We calculate the energy levels corresponding to the Roper resonance based on a two-flavor chiral effective Lagrangian for pions, nucleons, deltas and the Roper resonance at leading one-loop order. We show that the Roper mass can be extracted from these levels for not too large lattice volumes.
The finite-volume energy levels corresponding to the Roper resonance based on a two-flavor chiral effective Lagrangian at leading one-loop order are investigated. It is shown that the Roper mass can be extracted from these levels for not too large lattice volumes. Further, to include three-body $N ππ$ dynamics, a non-relativistic effective field theory for the Roper resonance within a covariant particle-dimer picture is introduced. This particle-dimer approach is a suitable framework to investigate three-particle scattering relevant for the Roper channel. The appearing dimer fields are analyze…
The present status of the Roper resonance in lattice QCD is reviewed. Some of the latest lattice results are discussed with particular emphasis on a large systematic error stemming from the finite size effect. These results suggest that the Roper resonance can be described by the simple three quark excitation of sizable extent.
A Dyson-Schwinger equation calculation of the light hadron spectrum, which correlates the masses of meson and baryon ground- and excited-states within a single framework, produces a description of the Roper resonance that corresponds closely with conclusions drawn recently by EBAC. Namely, the Roper is a particular type of radial excitation of the nucleon's dressed-quark core augmented by a material meson cloud component. There are, in addition, some surprises.
Two different descriptions of the existing pion-nucleon scattering data in the region of the Roper resonance are constructed. Both descriptions fit the experimental data very well. In one scenario the resonance is the result of strong rescattering between coupled meson-baryon channels, while in the other scenario, the resonance has a large bare-baryon (or quark-model like) component. The predictions of these two scenarios are compared with the latest lattice QCD simulation results in this channel. Consideration of the finite volume spectra, the manner in which the states are excited from the v…
We employ a continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory to predict a range of properties of the proton's radial excitation and thereby unify them with those of numerous other hadrons. Our analysis indicates that the nucleon's first radial excitation is the Roper resonance. It consists of a core of three dressed-quarks, which expresses its valence-quark content and whose charge radius is 80% larger than the proton analogue. That core is complemented by a meson cloud, which reduces the observed Roper mass by roughly 20%. The meson cloud …
For half a century, the Roper resonance has defied understanding. Discovered in 1963, it appears to be an exact copy of the proton except that its mass is 50% greater. The mass is the first problem: it is difficult to explain with any theoretical tool that can validly be used to study quantum chromodynamics [QCD]. In the last decade, a new challenge has appeared, viz. precise information on the proton-to-Roper electroproduction transition form factors, reaching $Q^2\approx 4.5\,$GeV$^2$. This scale probes the domain within which hard valence-quark degrees-of-freedom could be expected to determ…
We present a new method for extracting excited states from a single two-point correlation function calculated on the lattice. Our method simply combines the correlation function evaluated at different time slices so as to ``subtract'' the leading exponential decay (ground state) and to give access to the first excited state. The method is applied to a quenched lattice study (volume = 24^3 x 64, beta = 6.2, 1/a = 2.55 GeV) of the first excited state of the nucleon using the local interpolating operator O = [uT C gamma5 d] u. The results are consistent with the identification of our extracted ex…
We present a lattice QCD study of the puzzling positive-parity nucleon channel, where the Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$ resides in experiment. The study is based on an ensemble of gauge configurations with $N_f=2+1$ Wilson-clover fermions with a pion mass of $156$ MeV and lattice size $L=2.9$ fm. We use several $qqq$ interpolating fields combined with $Nπ$ and $Nσ$ two-hadron operators in calculating the energy spectrum in the rest frame. Combining experimental $Nπ$ phase shifts with elastic approximation and the Lüscher formalism suggests in the spectrum an additional energy level near the Rope…
