The commuting conjugacy class graph of a non-abelian group $G$, denoted by $\mathcal{CCC}(G)$, is a simple undirected graph whose vertex set is the set of conjugacy classes of the non-central elements of $G$ and two distinct vertices $x^G$ and $y^G$ are adjacent if there exists some elements $x' \in x^G$ and $y' \in y^G$ such that $x'y' = y'x'$. In this paper we compute various spectra and energies of commuting conjugacy class graph of the groups $D_{2n}, Q_{4m}, U_{(n, m)}, V_{8n}$ and $SD_{8n}$. Our computation shows that $\mathcal{CCC}(G)$ is super integral for these groups. We compare various energies and as a consequence it is observed that $\mathcal{CCC}(G)$ satisfy E-LE Conjecture of Gutman et al. We also provide negative answer to a question posed by Dutta et al. comparing Laplacian and Signless Laplacian energy. Finally, we conclude this paper by characterizing the above mentioned groups $G$ such that $\mathcal{CCC}(G)$ is hyperenergetic, L-hyperenergetic or Q-hyperenergetic.
Let $G$ be a finite group. This expository article explores the subject of commuting probability in the group $G$ and its relation with simultaneous conjugacy classes of commuting tuples in $G$. We also point out the relevance of this topic in context of topology where similar problems are studied when $G$ is a Lie group.
In this paper we compute spectrum, Laplacian spectrum, signless Laplacian spectrum and their corresponding energies of commuting conjugacy class graph of the group $G(p, m, n) = \langle x, y : x^{p^m} = y^{p^n} = [x, y]^p = 1, [x, [x, y]] = [y, [x, y]] = 1\rangle$, where $p$ is any prime, $m \geq 1$ and $n \geq 1$. We derive some consequences along with the fact that commuting conjugacy class graph of $G(p, m, n)$ is super integral. We also compare various energies and determine whether commuting conjugacy class graph of $G(p, m, n)$ is hyperenergetic, L-hyperenergetic or Q-hyperenergetic.
In this paper we compute common neighbourhood (abbreviated as CN) spectrum and energy of commuting conjugacy class graph of several families of finite non-abelian groups. As a consequence of our results we show that the commuting conjugacy class graphs of the groups $D_{2n}$, $T_{4n}$, $SD_{8n}$, $U_{(n,m)}$, $U_{6n}$, $V_{8n}$, $G(p, m, n)$ and some families of groups whose central quotient is isomorphic to $D_{2n}$ or $Z_p \times Z_p$, for some prime $p$, are CN-integral but not CN-hyperenergetic.
The set of all centralizers of elements in a finite group $G$ is denoted by $Cent(G)$ and $G$ is called $n-$centralizer if $|Cent(G)| = n$. In this paper, the structure of centralizers in a non-abelian finite group $G$ with this property that $\frac{G}{Z(G)} \cong Z_{p^2} \rtimes Z_{p^2}$ is obtained. As a consequence, it is proved that such a group has exactly $[(p+1)^2+1]$ element centralizers and the structure of the commuting conjugacy class graph of $G$ is completely determined.
For a non-abelian group $G$, its commuting conjugacy class graph $\mathcal{CCC}(G)$ is a simple undirected graph whose vertex set is the set of conjugacy classes of the non-central elements of $G$ and two distinct vertices $x^G$ and $y^G$ are adjacent if there exists some elements $x' \in x^G$ and $y' \in y^G$ such that $x'y' = y'x'$. In this paper we compute the genus of $\mathcal{CCC}(G)$ for six well-known classes of non-abelian two-generated groups (viz. $D_{2n}, SD_{8n}, Q_{4m}, V_{8n}, U_{(n, m)}$ and $G(p, m, n)$) and determine whether $\mathcal{CCC}(G)$ for these groups are planar, tor…
For a finite group $G$, we consider the problem of counting simultaneous conjugacy classes of $n$-tuples and simultaneous conjugacy classes of commuting $n$-tuples in $G$. Let $α_{G,n}$ denote the number of simultaneous conjugacy classes of $n$-tuples, and $β_{G,n}$ the number of simultaneous conjugacy classes of commuting $n$-tuples in $G$. The generating functions $A_G(t) = \sum_{n\geq 0} α_{G,n}t^n,$ and $B_G(t) = \sum_{n\geq 0} β_{G,n}t^n$ are rational functions of $t$. This paper concern studied of normalized functions $A_G(t/|G|)$ and $B_G(t/|G|)$ for finite $p$-groups of rank at most $5…
In this article we consider commuting graphs of involution conjugacy classes in the affine Weyl group of type $\tilde C_n$. We show that where the graph is connected the diameter is at most $n+2$.
