We demonstrate theoretically that a dissipationless spin current can flow a long distance through a diffusive normal metal by using superconductors interfaced with magnetic insulators. The magnitude of this spin supercurrent is controlled via the magnetization orientation of the magnetic insulators. The spin supercurrent obtained in this way is conserved in the normal metal just like the charge-current and interestingly has a term which is independent of the superconducting phase difference. The quantum state of the system can be switched between 0 and $π$ by reversing the insulators from a parallel to antiparallel configuration with an external field. We show that the spin-current is carried through the normal metal by superconducting triplet (odd-frequency) correlations and that the superconducting phase difference can be used to enhance these, leaving clear spectroscopic fingerprints in the density of states.
At the interface between a ferromagnetic insulator and a superconductor there is a coupling between the spins of the two materials. We show that when a supercurrent carried by triplet Cooper pairs flows through the superconductor, the coupling induces a magnon spin current in the adjacent ferromagnetic insulator. The effect is dominated by Cooper pairs polarized in the same direction as the ferromagnetic insulator, so that charge and spin supercurrents produce similar results. Our findings demonstrate a way of converting Cooper pair supercurrents to magnon spin currents.
Cooper pairs in superconductors are normally spin singlet. Nevertheless, recent studies suggest that spin-triplet Cooper pairs can be created at carefully engineered superconductor-ferromagnet interfaces. If Cooper pairs are spin-polarized they would transport not only charge but also a net spin component, but without dissipation, and therefore minimize the heating effects associated with spintronic devices. Although it is now established that triplet supercurrents exist, their most interesting property - spin - is only inferred indirectly from transport measurements. In conventional spintroni…
Serial double quantum dots created in semiconductor nanostructures provide a versatile platform for investigating two-electron spin quantum states, which can be tuned by electrostatic gating and an external magnetic field. In this work, we directly measure the supercurrent reversal between adjacent charge states of an InAs nanowire double quantum dot with superconducting leads, in good agreement with theoretical models. In the even charge parity sector, we observe a supercurrent blockade with increasing magnetic field, corresponding to the spin singlet to triplet transition. Our results demons…
Inverse proximity effect and influence of disorder on triplet supercurrents in strongly spin-polarized ferromagnets
我们讨论了强自旋极化铁磁体中的约瑟夫森效应,其中三重态相关性是通过自旋活性界面散射诱导的,扩展了我们早期的工作[Phys. Rev. Lett.
We study spin transfer torques induced by a spin-triplet supercurrent in a magnet with the superconducting proximity effect. By a perturbative approach, we show that spin-triplet correlations realize new types of torques, which are analogous to the adiabatic and non-adiabatic ($β$) torques, without extrinsic spin-flip scattering. Remarkable advantages compared to conventional spin-transfer torques are highlighted in domain wall manipulation. Oscillatory motions of a domain wall do not occur for a small Gilbert damping, and the threshold current density to drive its motion becomes zero in the a…
We study experimentally nanoscale Josephson junctions and Josephson spin-valves containing strong Ni ferromagnets. We observe that in contrast to junctions, spin valves with the same geometry exhibit anomalous Ic(H) patterns with two peaks separated by a dip. We develop several techniques for in-situ characterization of micromagnetic states in our nano-devices, including magnetoresistance, absolute Josephson fluxometry and First-Order-Reversal-Curves analysis. They reveal a clear correlation of the dip in supercurrent with the antiparallel state of a spin-valve and the peaks with two noncollin…
An inhomogeneous magnetic exchange field at a superconductor/ferromagnet interface converts spin-singlet Cooper pairs to a spin-aligned (i.e. spin-polarized) triplet state. Although the decay envelope of such triplet pairs within ferromagnetic materials is well studied, little is known about their decay in non-magnetic metals and superconductors, and in particular in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here we investigate devices in which triplet supercurrents are injected into the s-wave superconductor Nb. In the normal state of Nb, triplet supercurrents decay over a distance of 5 nm, …

We study a Cooper-pair transistor realized by two Josephson weak links that enclose a superconducting island in an InSb-Al hybrid nanowire. When the nanowire is subject to a magnetic field, isolated subgap levels arise in the superconducting island and, due to the Coulomb blockade, mediate a supercurrent by coherent co-tunneling of Cooper pairs. We show that the supercurrent resulting from such co-tunneling events exhibits, for low to moderate magnetic fields, a phase offset that discriminates even and odd charge ground states on the superconducting island. Notably, this phase offset persists wh…
Spin-triplet Cooper pairs induced in ferromagnets form the centrepiece of the emerging field of superconducting spintronics [1,2]. Usually the focus of research is on the spin polarization of the triplets, potentially enabling low-dissipation magnetization switching and domain wall motion. However, the fundamental mechanism for generating triplet pairs [3,4] also permits control over a parameter which has not been addressed before, namely the spatial distribution of the supercurrent. Here we demonstrate this control by tailoring distinct supercurrent pathways in the ferromagnetic weak link of …
