We propose a new least squares finite element method to solve the Stokes problem with two sequential steps. The approximation spaces are constructed by patch reconstruction with one unknown per element. For the first step, we reconstruct an approximation space consisting of piecewise curl-free polynomials with zero trace. By this space, we minimize a least squaresfunctional toobtain thenumericalapproximationstothe gradientof thevelocityand the pressure. In the second step, we minimize another least squares functional to give the solution to the velocity in the reconstructed piecewise divergence-free space. We derive error estimates for all unknowns under L2 norms and energy norms. Numerical results in two dimensions and three dimensions verify the convergence rates and demonstrate the great flexibility of our method.
A discontinuous Galerkin pressure correction numerical method for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is formulated and analyzed. We prove unconditional stability of the propose scheme. Convergence of the discrete velocity is established by deriving a priori error estimates. Numerical results verify the convergence rates.
In the present paper, we prove convergence rates for the Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) approximation, proposed in Part I of the paper, for systems of $p$-Navier-Stokes type and $p$-Stokes type with $p\in (2,\infty)$. The convergence rates are optimal for linear ansatz functions. The results are supported by numerical experiments.
The pressure correction scheme is combined with interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. Optimal error estimates are derived for the velocity in the L$^2$ norm in time and in space. Error bounds for the discrete time derivative of the velocity and for the pressure are also established.
We present a strongly conservative and pressure-robust hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled time-dependent Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem. We show existence and uniqueness of a solution and present an optimal a priori error analysis for the fully discrete problem when using Backward Euler time stepping. The theoretical results are verified by numerical examples.
In the present paper, we prove convergence rates for the pressure of the Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) approximation, proposed in Part I of the paper, of systems of $p$-Navier-Stokes type and $p$-Stokes type with $p\in (2,\infty)$. The results are supported by numerical experiments.
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations require the positivity of thermodynamic quantities in order to guarantee their well-posedness. In this work, we introduce a positivity limiting strategy for entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin discretizations constructed by blending high order solutions with a low order positivity-preserving discretization. The proposed low order discretization is semi-discretely entropy stable, and the proposed limiting strategy is positivity preserving for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes…
In the present paper, we propose a Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) approximation for fully non-homogeneous systems of $p$-Navier-Stokes type. On the basis of the primal formulation, we prove well-posedness, stability (a priori estimates), and weak convergence of the method. To this end, we propose a new DG discretization of the convective term and develop an abstract non-conforming theory of pseudo-monotonicity, which is applied to our problem. We also use our approach to treat the $p$-Stokes problem.
Entropy stable schemes ensure that physically meaningful numerical solutions also satisfy a semi-discrete entropy inequality under appropriate boundary conditions. In this work, we describe a discretization of viscous terms in the compressible Navier-Stokes equations which enables a simple and explicit imposition of entropy stable no-slip (adiabatic and isothermal) and reflective (symmetry) wall boundary conditions for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations. Numerical results confirm the robustness and accuracy of the proposed approaches.
Discontinuous Galerkin methods of higher order are applied as temporal discretizations for the transient Navier--Stokes equations. The spatial discretization based on inf-sup stable pairs of finite element spaces is stabilised using a one-level local projection stabilisation method. Optimal error bounds for the velocity with constants independent of the viscosity parameter are obtained for the semi-discrete case. For the fully discrete case, error estimates for both velocity and pressure are given. Numerical results support the theoretical predictions.
A new discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Stokes equations is developed in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. This method employs discontinuous polynomials for both velocity and pressure on general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. Most finite element methods with discontinuous approximation have one or more stabilizing terms for velocity and for pressure to guarantee stability and convergence. This new finite element method has the standard conforming finite element formulation, without any velocity or pressure stabilizers. Optimal-order error estimates are established for…
In this paper, for the Stokes eigenvalue problem in $d$-dimensional case $(d=2,3)$, we present an a posteriori error estimate of residual type of the mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element method using $P_{k}-P_{k-1}$ element $(k\geq 1)$. We give the a posteriori error estimators for approximate eigenpairs, prove their reliability and efficiency for eigenfunctions, and also analyze their reliability for eigenvalues. We implement adaptive calculation, and the numerical results confirm our theoretical predictions and show that our method can achieve the optimal convergence order $O(dof^{-2k…