We present results for the first positive parity excited state of the nucleon, namely, the Roper resonance ($N^{{1/2}^{+}}$=1440 MeV) from a variational analysis technique. The analysis is performed for pion masses as low as 224 MeV in quenched QCD with the FLIC fermion action. A wide variety of smeared-smeared correlation functions are used to construct correlation matrices. This is done in order to find a suitable basis of operators for the variational analysis such that eigenstates of the QCD Hamiltonian may be isolated. A lower lying Roper state is observed that approaches the physical Rop…
Using the constrained curve fitting method and overlap fermions with the lowest pion mass at $180 {\rm MeV}$, we observe that the masses of the first positive and negative parity excited states of the nucleon tend to cross over as the quark masses are taken to the chiral limit. Both results at the physical pion mass agree with the experimental values of the Roper resonance ($N^{1/2+}(1440)$) and $S_{11}$ ($N^{1/2-}(1535)$). This is seen for the first time in a lattice QCD calculation. These results are obtained on a quenched Iwasaki $16^3 \times 28$ lattice with $a = 0.2 {\rm fm}$. We also ext…
We present results from our recent lattice QCD study of $Nπ$ scattering in the positive-parity nucleon channel, where the puzzling Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$ resides in experiment. Using a variety of hadron operators, that include $qqq$-like, $Nπ$ in $p$-wave and $Nσ$ in $s$-wave, we systematically extract the excited lattice spectrum in the nucleon channel up to 1.65 GeV. Our lattice results indicate that N$π$ scattering in the elastic approximation alone does not describe a low-lying Roper. Coupled channel effects between $Nπ$ and $Nππ$ seem to be crucial to render a low-lying Roper in expe…
We present the first quantum field theory calculation of the pointwise behaviour of the leading-twist parton distribution amplitudes (PDAs) of the proton and its lightest radial excitation. The proton's PDA is a broad, concave function, whose maximum is shifted relative to the peak in QCD's conformal limit expression for this PDA; an effect which signals the presence of both scalar and pseudovector diquark correlations in the nucleon, with the scalar generating around 60% of the proton's normalisation. The radial-excitation is constituted similarly, and the pointwise form of its PDA, which is …
We examine the phase shifts and inelasticities associated with the $N^*(1440)$ Roper resonance and connect these infinite-volume observables to the finite-volume spectrum of lattice QCD using Hamiltonian effective field theory. We explore three hypotheses for the structure of the Roper resonance. All three hypotheses are able to describe the scattering data well. In the third hypothesis the Roper resonance couples the low-lying bare basis-state component associated with the ground state nucleon with the virtual meson-baryon contributions. Here the non-trivial superpositions of the meson-baryon…
This brief review focuses on the low-lying even- and odd-parity excitations of the nucleon obtained in recent lattice QCD calculations. Commencing with a survey of the 2014-15 literature we'll see that results for the first even-parity excitation energy can differ by as much as 1 GeV, a rather unsatisfactory situation. Following a brief review of the methods used to isolate excitations of the nucleon in lattice QCD, and drawing on recent advances, we'll see how a consensus on the low-lying spectrum has emerged among many different lattice groups. To provide insight into the nature of these sta…
We present a lattice QCD study of $Nπ$ scattering in the positive-parity nucleon channel, where the puzzling Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$ resides in experiment. The study is based on the PACS-CS ensemble of gauge configurations with $N_f=2+1$ Wilson-clover dynamical fermions, $m_π\simeq 156~$MeV and $L\simeq 2.9~$fm. In addition to a number of $qqq$ interpolating fields, we implement operators for $Nπ$ in $p$-wave and $Nσ$ in $s$-wave. In the center-of-momentum frame we find three eigenstates below 1.65 GeV. They are dominated by $N(0)$, $N(0)π(0)π(0)$ (mixed with $N(0)σ(0)$) and $N(p)π(-p)$ wi…
The low-lying even-parity states of the nucleon are explored in lattice QCD using the PACS-CS collaboration 2+1-flavor dynamical-QCD gauge-field configurations made available through the International Lattice Datagrid (ILDG). The established correlation-matrix approach is used, in which various fermion source and sink smearings are utilized to provide an effective basis of interpolating fields to span the space of low-lying energy eigenstates. Of particular interest is the nature of the first excited state of the nucleon, the $N{1/2}^{+}$ Roper resonance of $P_{11}$ pion-nucleon scattering. Th…
The origin of the low-lying nature of the $N$*(1440), or Roper resonance, has been the subject of significant interest for many years, including several investigations using lattice QCD. The majority of lattice studies have not observed a low-lying excited state energy level in the region of the Roper resonance. However, it has been claimed that chiral symmetry could play an important role in our understanding of this resonance. The purpose of this study is to systematically examine the role of chiral symmetry in the low-lying nucleon spectrum by directly comparing the clover and overlap fermi…
