We experimentally verify the existence of two model-type magnetic ground states which were previously predicted but so far unobserved. We find them in Mn monolayers on the Re(0001) surface using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. For fcc stacking of Mn the collinear row-wise antiferromagnetic state occurs, whereas for hcp Mn a three-dimensional spin structure appears, which is a superposition of three row-wise antiferromagnetic states and is known as triple-Q state. Density functional theory calculations elucidate the subtle interplay of different magnetic interactions to form these spin structures and provide insight into the role played by relativistic effects.
We present a theoretical study of the spectrum of electrons confined in triple concentric rings. An unusual ordering and rich variety of angular momentum transitions are found that depend on the coupling between the rings and the confinement potential of the rings. Using the Configuration Interaction (CI) method, we calculated the two electron energy spectrum. Spin singlet to spin triplet transitions of the electron ground state are predicted and a fractional Aharonov-Bohm effect is found. We show that both the period and amplitude of the spin singlet - triplet energy gap depend strongly on th…
We analyze transport through both a double quantum dot and a triple quantum dot with inhomogeneous Zeeman splittings in the presence of crossed dc and ac magnetic fields. We find that strongly spin-polarized current can be achieved by tuning the relative energies of the Zeeman-split levels of the dots, by means of electric gate voltages: depending on the energy level detuning, the double quantum dot works either as spin-up or spin-down filter. We show that a triple quantum dot in series under crossed dc and ac magnetic fields can act not only as spin-filter but also as spin-inverter.
The effect of an in-plane magnetic field on resonant tunneling in a symmetric GaAs/AlYGa1-YAs triple-barrier resonant tunneling TBRT structure is presented. The splitting of the resonant lines (and hence the coupling energy vs. magnetic induction) for the ground and the first excited resonant doublet shifts up in energy by increasing the magnetic induction. Each of branches in the resonant dispersion relations shows a parabolic behavior with the location of the cyclotron orbit center. It is expected that, at very high fields, the interaction with confined phonons be enhanced, due to phonon cou…
We analyze coherent spin phenomena in triple quantum dots in triangular configuration under crossed DC and AC magnetic fields. In particular, we discuss the interplay between Aharonov-Bohm current oscillations, coherent electron trapping and spin blockade under electron spin resonance conditions. We demonstrate that, for certain field frequencies, AC magnetic fields induce an antiresonant behavior in the current, allowing for both removal and restoration of entangled spin blockaded states by tuning the AC field frequency. Our theoretical predictions indicate how to manipulate spin qubits in a …
Visibility of singlet-triplet qubit readout is reduced to almost zero in large magnetic field gradients due to relaxation processes. Here we present a new readout technique that is robust against relaxation and allows for measurement when previously studied methods fail. This technique maps the qubit onto spin states that are immune to relaxation using a spin dependent electron tunneling process between the qubit and the lead. We probe this readout's performance as a function of magnetic field gradient and applied magnetic field, and optimize the pulse applied to the qubit through experiment a…
We derive a formalism describing quantum-coherent features of spin-polarized charge current through a partially-polarized spin triplet defect in a $\textit{transverse}$ magnetic field. We predict distinct few-milli-tesla-dc magnetoresistance signatures that identify a $\textit{single}$ spin-triplet center's character and reveal the orientation of the spin triplet's zero-field splitting axis relative to the magnetic contact's polarization. For example, in 4H-SiC the single $(hh)$, $(kk)$, $(hk)$, and $(kh)$ divacancies are all distinct. Spin-polarized current flow efficiently polarizes the spin…
Spin-orbit mediated phonon relaxation in a two-dimensional quantum dot is investigated using different confining potentials. Elliptical harmonic oscillator and cylindrical well results are compared to each other in the case of a two-electron GaAs quantum dot subjected to a tilted magnetic field. The lowest energy set of two-body singlet and triplet states are calculated including spin-orbit and magnetic effects. These are used to calculate the phonon induced transition rate from the excited triplet to the ground state singlet for magnetic fields up to where the states cross. The roll of the cu…
