We present an exact mapping between the staggered six-vertex model and an integrable model constructed from the twisted affine $D_2^2$ Lie algebra. Using the known relations between the staggered six-vertex model and the antiferromagnetic Potts model, this mapping allows us to study the latter model using tools from integrability. We show that there is a simple interpretation of one of the known K-matrices of the $D_2^2$ model in terms of Temperley-Lieb algebra generators, and use this to present an integrable Hamiltonian that turns out to be in the same universality class as the antiferromagnetic Potts model with free boundary conditions. The intriguing degeneracies in the spectrum observed in related works (arXiv:nlin/0002050 and arXiv:1707.09260) are discussed.
We review the exact results on the various critical regimes of the antiferromagnetic $Q$-state Potts model. We focus on the Bethe Ansatz approach for generic $Q$, and describe in each case the effective degrees of freedom appearing in the continuum limit.
We study the antiferromagnetic Potts model on the Poissonian Erdös-Rényi random graph. By identifying a suitable interpolation structure and an extended variational principle, together with a positive temperature second-moment analysis we prove the existence of a phase transition at a positive critical temperature. Upper and lower bounds on the temperature critical value are obtained from the stability analysis of the replica symmetric solution (recovered in the framework of Derrida-Ruelle probability cascades)and from a positive entropy argument.
At roots of unity the $N$-state integrable chiral Potts model and the six-vertex model descend from each other with the $τ_2$ model as the intermediate. We shall discuss how different gauge choices in the six-vertex model lead to two different quantum group constructions with different $q$-Pochhammer symbols, one construction only working well for $N$ odd, the other equally well for all $N$. We also address the generalization based on the sl$(m,n)$ vertex model.
We show how $Z$-invariance in the chiral Potts model provides a strategy to calculate the pair correlation in the general integrable chiral Potts model using only the superintegrable eigenvectors. When the distance between the two spins in the correlation function becomes infinite it becomes the square of the order parameter. In this way, we show that the spontaneous magnetization can be expressed in terms of the inner products of the eigenvectors of the $N$ asymptotically degenerate maximum eigenvalues. Using our previous results on these eigenvectors, we are able to obtain the order paramete…
We discuss the q-state Potts models for q<=4, in the scaling regimes close to their critical or tricritical points. Starting from the kink S-matrix elements proposed by Chim and Zamolodchikov, the bootstrap is closed for the scaling regions of all critical points, and for the tricritical points when 4>q>=2. We also note a curious appearance of the extended last line of Freudenthal's magic square in connection with the Potts models.
We give a general condition for a discrete spin system with nearest-neighbor interactions on the $\mathbb{Z}^d$ lattice to exhibit long-range order. The condition is applicable to systems with residual entropy in which the long-range order is entropically driven. As a main example we consider the antiferromagnetic $q$-state Potts model and rigorously prove the existence of a broken sub-lattice symmetry phase at low temperature and high dimension -- a new result for $q\ge 4$. As further examples, we prove the existence of an ordered phase in a clock model with hard constraints and extend the kn…
We present a proof of the power law decay of magnetic moment for the $q$-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the regular tree at the critical temperature, and also justify that the exact exponent is $\frac{1}{2}$. Our proof relies on the assumption of the uniqueness at the critical temperature, which has been established for $q=3,4$, and for $q \ge 5$ with large degree. An iterative contraction inequality is developed for independent interests.
We prove the existence of long-range order for the 3-state Potts antiferromagnet at low temperature on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for sufficiently large $d$. In particular, we show the existence of six extremal and ergodic infinite-volume Gibbs measures, which exhibit spontaneous magnetization in the sense that vertices in one bipartition class have a much higher probability to be in one state than in either of the other two states. This settles the high-dimensional case of the Kotecký conjecture.
In the first part of this paper I shall discuss the round-about way of how the integrable chiral Potts model was discovered about 30 years ago. As there should be more higher-genus models to be discovered, this might be of interest. In the second part I shall discuss some quantum group aspects, especially issues of odd versus even $N$ related to the Serre relations conjecture in our quantum loop subalgebra paper of 5 years ago and how we can make good use of coproducts, also borrowing ideas of Drinfeld, Jimbo, Deguchi, Fabricius, McCoy and Nishino.
I review recent results and unsolved problems concerning the hard-core lattice gas and the q-coloring model (antiferromagnetic Potts model at zero temperature). For each model, I consider its equilibrium properties (uniqueness/nonuniqueness of the infinite-volume Gibbs measure, complex zeros of the partition function) and the dynamics of local and nonlocal Monte Carlo algorithms (ergodicity, rapid mixing, mixing at complex fugacity). These problems touch on mathematical physics, probability, combinatorics and theoretical computer science.
