We report the doping effects of cobalt on van der Waals (vdW) magnet Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$. A series of (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_5$GeTe$_2$ (0$\leq$x$\leq$0.44) single crystals have been successfully grown, their structural, magnetic and transport properties are investigated. For x=0.20, The Curie temperature $T_C$ increases from 276~K to 337~K. Moreover, the magnetic easy-axis is reoriented to the $ab$-plane from the $c$-axis in undoped Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$ with largely enhanced magnetic anisotropy. These magnetic properties would make (Fe$_{0.8}$Co$_{0.2}$)$_5$GeTe$_2$ more effective in stabilizing magnetic order in the two-dimensional limit. A complex magnetic phase diagram is identified on the higher doping side. The x=0.44 crystal first orders ferromagnetically at $T_C$=363~K then undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N$=335~K. Furthermore magnetic-field-induced spin-flop transitions are observed for the AFM ground state. Our work reveals (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_5$GeTe$_2$ as promising candidates for developing new spin-related applications and proposes a method to engineer the magnetic properties of vdW magnet.
We demonstrate that kinetics play an important role in the epitaxial growth of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT) van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic films by molecular beam epitaxy. By varying the deposition rate, we control the formation or suppression of an initial tellurium-deficient non-van der Waals phase (Fe$_3$Ge$_2$) prior to realizing epitaxial growth of the vdW FGT phase. Using cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, we optimize the FGT films to have atomically smooth surfaces and abrupt interfaces with the Ge(111) substrate. The magnetic propert…
Topologically protected magnetic structures provide a robust platform for low power consumption devices for computation and data storage. Examples of these structures are skyrmions, chiral domain walls, and spin spirals. Here we use scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis to unveil the presence of chiral counterclockwise Néel spin spirals at the surface of a bulk van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT), at zero magnetic field. These Néel spin spirals survive up to FGT's Curie temperature $T_\mathrm{C}= 220 \mathrm{~K}$, with little change in the periodicity $p=300 \mathr…
Thin van der Waals (vdW) layered magnetic materials disclose the possibility to realize vdW heterostructures with new functionalities. Here we report on the realization and investigation of tunneling spin valves based on van der Waals heterostructures consisting of an atomically thin hBN layer acting as tunnel barrier and two exfoliated Fe3GeTe2 crystals acting as ferromagnetic electrodes. Low-temperature anomalous Hall effect measurements show that thin Fe3GeTe2 crystals are metallic ferromagnets with an easy axis perpendicular to the layers, and a very sharp magnetization switching at magnet…
Magnetization relaxation in the two-dimensional itinerant ferromagnetic van der Waals material Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, below the Curie temperature, is fundamentally important for applications to low-dimensional spintronics devices. We use first-principles scattering theory to calculate the temperature-dependent Gilbert damping for bulk and single-layer Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. The calculated damping frequency of bulk Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ increases monotonically with temperature because of the dominance of resistivitylike behavior. By contrast, a very weak temperature dependence is found for the damping frequency of …
In the last decade, several works have focused on exploring the material and electrical properties of $\text{GeTe/Sb}_{2}\text{Te}_{3}$ superlattices (SLs) in particular because of some first device implementations demonstrating interesting performances such as fast switching speed, low energy consumption, and non-volatility. However, the switching mechanism in such SL-based devices remains under debate. In this work, we investigate the prototype $\text{GeTe/Sb}_{2}\text{Te}_{3}$ SLs, to analyze fundamentally their electronic and thermal properties by ab initio methods. We find that the resist…
The weak interlayer coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnets has confined their application to two dimensional (2D) spintronic devices. Here, we demonstrate that the interlayer coupling in a vdW magnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT) can be largely modulated by a protonic gate. With the increase of the protons intercalated among vdW layers, interlayer magnetic coupling increases.Because of the existence of antiferromagnetic layers in FGT nanoflakes, the increasing interlayer magnetic coupling induces exchange bias in protonated FGT nanoflakes. Most strikingly, a rarely seen zero-field cooled (ZFC) exchange …
Anomalous Nernst effect, a result of charge current driven by temperature gradient, provides a probe of the topological nature of materials due to its sensitivity to the Berry curvature near the Fermi level. Fe3GeTe2, one important member of the recently discovered two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials, offers a unique platform for anomalous Nernst effect because of its metallic and topological nature. Here, we report the observation of large anomalous Nernst effect in Fe3GeTe2. The anomalous Hall angle and anomalous Nernst angle are about 0.07 and 0.09 respectively, far larger than…
