Spectral methods are now common in the solution of ordinary differential eigenvalue problems in a wide variety of fields, such as in the computation of black hole quasinormal modes. Most of these spectral codes are based on standard Chebyshev, Fourier, or some other orthogonal basis functions. In this work we highlight the usefulness of a relatively unknown set of non-orthogonal basis functions, known as Bernstein polynomials, and their advantages for handling boundary conditions in ordinary differential eigenvalue problems. We also report on a new user-friendly package, called \texttt{SpectralBP}, that implements Berstein-polynomial-based pseudospectral routines for eigenvalue problems. We demonstrate the functionalities of the package by applying it to a number of model problems in quantum mechanics and to the problem of computing scalar and gravitational quasinormal modes in a Schwarzschild background. We validate our code against some known results and achieve excellent agreement. Compared to continued-fraction or series methods, global approximation methods are particularly well-suited for computing purely imaginary modes such as the algebraically special modes for Schwarzschild gravitational perturbations.
We present the improved Mathematica code which computes quasinormal frequencies with the help of the Bernstein spectral method for a general class of black holes, allowing for asymptotically flat, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter asymptotic. The method is especially efficient when searching for purely imaginary and unstable modes and here it is used for detecting the instability region of a charged scalar field in the background of the charged asymptotically de Sitter dilatonic black hole. We show that the instability has superradiant nature and the dilaton field essentially influences the region o…
In this letter, a matrix method is employed to study the scalar quasinormal modes of Kerr as well as Kerr-Sen black holes. Discretization is applied to transfer the scalar perturbation equation into a matrix form eigenvalue problem, where the resulting radial and angular equations are derived by the method of separation of variables. The eigenvalues, quasinormal frequencies $ω$ and angular quantum numbers $λ$, are then obtained by numerically solving the resultant homogeneous matrix equation. This work shows that the present approach is an accurate as well as efficient method for investigating…
We study the quasinormal mode eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the Teukolsky equation in a horizon penetrating, hyperboloidally compactified (HPHC) coordinate system. Following earlier work by Zenginoğlu (arXiv:1102.2451), we show that the quasinormal eigenfunctions for the Teukolsky equation are regular from the black hole horizon to future null infinity in these coordinates. We then present several example quasinormal eigenfunction solutions, and study some of their properties in the near-extremal Kerr limit.
We study the gravito-electromagnetic perturbations of the Kerr-Newman (KN) black hole metric and identify the two $-$ photon sphere and near-horizon $-$ families of quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the KN black hole, computing the frequency spectra (for all the KN parameter space) of the modes with the slowest decay rate. We uncover a novel phenomenon for QNMs that is unique to the KN system, namely eigenvalue repulsion between QNM families. Such a feature is common in solid state physics where \eg it is responsible for energy bands/gaps in the spectra of electrons moving in certain Schrödinger pot…
In recent years there has been an increased interest in neural networks, particularly with regard to their ability to approximate partial differential equations. In this regard, research has begun on so-called physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) which incorporate into their loss function the boundary conditions of the functions they are attempting to approximate. In this paper, we investigate the viability of obtaining the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of non-rotating black holes in 4-dimensional space-time using PINNs, and we find that it is achievable using a standard approach that is capab…
The frequency spectra of the gravito-electromagnetic perturbations of the Kerr-Newman (KN) black hole with the slowest decay rate have been computed recently. It has been found that KN has two families $-$ the photon sphere and the near-horizon families $-$ of quasinormal modes (QNMs), which display the interesting phenomenon of eigenvalue repulsion. The perturbation equations, in spite of being a coupled system of two PDEs, are amenable to an analytic solution using the method of separation of variables in a near-horizon expansion around the extremal KN black hole. This leads to an analytical…

We investigate the numerical stability of accelerated AdS black holes against linear scalar perturbations. In particular, we study the evolution of a probe non-minimally coupled scalar field on Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström AdS black holes with small accelerations by computing the quasinormal modes of the perturbation spectrum. We decompose the scalar field Klein-Gordon equation and study the eigenvalue problem for its angular and radial-temporal parts using different numerical methods. The angular part is written in terms of the Heun solution and expanded through the Frobenius method w…
Quasinormal modes are characteristic oscillatory modes that control the relaxation of a perturbed physical system back to its equilibrium state. In this work, we calculate QNM frequencies and angular eigenvalues of Kerr--de Sitter black holes using a novel method based on conformal field theory. The spin-field perturbation equations of this background spacetime essentially reduce to two Heun's equations, one for the radial part and one for the angular part. We use the accessory parameter expansion of Heun's equation, obtained via the isomonodromic $τ$-function, in order to find analytic expans…
Quasinormal modes of scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational fields in the extreme Schwarzschild-de Sitter background are known to be expressed in analytic form as eigenvalues of the Pöschl-Teller wavelike equation. We show that perturbations of fermionic fields (given by Dirac and Rarita-Schwinger equations) do not lead to the Pöschl-Teller effective potential. Nevertheless, using the Frobenius method we find quasinormal modes analytically in this case as well. We write down the analytical formula for quasinormal frequencies of the near-extreme Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes, which is…