The positive-parity nucleon spectrum is explored in $2 + 1$-flavour lattice QCD in a search for new low-lying energy eigenstates near the energy regime of the Roper resonance. In addition to conventional three-quark operators, we consider novel, local five-quark meson-baryon type interpolating fields that hold the promise to reveal new eigenstates that may have been missed in previous analyses. Drawing on phenomenological insight, five-quark operators based on $σ{N}$, $π{N}$ and $a_0{N}$ channels are constructed. Spectra are produced in a high-statistics analysis on the PACS-CS dynamical gauge…
The helicity amplitudes of the electroexcitation of the Roper resonance are extracted for 1.7 < Q2 < 4.5 GeV2 from recent high precision JLab-CLAS cross section and longitudinally polarized beam asymmetry data for pi+ electroproduction on protons at W=1.15-1.69 GeV. The analysis is made using two approaches, dispersion relations and a unitary isobar model, which give consistent results. It is found that the transverse helicity amplitude A_{1/2} for the gamma* p -> N(1440)P11 transition, which is large and negative at Q2=0, becomes large and positive at Q2 ~ 2 GeV2, and then drops slowly with Q…
Recent measurements of nucleon resonance transition form factors with CLAS at Jefferson Lab are discussed. The new data resolve a long-standing puzzle of the nature of the Roper resonance, and confirm the assertion of the symmetric constituent quark model of the Roper as the first radial excitation of the nucleon. The data on $nπ^+$ production at high $Q^2$ confirm the slow fall off of the $S_{11}(1535)$ transition form factor with $Q^2$, and better constrain the branching ratios $β_{Nπ}=0.50$ and $β_{Nη}=0.45$. Also, new results on the transition amplitudes for the $D_{13}(1520)$ resonance ar…
We study excited states of the nucleon in quenched lattice QCD with the spectral analysis using the maximum entropy method. Our simulations are performed on three lattice sizes $16^3\times 32$, $24^3\times 32$ and $32^3\times 32$, at $β=6.0$ to address the finite volume issue. We find a significant finite volume effect on the mass of the Roper resonance for light quark masses. After removing this systematic error, its mass becomes considerably reduced toward the direction to solve the level order puzzle between the Roper resonance $N'(1440)$ and the negative-parity nucleon $N^*(1535)$.
The positive-parity nucleon spectrum is studied in 2 + 1 flavour lattice QCD in an attempt to discover novel low-lying energy eigenstates in the region of the Roper resonance. In this work, we employ standard three-quark interpolating fields and introduce new local five-quark meson-baryon operators that hold the possibility of revealing new states that have been missed in previous studies. Motivated by phenomenological arguments, five-quark interpolators based on the $σ{N}$, $π{N}$ and $a_0{N}$ channels are constructed. Despite the introduction of qualitatively different operators, no novel en…
In present work, we explore and experiment an alternative approach of studying resonance properties in finite volume. By analytic continuing finite lattice size $L$ into complex plane, the oscillating behavior of finite volume Green's function is mapped into infinite volume Green's function corrected by exponentially decaying finite volume effect. The analytic continuation technique thus can be applied to study resonance properties directly in finite volume dynamical equations.
Under the assumption of separable interactions, we illustrate how the few-body quantization condition may be formulated in terms of phase shifts in general, which may be useful for describing and modeling of few-body resonances in finite volume.
A new method based on the concept of probability distribution is proposed to analyze the finite volume energy spectrum in lattice QCD. Using synthetic lattice data, we demonstrate that for the channel with quantum numbers of the Delta-resonance a clear resonance structure emerges in such an analysis. Consequently, measuring the volume-dependence of the energy levels in lattice QCD will allow to determine the mass and the width of the Delta with reasonable accuracy.
We present a way to evaluate the scattering of unstable particles quantized in a finite volume with the aim of extracting physical observables for infinite volume from lattice data. We illustrate the method with the $πρ$ scattering which generates dynamically the axial-vector $a_1(1260)$ resonance. Energy levels in a finite box are evaluated both considering the $ρ$ as a stable and unstable resonance and we find significant differences between both cases. We discuss how to solve the problem to get the physical scattering amplitudes in the infinite volume, and hence phase shifts, from possible …
