A cohomology class of a smooth complex variety of dimension $n$ has coniveau $\geq c$ if it vanishes in the complement of a closed subvariety of codimension $\geq c$, and has strong coniveau $\geq c$ if it comes by proper pushforward from the cohomology of a smooth variety of dimension $\leq n-c$. We show that these two notions differ in general, both for integral classes on smooth projective varieties and for rational classes on smooth open varieties.
We construct two functorial filtrations on the algebraic $K$-theory of schemes of finite type over a field $k$ that may admit arbitrary singularities and may be non-reduced, one called the coniveau filtration, and the other called the motivic coniveau filtration. Restricting to the subcategory of smooth $k$-schemes, our coniveau filtration coincides with the classical coniveau (also known as the topological) filtration on algebraic $K$-theory of D. Quillen, whereas our motivic coniveau filtration coincides with the homotopy coniveau filtration for algebraic $K$-theory of M. Levine.
There is a natural descending filtration on the singular cohomology of a complex smooth projective variety called the coniveau filtration. The generalized Hodge conjecture would imply, rather trivially, that the coniveau filtration is compatible with pushforwards, pullbacks and products. The purpose of this paper is to prove this statement unconditionally. This completes the argument in math.AG/0102070.
A conjecture of Orlov predicts that derived equivalent smooth projective varieties over a field have isomorphic Chow motives. The conjecture is known for curves, and was recently observed for surfaces by Huybrechts. In this paper we focus on threefolds over perfect fields, and unconditionally secure results, which are implied by Orlov's conjecture, concerning the geometric coniveau filtration, and abelian varieties attached to smooth projective varieties.
We prove a structural result about the space of one cycles of a separably rationally connected variety or a separably rationally connected fibration over a curve, either as a topological group or as an h-sheaf. This has the following consequences: a proof that the strong coniveau filtration agrees with the coniveau filtration on degree 3 homology, and a result on the integral Tate conjecture for homologically trivial one cycles.
In this note we consider the coniveau filtration on the Grothendieck group of a regular separated noetherian scheme and its behavior with respect to the multiplication and the lambda ring structure. We show that a weak multiplicativity result can be proved. A strong compatibility result on Adams operations is also obtained.
We introduce the motivic coniveau exact couple of a smooth scheme, in the framework of mixed motives, whose property is to universally give rise to coniveau spectral sequences through realizations. The main result is a computation of its differentials in terms of residues and transfers of mixed motives, with a formula analog to the one defining the Weil divisor of a rational function. We then show how to recover and extend classical results of Bloch and Ogus for motivic realizations.
We examine the "homotopy coniveau tower" for a general cohomology theory on smooth k-schemes and give a new proof that the layers of this tower for K-theory agree with motivic cohomology. In addition, the homotopy coniveau tower agrees with Voevodsky's slice tower for $S^1$-spectra, giving a proof of a connectedness conjecture of Voevodsky. The homotopy coniveau tower construction extends to a tower of functors on the Morel-Voevodsky stable homotopy category, and we identify this $P^1$-stable homotopy coniveau tower with Voevodsky's slice filtration for $P^1$-spectra. We also show that the 0th…
We prove that the degree k unramified cohomology with torsion coefficients of a smooth complex projective variety X with small CH_0(X) has a filtration of length [k/2], whose first piece is the torsion part of the quotient of the degree k+1 integral singular cohomology by its coniveau 2 subgroup, and whose next graded piece is controlled by the Griffiths group Griff^{k/2+1}(X) when k is even and is related to the higher Chow group CH^{(k+3)/2}(X, 1) when k is odd. The first piece is a generalization of the Artin-Mumford invariant (k=2) and the Colliot-Thelene-Voisin invariant (k=3). We also gi…
On a smooth projective variety over the complex numbers, there is the coniveau from the coniveau filtration, which is called geometric coniveau. On the same variety, there is another coniveau from the maximal sub-Hodge structure, which is called Hodge coniveau. In this paper we show they are equivalent.
The Bloch-Beilinson-Murre conjectures predict the existence of a descending filtration on Chow groups of smooth projective varieties which is functorial with respect to the action of correspondences and whose graded parts depend solely on the topology -- i.e. the cohomology -- of $X$. In this paper, we wish to explore, at the cost of having to assume general conjectures about algebraic cycles, how the coniveau filtration on the cohomology of $X$ has an incidence on the Chow groups of $X$. However, by keeping such assumptions minimal, we are able to prove some of these conjectures either in low…
In this note we study the functoriality of the coniveau filtration in motivic homotopy theory via a moving lemma over a base scheme, extending previous works of Levine and Bachmann-Yakerson. The main result is that the motivic stable homotopy category can be modeled on a smaller site, the "smooth-smooth site". The proof is based on a new approach to the purity theorem of Morel-Voevodsky using specialization maps, which turns out to hold even in absence of the $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy invariance property. Applications to the homotopy coniveau tower and to higher Chow-Witt groups are given.
