In the present paper, we study a purely inseparable counterpart of Abhyankar's conjecture for the affine line in positive characteristic, and prove its validity for all the finite local non-abelian simple group schemes in characteristic $p>5$. The crucial point is how to deal with finite local group schemes which cannot be realized as the Frobenius kernel of a smooth algebraic group. Such group schemes appear as the ones associated with Cartan type Lie algebras. We settle the problem for such Lie algebras by making use of natural gradations or filtrations on them.
In this paper, we survey the major contributions of Abhyankar to the development of the theory of fundamental groups and Galois covers in positive characteristic. We first discuss the current status of four conjectures of Abhyankar about Galois covers in positive characteristic. Then we discuss research directions inspired by Abhyankar's work, including many open problems.
This paper verifies Abhyankar's Inertia Conjecture for certain sporadic groups $G$ in particular characteristics by showing that all possible inertia groups occur for $G$-Galois covers of the affine line. For a larger set of sporadic groups, all but finitely many possible ramification invariants are shown to occur. In particular, we prove that all but eight of the possible ramification invariants are realizable for $\text{M}_{11}$-Galois covers of the affine line.
Let $U$ be an affine smooth curve defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. The Abhyankar Conjecture (proved by Raynaud and Harbater in 1994) describes the set of finite quotients of Grothendieck's étale fundamental group of $U$. In this paper, we consider a purely inseparable analogue of this problem, formulated in terms of Nori's profinite fundamental group scheme, and give a partial answer to it.
André recently gave a beautiful proof of Hochster's direct summand conjecture in commutative algebra using perfectoid spaces; his two main results are a generalization of the almost purity theorem (the perfectoid Abhyankar lemma) and a construction of certain faithfully flat extensions of perfectoid algebras where "discriminants" acquire all $p$-power roots. In this paper, we explain a quicker proof of Hochster's conjecture that circumvents the perfectoid Abhyankar lemma; instead, we prove and use a quantitative form of Scholze's Hebbarkeitssatz (the Riemann extension theorem) for perfectoid s…
Let $(P, Q)$ be a pair of Jacobian polynomials. We can show that $ <P, Q>+l+2g(P)-2= 0= <P, [P,Q]>$, where $<f, g>$ is the intersection number of $f, g\in \CC[x, y]$ in the affine plane, $l$ is the number of branch at point at infinity and $g(P)$ is the geometric genus of affine curve defined by $P$. Hence we can show that every Jacobian polynomial defines a smooth rational curve with one point at infinity. It is sufficient to fix the Jacobian conjecture in two dimension by the Abhyankar theorem or the Abhyankar-Moh-Suzuki theorem.
In his previous paper, the author proposed as a problem a purely inseparable analogue of the Abhyankar conjecture for affine curves in positive characteristic and gave a partial answer to it, which includes a complete answer for finite local nilpotent group schemes. In the present paper, motivated by the Abhyankar conjectures with restricted ramifications due to Harbater and Pop, we study a refined version of the analogous problem, based on a recent work on tamely ramified torsors due to Biswas-Borne, which is formulated in terms of root stacks. We study an embedding problem to conclude that t…
Building on his reduction to the case of an unramified complete regular local ring R of mixed characteristic, we propose a proof in the framework of P. Scholze's perfectoid theory. The main ingredients are the perfectoid "Abhyankar lemma" and an analysis of Kummer extensions of R by a thickening technique.
We obtain new evidence for the Purely Wild Inertia Conjecture posed by Abhyankar and for its generalization. We show that this generalized conjecture is true for any product of simple Alternating groups in odd characteristics, and for any product of certain Symmetric or Alternating groups in characteristic two. We also obtain important results towards the realization of the inertia groups which can be applied to more general set up. We further show that the Purely Wild Inertia Conjecture is true for any product of perfect quasi $p$-groups (groups generated by their Sylow $p$-subgroups) if the …
The wild part of Abhyankar's Inertia Conjecture for a product of certain Alternating groups is shown for any algebraically closed field of odd characteristic. For $d$ a multiple of the characteristic of the base field, a new étale $A_d$-cover of the affine line is obtained using an explicit equation and it is shown that it has the minimal possible upper jump.
In this paper we introduce the local Nori fundamental group scheme of a reduced scheme or algebraic stack over a perfect field $k$. We give particular attention to the case of fields: to any field extension $K/k$ we attach a pro-local group scheme over $k$. We show how this group has many analogies, but also some crucial differences, with the absolute Galois group. We propose two conjectures, analogous to the classical Neukirch-Uchida Theorem and Abhyankar Conjecture, providing some evidence in their favor. Finally we show that the local fundamental group of a normal variety is a quotient of t…
Stratifications and iterative differential equations are analogues in positive characteristic of complex linear differential equations. There are few explicit examples of stratifications. The main goal of this paper is to construct stratifications on projective or affine curves in positive characteristic and to determine the possibilities for their differential Galois groups. For the related "differential Abhyankar conjecture" we present partial answers, supplementing the literature. The tools for the construction of regular singular stratifications and the study of their differential Galois g…
Consider the neutral Tannakian category mixed Tate motives over Z, in this paper we suggest a way to understand the structure of depth-graded motivic Lie subalgebra generated by the depth one part. We will show that from an isomorphism conjecture proposed by K. Tasaka we can deduce the F. Brown matrix conjecture and the non-degenerated conjecture about depth-graded motivic Lie subalgebra generated by the depth one part.
We deduce the Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture on the multiplicities of simple modules over a simple complex Lie algebra in Verma modules in category O from the equivariant geometric Satake correspondence and the analysis of torus fixed points in zastava spaces. We make similar speculations for the affine Lie algebras and W-algebras.
In a recent preprint, Y. Namikawa proposed a conjecture on Q-factorial terminalizations and their birational geometry of nilpotent orbits. He proved his conjecture for classical simple Lie algebras. In this note, we prove his conjecture for exceptional simple Lie algebras. For the birational geometry, contrary to the classical case, two new types of Mukai flops appear.
