The effective Lagrangian expansion provides a framework to study effects of new physics at the electroweak scale. To make full use of LHC data in constraining higher-dimensional operators we need to include both the Higgs and the electroweak gauge sector in our study. We first present an analysis of the relevant di-boson production LHC results to update constraints on triple gauge boson couplings. Our bounds are several times stronger than those obtained from LEP data. Next, we show how in combination with Higgs measurements the triple gauge vertices lead to a significant improvement in the en…
We present a global analysis of the Higgs and electroweak sector based on LHC Run II and electroweak precision observables. We show which measurements provide the leading constraints on Higgs-related operators, and how the achieved LHC precision makes it necessary to combine rate measurements with electroweak precision observables. The SFitter framework allows us to include kinematic distributions beyond pre-defined ATLAS and CMS observables, independently study correlations, and avoid Gaussian assumptions for theory uncertainties. These Run II results are a step towards a precision physics pr…
Based on Run I data we present a comprehensive analysis of Higgs couplings. For the first time this SFitter analysis includes independent tests of the Higgs-gluon and top Yukawa couplings, Higgs decays to invisible particles, and off-shell Higgs measurements. The observed Higgs boson is fully consistent with the Standard Model, both in terms of coupling modifications and effective field theory. Based only on Higgs total rates the results using both approaches are essentially equivalent, with the exception of strong correlations in the parameter space induced by effective operators. These corre…
In the recent paper on "The Higgs Legacy of the LHC Run I" we interpreted the LHC Higgs results in terms of an effective Lagrangian using the SFitter framework. For the on-shell Higgs analysis of rates and kinematic distributions we relied on a linear representation based on dimension-6 operators with a simplified fermion sector. In this addendum we describe how the extension of Higgs couplings modifications in a linear dimension-6 Lagrangian can be formally understood in terms of the non-linear effective field theory. It turns out that our previous results can be translated to the non-linear …
We present a comprehensive study of the electroweak interactions using the available Higgs and electroweak diboson production results from LHC Runs 1 and 2 as well as the electroweak precision data, in terms of the dimension-six operators. Under the assumption that no new tree level sources of flavor violation nor violation of universality of the weak current is introduced, the analysis involves 21 operators. We assess the impact of the data on kinematic distributions for the Higgs production at the LHC by comparing the results obtained including the simplified template cross section data with…
Current discussions of the allowed two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) parameter space after LHC Run 1 and the prospects for Run 2 are commonly phrased in the context of a quasi-degenerate spectrum for the new scalars. Here we discuss the generic situation of a 2HDM with a non-degenerate spectrum for the new scalars. This is highly motivated from a cosmological perspective since it naturally leads to a strongly first order electroweak phase transition that could explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. While constraints from measurements of Higgs signal strengths do not change, thos…
We analyze the impact of the recently released CDF-II measurement of $W$ mass on the SMEFT analyses of the electroweak precision data as well as Higgs and electroweak diboson productions. We work in the Hagiwara, Ishihara, Szalapski, and Zeppenfeld basis in which eight generation-independent operators enter in the electroweak precision data at tree level and, unlike in the Warsaw basis, the analysis of that set of data constrains all the eight Wilson coefficients, without the need of combination with Higgs or electroweak diboson data results. We show that in the global analysis the determinati…
We revisit the extraction of the triple electroweak gauge boson couplings from the Large Hadron Collider Run I data on the $W^+W^-$ and $W^\pm Z$ productions when the analysis also contains additional operators that modify the couplings of the gauge bosons to light quarks and the gauge boson self-energies. We work in the framework of effective Lagrangians where we consider dimension-six operators and perform a global fit to consistently take into account the bounds on these additional operators originating from the electroweak precision data. We show that the constraints on the Wilson coeffici…
We discuss possible ways to observationally detect the superdense cosmic objects composed of hypothetical sub-constituent fermions beneath the quark/lepton level, recently proposed by us. The characteristic mass and size of such objects depend on the compositeness scale, and their huge density cannot arise within a context of quarks and leptons alone. Their eventual observation would therefore be a direct vindication of physics beyond the standard model of particle physics, possibly far beyond the reach of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in a relatively simple and inexpensive manner. If relic…

