young Norma cluster. We discover an atomic hydrogen (HI) absorption line associated with this BCG using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We estimate a gas column density of $ \approx (1.3 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{20}\,T_{\rm{spin}}$ atoms cm$^{-2}$ with spin temperature, $T_{\rm{spin}} \leq 194$ K, consistent with the HI properties of other early-type galaxies and cool-core cluster BCGs. The relationship between the presence of cold gas and a cluster cooling flow is unclear. Our results support the scenario th…
We present the first results from RomulusC, the highest resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulation of a galaxy cluster run to date. RomulusC, a zoom-in simulation of a halo with $z=0$ mass $10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, is run with the same sub-grid physics and resolution as Romulus25 (Tremmel et al. 2017). With unprecedented mass and spatial resolution, RomulusC represents a unique opportunity to study the evolution of galaxies in dense environments down to dwarf masses. We demonstrate that RomulusC results in an intracluster medium (ICM) consistent with observations. The star formation history …
Galaxy clusters are an established and powerful test-bed for theories of both galaxy evolution and cosmology. Accurate interpretation of cluster observations often requires robust identification of the location of the centre. Using a statistical sample of clusters drawn from a suite of cosmological simulations in which we have explored a range of galaxy formation models, we investigate how the location of this centre is affected by the choice of observable - stars, hot gas, or the full mass distribution as can be probed by the gravitational potential. We explore several measures of cluster cen…
We use 500 pc resolution cosmological simulations of a Virgo-like galaxy cluster to study the properties of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) that forms at the center of the halo. We compared two simulations; one incorporating only supernovae feedback and a second that also includes prescriptions for black hole growth and the resulting AGN feedback from gas accretion. As previous work has shown, with supernovae feedback alone we are unable to reproduce any of the observed properties of massive cluster ellipticals. The resulting BCG is rotating quickly, has a high Sersic index, a strong mass e…
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) might have been assembled relatively late (z<1) via mergers. By exploiting the high-resolution HST/ACS imaging, we find four BCGs (COSMOS-P 125516, 102810, 036694 and 089357) in major dry merging in 29 X-ray clusters at $0.3 \le z \le 0.6$ in the Cosmological Evolutionary Survey (COSMOS). These BCGs show prominent but quiescent double nuclei with a magnitude difference of $δm<1.5$ and a projected separation of $r_p<$ 10 kpc. Clear signatures of interaction such as extended plumes and/or significant asymmetries are also observed in their residual images. We inf…
We present cosmological N-body resimulations of the assembly of the Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) in rich clusters. At $z=2$ we populate dark matter subhalos with self-gravitating stellar systems whose abundance and structure match observed high-redshift galaxies. By $z=0$, mergers have built much larger galaxies at cluster centre. Their dark matter density profiles are shallower than in corresponding dark-matter-only simulations, but their total mass density profiles (stars + dark matter) are quite similar. Differences are found only at radii where the effects of central black holes may b…
Although it is generally accepted that massive galaxies form in a two-phased fashion, beginning with a rapid mass buildup through intense starburst activities, followed by primarily dry mergers that mainly deposit stellar mass at outskirts, the late time stellar mass growth of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), the most massive galaxies in the universe, is still not well understood. Several independent measurements have indicated a slower mass growth rate than predictions from theoretical models. We attempt to resolve the discrepancy by measuring the frequency of BCGs with multiple-cores, whic…
Recent hydrodynamic cosmological simulations cover volumes up to Gpc^3 and resolve halos across a wide range of masses and environments, from massive galaxy clusters down to normal galaxies, while following a large variety of physical processes (star formation, chemical enrichment, AGN feedback) to allow a self-consistent comparison to observations at multiple wavelengths. Using the Magneticum simulations, we investigate the buildup of the diffuse stellar component (DSC) around massive galaxies within group and cluster environments. The DSC in our simulations reproduces the spatial distributio…
Galaxy clusters have a triaxial matter distribution. The weak-lensing signal, an important part in cosmological studies, measures the projected mass of all matter along the line-of-sight, and therefore changes with the orientation of the cluster. Studies suggest that the shape of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the centre of the cluster traces the underlying halo shape, enabling a method to account for projection effects. We use 324 simulated clusters at four redshifts between 0.1 and 0.6 from `The Three Hundred Project' to quantify correlations between the orientation and shape of the B…
