A generalized model to study dislocation loops growth in irradiated binary Zr-based alloys is presented. It takes into account temperature effects, efficiencies of loops to absorb point defects dependent on the loop size, an influence of locality of grain boundary sink strength, and concentration of the alloying element. This model is used to describe the dynamics of loop radii growth in zirconium-niobium alloys under neutron irradiation at reactor conditions. A growth of both loop radii and strains is studied at different grain sizes, location from grain boundaries, and concentration of niobium. It is shown that locality of grain boundary sinks results in a non-uniform deformation of the crystal inside the grains. Additionally, an introduction of niobium as an alloying element decreases the loop radii but promotes the growth of local strains inside the grains.

Defect microstructures formed in ion-irradiated metals, for example iron or tungsten, often exhibit patterns of spatially ordered nano-scale dislocation loops. We show that such ordered dislocation loop structures may form spontaneously as a result of Brownian motion of loops, biased by the angular-dependent elastic interaction between the loops. Patterns of spatially ordered loops form once the local density of loops produced by ion irradiation exceeds a critical threshold value.
Atomistic simulations were carried out to analyze the interaction between $< a>$ basal dislocations and precipitates in Mg-Al alloys and the associated strengthening mechanisms.
We present a methodology for the investigation of dislocation energetics in segregated alloys based on Monte Carlo simulations which equilibrate the topology and composition of the dislocation core and its surroundings. An environment-dependent partitioning of the system total energy into atomic contributions allows us to link the atomistic picture to continuum elasticity theory. The method is applied to extract core energies and radii of 60 degrees glide dislocations in segregated SiGe alloys which are inaccessible by other methods.

Using _in situ_ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we have observed nanometre scale dislocation loops formed when an ultra-high-purity tungsten foil is irradiated with a very low fluence of self-ions. Analysis of the TEM images has revealed the largest loops to be predominantly of prismatic 1/2<111> type and of vacancy character. The formation of such dislocation loops is surprising since isolated loops are expected to be highly mobile, and should escape from the foil. In this work we show that the observed size and number density of loops can be explained by the fact that the loops are _…
High entropy alloys are a class of materials with many significant improvements in terms of mechanical properties as compared to ``classical'' alloys. The corresponding structure-property relations are not yet entirely clear, but it is commonly believed that the good mechanical performance is strongly related to dislocation interactions with the complex energy landscape formed due to alloying. Although in-situ Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) allows high-resolution studies of the structure and dynamics of moving dislocations and makes the local obstacle/energy ``landscape'' directly visi…
We use three-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics simulations (DDD) to study the evolution of interfacial dislocation network (IDN) in particle-strengthened alloy systems subjected to constant stress at high temperatures. We have modified the dislocation mobility laws to incorporate the recovery of the dislocation network by the climb. The microstructure consists of uniformly distributed cuboidal inclusions embedded in the simulation box. Based on the systematic simulations of IDN formation as a function of applied stress for prescribed inter-particle spacing and glide-to-climb mobility r…
The critical resolved shear stress of an Al 4 wt. \% Cu alloy containing a homogeneous distribution of $θ''$ precipitates was determined by means of dislocation dynamics simulations. The size distribution, shape, orientation and volume fraction of the precipitates in the alloy were obtained from transmission electron microscopy observations while the parameters controlling the dislocation/precipitate interactions (elastic mismatch, transformation strains, dislocation mobility and cross-slip probability, etc.) were calculated from atomistic simulations. The precipitates were assumed to be eithe…
In traditional body-centered cubic (bcc) metals, the core properties of screw dislocations play a critical role in plastic deformation at low temperatures. Recently, much attention has been focused on refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs), which also possess bcc crystal structures. However, unlike face-centered cubic high-entropy alloys (HEAs), there have been far fewer investigations on bcc HEAs, specifically on the possible effects of chemical short-range order (SRO) in these multiple principal element alloys on dislocation mobility. Here, using density functional theory, we investigate the…