We report a successful measurement of the magnetic field-induced spin singlet-triplet transition in silicon-based coupled dot systems. Our specific experimental scheme incorporates a lateral gate-controlled Coulomb-blockaded structure in Si to meet the proposed scheme of Loss and DiVincenzo [1], and a non-equilibrium single-electron tunneling technique to probe the fine energy splitting between the spin singlet and triplet, which varies as a function of applying magnetic fields and interdot coupling constant. Our results, exhibiting the singlet-triplet crossing at a magnetic field for various …
In a single-walled carbon nanotube, we observe the spin-1/2 Kondo effect. The energy of spin-resolved Kondo peaks is proportional to magnetic field at high fields, contrary to recent reports. At lower fields, the energy falls below this linear dependence, in qualitative agreement with theoretical expectations. For even electron occupancy, we observe a spin-1 Kondo effect due to the degeneracy of the triplet ground states. Tuning gate voltage within the same Coulomb diamond drives a transition to a singlet ground state. We also independently tune the energy difference between singlet and triple…
Combining the first-principles noncollinear calculations of scattering matrices with Andreev approximation, we investigated the spin-triplet Andreev reflection (AR) spectra for the interface between half-metallic ferromagnet Co$_{2}$MnSi and \emph{s}-wave BCS superconductor Al with and without interfacial roughness, where the orientations of magnetic moments near the interface are randomly distributed. The calculated results show that the AR spectra have peak structures near zero bias for the clean interface with relative weak magnetic disorder. With increasing the degree of interfacial roughn…
Similar to Weyl fermions, a recently discovered topological fermion "triple point" can be generated from the splitting of Dirac fermion while the system has inversion symmetry (IS) breaking or time reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking. Inducing triple points in IS breaking symmorphic systems have been well studied, whereas in TRS breaking symmorphic systems have not yet. In this work, we extend the theory of searching triple points to all symmorphic magnetic systems. We list all $k$ paths of all symmorphic systems which allow the existence of triple points. With this systematic study, we also find…
We investigate the singlet-triplet relaxation due to the spin-orbit coupling together with the electron-phonon scattering in two-electron multivalley silicon single quantum dots, using the exact diagonalization method and the Fermi golden rule. The electron-electron Coulomb interaction, which is crucial in the electronic structure, is explicitly included. The multivalley effect induced by the interface scattering is also taken into account. We first study the configuration with a magnetic field in the Voigt configuration and identify the relaxation channel of the experimental data by Xiao {\em…
Theory of electronic transport through a triangular triple quantum dot subject to a perpendicular magnetic field is developed using a tight binding model. We show that magnetic field allows to engineer degeneracies in the triple quantum dot energy spectrum. The degeneracies lead to zero electronic transmission and sharp dips in the current whenever a pair of degenerate states lies between the chemical potential of the two leads. These dips can occur with a periodicity of one flux quantum if only two levels contribute to the current or with half flux quantum if the three levels of the triple do…
In superconducting spintronics, it is essential to generate spin-triplet Cooper pairs on demand. Up to now, proposals to do so concentrate on hybrid structures in which a superconductor (SC) is combined with a magnetically ordered material (or an external magnetic field). We, instead, identify a novel way to create and isolate spin-triplet Cooper pairs in the absence of any magnetic ordering. This achievement is only possible because we drive a system with strong spin-orbit interaction--the Dirac surface states of a strong topological insulator (TI)--out of equilibrium. In particular, we consi…
We demonstrate that the recently discovered triple-Q (3Q) magnetic structure, when embedded in a magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) system, gives rise to the emergence of topological superconductivity. We investigate the structure of chiral Majorana edge modes at domain walls, and show that they can be distinguished from trivial in-gap modes through the spatial distribution of the induced supercurrents. Finally, we show that topological superconductivity in 3Q MSH systems is a robust phenomenon that does not depend on the relative alignment of the magnetic and superconducting layers, or on the…