One major challenge for the legacy measurements at the LHC is that the likelihood function is not tractable when the collected data is high-dimensional and the detector response has to be modeled. We review how different analysis strategies solve this issue, including the traditional histogram approach used in most particle physics analyses, the Matrix Element Method, Optimal Observables, and modern techniques based on neural density estimation. We then discuss powerful new inference methods that use a combination of matrix element information and machine learning to accurately estimate the li…
Higgs boson may be a composite particle as Sakata vigorously looked for never-ending substructures of Nature. He proposed the Sakata model for hadrons, which was the prototype of the quark model and thus lauched the last Revolution in particle physics continued all the way up to Kabayashi-Maskawa work which completed the Standard Model today. Inspired by the Sakata's spirit we shall discuss composite Higgs boson in various models of our own for the dynamical symmetry breaking with large anomalous dimension: The techni-dilaton in the walking technicolor (WTC) with $γ_m \simeq 1$, the $\bar t t$…
In this contribution to the volume "From My Vast Repertoire -- The Legacy of Guido Altarelli" I discuss selected topics of Standard Model (SM) physics at the LHC and their connection to the work of Guido Altarelli. An overarching connection is given by Guido's fundamental contributions to our understanding of the strong force, parton distribution functions and their evolution, and techniques to calculate theoretical predictions through perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. The increasingly precise LHC measurements of diverse processes can be confronted with SM predictions relying on these found…
The major contributions of Richard H. Dalitz to hypernuclear physics, since his first paper in 1955 to his last one in 2005 covering a span of 50 years during which he founded and led the theoretical study of hypernuclei, are reviewed from a personal perspective. Topical remarks on the search for quasi-bound antikaon-nuclear states and on kaon condensation are made.

We consider the Higgs boson decay processes and its production including all Run I results, through a parametrisation tailored for testing models of new physics beyond the Standard Model, and complementary to the one used by the LHC working groups. Different formalisms allow to best address different aspects of the Higgs boson physics. The choice of a particular parametrisation depends on a non-obvious balance of quantity and quality of the available experimental data, envisaged purpose for the parametrisation and degree of model independence, importance of the radiative corrections, and scale…

A summary of the prospects for top-quark physics at the High Luminosity LHC.
LHCb is a dedicated detector for $b$ and $c$ physics at the LHC. I will present a concise review of the detector design and performance together with a selection of early physics results and prospects. The integrated luminosity of $37 \rm{pb}^{-1}$ collected in 2010 has already allowed LHCb to perform a number of a very significant measurements, while the data expected for 2011 have the potential of revealing New Physics effects in the $B_s $ sector.
I will argue that the same kind of reasoning, which led us to predict the opening of a new chapter in hadron physics, may shed some light on the existence of new physics at the as yet unexplored energy scales of LHC.
With the LHC up and running, the focus of experimental and theoretical high energy physics will soon turn to an interpretation of LHC data in terms of the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking and the TeV scale. We present here a broad review of models for new TeV-scale physics and their LHC signatures. In addition, we discuss possible new physics signatures and describe how they can be linked to specific models of physics beyond the Standard Model. Finally, we illustrate how the LHC era could culminate in a detailed understanding of the underlying principles of TeV-scale physics.

