Despite the initial belief that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are driven by shapes to perform visual recognition tasks, recent evidence suggests that texture bias in CNNs provides higher performing models when learning on large labeled training datasets. This contrasts with the perceptual bias in the human visual cortex, which has a stronger preference towards shape components. Perceptual differences may explain why CNNs achieve human-level performance when large labeled datasets are available, but their performance significantly degrades in lowlabeled data scenarios, such as few-shot semantic segmentation. To remove the texture bias in the context of few-shot learning, we propose a novel architecture that integrates a set of Difference of Gaussians (DoG) to attenuate high-frequency local components in the feature space. This produces a set of modified feature maps, whose high-frequency components are diminished at different standard deviation values of the Gaussian distribution in the spatial domain. As this results in multiple feature maps for a single image, we employ a bi-directional convolutional long-short-term-memory to efficiently merge the multi scale-space representations. We perform extensive experiments on three well-known few-shot segmentation benchmarks -- Pascal i5, COCO-20i and FSS-1000 -- and demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in two datasets under the same conditions. The existing satellite-based forest monitoring system utilizes supervised learning approaches that are limited to a particular region and depend on manually annotated data to identify forest. This work envisages forest identification as a few-shot semantic segmentation task to achieve generalization across different geographical regions. The proposed few-shot segmentation approach incorporates a texture attention module in the prototypical network to highli…
Deep learning has established many new state of the art solutions in the last decade in areas such as object, scene and speech recognition. In particular Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a category of deep learning which obtains excellent results in object detection and recognition tasks. Its architecture is indeed well suited to object analysis by learning and classifying complex (deep) features that represent parts of an object or the object itself. However, some of its features are very similar to texture analysis methods. CNN layers can be thought of as filter banks of complexity incr…

Textures and edges contribute different information to image recognition. Edges and boundaries encode shape information, while textures manifest the appearance of regions. Despite the success of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in computer vision and medical image analysis applications, predominantly only texture abstractions are learned, which often leads to imprecise boundary delineations. In medical imaging, expert manual segmentation often relies on organ boundaries; for example, to manually segment a liver, a medical practitioner usually identifies edges first and subsequently fills i…
Few-shot object detection, which aims at detecting novel objects rapidly from extremely few annotated examples of previously unseen classes, has attracted significant research interest in the community. Most existing approaches employ the Faster R-CNN as basic detection framework, yet, due to the lack of tailored considerations for data-scarce scenario, their performance is often not satisfactory. In this paper, we look closely into the conventional Faster R-CNN and analyze its contradictions from two orthogonal perspectives, namely multi-stage (RPN vs. RCNN) and multi-task (classification vs.…

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are commonly thought to recognise objects by learning increasingly complex representations of object shapes. Some recent studies suggest a more important role of image textures. We here put these conflicting hypotheses to a quantitative test by evaluating CNNs and human observers on images with a texture-shape cue conflict. We show that ImageNet-trained CNNs are strongly biased towards recognising textures rather than shapes, which is in stark contrast to human behavioural evidence and reveals fundamentally different classification strategies. We then demon…

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), architectures consisting of convolutional layers, have been the standard choice in vision tasks. Recent studies have shown that Vision Transformers (VTs), architectures based on self-attention modules, achieve comparable performance in challenging tasks such as object detection and semantic segmentation. However, the image processing mechanism of VTs is different from that of conventional CNNs. This poses several questions about their generalizability, robustness, reliability, and texture bias when used to extract features for complex tasks. To address the…
Recently few-shot object detection is widely adopted to deal with data-limited situations. While most previous works merely focus on the performance on few-shot categories, we claim that detecting all classes is crucial as test samples may contain any instances in realistic applications, which requires the few-shot detector to learn new concepts without forgetting. Through analysis on transfer learning based methods, some neglected but beneficial properties are utilized to design a simple yet effective few-shot detector, Retentive R-CNN. It consists of Bias-Balanced RPN to debias the pretraine…
Existing semantic segmentation works mainly focus on learning the contextual information in high-level semantic features with CNNs. In order to maintain a precise boundary, low-level texture features are directly skip-connected into the deeper layers. Nevertheless, texture features are not only about local structure, but also include global statistical knowledge of the input image. In this paper, we fully take advantages of the low-level texture features and propose a novel Statistical Texture Learning Network (STLNet) for semantic segmentation. For the first time, STLNet analyzes the distribu…

We demonstrate empirical results on MS Coco highlighting challenges of the one-shot setting: while transferring knowledge about instance segmentation to novel object c…
Few-shot object detection (FSOD) aims to detect objects using only a few examples. How to adapt state-of-the-art object detectors to the few-shot domain remains challenging. Object proposal is a key ingredient in modern object detectors. However, the quality of proposals generated for few-shot classes using existing methods is far worse than that of many-shot classes, e.g., missing boxes for few-shot classes due to misclassification or inaccurate spatial locations with respect to true objects. To address the noisy proposal problem, we propose a novel meta-learning based FSOD model by jointly o…
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for visual tasks are believed to learn both the low-level textures and high-level object attributes, throughout the network depth. This paper further investigates the `texture bias' in CNNs. To this end, we regenerate multiple instances of training examples from each original image, through a process we call `repainting'. The repainted examples preserve the shape and structure of the regions and objects within the scenes, but diversify their texture and color. Our method can regenerate a same image at different daylight, season, or weather conditions, can h…