In this paper, we investigate plasticity in irradiated FeCrAl nanopillars using discrete dislocation dynamics simulations (DDD), with comparisons to transmission electron microscopic (TEM) in situ tensile tests of ion and neutron irradiated commercial FeCrAl alloy C35M. The effects of irradiation-induced defects, such as a/2 111 and a 100 type loops and composition fluctuations representative of phase separation in irradiated FeCrAl alloys, are investigated separately as well as superposed together in simulations. We explore the effects of defects on the stress-strain behavior, specifically yi…
In situ straining experiments were performed in a TEM on an equimolar CoCrFeMnNi (Cantor) high entropy alloy at room and cryogenic temperature. Perfect and partial dislocation activity were recorded in both cases. Twinning directly follows the development of partial dislocation shearing that has various origins (perfect dislocation splitting, anchoring). It is shown that, although twinning is more frequently observed at liquid nitrogen temperature, its prevalence depends mainly on crystal orientation. As a result, twinning and perfect dislocation plasticity are likely to occur jointly in rando…
The mechanisms of dislocation/precipitate interaction were studied by means of discrete dislocation dynamics within a multiscale approach. Simulations were carried out using the discrete continuous method in combination with a fast Fourier transform solver to compute the mechanical fields. The original simulation strategy was modified to include straight dislocation segments by means of the field dislocation mechanics method and was applied to simulate the interaction of an edge dislocation with a $θ'$ precipitate in an Al-Cu alloy. It was found that the elastic mismatch has a negligible influ…
The mechanisms of dislocation/precipitate interactions were analyzed in an Al-Cu alloy containing a homogeneous dispersion of $θ'$ precipitates by means of discrete dislocation dynamics simulations. The simulations were carried out within the framework of the discrete-continuous method and the precipitates were assumed to be impenetrable by dislocations. The main parameters that determine the dislocation/precipitate interactions (elastic mismatch, stress-free transformation strains, dislocation mobility and cross-slip rate) were obtained from atomistic simulations, while the size, shape, spati…
The propagation of dislocations in random crystals is evidenced to be governed by atomic-scale avalanches whose the extension in space and the time intermittency characterizingly diverge at the critical threshold. Our work is the very first atomic-scale evidence that the paradigm of second order phase transitions applies to the depinning of elastic interfaces in random media.
Interactions among dislocations and solute atoms are the basis of several important processes in metals plasticity. In body-centered cubic (bcc) metals and alloys, low-temperature plastic flow is controlled by screw dislocation glide, which is known to take place by the nucleation and sideward relaxation of kink pairs across two consecutive \emph{Peierls} valleys. In alloys, dislocations and solutes affect each other's kinetics via long-range stress field coupling and short-range inelastic interactions. It is known that in certain substitutional bcc alloys a transition from solute softening to…
Dislocation interactions at the crack nucleation site were investigated in near-alpha titanium alloy Ti-6242Si subjected to low cycle fatigue. Cyclic plastic strain in the alloy resulted in dislocation pile-ups in the primary alpha grains, nucleated at the boundaries between the primary alpha and the two-phase regions. These two phase regions provided a barrier to slip transfer between primary alpha grains. We suggest that crack nucleation occurred near the basal plane of primary alpha grains by the subsurface double-ended pile-up mechanism first conceived by Tanaka and Mura. Superjogs on the …
Energy efficiency is motivating the search for new high-temperature metals. Some new body-centered-cubic random multicomponent "high entropy alloys (HEAs)" based on refractory elements (Cr-Mo-Nb-Ta-V-W-Hf-Ti-Zr) possess exceptional strengths at high temperatures but the physical origins of this outstanding behavior are not known. Here we show, using integrated neutron-diffraction (ND), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and theory, that the high strength and strength retention of a NbTaVTi alloy and a new high-strength/low-density CrMoNbV alloy are attributable to edge d…
Alloying magnesium (Mg) with rare earth elements such as yttrium (Y) has been reported to activate the pyramidal <c + a> slip systems and improve the plasticity of Mg at room temperature. However, the origins of such dislocations and their dissociation mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigate these mechanisms using dispersion-inclusive density functional theory, in combination with molecular dynamics simulations. We find that <c + a> dislocations form more readily on the pyramidal I plane than on the pyramidal II plane in Mg. The addition of Y atoms in Mg facili…