Let G be a finite group. Define a relation ~ on the conjugacy classes of G by setting C ~ D if there are representatives c \in C and d \in D such that cd = dc. In the case where G has a normal subgroup H such that G/H is cyclic, two theorems are proved concerning the distribution, between cosets of H, of pairs of conjugacy classes of G related by ~. One of the proofs involves an interesting application of the famous Marriage Theorem of Philip Hall. The paper concludes by discussing some aspects of these theorems and of the relation ~ in the particular cases of symmetric and general linear grou…

We show that $A_G(t)$ determines and is completely determined by the class equation of $G$. We show that $α_{G,n}$ gro…
In this paper we investigate commuting involution graphs in classical affine Weyl groups. Let $W$ be a classical Weyl group of rank $n$, with $\tilde W$ its corresponding affine Weyl group. Our main result is that if $X$ is a conjugacy class of involutions in $\tilde W$, then the commuting involution graph $\mathcal{C}(\tilde W, X)$ is either disconnected or has diameter at most $n+2$. This bound is known to hold for types $\tilde A_n$ and $\tilde C_n$, so the main work of this paper is to prove the theorem for types $\tilde B_n$ and $\tilde D_n$.
Motivated in part by representation theoretic questions, we prove that if G is a finite quasi-simple group, then there exists an elementary abelian subgroup of G that intersects every conjugacy class of involutions of G.
The moduli space for a flat G-bundle over the two-torus is completely determined by its holonomy representation. When G is compact, connected, and simply connected, we show that the moduli space is homeomorphic to a product of two tori mod the action of the Weyl group, or equivalently to the conjugacy classes of commuting pairs of elements in G. Since the component group for a non-simply connected group is given by some finite dimensional subgroup in the centralizer of an n-tuple, we use diagram automorphisms of the extended Dynkin diagram to prove properties of centralizers of pairs of elemen…
This paper concerns the enumeration of simultaneous conjugacy classes of tuples of commuting unitary matrices and of commuting symplectic matrices over a finite field $\mathbf{F}_q$ of odd size. For any given conjugacy class, the orbits for the action of its centralizer group on itself by conjugation are called branches. We determine the branching rules for the unitary groups $U_2(\mathbf{F}_q), U_3(\mathbf{F}_q)$, and for the symplectic groups $Sp_2(\mathbf{F}_q), Sp_4(\mathbf{F}_q)$.
For a finite group $G$, let $d(G)$ denote the probability that a randomly chosen pair of elements of $G$ commute. We prove that if $d(G)>1/s$ for some integer $s>1$ and $G$ splits over an abelian normal nontrivial subgroup $N$, then $G$ has a nontrivial conjugacy class inside $N$ of size at most $s-1$. We also extend two results of Barry, MacHale, and N\'ı Shé on the commuting probability in connection with supersolvability of finite groups. In particular, we prove that if $d(G)>5/16$ then either $G$ is supersolvable, or $G$ isoclinic to $A_4$, or $G/\Center(G)$ is isoclinic to $A_4$.
We describe the components of the moduli space of conjugacy classes of commuting pairs and triples of elements in a compact Lie group. This description is in terms of the extended Dynkin diagram of the simply connected cover, together with the coroot integers and the action of the fundamental group. In the case of three commuting elements, we compute Chern-Simons invariants associated to the corresponding flat bundles over the three-torus, and verify a conjecture of Witten which reveals a surprising symmetry involving the Chern-Simons invariants and the dimensions of the components of the modu…
In this paper we study probabilistic aspects such as (cyclic) subgroup commutativity degree and (cyclic) factorization number of ZM-groups. We show that these quantities can be computed using the sizes of the conjugacy classes of these groups. In the end, we point out a class of groups whose (cyclic) subgroup commutativity degree vanishes asymptotically.
For any (Hausdorff) compact group $G$ with the normalized Haar measure ${\mathbf m}_G$, denote by ${\rm cp}(G)$ the probability ${\mathbf m}_{G\times G}(\{(x,y)\in G\times G \;|\; xy=yx\})$ of commuting a randomly chosen pair of elements of $G$. Here we prove that if ${\rm cp}(G)>0$, then there exists a finite group $H$ such that ${\rm cp}(G)= \frac{{\rm cp}(H)}{|G:F|^2}$, where $F$ is the FC-center of $G$ i.e. the set of all elements of $G$ whose conjugacy classes are finite and $H$ is isoclinic to $F$ with ${\rm cp}(F)={\rm cp}(H)$. The latter equality enables one to transfer many existing r…
We give characterizations of the center, of conjugated and of commuting elements in a fundamental group of a graph of group. We deduce various results : on the one hand we give a sufficient condition for the center, the centralizers, and the root structures in such a group to be in some sense trivial, and on the other hand we prove that for any group G, the conjugacy problem reduces to the same problem in a double of G along any finite family of subgroups.