We investigate the formation of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the TNG300 cosmological simulation of the IllustrisTNG project. Our cluster sample consists of 700 haloes with $M_{200} \geq 5 \times 10^{13} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ at $z=0$, along with their progenitors at earlier epochs. This includes 280 systems with $M_{200} \geq 10^{14} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ at $z=0$, as well as three haloes with $M_{200} \geq 10^{15} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. We find that the stellar masses and star formation rates of our simulated BCGs are in good agreement with observations at $z \lesssim 0.4$, and tha…
Under the $Λ$ cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) cosmological models, massive galaxies are expected to be larger in denser environments through frequent hierarchical mergers with other galaxies. Yet, observational studies of low-redshift early-type galaxies have shown no such trend, standing as a puzzle to solve during the past decade. We analyzed 73,116 early-type galaxies at $0.1\leq z < 0.15$, adopting a robust nonparametric size measurement technique and extending the analysis to many massive galaxies. We find for the first time that local early-type galaxies heavier than $10^{11.2}M_{\odot}$ show …
[Abridged] In this paper, we carry out a detailed analysis of the performance of two different methods to identify the diffuse stellar light in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters. One method is based on a dynamical analysis of the stellar component. The second method is closer to techniques commonly employed in observational studies. Both the dynamical method and the method based on the surface brightness limit criterion are applied to the same set of hydrodynamical simulations for a large sample about 80 galaxy clusters. We find significant differences between the ICL …
At cosmological distances, gravitational lensing can provide a direct measurement of supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses irrespective of their luminosities. Here, we directly estimate the mass of a SMBH in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of MACS J1149+2223.5 at $z=0.54$ through one of the multiply-lensed images of a background spiral galaxy at $z=1.49$ projected close to the BCG. In this particular image, an intrinsically compact region in one of the spiral arms is lensed into an arc that curves towards the BCG center. This arc has a radius of curvature of only $\sim$0."6, betraying the p…
We study the gas and stellar mass content of galaxy groups and clusters in the FABLE suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, including the evolution of their central brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), satellite galaxies and intracluster light (ICL). The total gas and stellar mass of FABLE clusters are in very good agreement with observations and show negligible redshift evolution at fixed halo mass for $M_{500} \gtrsim 3 \times 10^{14} M_{\odot}$ at $z \lesssim 1$, in line with recent findings from Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ)-selected cluster samples. Importantly, the simulations predict…
Using the data set of The Three Hundred project, i.e. a suite of 324 hydrodynamical resimulations of cluster-sized haloes, we study galaxy cluster mergers and their effect on colour and luminosity changes of their brightest cluster galaxies (BCG). We track the main progenitor of each halo at z=0 and search for merger situations based on its mass accretion history, defining mergers as very rapid increases in the halo mass. Based upon the evolution of the dynamical state of the cluster we define a pre- and post-merger phase. We create a list of all these events and statistically study their mass…
We use the "Evolution and assembly of galaxies and their environments" (EAGLE) cosmological simulation to investigate the effect of baryons on the density profiles of rich galaxy clusters. We focus on EAGLE clusters with $M_{200}>10^{14}~M_\odot$ of which we have six examples. The central brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the simulation have steep stellar density profiles, $ρ_*(r) \propto r^{-3}$. Stars dominate the mass density for $r<10~\rm{kpc}$, and, as a result, the total mass density profiles are steeper than the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, in remarkable agreement with observat…
We quantify evolution in the cluster scale stellar mass - halo mass (SMHM) relation's parameters using 2323 clusters and brightest central galaxies (BCGs) over the redshift range $0.03 \le z \le 0.60$. The precision on inferred SMHM parameters is improved by including the magnitude gap ($\rm m_{gap}$) between the BCG and fourth brightest cluster member (M14) as a third parameter in the SMHM relation. At fixed halo mass, accounting for $\rm m_{gap}$, through a stretch parameter, reduces the SMHM relation's intrinsic scatter. To explore this redshift range, we use clusters, BCGs, and cluster mem…
The brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the Abell 1664 cluster is unusually blue and is forming stars at a rate of ~ 23 M_{\sun} yr^{-1}. The BCG is located within 5 kpc of the X-ray peak, where the cooling time of 3.5x10^8 yr and entropy of 10.4 keV cm^2 are consistent with other star-forming BCGs in cooling flow clusters. The center of A1664 has an elongated, "bar-like" X-ray structure whose mass is comparable to the mass of molecular hydrogen, ~ 10^{10} M_{\sun} in the BCG. We show that this gas is unlikely to have been stripped from interloping galaxies. The cooling rate in this region is ro…
We study shapes and alignments of 45 dark matter (DM) haloes and their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) using a sample of 39 massive clusters from Hubble Frontier Field (HFF), Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH), and Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). We measure shapes of the DM haloes by strong gravitational lensing, whereas BCG shapes are derived from their light profiles in Hubble Space Telescope images. Our measurements from a large sample of massive clusters presented here provide new constraints on dark matter and cluster astrophysics. We find that DM hal…
We characterise the properties and evolution of Bright Central Galaxies (BCGs) and the surrounding intracluster light (ICL) in galaxy clusters identified in overlapping regions of the Dark Energy Survey and Atacama Cosmology Telescope Survey (DES-ACT), covering the redshift range $0.20<z<0.80$. Using this sample, we measure no change in the ICL's stellar content (between 50-300\,kpc) over this redshift range in clusters with log$_{10}(M_{\rm 200m,SZ}$/M$_{\odot})>$14.4. We also measure the stellar mass - halo mass (SMHM) relation for the BCG+ICL system and find that the slope, $β$, which chara…
We have developed a parallel cosmological hydrodynamic simulation code designed for the study of formation and evolution of cosmological structures. The gravitational force is calculated using the TreePM method and the hydrodynamics is implemented based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics. The initial displacement and velocity of simulation particles are calculated according to second-order linear perturbation theory using the power spectra of dark matter and baryonic matter. The initial background temperature is given by Recfast and the temperature uctuations at the initial particle positi…
We study stellar property statistics, including satellite galaxy occupation, of massive halo populations realized by three cosmological hydrodynamics simulations: BAHAMAS + MACSIS, TNG300 of the IllustrisTNG suite, and Magneticum Pathfinder. The simulations incorporate independent sub-grid methods for astrophysical processes with spatial resolutions ranging from $1.5$ to $6$ kpc, and each generates samples of $1000$ or more halos with $M_{\rm halo}> 10^{13.5} M_{\odot}$ at redshift $z=0$. Applying localized, linear regression (LLR), we extract halo mass-conditioned statistics (normalizations, …
Tracing Dark Matter in the Central Regions of Galaxy Clusters Using Galaxies, Gas, and Intracluster Light in TNG300: Connections to Cluster Dynamical State
We introduce the Galaxy Replacement Technique (GRT) that allows us to model tidal stripping of galaxies with very high-mass (m$_{\rm{star}}=5.4\times10^4$~M$_\odot$/h) and high-spatial resolution (10 pc/h), in a fully cosmological context, using an efficient and fast technique. The technique works by replacing multiple low-resolution DM halos in the base cosmological simulation with high-resolution models, including a DM halo and stellar disk. We apply the method to follow the hierarchical build-up of a cluster since redshift $\sim8$ to now, through the hierarchical accretion of galaxies, indi…
We revisit the massive isolated elliptical galaxy / fossil group NGC 6482 for which previous X-ray studies of a modest Chandra observation obtained a very uncertain, but also possibly very high, halo concentration. We present new measurements of the hot gas surface brightness, temperature, and iron abundance using the modest Chandra observation and a previously unpublished Suzaku observation, the latter of which allows measurements of the gas properties to be extended out to ~r_2500. By constructing hydrostatic equilibrium models of the gas with separate components for the gas, BCG stellar mas…
The traditional view of the morphology-spin connection is being challenged by recent integral-field-unit observations, as the majority of early-type galaxies are found to have a rotational component that is often as large as a dispersion component. Mergers are often suspected to be critical in galaxy spin evolution, yet the details of their roles are still unclear. We present the first results on the spin evolution of galaxies in cluster environments through a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. Galaxies spin down globally with cosmic evolution. Major (mass ratios > 1/4) and minor (1/4 $\geq…
Recent observations of giant ellipticals and brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) provide tentative evidence for a correlation between the luminosity of the H$α$ emitting gas filaments and the strength of feedback associated with the active galactic nucleus (AGN). Motivated by this, we use 3D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations with the code Enzo to examine and quantify the relationship between the observable properties of the H$α$ filaments and the kinetic and radiative feedback from supermassive black holes in BCGs. We find that the spatial extent and total mass of the filaments show positive co…
