We present a package for Mathematica that facilitates the numerical computation of the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of a black hole/black brane. Requiring as input only the QNM equation(s), the application of a single Mathematica function will compute the spectrum efficiently, by discretizing the equation(s) and solving the resulting generalized eigenvalue equation. It is applicable to a large variety of black holes, independent of their asymptotics. The package comes fully documented and with several tutorials. Here we present a self-contained review of the method and consider several applications. We illustrate the method in the simplest case of scalar QNMs of a Schwarzschild black brane in anti-de Sitter. Then we go on to look at the scalar QNMs of the Schwarzschild black hole in de Sitter, in anti-de Sitter and in asymptotically flat spacetimes, finding a novel infinite set of purely imaginary modes in the first case. We also derive the QNM equations for a generic Einstein-Maxwell-scalar background and use these to compute the QNMs of the asymptotically anti-de Sitter Reissner-Nordström black brane, as a further illustration and check of the method.
We study the quasinormal modes of scalar field perturbations in the background of non-Abelian hyperscaling violating Lifshitz black holes. We find that the quasinormal frequencies have no real part so there is no oscillatory behavior in the perturbations, only exponential decay, that is, the system is always overdamped, which guarantees the mode stability of non-Abelian hyperscaling violating Lifshitz black holes. We determine analytically the quasinormal modes for massless scalar fields for a dynamical exponent $z=2$ and hyperscaling violating exponent $\tildeθ>-2$. Also, we obtain numericall…
We study scalar perturbations of four dimensional topological nonlinear charged Lifshitz black holes with spherical and plane transverse sections, and we find numerically the quasinormal modes for scalar fields. Then, we study the stability of these black holes under massive and massless scalar field perturbations. We focus our study on the dependence of the dynamical exponent, the nonlinear exponent, the angular momentum and the mass of the scalar field in the modes. It is found that the modes are overdamped depending strongly on the dynamical exponent and the angular momentum of the scalar f…
We revisit the peculiar electromagnetic quasinormal mode spectrum of an asymptotically anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild black hole. Recent numerical calculations have shown that some quasinormal mode frequencies become purely overdamped at some critical black hole sizes, where the spectrum also bifurcates. In this paper, we shed light on unnoticed and unexplained properties of this spectrum by exploiting some novel analytic results for the large black hole limit. We demonstrate, both numerically and analytically, that the quasinormal mode spectra of large black holes become approximately isospectr…
This note addresses quasinormal mode frequencies of four-dimensional asymptotically de Sitter rotating black holes. The main motivation is that Mathematica 12.1 has implemented a new family of special functions: Heun functions. Using the fact that Teukolsky's equations for Kerr-de Sitter black holes are mapped to Heun's equations, we are able to compute their quasinormal mode frequencies by the Heun function. In this approach, Mathematica normally evaluates these frequencies to arbitrary numerical precision in a few seconds. We further discuss an application to asymptotically flat rotating bla…
We present the improved Mathematica code which computes quasinormal frequencies with the help of the Bernstein spectral method for a general class of black holes, allowing for asymptotically flat, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter asymptotic. The method is especially efficient when searching for purely imaginary and unstable modes and here it is used for detecting the instability region of a charged scalar field in the background of the charged asymptotically de Sitter dilatonic black hole. We show that the instability has superradiant nature and the dilaton field essentially influences the region o…
The WKB approach for finding quasinormal modes of black holes, suggested in [1] by Schutz and Will at the first order and later developed to higher orders [2-4], became popular during the past decades, because, unlike more sophisticated numerical approaches, it is automatic for different effective potentials and mostly provides sufficient accuracy. At the same time, the seeming simplicity of the WKB approach resulted in appearance of a big number of partially misleading papers, where the WKB formula was used beyond its scope of applicability. Here we review various situations in which the WKB …
It is shown here that the extraction of quasinormal modes (QNMs) within the first Born approximation of the scattering amplitude is mathematically not well founded. Indeed, the constraints on the existence of the scattering amplitude integral lead to inequalities for the imaginary parts of the QNM frequencies. For instance, in the Schwarzschild case, $0 \leq ω_I < κ$ (where $κ$ is the surface gravity at the horizon) invalidates the poles deduced from the first Born approximation method, namely, $ω_n = i n κ$.