For a finite group $G$, let $B$ be an equivalence (equality, conjugacy or order) relation on $G$ and let $A$ be a (power, enhanced power or commuting) graph with vertex set $G$. The $B$ super $A$ graph is a simple graph with vertex set $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if either they are in the same $B$-equivalence class or there are elements in their $B$-equivalence classes that are adjacent in the original $A$ graph. The graph obtained by deleting the dominant vertices (adjacent to all other vertices) from a $B$ super $A$ graph is called the reduced $B$ super $A$ graph. In this article, for …
We prove that if a countable group $Γ$ contains infinite commuting subgroups $H, H'\subset Γ$ with $H$ non-amenable and $H'$ ``weakly normal'' in $Γ$, then any measure preserving $Γ$-action on a probability space which satisfies certain malleability, spectral gap and weak mixing conditions (e.g. a Bernoulli $Γ$-action) is cocycle superrigid. If in addition $H'$ can be taken non-virtually abelian and $Γ\curvearrowright X$ is an arbitrary free ergodic action while $Λ\curvearrowright Y=\Bbb T^Λ$ is a Bernoulli action of an arbitrary infinite conjugacy class group, then any isomorphism of the asso…
Let $G$ be a finite group and $π$ be a permutation from $S_{n}$. We investigate the distribution of the probabilities of the equality \[ a_{1}a_{2}\cdots a_{n-1}a_{n}=a_{π_{1}}a_{π_{2}}\cdots a_{π_{n-1}}a_{π_{n}} \] when $π$ varies over all the permutations in $S_{n}$. The probability \[ Pr_π(G)=Pr(a_{1}a_{2}\cdots a_{n-1}a_{n}=a_{π_{1}}a_{π_{2}}\cdots a_{π_{n-1}}a_{π_{n}}) \] is identical to $Pr_{1}^ω(G)$, with \[ ω=a_{1}a_{2}...a_{n-1}a_{n}a_{π_{1}}^{-1}a_{π_{2}}^{-1}\cdots a_{π_{n-1}}^{-1}a_{π_{n}}^{-1}, \] as it is defined in \cite{DasNath1} and \cite{NathDash1}. The notion of commutativit…
Let G be a group, and let M=(m_n) be a sequence of finitely supported probability measures on G. Consider the probability that two elements chosen independently according to m_n commute. Antolin, Martino and Ventura define the 'degree of commutativity' dc_M(G) of G with respect to this sequence to be the lim sup of this probability. The main results of the present paper give quantitative algebraic consequences of the degree of commutativity being above certain thresholds. For example, if m_n is the distribution of the nth step of a symmetric random walk on G, or if G is amenable and (m_n) is a…
Let $\tilde f\colon(S^2,\tilde A)\to(S^2,\tilde A)$ be a Thurston map and let $M(\tilde f)$ be its mapping class biset: isotopy classes rel $\tilde A$ of maps obtained by pre- and post-composing $\tilde f$ by the mapping class group of $(S^2,\tilde A)$. Let $A\subseteq\tilde A$ be an $\tilde f$-invariant subset, and let $f\colon(S^2,A)\to(S^2,A)$ be the induced map. We give an analogue of the Birman short exact sequence: just as the mapping class group $\mathrm{Mod}(S^2,\tilde A)$ is an iterated extension of $\mathrm{Mod}(S^2,A)$ by fundamental groups of punctured spheres, $M(\tilde f)$ is an …
The twin group $T_n$ is a right angled Coxeter group generated by $n-1$ involutions and the pure twin group $PT_n$ is the kernel of the natural surjection from $T_n$ onto the symmetric group on $n$ symbols. In this paper, we investigate some structural aspects of these groups. We derive a formula for the number of conjugacy classes of involutions in $T_n$, which quite interestingly, is related to the well-known Fibonacci sequence. We also derive a recursive formula for the number of $z$-classes of involutions in $T_n$. We give a new proof of the structure of $\Aut(T_n)$ for $n \ge 3$, and show…
Baumslag-Solitar groups were introduced in 1962 by Baumslag and Solitar as examples for finitely presented non-Hopfian two-generator groups. Since then, they served as examples for a wide range of purposes. As Baumslag-Solitar groups are HNN extensions, there is a natural generalization in terms of graph of groups. Concerning algorithmic aspects of generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups, several decidability results are known. Indeed, a straightforward application of standard algorithms leads to a polynomial time solution of the word problem (the question whether some word over the generators rep…
By studying the commuting graphs of conjugacy classes of the sequence of Heisenberg groups $H_{2n+1}(p)$ and their limit $H_\infty(p)$ we find pseudo-random behavior (and the random graph in the limiting case). This makes a nice case study for transfer of information between finite and infinite objects. Some of this behavior transfers to the problem of understanding what makes understanding the character theory of the uni-upper-triangular group (mod p) "wild". Our investigations in this paper may be seen as a meditation on the question: is randomness simple or is it complicated?