Local spins coupled to superconductors give rise to several emerging phenomena directly linked to the competition between Cooper pair formation and magnetic exchange. These effects are generally scrutinized using a spectroscopic approach which relies on detecting the in-gap bound modes arising from Cooper pair breaking, the so-called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. However, the impact of local magnetic impurities on the superconducting order parameter remains largely unexplored. Here, we use scanning Josephson spectroscopy to directly visualize the effect of magnetic perturbations on Cooper pai…
We have generalized a quasiclassical model for Weyl semimetals with a tilted band in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. This model is applicable to ballistic, moderately disordered, and samples containing a high density of nonmagnetic impurities. We employ this formalism and show that a self-biased supercurrent, creating a ϕ0-junction, can flow through a triplet channel in Weyl semimetals. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that multiple supercurrent reversals are accessible through varying junction thickness and parameters characterizing Weyl semimetals. We discuss the in…
Superconducting spintronics is based on the creation of spin-triplet Cooper pairs in ferromagnet-superconductor (F-S) hybrid junctions. Previous proposals to manipulate spin-polarized supercurrents on-demand typically require the ability to carefully control magnetic materials. We, instead, propose a quantum heat engine that generates equal-spin Cooper pairs and drives supercurrents on-demand without manipulating magnetic components. We consider a S-F-S junction, connecting two leads at different temperatures, on top of the helical edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator. Heat and char…
Parity control of superconducting islands hosting Majorana zero modes (MZMs) is required to operate topological qubits made from proximitized semiconductor nanowires. We, therefore, study parity effects in hybrid InAs-Al single-Cooper-pair transistors (SCPTs) as a first step. In particular, we investigate the gate-charge supercurrent modulation and observe a consistent 2$e$-periodic pattern indicating a general lack of low-energy subgap states in these nanowires at zero magnetic field. In a parallel magnetic field, an even-odd pattern develops with a gate-charge spacing that oscillates as a fu…
The existence of spin-triplet superconductivity in non-collinear magnetic heterostructures with superconductors is by now well established. This observation lays the foundation of superconducting spintronics with the aim to create a low-power consuming devices in order to replace the conventional electronics limited by heating. From a fundamental point of view the investigation of the structure and properties of spin-triplet Cooper pairs continues. Recently, spectroscopic evidence has shown to offer more detailed insights in the structure of triplet Cooper pairs than the supercurrent. Hence, w…
In superconducting spintronics, it is essential to generate spin-triplet Cooper pairs on demand. Up to now, proposals to do so concentrate on hybrid structures in which a superconductor (SC) is combined with a magnetically ordered material (or an external magnetic field). We, instead, identify a novel way to create and isolate spin-triplet Cooper pairs in the absence of any magnetic ordering. This achievement is only possible because we drive a system with strong spin-orbit interaction--the Dirac surface states of a strong topological insulator (TI)--out of equilibrium. In particular, we consi…
In a Josephson junction (JJ), Cooper pairs are transported via Andreev bound states (ABSs) between superconductors. The ABSs in the weak link of multi-terminal (MT) JJs can coherently hybridize two Cooper pairs among different superconducting electrodes, resulting in the Cooper quartet (CQ) involving four fermions entanglement. The energy spectrum of these CQ-ABS can be controlled by biasing MT-JJs due to the AC Josephson effect. Here, using gate tunable four-terminal graphene JJs complemented with a flux loop, we construct CQs with a tunable spectrum. The critical quartet supercurrent exhibit…
It was theoretically proposed that a forward-biased p-n junction with a superconducting layer (P-N-S), would produce pure, polarization entangled photons due to inherent spin-singlet pairing of electrons. However, any heterostructure interface generically induces Rashba spin-orbit coupling, which in turn generates a mixed singlet-triplet superconducting order parameter. Here we study the effect of triplet pairing on the purity of photons produced through Cooper pair recombination. A unique directional dependence of the state purity is found for a triplet superconductor with fixed $\vec{d}$: pu…
Conventional spin-singlet superconductivity that deeply penetrates into ferromagnets is typically killed by the exchange interaction, which destroys the spin-singlet pairs. Under certain circumstances, however, superconductivity survives this interaction by adopting the pairing behavior of spin triplets. The necessary conditions for the emergence of triplet pairs are well-understood, owing to significant developments in theoretical frameworks and experiments. The long-term challenges to inducing superconductivity in magnetic semiconductors, however, involve difficulties in observing the finite…