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral nanoscale spin textures which are usually induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Recently, magnetic skyrmions have been observed in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic materials, such as Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$. The electric control of skyrmions is important for their potential application in low-power memory technologies. Here, we predict that DMI and magnetic skyrmions in a Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ monolayer can be controlled by ferroelectric polarization of an adjacent 2D vdW ferroelectric In$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. Based on density functional theor…

Low crystal symmetry of magnetic van der Waals materials naturally promotes spin-orbital complexity unachievable in common magnetic materials used for spin-orbit torque switching. Here, using first-principles methods, we demonstrate that an interplay of spin and orbital degrees of freedom has a profound impact on spin-orbit torques in a prototype van der Waals ferromagnet: Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT). While we show that bulk FGT hosts strong "hidden" current-induced torques harvested by each of its layers, we uncover that their origin alternates between the conventional spin flux torque and the so-ca…

Femtosecond laser-pulse excitation provides an energy efficient and fast way to control magnetization at the nanoscale, providing great potential for ultrafast next-generation data manipulation and nonvolatile storage devices. Ferromagnetic van der Waals materials have garnered much attention over the past few years due to their low dimensionality, excellent magnetic properties, and large response to external stimuli. Nonetheless, their behaviour upon fs laser-pulse excitation remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the ultrafast magnetization dynamics of a thin flake of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2…
Magnetic skyrmions $-$ localized chiral spin structures $-$ show great promise for spintronic applications. The recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials opened new opportunities for exploring such topological spin structures in atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) materials. Despite recent progress in stabilizing metastable skyrmions in 2D magnets, their diameters are still beyond 100~nm and their lifetime, which is essential for applications, has not been explored yet. Here, using first-principles calculations and atomistic spin simulations, we predict that compressive mecha…
Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_2$ is a centrosymmetric, layered van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet that displays Curie temperatures $T_c$ (270-330 K) that are within the useful range for spintronic applications. However, little is known about the interplay between its topological spin textures (e.g., merons, skyrmions) with technologically relevant transport properties such as the topological Hall effect (THE), or topological thermal transport. Here, we show via high-resolution Lorentz transmission electron microscopy that merons and anti-meron pairs coexist with Néel skyrmions in Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_2$ over a wide…
Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ is a two-dimensional van der Waals material with a ferromagnetic ground state and a maximum transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}\sim225$ K. However, when Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ is synthesized lower values of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ are often reported. This is attributed to a deficiency in the Fe at the 2c site in the crystal structure. Here we investigate the effect of Fe deficiency and the substitution of Co for Fe on the magnetic properties of this system. We have synthesized both polycrystalline material and single crystals by chemical vapor transport and the flux method, with the…
Van der Waals material Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$, with its long-range ferromagnetic ordering near room temperature, has significant potential to become an enabling platform for implementing novel spintronic and quantum devices. To pave the way for applications, it is crucial to determine the magnetic properties when the thickness of Fe5GeTe2 reaches the few-layers regime. However, this is highly challenging due to the need for a characterization technique that is local, highly sensitive, artifact-free, and operational with minimal fabrication. Prior studies have indicated that Curie temperature TC can re…
Three-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT) is regarded as a candidate for the magnetic topological nodal line semimetal. We investigate lateral electron transport between two 3~$μ$m spaced superconducting In leads beneath a thick three-dimensional FGT exfoliated flake. At low 30~mK temperature, we observe Josephson supercurrent that exhibits unusual critical current $I_c$ suppression by the magnetic field $B$. The overall $I_c(B)$ pattern is asymmetric in respect to the B sign. We demonstrate, that the asymmetry is defined by the magnetic field sweep direction, so the $I_…

