In this paper we discuss the integrable chiral Potts model, as it clearly relates to how we got befriended with Vaughan Jones, whose birthday we celebrated at the Qinhuangdao meeting. Remarkably we can also celebrate the birthday of the model, as it has been introduced about 30 years ago as the first solution of the star-triangle equations parametrized in terms of higher genus functions. After introducing the most general checkerboard Yang--Baxter equation, we specialize to the star-triangle equation, also discussing its relation with knot theory. Then we show how the integrable chiral Potts model leads to special identities for basic hypergeometric series in the $q$ a root-of-unity limit. Many of the well-known summation formulae for basic hypergeometric series do not work in this case. However, if we require the summand to be periodic, then there are many summable series. For example, the integrability condition, namely, the star-triangle equation, is a summation formula for a well-balanced ${}_4Φ_3$ series. We finish with a few remarks about the relation with quantum groups at roots of unity.
At roots of unity the $N$-state integrable chiral Potts model and the six-vertex model descend from each other with the $τ_2$ model as the intermediate. We shall discuss how different gauge choices in the six-vertex model lead to two different quantum group constructions with different $q$-Pochhammer symbols, one construction only working well for $N$ odd, the other equally well for all $N$. We also address the generalization based on the sl$(m,n)$ vertex model.
After briefly reviewing selected Ising and chiral Potts model results, we discuss a number of properties of cyclic hypergeometric functions which appear naturally in the description of the integrable chiral Potts model and its three-dimensional generalizations.
We examine the Onsager algebra symmetry of $τ^{(j)}$-matrices in the superintegrable chiral Potts model. The comparison of Onsager algebra symmetry of the chiral Potts model with the $sl_2$-loop algebra symmetry of six-vertex model at roots of unity is made from the aspect of functional relations using the $Q$-operator and fusion matrices. The discussion of Bethe ansatz for both models is conducted in a uniform manner through the evaluation parameters of their symmetry algebras.
We briefly discuss the transcendental constants generated through the epsilon-expansion of generalized hypergeometric functions and their interrelation with the "sixth root of unity."
The discrete quantum Sine-Gordon model at roots of unity remarkably combines a classical integrable system with an integrable quantum spin system, whose parameters obey classical equations of motion. We show that the fundamental R-matrix of the model (which satisfies a difference property Yang-Baxter equation) naturally splits into a product of a singular "classical" part and a finite dimensional quantum part. The classical part of the $R$-matrix itself satisfies the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, and therefore can be factored out producing, however, a certain "twist" of the quantum part. We sh…
We show that the integral $J(t) = (1/π^3) \int_0^π\int_0^π\int_0^πdx dy dz \log(t - \cos{x} - \cos{y} - \cos{z} + \cos{x}\cos{y}\cos{z})$, can be expressed in terms of ${_5F_4}$ hypergeometric functions. The integral arises in the solution by Baxter and Bazhanov of the free-energy of the $sl(n)$ Potts model, which includes the term $J(2)$. Our result immediately gives the logarithmic Mahler measure of the Laurent polynomial $k - (x+1/x) - (y+1/y) - (z+1/z) + 1/4(x+1/x) (y+1/y) (z+1/z)$ in terms of the same hypergeometric functions.