Deep neural networks have been successfully applied to problems such as image segmentation, image super-resolution, coloration and image inpainting. In this work we propose the use of convolutional neural networks (CNN) for image inpainting of large regions in high-resolution textures. Due to limited computational resources processing high-resolution images with neural networks is still an open problem. Existing methods separate inpainting of global structure and the transfer of details, which leads to blurry results and loss of global coherence in the detail transfer step. Based on advances i…
Convolutional neural network (CNN)-based image denoising methods typically estimate the noise component contained in a noisy input image and restore a clean image by subtracting the estimated noise from the input. However, previous denoising methods tend to remove high-frequency information (e.g., textures) from the input. It caused by intermediate feature maps of CNN contains texture information. A straightforward approach to this problem is stacking numerous layers, which leads to a high computational cost. To achieve high performance and computational efficiency, we propose a gated texture …
Gatys et al. (2015) showed that pair-wise products of features in a convolutional network are a very effective representation of image textures. We propose a simple modification to that representation which makes it possible to incorporate long-range structure into image generation, and to render images that satisfy various symmetry constraints. We show how this can greatly improve rendering of regular textures and of images that contain other kinds of symmetric structure. We also present applications to inpainting and season transfer.

Contrasting the previous evidence that neurons in the later layers of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) respond to complex object shapes, recent studies have shown that CNNs actually exhibit a `texture bias': given an image with both texture and shape cues (e.g., a stylized image), a CNN is biased towards predicting the category corresponding to the texture. However, these previous studies conduct experiments on the final classification output of the network, and fail to robustly evaluate the bias contained (i) in the latent representations, and (ii) on a per-pixel level. In this paper, we …

Although most fingerprint matching methods utilize minutia points and/or texture of fingerprint images as fingerprint features, the frequency spectrum is also a useful feature since a fingerprint is composed of ridge patterns with its inherent frequency band. We propose a novel CNN-based method for extracting fingerprint features from texture, minutiae, and frequency spectrum. In order to extract effective texture features from local regions around the minutiae, the minutia attention module is introduced to the proposed method. We also propose new data augmentation methods, which takes into ac…
This paper presents a significant improvement for the synthesis of texture images using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), making use of constraints on the Fourier spectrum of the results. More precisely, the texture synthesis is regarded as a constrained optimization problem, with constraints conditioning both the Fourier spectrum and statistical features learned by CNNs. In contrast with existing methods, the presented method inherits from previous CNN approaches the ability to depict local structures and fine scale details, and at the same time yields coherent large scale structures, eve…

We introduce one-shot texture segmentation: the task of segmenting an input image containing multiple textures given a patch of a reference texture. This task is designed to turn the problem of texture-based perceptual grouping into an objective benchmark. We show that it is straight-forward to generate large synthetic data sets for this task from a relatively small number of natural textures. In particular, this task can be cast as a self-supervised problem thereby alleviating the need for massive amounts of manually annotated data necessary for traditional segmentation tasks. Deep encoder-decoder based CNNs have advanced image inpainting methods for hole filling. While existing methods recover structures and textures step-by-step in the hole regions, they typically use two encoder-decoders for separate recovery. The CNN features of each encoder are learned to capture either missing structures or textures without considering them as a whole. The insufficient utilization of these encoder features limit the performance of recovering both structures and textures. In this paper, we propose a mutual encoder-decoder CNN for joint recovery of both. We use CNN features from…

Locally Rotation Invariant (LRI) operators have shown great potential in biomedical texture analysis where patterns appear at random positions and orientations. LRI operators can be obtained by computing the responses to the discrete rotation of local descriptors, such as Local Binary Patterns (LBP) or the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT). Other strategies achieve this invariance using Laplacian of Gaussian or steerable wavelets for instance, preventing the introduction of sampling errors during the discretization of the rotations. In this work, we obtain LRI operators via the local pr…

Texture classification is an important and challenging problem in many image processing applications. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) achieved significant successes for image classification, texture classification remains a difficult problem since textures usually do not contain enough information regarding the shape of object. In image processing, texture classification has been traditionally studied well with spectral analyses which exploit repeated structures in many textures. Since CNNs process images as-is in the spatial domain whereas spectral analyses process images in the fr…

We argue that robust dense SLAM systems can make valuable use of the layers of features coming from a standard CNN as a pyramid of `semantic texture' which is suitable for dense alignment while being much more robust to nuisance factors such as lighting than raw RGB values. We use a straightforward Lucas-Kanade formulation of image alignment, with a schedule of iterations over the coarse-to-fine levels of a pyramid, and simply replace the usual image pyramid by the hierarchy of convolutional feature maps from a pre-trained CNN. The resulting dense alignment performance is much more robust to l…