In this paper we propose a pressure robust staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Stokes equations on general polygonal meshes by using piecewise constant approximations. We modify the right hand side of the body force in the discrete formulation by exploiting divergence preserving velocity reconstruction operator, which is the crux for pressure independent velocity error estimates. The optimal convergence for velocity gradient, velocity and pressure are proved. In addition, we are able to prove the superconvergence of velocity approximation by the incorporation of divergence preservi…
A discontinuous viscosity coefficient makes the jump conditions of the velocity and normal stress coupled together, which brings great challenges to some commonly used numerical methods to obtain accurate solutions. To overcome the difficulties, a kernel free boundary integral (KFBI) method combined with a modified marker-and-cell (MAC) scheme is developed to solve the two-phase Stokes problems with discontinuous viscosity. The main idea is to reformulate the two-phase Stokes problem into a single-fluid Stokes problem by using boundary integral equations and then evaluate the boundary integral…

We present an optimal preconditioner for the exactly divergence-free discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of Cockburn, Kanschat, and Schötzau [J. Sci. Comput., 31 (2007), pp. 61--73] and Wang and Ye [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 45 (2007), pp. 1269--1286] for the Stokes problem. This DG method uses finite elements that use an $H({\rm div})$-conforming basis, thereby significantly complicating its solution by iterative methods. Several preconditioners for this Stokes discretization have been developed, but each is based on specialized solvers or decompositions, and do not offer a clear framework…
We propose a numerical method to solve the Monge-Ampere equation which admits a classical convex solution. The Monge-Ampere equation is reformulated into an equivalent first-order system. We adopt a novel reconstructed discontinuous approximation space which consists of piecewise irrotational polynomials. This space allows us to solve the first order system in two sequential steps. In the first step, we solve a nonlinear system to obtain the approximation to the gradient. A Newton iteration is adopted to handle the nonlinearity in the system. The approximation to the primitive variable is obta…
We present a stability analysis of the Discontinuous Galerkin method on polygonal and polyhedral meshes (PolyDG) for the Stokes problem. In particular, we analyze the discrete inf-sup condition for different choices of the polynomial approximation order of the velocity and pressure approximation spaces. To this aim, we employ a generalized inf-sup condition with a pressure stabilization term. We also prove a priori hp-version error estimates in suitable norms. We numerically check the behaviour of the inf-sup constant and the order of convergence with respect to the mesh configuration, the mes…
The present work focuses on the geometric parametrization and the reduced order modeling of the Stokes equation. We discuss the concept of a parametrized geometry and its application within a reduced order modeling technique. The full order model is based on the discontinuous Galerkin method with an interior penalty formulation. We introduce the broken Sobolev spaces as well as the weak formulation required for an affine parameter dependency. The operators are transformed from a fixed domain to a parameter dependent domain using the affine parameter dependency. The proper orthogonal decomposit…

In this paper, we propose a unified numerical framework for the time-dependent incompressible Navier--Stokes equation which yields the $H^1$-, $H(\text{div})$-conforming, and discontinuous Galerkin methods with the use of different viscous stress tensors and penalty terms for pressure robustness. Under minimum assumption on Galerkin spaces, the semi- and fully-discrete stability is proved when a family of implicit Runge--Kutta methods are used for time discretization. Furthermore, we present a unified discussion on the penalty term. Numerical experiments are presented to compare our schemes wi…
We present a provably stable discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with artificial compressibility and variable density. Stability proofs, which include boundary conditions, that follow a continuous entropy analysis are provided. We define a mathematical entropy function that combines the traditional kinetic energy and an additional energy term for the artificial compressiblity, and derive its associated entropy conservation law. The latter allows us to construct a provably stable split-form nodal Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) approximation…
In this paper, we apply discontinuous finite element Galerkin method to the time-dependent $2D$ incompressible Navier-Stokes model. We derive optimal error estimates in $L^\infty(\textbf{L}^2)$-norm for the velocity and in $L^\infty(L^2)$-norm for the pressure with the initial data $\textbf{u}_0\in \textbf{H}_0^1\cap \textbf{H}^2$ and the source function $\textbf{f}$ in $L^\infty(\textbf{L}^2)$ space. These estimates are established with the help of a new $L^2$-projection and modified Stokes operator on appropriate broken Sobolev space and with standard parabolic or elliptic duality arguments.…
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods have a long history in computational physics and engineering to approximate solutions of partial differential equations due to their high-order accuracy and geometric flexibility. However, DG is not perfect and there remain some issues. Concerning robustness, DG has undergone an extensive transformation over the past seven years into its modern form that provides statements on solution boundedness for linear and nonlinear problems. This chapter takes a constructive approach to introduce a modern incarnation of the DG spectral element method for the compressi…