We consider "Thurston maps": branched self-coverings of the sphere with ultimately periodic critical points, and prove that the Thurston equivalence problem between them (continuous deformation of maps along with their critical orbits) is decidable. More precisely, we consider the action of mapping class groups, by pre- and post-composition, on branched coverings, and encode them algebraically as "mapping class bisets". We show how the mapping class biset of maps preserving a multicurve decomposes into mapping class bisets of smaller complexity, called "small mapping class bisets". We phrase t…
For a group $G$ and a finite set $A$, denote by $\text{End}(A^G)$ the monoid of all continuous shift commuting self-maps of $A^G$ and by $\text{Aut}(A^G)$ its group of units. We study the minimal cardinality of a generating set, known as the rank, of $\text{End}(A^G)$ and $\text{Aut}(A^G)$. In the first part, when $G$ is a finite group, we give upper and lower bounds for the rank of $\text{Aut}(A^G)$ in terms of the number of conjugacy classes of subgroups of $G$. In the second part, we apply our bounds to show that if $G$ has an infinite descending chain of normal subgroups of finite index, t…
We develop a general theory of "bisets": sets with two commuting group actions. They naturally encode topological correspondences. Just as van Kampen's theorem decomposes into a graph of groups the fundamental group of a space given with a cover, we prove analogously that the biset of a correspondence decomposes into a "graph of bisets": a graph with bisets at its vertices, given with some natural maps. The "fundamental biset" of the graph of bisets recovers the original biset. We apply these results to decompose the biset of a Thurston map (a branched self-covering of the sphere whose critica…
Let $G$ be a finite group. A number of graphs with the vertex set $G$ have been studied, including the power graph, enhanced power graph, and commuting graph. These graphs form a hierarchy under the inclusion of edge sets, and it is useful to study them together. In addition, several authors have considered modifying the definition of these graphs by choosing a natural equivalence relation on the group such as equality, conjugacy, or equal orders, and joining two elements if there are elements in their equivalence class that are adjacent in the original graph. In this way, we enlarge the hiera…
These notes concern aspects of various graphs whose vertex set is a group $G$ and whose edges reflect group structure in some way (so that they are invariant under the action of the automorphism group of $G$). The graphs I will discuss are the power graph, enhanced power graph, deep commuting graph, commuting graph, and non-generating graph, though I give a briefer discussion of the nilpotence and solvability graphs, and make some remarks on more general graphs. Aspects to be discussed include induced subgraphs, forbidden subgraphs, connectedness, and automorphism groups. We can also ask about…
In comparison to graphs, combinatorial methods for the isomorphism problem of finite groups are less developed than algebraic ones. To be able to investigate the descriptive complexity of finite groups and the group isomorphism problem, we define the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm for groups. In fact we define three versions of the algorithm. In contrast to graphs, where the three analogous versions readily agree, for groups the situation is more intricate. For groups, we show that their expressive power is linearly related. We also give descriptions in terms of counting logics and bijective pebbl…

For a finite group $G$ and a finite set $A$, we study various algebraic aspects of cellular automata over the configuration space $A^G$. In this situation, the set $\text{CA}(G;A)$ of all cellular automata over $A^G$ is a finite monoid whose basic algebraic properties had remained unknown. First, we investigate the structure of the group of units $\text{ICA}(G;A)$ of $\text{CA}(G;A)$. We obtain a decomposition of $\text{ICA}(G;A)$ into a direct product of wreath products of groups that depends on the numbers $α_{[H]}$ of periodic configurations for conjugacy classes $[H]$ of subgroups of $G$. …