The influence of initial heat treatment on anomalous Cr precipitation within high temperature solubility region in Fe-9Cr alloy has been investigated using positron lifetime studies. Air-quenched samples with pre-existing dislocations exhibited a distinct annealing stage in positron lifetime between 800 and 1100 K corresponding to Cr-precipitation. During this stage, Transmission Electron Microscopy showed fine precipitates of average size 4 nm, dispersed throughout the sample and from EDS analysis they are found to be Cr-enriched. The existence of dislocations is found to be responsible for C…
The mechanisms of dislocation/precipitate interaction as well as the critical resolved shear stress were determined as a function of temperature in a Mg-4 wt. % Zn alloy by means of micropillar compression tests. It was found that the mechanical properties were independent of the micropillar size when the cross-section was $>$ 3 x 3 $μ$m$^2$. Transmission electron microscopy showed that deformation involved a mixture of dislocation bowing around the precipitates and precipitate shearing. The initial yield strength was compatible with the predictions of the Orowan model for dislocation bowing a…
Understanding the mechanisms of plasticity in structural steels is essential for the operation of next-generation fusion reactors. Elemental composition, particularly the amount of Cr present, and irradiation can have separate and synergistic effects on the mechanical properties of ferritic/martensitic steels. The study of ion-irradiated FeCr alloys is useful for gaining a mechanistic understanding of irradiation damage in steels. Previous studies of ion-irradiated FeCr did not clearly distinguish between the nucleation of dislocations to initiate plasticity, and their propagation through the …
Active room temperature diffusion-less climb of the <a> edge dislocations in model Mg-Al alloys was observed using molecular dynamics simulations. Dislocations on prismatic and pyramidal I planes climb through the basal plane to overcome solute obstacles. This out-of-plane dislocation motion softens the high resistance pyramidal I glide and significantly reduces the anisotropy of dislocation mobility, and could help improve the ductility of Mg. The flow stress scales linearly with solute concentration, cAl. Dislocations climb predominantly in the negative direction, with climb angle on the ord…
Linear complexions are defect phases that form in the presence of dislocations and thus are promising for the direct control of plasticity. In this study, atomistic simulations are used to model the effect of linear complexions on dislocation-based mechanisms for plasticity, demonstrating unique behaviors that differ from classical dislocation glide mechanisms. Linear complexions impart higher resistance to the initiation and continuation of dislocation motion when compared to solid solution strengthening in all of the face-centered cubic alloys investigated here, with the exact strengthening …
A detailed study of the precipitation of the γ' (AlAg2) phase in undeformed aluminium-silver alloys has been conducted. Several previously unreported features were observed, including the formation of discrete three-dimensional assemblies comprised of 5-7 precipitates on faulted dislocation loops. The precipitates assemblies adopted a morphology approximating a tetrahedral bipyramidal assembly. The bounding defect of the stacking fault was found to control both the nucleation of additional precipitates which was responsible for the formation of the assembly structure and also the growth charac…
A relative contribution to irradiation hardening caused by dislocation loops and solute-rich precipitates is established for RPV steels of WWER-440 and WWER-1000 reactors, based on TEM measurements and mechanical testing at reactor operating temperature of 563 K. The pinning strength factors evaluated for loops and precipitates are shown to be much lower than those obtained for model alloys based on the room temperature testing as well as those evaluated by means of atomistic simulations in the temperature range of 300 to 600 K. This discrepancy is explained in the framework of a model of ther…
Quantifying the population of nanoscale defects that are formed in metals and alloys exposed to extreme radiation environments remains a pressing challenge in materials science. These defects both fundamentally alter material properties and seed long-timescale performance degradation, which often limits the lifespan of engineering systems. Unlike ceramic and semiconducting materials, these defects in metals and alloys are not spectroscopically active, forcing characterization to rely on indirect measurements from which the distribution of nanoscale defects may be inferred. In this mini-review,…
The interaction between edge dislocations and Guinier-Preston zones in an Al-Cu alloy was analyzed by means of atomistic simulations. The different thermodynamic functions that determine the features of these obstacles for the dislocation glide were computed using molecular statics, molecular dynamics and the nudged elastic band method. It was found that Guinier-Preston zones are sheared by dislocations and the rate at which dislocations overcome the precipitate is controlled by the activation energy, $ΔU$, in agreement with the postulates of the harmonic transition state theory. Moreover, the…