Recent observations provide evidence that some cool-core clusters (CCCs) host quasars in their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). Motivated by these findings we use 3D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations with the code Enzo to explore the joint role of the kinetic and radiative feedback from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in BCGs. We implement kinetic feedback as sub-relativistic plasma outflows and model radiative feedback using the ray-tracing radiative transfer or thermal energy injection. In our simulations the central SMBH transitions between the radiatively efficient and radiatively inef…
In this second paper on the entire virial region of the relaxed fossil cluster RXJ1159+5531, we present a hydrostatic analysis of the hot intracluster medium (ICM). For a model consisting of ICM, stellar mass from the central galaxy (BCG), and an NFW dark matter (DM) halo, we obtain good descriptions of the projected radial profiles of ICM emissivity and temperature. The BCG stellar mass is clearly detected with M_star/L_K = 0.61 +/- 0.11 solar, consistent with stellar population synthesis models for a Milky-Way IMF. We obtain a halo concentration, c_200 =8.4 +/- 1.0, and virial mass, M_200 = …

We present a weak-lensing and dynamical study of the complex cluster Abell 1758 (A1758, z = 0.278) supported by hydrodynamical simulations. This cluster is composed of two main structures, called A1758N and A1758S. The Northern structure is composed of A1758NW & A1758NE, with lensing determined masses of 7.90_{-1.55}^{+1.89} X 10^{14} M_\odot and 5.49_{-1.33}^{+1.67} X 10^{14} M_\odot, respectively. They show a remarkable feature: while in A1758NW there is a spatial agreement among weak lensing mass distribution, intracluster medium and its brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in A1758NE the X-ray p…
The diffuse medium in and around galaxies can exist in a multi-phase state: small, cold gas clouds contributing significantly to the total mass embedded in pressure equilibrium with a hotter, more diffuse volume-filling component. Modeling this multi-phase state in cosmological simulations poses a significant challenge due to the requirements to spatially resolve the clouds and consequently the interactions between the phases. In this paper, we present a novel method to model this gas state in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We solve the compressible two-fluid hydrodynamic equations u…
Merging galaxy clusters have been touted as one of the best probes for constraining self-interacting dark matter, but few simulations exist to back up this claim. We simulate equal mass mergers of 10$^{15}$ M$_\odot$ halos, like the El Gordo and Sausage clusters, with cosmologically-motivated halo and merger parameters, and with velocity-independent dark-matter self-interactions. Although the standard lore for merging clusters is that self-interactions lead to large separations between the galaxy and dark-matter distributions, we find that maximal galaxy-dark matter offsets of $\lesssim~20$~kp…
We extend a machine learning (ML) framework presented previously to model galaxy formation and evolution in a hierarchical universe using N-body + hydrodynamical simulations. In this work, we show that ML is a promising technique to study galaxy formation in the backdrop of a hydrodynamical simulation. We use the Illustris Simulation to train and test various sophisticated machine learning algorithms. By using only essential dark matter halo physical properties and no merger history, our model predicts the gas mass, stellar mass, black hole mass, star formation rate, $g-r$ color, and stellar m…
We introduce project NIHAO (Numerical Investigation of a Hundred Astrophysical Objects), a set of 100 cosmological zoom-in hydrodynamical simulations performed using the gasoline code, with an improved implementation of the SPH algorithm. The haloes in our study range from dwarf to Milky Way masses, and represent an unbiased sampling of merger histories, concentrations and spin parameters. The particle masses and force softenings are chosen to resolve the mass profile to below 1% of the virial radius at all masses, ensuring that galaxy half-light radii are well resolved. Using the same treatme…
Context: The shape of the mass density profiles of cosmological halos informs us of the nature of DM and DM-baryons interactions. Previous estimates of the inner slope of the mass density profiles of clusters of galaxies are in opposition to predictions derived from numerical simulations of CDM. Aims: We determine the inner slope of the DM density profile of a massive cluster of galaxies, Abell S1063 (RXC J2248.7$-$4431) at $z=0.35$, with a dynamical analysis based on an extensive spectroscopic campaign carried out with the VIMOS and MUSE spectrographs at the ESO VLT. This new data set provide…
Cosmological N-body simulations represent an excellent tool to study the formation and evolution of dark matter (DM) halos and the mechanisms that have originated the universal profile at the largest mass scales in the Universe. In particular, the combination of the velocity dispersion $σ_\mathrm{v}$ with the density $ρ$ can be used to define the pseudo-entropy $S(r)=σ_\mathrm{v}^2/ρ^{\,2/3}$, whose profile is well-described by a simple power-law $S\propto\,r^{\,α}$. We analyze a set of cosmological hydrodynamical re-simulations of massive galaxy clusters and study the pseudo-entropy profiles …