The existing limits on Z' gauge bosons and prospects for discovery and diagnostic studies at the LHC are briefly reviewed.
Heavy flavour physics provides excellent opportunities to indirectly search for new physics at very high energy scales and to study hadron properties for deep understanding of the strong interaction. The LHCb experiment has been playing a leading role in the study of heavy flavour physics since the start of the LHC operations about ten years ago, and made a range of high-precision measurements and unexpected discoveries, which may have far-reaching implications on the field of particle physics. This review highlights a selection of the most influential physics results on CP violation, rare dec…
Recent developments in prospects of searching for Higgs particles and testing their properties at the LHC and at TeV e+e- linear colliders are summarized. The discovery limits of supersymmetric particles at the LHC are presented and the accuracy is explored with which the fundamental SUSY parameters in the context of supergravity models can be determined at high-luminosity linear colliders. Finally, new discovery limits for gauge bosons in left-right symmetric models at the LHC are presented.
We describe different physics topics which can be performed at the LHC using tagged intact protons, namely a better understanding of the Pomeron structure in terms of quarks and gluons, and the serach for quartic anomalous couplings.
The prospects for electroweak physics at the LHC are reviewed focusing mainly on precision studies. This includes projections for measurements of the effective Z pole weak mixing angle, of top quark, W boson, and Higgs scalar properties, and new physics searches.
The LHC Collider Ring is proposed to be turned into an ultimate automatic search engine for new physics in four consecutive phases: (1) Searches for heavy particles produced in Central Exclusive Process (CEP): pp -> p + X + p based on the existing Beam Loss Monitoring (BLM) system of the LHC; (2) Feasibility study of using the LHC Ring as a gravitation wave antenna; (3) Extensions to the current BLM system to facilitate precise registration of the selected CEP proton exit points from the LHC beam vacuum chamber; (4) Integration of the BLM based event tagging system together with the trigger/da…
Run 2 of the LHC offers some beautiful prospects for new physics, including flavour physics as well as more detailed studies of the Higgs boson and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). One of the possibilities for BSM physics is supersymmetry, and flavour physics plays various important rôles in constraining supersymmetric models.
These lecture notes discuss methods, recent results and future prospects in proton-proton physics at the Large Hadron Collider.
By combining the LHC Beam Loss Monitoring (BLM) system with the LHC experiments, a powerful search machine for new physics beyond the standard model can be realised. The pair of final state protons in the central production process, exit the LHC beam vacuum chamber at locations determined by their fractional momentum losses and will be detected by the BLM detectors. By mapping out the coincident pairs of the BLM identified proton candidates around the four LHC interaction regions, a scan for centrally produced particle states can be made independently of their decay modes.
High-energy collisions at the LHC are now starting. The new physics agenda of the LHC is reviewed, with emphasis on the hunt for the Higgs boson (or whatever replaces it) and supersymmetry. In particular, the prospects for discovering new physics in the 2010-2011 run are discussed.
LHCb is a dedicated detector for b and c physics at the LHC. I will present a concise review of the detector design and expected performance together with some first results on the commissioning of the different sub-systems based on cosmic data and particle beams delivered by the LHC during the summer of 2008. The experiment is ready to exploit first data expected from the LHC. An integrated luminosity of ~0.3fb-1, which should be collected during the first year of physics running, will already allow LHCb to perform a number of very significant mesurements with the potential of revealing New P…
We address the potential of measurements with boosted single-top final states at the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and possible future hadron colliders: the high-energy LHC (HE-LHC), and the future circular collider (FCC). As new physics examples to assess the potential, we consider the search for $tbW$ anomalous couplings and for a weakly-coupled $W'$ boson. The FCC would improve by a factor of two the sensitivity to anomalous couplings of the HL-LHC. For $W'$ bosons, the FCC is sensitive to $W'$ couplings $2-5$ times smaller than the HL-LHC in the mass range 2-4 TeV, and to masses up to 30 Te…
The dijet signature at the LHC is studied in new physics models for the top forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron. In the t-mediator models, flavor-changing interactions contribute to the dijet production cross section as well as the asymmetry at least at the one-loop level. It is found that the LHC dijet measurements at 36pb^(-1) have constrained the Z' coupling larger than 2.5-3. The sensitivity is expected to be improved significantly as the integrated luminosity increases in the LHC.
After recalling episodes from Pascual Jordan's biography including his pivotal role in the shaping of quantum field theory and his much criticized conduct during the NS regime, I draw attention to his presentation of the first phase of development of quantum field theory in a talk presented at the 1929 Kharkov conference. He starts by giving a comprehensive account of the beginnings of quantum theory, emphasising that particle-like properties arise as a consequence of treating wave-motions quantum-mechanically. He then goes on to his recent discovery of quantization of ``wave fields'' and prob…
We review statistical methods used for the search for new physics at LHC.
Construction of future Muon Collider tangential to the Large Hadron Collider will give opportunity to realize mu-p collisions at multi-TeV center of mass energies. Using nominal parameters of high luminosity and high energy upgrades of the LHC, as well as design parameters of muon colliders, it is shown that L_mu-p of order of 10^33 cm^-2s^-1 is achievable for different options with sqrt(s)_mu-p from 4.58 TeV to 12.7 TeV. Certainly, proposed mu-p colliders have a huge potential for clarifying QCD basics and searches for new physics.
We start by remarks on the scientific and societal context of today's theoretical physics. Major classes of models for physics to be explored at the LHC are then reviewed. This leads us to propose an LHC timeline and a list of potential effects on theoretical physics and the society. We then explore three conceptual questions connected with the LHC physics: symmetry (and symmetry breaking), effective field theory, and fine tuning.