Charge noise is the main hurdle preventing high-fidelity operation, in particular that of two-qubit gates, of semiconductor-quantum-dot-based spin qubits. While certain sweet spots where charge noise is substantially suppressed have been demonstrated in several types of spin qubits, the existence of one for coupled singlet-triplet qubits is unclear. We theoretically demonstrate, using full configuration-interaction calculations, that a range of nearly sweet spots appear in the coupled singlet-triplet qubit system when a strong enough magnetic field is applied externally. We further demonstrate…
We demonstrate theoretically that a dissipationless spin current can flow a long distance through a diffusive normal metal by using superconductors interfaced with magnetic insulators. The magnitude of this spin supercurrent is controlled via the magnetization orientation of the magnetic insulators. The spin supercurrent obtained in this way is conserved in the normal metal just like the charge-current and interestingly has a term which is independent of the superconducting phase difference. The quantum state of the system can be switched between 0 and $π$ by reversing the insulators from a pa…
Employing a spin-parameterized Kleldysh-Usadel technique for the diffusive regime, we demonstrate that even in the low proximity limit, considerable long-ranged triplet supercurrents can be effectively generated by spin-singlet supercurrents flowing \textit{parallel} to the interfaces of uniform double ferromagnet interlayers with noncollinear exchange fields "{\it independent}" of actual junction geometry. The triplet supercurrents are found to be most pronounced when the thicknesses of the ferromagnet strips are unequal. To experimentally verify this generic phenomenon, we propose an accessi…
We study two tunnel-coupled quantum dots each with a spin 1/2 and attached to leads in the Coulomb blockade regime. We study the interplay between Kondo correlations and the singlet-triplet exchange splitting $K$ between the two spins. We calculate the cotunneling current with elastic and inelastic contributions and its renormalization due to Kondo correlations, away and at the degeneracy point K=0. We show that these Kondo correlations induce pronounced peaks in the conductance as function of magnetic field $B$, inter-dot coupling $t_0$, and temperature. Moreover, the long-range part of the C…
We analyze a superconductor-ferromagnet (S/F) system with a spiral magnetic structure in the ferromagnet F for a weak and strong exchange field. The long-range triplet component (LRTC) penetrating into the ferromagnet over a long distance is calculated for both cases. In the dirty limit (or weak ferromagnetism) we study the LRTC for conical ferromagnets. Its spatial dependence undergoes a qualitative change as a function of the cone angle θ. At small angles the LRTC decays in the ferromagnet exponentially in a monotonic way. If the angle θexceeds a certain value, the exponential decay of the L…
Electron transport properties in a triple-quantum-dot ring with three terminals are theoretically studied. By introducing local Rashba spin-orbit interaction on an individual quantum dot, we calculate the charge and spin currents in one lead. We find that a pure spin current appears in the absence of a magnetic field. The polarization direction of the spin current can be inverted by altering the bias voltage. In addition, by tuning the magnetic field strength, the charge and spin currents reach their respective peaks alternately.
We analyze a generalized Dirac system, where the dispersion along the $k_{x}$ and $k_{y}$ axes is $N$-th power and linear along the $k_{z}$ axis. When we apply magnetic field, there emerge $N$ monopole-antimonopole pairs beyond a certain critical field in general. As the direction of the magnetic field is rotated toward the $z$ axis, monopoles move to the north pole while antimonopoles move to the south pole. When the magnetic field becomes parallel to the $z$ axis, they merge into one monopole or one antimonopole whose monopole charge is $\pm N$. The resultant system is a multiple-Weyl semime…
We study the superconducting instability in disordered non-centrosymmetric monolayers with intrinsic Ising spin-orbit coupling (SOC) subjected to an in-plane Zeeman magnetic field. The pairing interaction contains the channels allowed by crystal symmetry, such that in general, the pairing state is a mixture of singlet and triplet Cooper pairs. The joint action of SOC and Zeeman field selects a specific in-plane $\mathbf{d}$-vector triplet component to couple with the singlets, which gains robustness against disorder through the coupling. The out-of-plane $\mathbf{d}$-vector component, that in …