We present new analytic results on black hole perturbation theory. Our results are based on a novel relation to four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories. We propose an exact version of Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization conditions on quasinormal mode frequencies in terms of the Nekrasov partition function in a particular phase of the $Ω$-background. Our quantization conditions also enable us to find exact expressions of eigenvalues of spin-weighted spheroidal harmonics. We test the validity of our conjecture by comparing against known numerical results for Kerr black holes as w…
We consider the problem of quasinormal modes (QNM) for strongly hyperbolic systems on stationary, asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes, with very general boundary conditions at infinity. We argue that for a time slicing regular at the horizon the QNM should be identified with certain H^k eigenvalues of the infinitesimal generator of the solution semigroup. Using this definition we are able to prove directly that the quasinormal frequencies form a discrete, countable subset of the complex plane, which in the globally stationary case accumulates only at infinity. We avoid any need for merom…
An analytic expression for the scalar quasinormal modes of the generic, spinning Kerr-$\mathrm{AdS_5}$ black holes was previously proposed by the authors in ref. 1, in terms of transcendental equations involving the Painlevé VI (PVI) $τ$ function. In this work, we carry out a numerical investigation of the modes for generic rotation parameters, comparing implementations of expansions for the PVI $τ$ function both in terms of conformal blocks (Nekrasov functions) and Fredholm determinants. We compare the results with standard numerical methods for the subcase of Schwarzschild black holes. We th…
In this work, we study the quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild (Anti-) de Sitter black holes by a matrix method. The proposed method involves discretizing the master field equation and expressing it in form of a homogeneous system of linear algebraic equations. The resulting homogeneous matrix equation furnishes a non-standard eigenvalue problem, which can then be solved numerically to obtain the quasinormal frequencies. A key feature of the present approach is that the discretization of the wave function and its derivatives are made to be independent of any specific metric th…
Quasinormal modes are eigenmodes of dissipative systems. Perturbations of classical gravitational backgrounds involving black holes or branes naturally lead to quasinormal modes. The analysis and classification of the quasinormal spectra requires solving non-Hermitian eigenvalue problems for the associated linear differential equations. Within the recently developed gauge-gravity duality, these modes serve as an important tool for determining the near-equilibrium properties of strongly coupled quantum field theories, in particular their transport coefficients, such as viscosity, conductivity a…

We revisit here the analytical continuation approach usually employed to compute quasinormal modes (QNM) and frequencies of a given potential barrier $V$ starting from the bounded states and respective eigenvalues of the Schroedinger operator associated with the potential well corresponding to the inverted potential $-V$. We consider an exactly soluble problem corresponding to a potential barrier of the Poschl-Teller type with a well defined and behaved QNM spectrum, but for which the associated Schroedinger operator $\cal H$ obtained by analytical continuation fails to be self-adjoint. Althou…
We consider a wave equation with a potential on the half-line as a model problem for wave propagation close to an extremal horizon, or the asymptotically flat end of a black hole spacetime. We propose a definition of quasinormal frequencies (QNFs) as eigenvalues of the generator of time translations for a null foliation, acting on an appropriate (Gevrey based) Hilbert space. We show that this QNF spectrum is discrete in a subset of $\mathbb{C}$ which includes the region $\{$Re$(s) >-b$, $|$Im $(s)|> K\}$ for any $b>0$ and some $K=K(b) \gg 1$. As a corollary we establish the meromorphicity of t…
We revisit the problem of calculating the quasinormal modes of spin $0$, $1/2$, $1$, $3/2$, $2$, and spin $5/2$ fields in the asymptotically flat Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. Our aim is to investigate the problem from the numerical point of view, by comparing some numerical methods available in the literature and still not applied for solving the eigenvalue problems arising from the perturbation equations in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. We focus on the pseudo-spectral and the asymptotic iteration methods. These numerical methods are tested against the available results in the…
We present a package for Mathematica that facilitates the numerical computation of the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of a black hole/black brane. Requiring as input only the QNM equation(s), the application of a single Mathematica function will compute the spectrum efficiently, by discretizing the equation(s) and solving the resulting generalized eigenvalue equation. It is applicable to a large variety of black holes, independent of their asymptotics. The package comes fully documented and with several tutorials. Here we present a self-contained review of the method and consider several appl…
It has recently been found that quasinormal modes of asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in theories with higher curvature corrections may help to describe the regime of intermediate 't Hooft coupling in the dual field theory. Here, we consider quasinormal modes of a scalar field in the background of spherical Gauss--Bonnet--anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes. In general, the eigenvalues of wave equations are found here numerically, but at a fixed Gauss-Bonnet constant $α= R^2/2$ (where $R$ is the AdS radius), an exact solution of the scalar field equation has been obtained. Remarkab…