This is a survey of author's results on weight structures and Voevodsky's motives. Weight structures are natural counterparts of t-structures (for triangulated categories) introduced by the author. They allow to construct weight complexes, weight filtrations, and weight spectral sequences for various cohomology theories. Partial cases of the latter are: 'classical' weight spectral sequences (for singular and etale cohomology), coniveau spectral sequences, and Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequences. All of those are mentioned in the current paper. The details, proofs, and several more results cou…
The Chow groups of codimension-p algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on a smooth algebraic variety X have steadfastly resisted the efforts of algebraic geometers to fathom their structure. This book explores a "linearization" approach to this problem, focusing on the infinitesimal structure of the Chow groups near their identity elements. This method was adumbrated in recent work of Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths. Similar topics have been explored by Bloch, Stienstra, Hesselholt, Van der Kallen, and others. A famous formula of Bloch expresses the Chow groups as Zariski sheaf cohomol…
We introduce the notion of refined unramified cohomology of algebraic schemes and prove comparison theorems that identify some of these groups with cycle groups. This recovers for cycles of low codimensions on smooth projective varieties previous results of Bloch--Ogus, Colliot-Thélène--Voisin, Kahn, Voisin, and Ma. We combine our approach with the Bloch--Kato conjecture, proven by Voevodsky, to show that on a smooth complex projective variety, any homologically trivial torsion cycle with trivial Abel--Jacobi invariant has coniveau 1. This establishes a torsion version of a conjecture of Janns…
We show that the image of the Abel-Jacobi map admits functorially a model over the field of definition, with the property that the Abel-Jacobi map is equivariant with respect to this model. The cohomology of this abelian variety over the base field is isomorphic as a Galois representation to the deepest part of the coniveau filtration of the cohomology of the projective variety. Moreover, we show that this model over the base field is dominated by the Albanese variety of a product of components of the Hilbert scheme of the projective variety, and thus we answer a question of Mazur. We also rec…
Given a smooth projective variety $X$ over a field $k$ of characteristic zero, we consider the composition of the de Rham cohomology cycle class map over $k$ from the Chow group $CH^q(X\times_kK)$, where $K$ is the field of fractions of henselization $A^h$ of the local ring of a smooth closed point of a variety over the field $k$ with an appropriate projection: $CH^q(X\times_kK)\longrightarrow\bigoplus_{p=1}^qgr_F^{q-p}N^{q-p} H^{2q-p}_{dR/k}(X)\otimes_kΩ^p_{A^h/k,{\rm closed}},$ where $F^{\bullet}$ and $N^{\bullet}$ are the Hodge and the coniveau filtrations on the de Rham cohomology, respect…
We show that a natural isomorphism between the rational cohomology groups of the two zero-dimensional Hilbert schemes of $n$-points of two surfaces, the affine plane minus the axes and the cotangent bundle of an elliptic curve, exchanges the weight filtration on the first set of cohomology groups with the perverse Leray filtration associated with a natural fibration on the second set of cohomology groups. We discuss some associated hard Lefschetz phenomena.
Let a finite group $G$ act on the complex plane $({\Bbb C}^2, 0)$. We consider multi-index filtrations on the spaces of germs of holomorphic functions of two variables equivariant with respect to 1-dimensional representations of the group $G$ defined by components of a modification of the complex plane ${\Bbb C}^2$ at the origin or by branches of a $G$-invariant plane curve singularity $(C,0)\subset({\Bbb C}^2,0)$. We give formulae for the Poincare series of these filtrations. In particular, this gives a new method to obtain the Poincare series of analogous filtrations on the rings of germs of…
In this paper we prove that a classical theorem by McAdam about the analytic spread of an ideal in a Noetherian local ring continues to be true for divisorial filtrations on a two dimensional normal excellent local ring $R$, and that the Hilbert polynomial of the fiber cone of a divisorial filtration on $R$ has a Hilbert function which is the sum of a linear polynomial and a bounded function. We prove these theorems by first studying asymptotic properties of divisors on a resolution of singularities of the spectrum of $R$. The filtration of the symbolic powers of an ideal is an example of a di…
Earlier, for an action of a finite group $G$ on a germ of an analytic variety, an equivariant $G$-Poincaré series of a multi-index filtration in the ring of germs of functions on the variety was defined as an element of the Grothendieck ring of $G$-sets with an additional structure. We discuss to which extend the $G$-Poincaré series of a filtration defined by a set of curve or divisorial valuations on the ring of germs of analytic functions in two variables determines the (equivariant) topology of the curve or of the set of divisors.
We prove the equality of two non-logarithmic ramification filtrations defined by Matsuda and Abbes-Saito for the abelianized absolute Galois group of a complete discrete valuation field in positive characteristic. We also compute the refined Swan conductor and the characteristic form of a character of the fundamental group of a smooth separated scheme over a perfect field of positive characteristic by using sheaves of Witt vectors.
Let k be a perfect field of characteristic different from two. We show that the filtration on the Grothendieck-Witt group GW(k) induced by the slice filtration for the sphere spectrum in the motivic stable homotopy category is the I-adic filtration, where I is the augmentation ideal in GW(k).
We associate to each algebraic variety defined over $\mathbb{R}$ a filtered cochain complex, which computes the cohomology with compact supports and $\mathbb{Z}\_2$-coefficients of the set of its real points. This filtered complex is additive for closed inclusions and acyclic for resolution of singularities, and is unique up to filtered quasi-isomorphism. It is represented by the dual filtration of the geometric filtration on semialgebraic chains with closed supports defined by McCrory and Parusiński, and leads to a spectral sequence which computes the weight filtration on cohomology with comp…

Given a noetherian abelian category $\mathcal Z$ of homological dimension two with a tilting object $T$, the abelian category $\mathcal Z$ and the abelian category of modules over $\text{End} (T)^{\textit{op}}$ are related by a sequence of two tilts; we give an explicit description of the torsion pairs involved. We then use our techniques to obtain a simplified proof of a theorem of Jensen-Madsen-Su, that $\mathcal Z$ has a three-step filtration by extension-closed subcategories. Finally, we generalise Jensen-Madsen-Su's filtration to a noetherian abelian category of any finite homological dim…