Quasinormal modes are eigenmodes of dissipative systems. For instance, if a spacetime with an event or cosmological horizon is perturbed from its equilibrium state, quasinormal modes arise as damped oscillations with a spectrum of complex frequencies, called quasinormal frequencies, that depends just on the charges which define the geometry of the spacetime in which the perturbation is propagating, such as the mass, electric charge, and angular momentum. Mathematically, this discrete spectrum of quasinormal modes stems from the fact that certain boundary conditions must be imposed to the physi…
We study the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of charged scalar in the static spherically symmetric black hole background near the event and cosmological horizon. Starting with numerical analysis of the QNMs of black hole in the dRGT massive gravity, the mathematical tool called the Asymptotic Iteration Method~(AIM) is used to calculate the quasinormal frequencies. The parameters such as the mass and charge of the black hole, the cosmological constant, the coefficient of the linear term from massive gravity $γ$, and the mass of the scalar are varied to study the behavior of the QNMs. We found the towe…
In this article we take a close look at three types of transformations usable in the Schwarzschild black hole perturbation theory: a standard (DT), a binary (BDT) and a generalized (GDT) Darboux transformations. In particular, we discuss the absolutely crucial property of {\em isospectrality} of the aforementioned transformations which guarantees that the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectra of potentials, related via the transformation, completely coincide. We demonstrate that, while the first two types of the Darboux transformations (DT and BDT) are indeed isospectral, the situation is wildly diff…
It is known that approximating the Regge-Wheeler Potential with step functions significantly modifies the Schwarzschild black hole quasinormal mode spectrum. Surprisingly, this change in the spectrum has little impact on the ringdown waveform. We examine whether this issue is caused by the jump discontinuities and/or the piecewise constant nature of step functions. We show that replacing the step functions with a continuous piecewise linear function does not qualitatively change the results. However, in contrast to previously published results, we discover that the ringdown waveform can be app…

Computations of the strong field generation of gravitational waves by black hole processes produce waveforms that are dominated by quasinormal (QN) ringing, a damped oscillation characteristic of the black hole. We describe here the mathematical problem of quantifying the QN content of the waveforms generated. This is done in several steps: (i) We develop the mathematics of QN systems that are complete (in a sense to be defined) and show that there is a quantity, the ``excitation coefficient,'' that appears to have the properties needed to quantify QN content. (ii) We show that incomplete syst…
We report development of a code to calculate the scalar self-force on a scalar-charged particle moving on generic bound orbits in the Kerr spacetime. The scalar self-force model allows rapid development of computational techniques relevant to generic gravitational extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs). Our frequency-domain calculations are made with arbitrary numerical precision code written in \textsc{Mathematica}. We extend spectral source integration techniques to the Kerr spacetime, increasing computational efficiency. We model orbits with nearly arbitrary inclinations $0\leqι<π/2$ and ecce…
In this work the evolution of two fields of matter in planar symmetric black holes D-dimensional with symmetry of Lifshitz whose dynamic exponent is $z$ were analyzed. The fields investigated were a scalar field non-minimal coupled to the Einstein tensor and the Ricci scalar and the electromagnetic field. Two black holes were chosen, one with 5-dimensions and z=1 and another with 6-dimensions and $z=0$. The equations of motion for both fields were developed in general and applied to each black hole mentioned. In some cases exact solutions of the equations were obtained in terms of hypergeometr…

An open system is not conservative because energy can escape to the outside. An open system by itself is thus not conservative. As a result, the time-evolution operator is not hermitian in the usual sense and the eigenfunctions (factorized solutions in space and time) are no longer normal modes but quasinormal modes (QNMs) whose frequencies $ω$ are complex. QNM analysis has been a powerful tool for investigating open systems. Previous studies have been mostly system specific, and use a few QNMs to provide approximate descriptions. Here we review recent developments which aim at a unifying trea…