We initiate a study of the boundary version of the square-lattice $Q$-state Potts antiferromagnet, with $Q \in [0,4]$ real, motivated by the fact that the continuum limit of the corresponding bulk model is a non-compact CFT, closely related with the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k/U(1)$ Euclidian black-hole coset model. While various types of conformal boundary conditions (discrete and continuous branes) have been formally identified for the the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k/U(1)$ coset CFT, we are only able in this work to identify conformal boundary conditions (CBC) leading to a discrete boundary spectrum. The co…
In this paper we discuss the integrable chiral Potts model, as it clearly relates to how we got befriended with Vaughan Jones, whose birthday we celebrated at the Qinhuangdao meeting. Remarkably we can also celebrate the birthday of the model, as it has been introduced about 30 years ago as the first solution of the star-triangle equations parametrized in terms of higher genus functions. After introducing the most general checkerboard Yang--Baxter equation, we specialize to the star-triangle equation, also discussing its relation with knot theory. Then we show how the integrable chiral Potts m…
We prove the existence of long-range order at sufficiently low temperatures, including zero temperature, for the three-state Potts antiferromagnet on a class of quasi-transitive plane quadrangulations, including the diced lattice. More precisely, we show the existence of (at least) three infinite-volume Gibbs measures, which exhibit spontaneous magnetization in the sense that vertices in one sublattice have a higher probability to be in one state than in either of the other two states. For the special case of the diced lattice, we give a good rigorous lower bound on this probability, based on …
We study, using transfer-matrix methods, the partition-function zeros of the square-lattice q-state Potts antiferromagnet at zero temperature (= square-lattice chromatic polynomial) for the special boundary conditions that are obtained from an m x n grid with free boundary conditions by adjoining one new vertex adjacent to all the sites in the leftmost column and a second new vertex adjacent to all the sites in the rightmost column. We provide numerical evidence that the partition-function zeros are becoming dense everywhere in the complex q-plane outside the limiting curve B_\infty(sq) for th…
We continue our discussion of the q-state Potts models for q <= 4, in the scaling regimes close to their critical and tricritical points. In a previous paper, the spectrum and full S-matrix of the models on an infinite line were elucidated; here, we consider finite-size behaviour. TBA equations are proposed for all cases related to phi(21) and phi(12) perturbations of unitary minimal models. These are subjected to a variety of checks in the ultraviolet and infrared limits, and compared with results from a recently-proposed nonlinear integral equation. A nonlinear integral equation is also used…
We study the chromatic polynomials (= zero-temperature antiferromagnetic Potts-model partition functions) P_G(q) for m \times n rectangular subsets of the square lattice, with m \le 8 (free or periodic transverse boundary conditions) and n arbitrary (free longitudinal boundary conditions), using a transfer matrix in the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation. In particular, we extract the limiting curves of partition-function zeros when n \to\infty, which arise from the crossing in modulus of dominant eigenvalues (Beraha-Kahane-Weiss theorem). We also provide evidence that the Beraha numbers B_2,B_3…
We study the chromatic polynomial P_G(q) for m \times n triangular-lattice strips of widths m <= 12_P, 9_F (with periodic or free transverse boundary conditions, respectively) and arbitrary lengths n (with free longitudinal boundary conditions). The chromatic polynomial gives the zero-temperature limit of the partition function for the q-state Potts antiferromagnet. We compute the transfer matrix for such strips in the Fortuin--Kasteleyn representation and obtain the corresponding accumulation sets of chromatic zeros in the complex q-plane in the limit n\to\infty. We recompute the limiting cur…
The discrete quantum Sine-Gordon model at roots of unity remarkably combines a classical integrable system with an integrable quantum spin system, whose parameters obey classical equations of motion. We show that the fundamental R-matrix of the model (which satisfies a difference property Yang-Baxter equation) naturally splits into a product of a singular "classical" part and a finite dimensional quantum part. The classical part of the $R$-matrix itself satisfies the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, and therefore can be factored out producing, however, a certain "twist" of the quantum part. We sh…
In this paper, we study the surface energy of the one-dimensional supersymmetric $t-J$ model with unparallel boundary magnetic fields, which is a typical $U(1)$-symmetry broken quantum integrable strongly correlated electron system. It is shown that at the ground state, the contribution of inhomogeneous term in the Bethe ansatz solution of eigenvalues of transfer matrix satisfies the finite size scaling law $L^β$ where $β<0$. Based on it, the physical quantities of the system in the thermodynamic limit are calculated. We obtain the patterns of Bethe roots and the analytical expressions of dens…
We study birational transformations of the projective space originating from lattice statistical mechanics, specifically from various chiral Potts models. Associating these models to \emph{stable patterns} and \emph{signed-patterns}, we give general results which allow us to find \emph{all} chiral $q$-state spin-edge Potts models when the number of states $q$ is a prime or the square of a prime, as well as several $q$-dependent family of models. We also prove the absence of monocolor stable signed-pattern with more than four states. This demonstrates a conjecture about cyclic Hadamard matrices…
Dynamics of a quantum system can be described by coupled Heisenberg equations. In a generic many-body system these equations form an exponentially large hierarchy that is intractable without approximations. In contrast, in an integrable system a small subset of operators can be closed with respect to commutation with the Hamiltonian. As a result, the Heisenberg equations for these operators can form a smaller closed system amenable to an analytical treatment. We demonstrate that this indeed happens in a class of integrable models where the Hamiltonian is an element of the Onsager algebra. We e…
We obtain long series expansions for the bulk, surface and corner free energies for several two-dimensional statistical models, by combining Enting's finite lattice method (FLM) with exact transfer matrix enumerations. The models encompass all integrable curves of the Q-state Potts model on the square and triangular lattices, including the antiferromagnetic transition curves and the Ising model (Q=2) at temperature T, as well as a fully-packed O(n) type loop model on the square lattice. The expansions are around the trivial fixed points at infinite Q, n or 1/T. By using a carefully chosen expa…