In this contribution to the special issue "Celebrating 30 years of Steven Weinberg's papers on Nuclear Forces from Chiral Lagrangians," we emphasize the important role chiral effective field theory has played in leading nuclear physics into a precision era. To this end, we share our perspective on a few of the recent advances made in ab initio calculations of nuclear structure and nuclear matter observables, as well as Bayesian uncertainty quantification of effective field theory truncation errors.
We outline the opportunities for spin physics which are offered by a next generation and multi-purpose fixed-target experiment exploiting the proton LHC beam extracted by a bent crystal. In particular, we focus on the study of single transverse spin asymetries with the polarisation of the target.
The physics perspectives of the production and decay of single top quarks and top quark pairs at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are reviewed from a phenomenological point of view.
The expected sensitivity of the LHC experiments to the discovery of the Higgs boson and the measurement of its properties is presented in the context of both the standard model and the its minimal supersymmetric extension. Prospects for a luminosity-upgraded ``Super-LHC'' are also presented.
The prospects for physics at the LHC are discussed, starting with the foretaste, preparation (and perhaps scoop) provided by the Tevatron, in particular, and then continuing through the successive phases of LHC operation. These include the start-up phase, the early physics runs, the possible search for new physics in double diffraction, the continuation to nominal LHC running, and the possible upgrade of the LHC luminosity. Emphasis is placed on the prospects for Higgs physics and the search for supersymmetry. The progress and discoveries of the LHC will set the time-scale and agenda for the m…

The LHC will soon provide proton-proton collisions at the unprecedented center of mass energy, $\sqrt{s}=$14 TeV. This not only allows us to probe new regions of high-$p_T$ physics, but also low-$x$ and forward physics. A selection of potential measurements are described to outline the prospects for low-$x$ and forward physics in the ATLAS, CMS, TOTEM, and LHCf experiments.
I present a concise review of where we stand in particle physics today. First, I will discuss the status of the Standard Model, its open problems and the expected answers from the LHC. Then I will briefly review the avenues for New Physics that can be revealed by the LHC.
We outline the case for heavy-ion-physics studies using the multi-TeV lead LHC beams in the fixed-target mode. After a brief contextual reminder, we detail the possible contributions of AFTER@LHC to heavy-ion physics with a specific emphasis on quarkonia. We then present performance simulations for a selection of observables. These show that $Υ(nS)$, $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ production in heavy-ion collisions can be studied in new energy and rapidity domains with the LHCb and ALICE detectors. We also discuss the relevance to analyse the Drell-Yan pair production in asymmetric nucleus-nucleus collisio…

We review the theoretical and experimental motivations behind recent proposals to add forward proton tagging detectors to the LHC experiments as a means to search for new physics.
We review some peculiar features of Sudakov expansions in the calculation of electroweak radiative corrections in the MSSM at high energy. We give specific examples and consider in particular the process b g -> t W of single top quark production relevant for the top quark physics programme at LHC.
We summarize the status of QCD corrections for SM Higgs boson production at hadron colliders and briefly sketch the main search strategies at the LHC.
We discuss the status of the theoretical predictions of some interesting b-physics observables that are sensitive to New Physics and can be measured at the LHC.