Body-centred cubic (BCC) transition metals tend to be brittle at low temperatures, posing significant challenges in processing and major concerns for damage tolerance. The brittleness is largely dictated by the screw dislocation core; the nature and control of which remain a puzzle after nearly a century. Here, we introduce a physics-based material index \{chi}, the energy difference between BCC and face-centred-cubic structures, that guides manipulation of core properties. The lattice friction and nucleation barrier have near-linear scaling with \{chi} and the core transforms from non-degener…
The interaction between edge basal dislocations and $β$-Mg$_{17}$Al$_{12}$ precipitates was studied using atomistic simulations. A strategy was developed to insert a lozenge-shaped Mg$_{17}$Al$_{12}$ precipitate with Burgers orientation relationship within the Mg matrix in an atomistic model ensuring that the matrix/precipitate interfaces were close to minimum energy configurations. It was found that the dislocation bypassed the precipitate by the formation of an Orowan loop, that entered the precipitate. Within the precipitate, the dislocation was not able to progress further until more dislo…
The Portevin-Le Chatelier(PLC) effect has been investigated by deforming Al-2.5%Mg alloy in the strain rate regime where simultaneously two types (type B and type A) of serrations appear in the stress strain curve. Our analysis reveal that in this strain rate regime the entire PLC dynamics for a particular strain rate experiment is governed by a single band which changes its character during the deformation.
We propose an explanation of anomalies observed in the behavior of deformation hardening of Invars. An extremely strong volume magnetostriction, typical of Invars, results in an enhancement of the exchange contribution to the energy of the dislocation system by about three orders of magnitude with respect to its value in conventional ferromagnetics. Both the self energy of individual dislocations and the interaction between them, determined usually only by the elastic deformation, in Invars is strongly diminished by the contribution of the exchange energy. This fact explains a strong suppressi…
High-entropy alloys (HEAs) were presumed to have a configurational entropy as high as that of an ideally mixed solid solution (SS) of multiple elements in near-equal proportions. However, enthalpic interactions inevitably render such chemically disordered SSs rare and metastable, except at very high temperatures. Here we highlight a structural feature that sets these concentrated SSs apart from traditional solvent-solute ones: the HEAs possess a wide variety of (local) chemical ordering (LCO). Our atomistic simulations employing an empirical interatomic potential for NiCoCr reveal that the LCO…
The microstructural parameters like the average domain size, effective domain size at a particular crystallographic direction and microstrain within the domains of titanium and Ti-5%Ta-2%Nb, irradiated with 116 MeV O5+ ion, have been characterized as a function of dose by X-Ray Diffraction Line Profile Analysis using different model based approaches. Dislocation Density and stacking fault probabilities have also been estimated from the analysis. The analysis revealed that there was a significant decrease of the average domain size with dose as compared to the unirradiated sample. The estimated…
Dislocation velocities and mobilities are studied by Molecular Dynamics simulations for edge and screw dislocations in pure aluminum and nickel, and edge dislocations in Al-2.5%Mg and Al-5.0%Mg random substitutional alloys using EAM potentials. In the pure materials, the velocities of all dislocations are close to linear with the ratio of (applied stress)/(temperature) at low velocities, consistent with phonon drag models and quantitative agreement with experiment is obtained for the mobility in Al. At higher velocities, different behavior is observed. The edge dislocation velocity remains dep…
The exceptional combination of strength and ductility in multi-component alloys is often attributed to the interaction of dislocations with the various solute atoms in the alloy. To study these effects on the mechanical properties of such alloys there is a need to develop a modeling framework capable of quantifying the effect of these solutes on the evolution of dislocation networks. Large scale three-dimensional (3D) Discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulations can provide access to such studies but to date no relevant approaches are available that aim for a complete representation of real…
High entropy alloys (HEAs) are single phase crystals that consist of random solid solutions of multiple elements in approximately equal proportions. This class of novel materials have exhibited superb mechanical properties, such as high strength combined with other desired features. The strength of crystalline materials is associated with the motion of dislocations. In this paper, we derive a stochastic continuum model based on the Peierls-Nabarro framework for inter-layer dislocations in a bilayer HEA from an atomistic model that incorporates the atomic level randomness. We use asymptotic ana…