We demonstrate that the transfer matrix of the inhomogeneous $N$-state chiral Potts model with two vertical superintegrable rapidities serves as the $Q$-operator of XXZ chain model for a cyclic representation of $U_{\sf q}(sl_2)$ with $N$th root-of-unity ${\sf q}$ and representation-parameter for odd $N$. The symmetry problem of XXZ chain with a general cyclic $U_{\sf q}(sl_2)$-representation is mapped onto the problem of studying $Q$-operator of some special one-parameter family of generalized $τ^{(2)}$-models. In particular, the spin-$\frac{N-1}{2}$ XXZ chain model with ${\sf q}^N=1$ and the…
We construct the fusion operators in the generalized $τ^{(2)}$-model using the fused $L$-operators, and verify the fusion relations with the truncation identity. The algebraic Bethe ansatz discussion is conducted on two special classes of $τ^{(2)}$ which include the superintegrable chiral Potts model. We then perform the parallel discussion on the XXZ spin chain at roots of unity, and demonstrate that the $sl_2$-loop-algebra symmetry exists for the root-of-unity XXZ spin chain with a higher spin, where the evaluation parameters for the symmetry algebra are identified by the explicit Fabricius-…
We prove the following theorems: 1) The Laurent expansions in epsilon of the Gauss hypergeometric functions 2F1(I_1+a*epsilon, I_2+b*epsilon; I_3+p/q + c epsilon; z), 2F1(I_1+p/q+a*epsilon, I_2+p/q+b*epsilon; I_3+ p/q+c*epsilon;z), 2F1(I_1+p/q+a*epsilon, I_2+b*epsilon; I_3+p/q+c*epsilon;z), where I_1,I_2,I_3,p,q are arbitrary integers, a,b,c are arbitrary numbers and epsilon is an infinitesimal parameter, are expressible in terms of multiple polylogarithms of q-roots of unity with coefficients that are ratios of polynomials; 2) The Laurent expansion of the Gauss hypergeometric function 2F1(I_1…
We identify the quantum group ${\Large\textsl{U}}_\textsl{w}(sl_2)$ in the $L$-operator of $τ^{(2)}$-model for a generic $\textsl{w}$ as a subalgebra of $U_{\sf q} (sl_2)$ with $\textsl{w} = {\sf q}^{-2}$. In the roots of unity case, ${\sf q}=q, \textsl{w} = ω$ with $q^{\bf n} = ω^N = 1$, the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of XXZ-model with the $U_q (sl_2)$-cyclic representation are determined by the $τ^{(2)}$-model with the induced ${\Large\textsl{U}}_ω(sl_2)$-cyclic representation, which is decomposed as a finite sum of $τ^{(2)}$-models in non-superintegrable inhomogeneous $N$-state chiral Pot…
We construct the explicit $Q$-operator incorporated with the $sl_2$-loop-algebra symmetry of the six-vertex model at roots of unity. The functional relations involving the $Q$-operator, the six-vertex transfer matrix and fusion matrices are derived from the Bethe equation, parallel to the Onsager-algebra-symmetry discussion in the superintegrable $N$-state chiral Potts model. We show that the whole set of functional equations is valid for the $Q$-operator. Direct calculations in certain cases are also given here for clearer illustration about the nature of the $Q$-operator in the symmetry stud…
Following Baxter's method of producing Q_{72}-operator, we construct the Q-operator of the root-of-unity eight-vertex model for the crossing parameter $η= \frac{2m K}{N}$ with odd $N$ where Q_{72} does not exist. We use this new Q-operator to study the functional relations in the Fabricius-McCoy comparison between the root-of-unity eight-vertex model and the superintegrable N-state chiral Potts model. By the compatibility of the constructed Q-operator with the structure of Baxter's eight-vertex (solid-on-solid) SOS model, we verify the set of functional relations of the root-of-unity eight-ver…
Recently we showed how non-homogeneous second-order difference equations appearing within ABJM quantum spectral curve description could be solved using Mellin space technique. In particular we provided explicit results for anomalous dimensions of twist 1 operators in sl(2) sector at arbitrary spin values up to four loop order. It was shown that the obtained results may be expressed in terms of harmonic sums decorated by fourth root of unity factors, so that maximum transcendentality principle holds. In this note we show that the same result could be also obtained by direct solution of the ment…
We obtain a new solution of the star-triangle relation with positive Boltzmann weights which contains as special cases all continuous and discrete spin solutions of this relation, that were previously known. This new master solution defines an exactly solvable 2D lattice model of statistical mechanics, which involves continuous spin variables, living on a circle, and contains two temperature-like parameters. If one of the these parameters approaches a root of unity (corresponds to zero temperature), the spin variables freezes into discrete positions, equidistantly spaced on the circle. An abso…
In Ramanujan's final letter to Hardy, he listed examples of a strange new class of infinite series he called "mock theta functions". It turns out all of these examples are essentially specializations of a so-called universal mock theta function $g_3(z,q)$ of Gordon-McIntosh. Here we show that $g_3$ arises naturally from the reciprocal of the classical Jacobi triple product -- and is intimately tied to rank generating functions for unimodal sequences, which are connected to mock modular and quantum modular forms -- under the action of an operator related to statistical physics and partition the…