Van der Waals (vdW) magnets are appealing candidates for realising spintronic devices that exploit current control of magnetization (e.g. switching or domain wall motion), but so far experimental demonstrations have been sparse, in part because of challenges associated with imaging the magnetization in these systems. Widefield nitrogen-vacancy (NV) microscopy allows rapid, quantitative magnetic imaging across entire vdW flakes, ideal for capturing changes in the micromagnetic structure due to an electric current. Here we use a widefield NV microscope to study the effect of current injection in…

The extraordinary electronic and optical properties of the crystal-to-amorphous transition in phase-change materials led to important developments in memory applications. A promising outlook is offered by nanoscaling such phase-change structures. Following this research line, we study the interband optical transmission spectra of nanoscaled GeTe/Sb$_2$Te$_3$ chalcogenide superlattice films. We determine, for films with varying stacking sequence and growth methods, the density and scattering time of the free electrons, and the characteristics of the valence-to-conduction transition. It is found…
Current-induced control of magnetization in ferromagnets using spin-orbit torque (SOT) has drawn attention as a new mechanism for fast and energy efficient magnetic memory devices. Energy-efficient spintronic devices require a spin-current source with a large SOT efficiency ($ξ$) and electrical conductivity ($σ$), and an efficient spin injection across a transparent interface. Herein, we use single crystals of the van der Waals (vdW) topological semimetal WTe$_2$ and vdW ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ to satisfy the requirements in their all-vdW-heterostructure with an atomically sharp interface. …

There has been a huge increase of interests in two-dimensional van der Waals materials over the past ten years or so with the conspicuous absence of one particular class of materials: magnetic van der Waals systems. In this Viewpoint, we point it out and illustrate how we might be able to benefit from exploring these so-far neglected materials.
In recent years, noncollinear topological textures have long gained increasing research attentions for their high values of both fundamental researches and potential applications. The recent discovery of intrinsic orders in magnetic and polar two-dimensional van der Waals materials provides a new ideal platform for the investigation of noncollinear topological textures. Here, we review the theoretical and experimental progresses on noncollinear topological textures in two-dimensional van der Waals materials in very recent years. During these years, magnetic skyrmions of both Bloch and Néel typ…
The recent emergence of 2D van der Waals magnets down to atomic layer thickness provides an exciting platform for exploring quantum magnetism and spintronics applications. The van der Waals nature stabilizes the long-range ferromagnetic order as a result of magnetic anisotropy. Furthermore, giant tunneling magnetoresistance and electrical control of magnetism have been reported. However, the potential of 2D van der Waals magnets for magnonics, magnon-based spintronics, has not been explored yet. Here, we report the experimental observation of long-distance magnon transport in quasi-twodimensio…
The van der Waals heterostructures are a fertile frontier for discovering emergent phenomena in condensed matter systems. They are constructed by stacking elements of a large library of two-dimensional materials, which couple together through van der Waals interactions. However, the number of possible combinations within this library is staggering, and fully exploring their potential is a daunting task. Here we introduce van der Waals metamaterials to rapidly prototype and screen their quantum counterparts. These layered metamaterials are designed to reshape the flow of ultrasound to mimic ele…
Van der Waals-Casimir dispersion interactions between two apposed graphene layers, a graphene layer and a substrate, and in a multilamellar graphene system are analyzed within the framework of the Lifshitz theory. This formulation hinges on a known form of the dielectric response function of an undoped or doped graphene sheet, assumed to be of a random phase approximation form. In the geometry of two apposed layers the separation dependence of the van der Waals-Casimir interaction for both types of graphene sheets is determined and compared with some well known limiting cases. In a multilamell…
The exfoliation of two naturally occurring van der Waals minerals, graphite and molybdenite, arouse an unprecedented level of interest by the scientific community and shaped a whole new field of research: 2D materials research. Several years later, the family of van der Waals materials that can be exfoliated to isolate 2D materials keeps growing, but most of them are synthetic. Interestingly, in nature plenty of naturally occurring van der Waals minerals can be found with a wide range of chemical compositions and crystal structures whose properties are mostly unexplored so far. This Perspectiv…
Using a unified macroscopic QED formalism, we derive an integral equation for the van der Waals energy of a two-level atomic system near a carbon nanotube. The equation is valid for both strong and weak atom-vacuum-field coupling. By solving it numerically, we demonstrate the inapplicability of weak-coupling-based van der Waals interaction models in a close vicinity of the nanotube surface.