In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to investigate elementary dislocation properties in a Co-free high entropy (HEA) model alloy ($Cr_{15}Fe_{46}Mn_{17}Ni_{22}$ at. %) in comparison with a model alloy representative of Austenitic Stainless Steel (ASS) ($Cr_{20}Fe_{70}Ni_{10}$ at. %). Recently developed embedded-atom method (EAM) potentials were used to describe the atomic interactions in the alloys. Molecular Statics (MS) calculations were used to study the dislocation properties in terms of local stacking fault energy (SFE), dissociation distance while MD was used to i…
Dislocations in single-phase concentrated random alloys, including high- entropy alloys (HEAs), repeatedly encounter pinning during glide, resulting in jerky dislocation motion. While solute-dislocation interaction is well understood in conventional alloys, the origin of individual pinning points in concentrated random alloys is a matter of debate. In this work, we investigate the origin of dislocation pinning in the CoCrFeMnNi HEA. In- situ transmission electron microscopy studies reveal wavy dislocation lines and a jagged glide motion under external loading, even though no segregation or clu…
Emerging hierarchical dislocation structures: Insights from scanning electron microscopy-electron backscatter diffraction in situ tensile testing and multifractal analysis
Mn enrichment at dislocations in Fe-Mn alloys due to segregation and spinodal decomposition along the dislocation line is studied via modeling and experimental characterization. To model these phenomena, both finite-deformation microscopic phase-field chemomechanics (MPFCM) and Monte Carlo molecular dynamics (MCMD) are employed. MPFCM calibration is carried out with the same Fe-Mn MEAM-based potential used in MCMD, as well as CALPHAD data. Simulation results for Mn segregation to, and spinodal decomposition along, straight screw and edge dislocations as well as dislocation loops, are compared …
The dislocation structures appearing in highly mis-oriented soft/hard grain pairs in near-alpha titanium alloy Ti6242Si were examined with and without the application of load holds (dwell) during fatigue. Dislocation pile-up in a soft grain resulted in internal stresses in an adjacent hard grain which could be relaxed by dislocation multiplication at localized Frank-Read sources, a process assisted by the provision of a relaxation time during a load hold. The rate of this process is suggested to be controlled by <c+a> pyramidal cross-slip and <a> basal junction formation. A high density of <a>…
The current interest in compositionally complex alloys including so called high entropy alloys has caused renewed interest in the general problem of solute hardening. It has been suggested that this problem can be addressed by treating the alloy as an effective medium containing a random distribution of dilatation and compression centers representing the volumetric misfit of atoms of different species. The mean square stresses arising from such a random distribution can be calculated analytically, their spatial correlations are strongly anisotropic and exhibit long-range tails with third-order…
The precipitation microstructure of the γ' (AlAg2) intermetallic phase has been examined in aluminium-silver-copper alloys. The microstructure developed in an Al-0.90at.%Ag-0.90at.%Cu alloy was significantly different from that reported for binary Al-Ag alloys. The orientation relationship between the matrix and precipitate was unchanged; however, the γ' phase formed as aggregates with a two-dimensional open assemblies. Each such assembly contained two variants of the γ' phase alternately arranged to form a faceted elliptical unit. The θ' (Al2Cu) phase formed on these assemblies after further …
Several transition metals were examined to evaluate their potential for improving the ductility of tungsten. The dislocation core structure and Peierls stress and barrier of $1/2<111>$ screw dislocations in binary tungsten-transition metal alloys (W$_{1-x}$TM$_{x}$) were investigated using first principles electronic structure calculations. The periodic quadrupole approach was applied to model the structure of $1/2<111>$ dislocation. Alloying with transition metals was modeled using the virtual crystal approximation and the applicability of this approach was assessed by calculating the equilib…
Zirconium based alloys have been irradiated with 11 and 15 MeV proton and 116 MeV oxygen ions at different doses. The changes in the microstructure have been studied for the ion irradiated alloys as a function of dose using X-Ray Diffraction Line Profile Analysis (XRDLPA) based on the whole powder pattern fitting technique. It was observed that the microstructural parameters like domain size, microstrain within the domain, dislocation density did not change significantly with the increase in dose for proton irradiated samples. A clear change was noticed in these microstructural parameters as a…
