The soft and hard edge scaling limits of $β$-ensembles can be characterized as the spectra of certain random Sturm-Liouville operators. It has been shown that by tuning the parameter of the hard edge process one can obtain the soft edge process as a scaling limit. We prove that this limit can be realized on the level of the corresponding random operators. More precisely, the random operators can be coupled in a way so that the scaled versions of the hard edge operators converge to the soft edge operator a.s. in the norm resolvent sense.
We investigate how the theory of quasipolynomials due to Hedenmalm and Wennman works in a hard edge setting and obtain as a consequence a scaling limit for radially symmetric potentials.
Very recently, we have shown how the harmonic analysis approach can be modified to deal with products of general Hermitian and complex random matrices at finite matrix dimension. In the present work, we consider the particular product of a multiplicative Pólya ensemble on the complex square matrices and a Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) shifted by a constant multiplicative of the identity. The shift shall show that the limiting hard edge statistics of the product matrix is weakly dependent on the local spectral statistics of the GUE, but depends more on the global statistics via its Stieltjes …
Consider an $N$ by $N$ matrix $X$ of complex entries with iid real and imaginary parts. We show that the local density of eigenvalues of $X^*X$ converges to the Marchenko-Pastur law on the optimal scale with probability $1$. We also obtain rigidity of the eigenvalues in the bulk and near both hard and soft edges. Here we avoid logarithmic and polynomial corrections by working directly with high powers of expectation of the Stieltjes transforms. We work under the assumption that the entries have a finite 4th moment and are truncated at $N^{1/4}$. In this work we simplify and adapt the methods f…
We prove tightness and limiting Brownian-Gibbs description for line ensembles of non-colliding Brownian bridges above a hard wall, which are subject to geometrically growing self-potentials of tilted area type. Statistical properties of the resulting ensemble are very different from that of non-colliding Brownian bridges without self-potentials. The model itself was introduced in order to mimic level lines of (2+1)-dimensional discrete Solid-On-Solid random interfaces above a hard wall.
We study probabilistic and combinatorial aspects of natural volume-and-trace weighted plane partitions and their continuous analogues. We prove asymptotic limit laws for the largest parts of these ensembles in terms of new and known hard- and soft-edge distributions of random matrix theory. As a corollary we obtain an asymptotic transition between Gumbel and Tracy--Widom GUE fluctuations for the largest part of such plane partitions, with the continuous Bessel kernel providing the interpolation. We interpret our results in terms of two natural models of directed last passage percolation (LPP):…
A fundamental question in random matrix theory is to quantify the optimal rate of convergence to universal laws. We take up this problem for the Laguerre $β$ ensemble, characterised by the Dyson parameter $β$, and the Laguerre weight $x^a e^{-βx/2}$, $x > 0$ in the hard edge limit. The latter relates to the eigenvalues in the vicinity of the origin in the scaled variable $x \mapsto x/4N$. Previous work has established the corresponding functional form of various statistical quantities --- for example the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue, provided that $a \in \mathbb Z_{\ge 0}$. We show,…
We study the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue for certain classes of positive-definite Hermitian random matrices, in the limit where the size of the matrices becomes large. Their limit distributions can be expressed as Fredholm determinants of integral operators associated to kernels built out of Meijer $G$-functions or Wright's generalized Bessel functions. They generalize in a natural way the hard edge Bessel kernel Fredholm determinant. We express the logarithmic derivatives of the Fredholm determinants identically in terms of a $2\times 2$ Riemann-Hilbert problem, and use this repre…
We obtain the recursive identities for the joint moments of the traces of the powers of the resolvent for Gaussian ensembles of random matrices at the soft and hard edges of the spectrum. We also discuss the possible ways to extend these results to the non-Gaussian case.
We study the eigenvalue correlations of random Hermitian $n\times n$ matrices of the form $S=M+εH$, where $H$ is a GUE matrix, $ε>0$, and $M$ is a positive-definite Hermitian random matrix, independent of $H$, whose eigenvalue density is a polynomial ensemble. We show that there is a soft-to-hard edge transition in the microscopic behaviour of the eigenvalues of $S$ close to $0$ if $ε$ tends to $0$ together with $n\to +\infty$ at a critical speed, depending on the random matrix $M$. In a double scaling limit, we obtain a new family of limiting eigenvalue correlation kernels. We apply our gener…
In a microcanonical ensemble (constant $NVE$, hard reflecting walls) and in a molecular dynamics ensemble (constant $NVE\mathbf{PG}$, periodic boundary conditions) with a number $N$ of smooth elastic hard spheres in a $d$-dimensional volume $V$ having a total energy $E$, a total momentum $\mathbf{P}$, and an overall center of mass position $\mathbf{G}$, the individual velocity components, velocity moduli, and energies have transformed beta distributions with different arguments and shape parameters depending on $d$, $N$, $E$, the boundary conditions, and possible symmetries in the initial cond…
Starting from the diffusion equation at beta random matrix hard edge obtained by Ramirez and Rider (2008), we study the question of its relation with Lax pairs for Painleve III. The results are in many respects similar to the ones found for soft edge by Bloemendal and Virag (2010). In particular, the values beta = 2 and 4 (but not beta = 1) allow for a simple connection with Painlevé III solutions and Lax pairs. However, there is an additional surprise for a special relation of parameters where a simple solution of the diffusion equation can be obtained, which is a one-parameter generalization…
We characterize the phenomenon of "crowding" near the largest eigenvalue $λ_{\max}$ of random $N \times N$ matrices belonging to the Gaussian $β$-ensemble of random matrix theory, including in particular the Gaussian orthogonal ($β=1$), unitary ($β=2$) and symplectic ($β= 4$) ensembles. We focus on two distinct quantities: (i) the density of states (DOS) near $λ_{\max}$, $ρ_{\rm DOS}(r,N)$, which is the average density of eigenvalues located at a distance $r$ from $λ_{\max}$ (or the density of eigenvalues seen from $λ_{\max}$) and (ii) the probability density function of the gap between the fi…
We investigate a random normal matrix model with eigenvalues forced to be in the droplet, the support of the equilibrium measure associated with an external field. For radially symmetric external fields, we show that the fluctuations of the spectral radius around a hard edge tend to follow an exponential distribution as the number of eigenvalues tends to infinity. As a corollary, we obtain the order statistics of the moduli of eigenvalues.
The local eigenvalue statistics of large random matrices near a hard edge transitioning into a soft edge are described by the Bessel process associated with a large parameter $α$. For this point process, we obtain 1) exponential moment asymptotics, up to and including the constant term, 2) asymptotics for the expectation and variance of the counting function, 3) several central limit theorems and 4) a global rigidity upper bound.
Bourgade, Nikeghbali and Rouault recently proposed a matrix model for the circular Jacobi $β$-ensemble, which is a generalization of the Dyson circular $β$-ensemble but equipped with an additional parameter $b$, and further studied its limiting spectral measure. We calculate the scaling limits for expected products of characteristic polynomials of circular Jacobi $β$-ensembles. For the fixed constant $b$, the resulting limit near the spectrum singularity is proven to be a new multivariate function. When $b=βNd/2$, the scaling limits in the bulk and at the soft edge agree with those of the Herm…
We study the scaling limit of the spectrum of the β-Jacobi ensemble at the soft-edge and hard-edge for general values of β. We show that the limiting point processes correspond respectively to the stochastic Airy and Bessel point processes introduced in Ramirez-Rider-Virag and Ramirez-Rider.