The spatial dependence of the van der Waals (vdW) energy between graphene and hexagonal boron-nitride (h-BN) is investigated using atomistic simulations. The van der Waals energy between graphene and h-BN shows a hexagonal superlattice structure identical to the observed Moiré pattern in the local density of states (LDOS) which depends on the lattice mismatch and misorientation angle between graphene and h-BN. Our results provide atomistic features of the weak van der Waals interaction between graphene and BN which are in agreement with experiment and provide an analytical expression for the s…
Graphene constitutes one of the key elements in many functional van der Waals heterostructures. However, it has negligible optical visibility due to its monolayer nature. Here we study the visibility of graphene in various van der Waals heterostructures and include the effects of the source spectrum, oblique incidence and the spectral sensitivity of the detector to obtain a realistic model. A visibility experiment is performed at different wavelengths, resulting in a very good agreement with our calculations. This allows us to reliably predict the conditions for better visibility of graphene i…
We studied the van der Waals interactions of two finite, solid, cylindrical rods at arbitrary angle and position with respect to each other. An analytic interpolative formula for the interaction potential energy is constructed, based on various asymptotic cases. The potential can be readily used for numerical and analytic description of multi-wall carbon nanotubes, metallic nanorods, rod-shaped colloids, or any other similar objects with significant van der Waals interactions.
We derive a first--principles method of determining the van der Waals or Casimir pressure in a dissipative and dispersive planar multilayered system by calculating the Maxwell stress tensor in a fictitious layer of vacuum, that is eventually made to vanish, introduced in the structure. This is illustrated by calculating the van der Waals pressure in a thin film with dissipative properties embedded between two semi--infinite media.
Van der Waals heterostructures of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride feature a moiré superlattice for graphene's Dirac electrons. Here, we review the effects generated by this superlattice, including a specific miniband structure featuring gaps and secondary Dirac points, and a fractal spectrum of magnetic minibands known as Hofstadter's butterfly.
We report an experimental study of excitons in a double quantum well van der Waals heterostructure made of atomically thin layers of \Mo* and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The emission of neutral and charged excitons is controlled by gate voltage, temperature, and both the helicity and the power of optical excitation.
Van der Waals materials are a new platform to study two-dimensional systems, including magnetic order. Since the number of spins is relatively small, measuring the magnetization is challenging. Here we report spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) up to room temperature caused by the magnetic surface texture of exfoliated flakes of magnetic van der Waals materials. For the antiferromagnet FePS3 the SMR amounts to 0.1 % for an applied magnetic field of 7 T at 5 K which implies a substantial canting of the magnetic moments relative to the colinear antiferromagnetic order. The canting is substantial e…
A version of the Green's functions theory of the Van der Waals forces which can be conveniently used in the presence of spatial dispersion is presented. The theory is based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and is valid for interacting bodies, separated by vacuum. Objections against theories acounting for the spatial dispersion are discussed.
We predict a discriminatory interaction between a chiral molecule and an achiral molecule which is mediated by a chiral body. To achieve this, we generalize the van der Waals interaction potential between two ground-state molecules with electric, magnetic and chiral response to non-trivial environments. The force is evaluated using second-order perturbation theory with an effective Hamiltonian. Chiral media enhance or reduce the free interaction via many-body interactions, making it possible to measure the chiral contributions to the van der Waals force with current technology. The van der Waa…
Van der Waals interactions between flat surfaces in uniaxial anisotropic media are investigated in the nonretarded limit. The main focus is the effect of nonzero tilt between the optical axis and the surface normal on the strength of van der Waals attraction. General expressions for the van der Waals free energy are derived using the surface mode method and the transfer-matrix formalism. To facilitate numerical calculations a temperature-dependent three-band parameterization of the dielectric tensor of the liquid crystal 5CB is developed. A solid slab immersed in a liquid crystal experiences a…
The multi-scale computational method of combining first-principles calculation and finite element electromagnetic simulations is used to study plasmon-enhanced interlayer charge transfer (ICT) exciton of 2D lateral and van der Waals MoS2/WS2 heterostructure with 2H phase. The weak ICT excitons are observed in the 2H lateral and van der Waals MoS$_2$/WS$_2$ heterostructures. Theoretical results reveal the physical principle of plexciton resulting from strong coupling between plasmonic and ICT exciton. The weak CT exciton can be strongly enhanced by metal plasmon, can provide a new way to observ…
