With $\{ξ_i\}_{i\ge 0}$ being a centered stationary Gaussian sequence with non-negative correlation function $ρ(i):=\mathbb{E}[ ξ_0ξ_i]$ and $\{σ(i)\}_{i\ge 1}$ a sequence of positive reals, we study the asymptotics of the persistence probability of the weighted sum $\sum_{i=1}^\ell σ(i) ξ_i$, $\ell\ge 1$. For summable correlations $ρ$, we show that the persistence exponent is universal. On the contrary, for non-summable $ρ$, even for polynomial weight functions $σ(i)\sim i^p$ the persistence exponent depends on the rate of decay of the correlations (encoded by a parameter $H$) and on the polynomial rate $p$ of $σ$. In this case, we show existence of the persistence exponent $θ(H,p)$ and study its properties as a function of $(p,H)$. During the course of our proofs, we develop several tools for dealing with exit problems for Gaussian processes with non-negative correlations -- e.g.\ a continuity result for persistence exponents and a necessary and sufficient criterion for the persistence exponent to be zero -- that might be of independent interest.
We study the persistence probability for some two-sided discrete-time Gaussian sequences that are discrete-time analogs of fractional Brownian motion and integrated fractional Brownian motion, respectively. Our results extend the corresponding ones in continuous-time in [Molchan, Commun. Math. Phys., 1999] and [Molchen, J. Stat. Phys., 2017] to a wide class of discrete-time processes.
Lower bounds for persistence probabilities of stationary Gaussian processes in discrete time are obtained under various conditions on the spectral measure of the process. Examples are given to show that the persistence probability can decay faster than exponentially. It is shown that if the spectral measure is not singular, then the exponent in the persistence probability cannot grow faster than quadratically. An example that appears (from numerical evidence) to achieve this lower bound is presented.
Let p_n denote the persistence probability that the first n iterated partial sums of integrable, zero-mean, i.i.d. random variables X_k, are negative. We show that p_n is bounded above up to universal constant by the square root of the expected absolute value of the empirical average of {X_k}. A converse bound holds whenever P(-X_1>t) is up to constant exp(-b t) for some b>0 or when P(-X_1>t) decays super-exponentially in t. Consequently, for such random variables we have that p_n decays as n^{-1/4} if X_1 has finite second moment. In contrast, we show that for any 0 < c < 1/4 there exist inte…
We consider the sum of two self-similar centred Gaussian processes with different self-similarity indices. Under non-negativity assumptions of covariance functions and some further minor conditions, we show that the asymptotic behaviour of the persistence probability of the sum is the same as for the single process with the greater self-similarity index. In particular, this covers the mixed fractional Brownian motion introduced in Cheridito (2001) and shows that the corresponding persistence probability decays asymptotically polynomially with persistence exponent $1-\max(1/2,H),$ where $H$ is …
We prove that an integrated simple random walk, where random walk and integrated random walk are conditioned to return to zero, has asymptotic probability $n^{-1/2}$ to stay positive. This question is motivated by so-called random polymer models and proves a conjecture by Caravenna and Deuschel.
The problem is a log-asymptotics of the probability that the Integrated fractional Brownian motion of index 0<H<1 does not exceed a fixed level during long time. For the growing time interval (0,T) the hypothetical log-asymptotics is (H(H-1)+o(1))Log T. In support of the hypothesis, we update our earlier estimates of the probability and give analytical proofs.
This article deals with the asymptotic behaviour as $t\to +\infty$ of the survival function $P[T > t],$ where $T$ is the first passage time above a non negative level of a random process starting from zero. In many cases of physical significance, the behaviour is of the type $P[T > t]=t^{-θ+ o(1)}$ for a known or unknown positive parameter $θ$ which is called a persistence exponent. The problem is well understood for random walks or Lévy processes but becomes more difficult for integrals of such processes, which are more related to physics. We survey recent results and open problems in this fi…
Let $S_n^{(2)}$ denote the iterated partial sums. That is, $S_n^{(2)}=S_1+S_2+ ... +S_n$, where $S_i=X_1+X_2+ ... s+X_i$. Assuming $X_1, X_2,....,X_n$ are integrable, zero-mean, i.i.d. random variables, we show that the persistence probabilities $$p_n^{(2)}:=\PP(\max_{1\le i \le n}S_i^{(2)}< 0) \le c\sqrt{\frac{\EE|S_{n+1}|}{(n+1)\EE|X_1|}},$$ with $c \le 6 \sqrt{30}$ (and $c=2$ whenever $X_1$ is symmetric). The converse inequality holds whenever the non-zero $\min(-X_1,0)$ is bounded or when it has only finite third moment and in addition $X_1$ is squared integrable. Furthermore, $p_n^{(2)}\a…
We provide exact asymptotics for the tail probabilities $\mathbb{P} \{S_{n,r} > x\}$ as $x \to \infty$, for fix $n$, where $S_{n,r}$ is the $r$-trimmed partial sum of i.i.d. St. Petersburg random variables. In particular, we prove that although the St. Petersburg distribution is only O-subexponential, the subexponential property almost holds. We also determine the exact tail behavior of the $r$-trimmed limits.
We obtain some optimal inequalities on tail probabilities for sums of independent bounded random variables. Our main result completes an upper bound on tail probabilities due to Talagrand by giving a one-term asymptotic expansion for large deviations. This result can also be regarded as sharp large deviations of types of Cramér and Bahadur-Ranga Rao.
We consider sums of increments given by a functional of a stationary Markov chain. Letting $T$ be the first return time of the partial sums process to $(-\infty,0]$, under general assumptions, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the survival probability, $\mathbb{P}(T\ge t)\sim Ct^{-1/2}$ for an explicit constant $C$. Our analysis is based on a connection between the survival probability and the running maximum of the time-reversed process, and relies on a functional central limit theorem for Markov chains. Our result extends the classic theorem of Sparre Anderson on sums of mean zero and …
We study persistence probabilities of Hermite processes. As a tool, we derive a general decorrelation inequality for the Rosenblatt process, which is reminiscent of Slepian's lemma for Gaussian processes or the FKG inequality and which may be of independent interest. This allows to compute the persistence exponent for the Rosenblatt process. For general Hermite processes, we derive upper and lower bounds for the persistence probabilites with the conjectured persistence exponent, but with non-matching boundaries.
We study the persistence probability for some discrete-time, time-reversible processes. In particular, we deduce the persistence exponent in a number of examples: first, we deal with random walks in random sceneries (RWRS) in any dimension with Gaussian scenery. Second, we deal with sums of stationary Gaussian sequences with correlations exhibiting long-range dependence. Apart from the persistence probability we deal with the position of the maximum and the time spent on the positive half-axis by the process.
We investigate asymptotic behaviour of probabilities of large deviations for normalized combinatorial sums. We find a zone in which these probabilities are equivalent to the tail of the standard normal law. Our conditions are similar to the classical Bernstein condition. The range of the zone of the normal convergence can be of power order.
Let $\{X_1, X_2, ... \}$ be a sequence of dependent heavy-tailed random variables with distributions $F_1, F_2,...$ on $(-\infty,\infty)$, and let $τ$ be a nonnegative integer-valued random variable independent of the sequence $\{X_k, k \ge 1\}$. In this framework, we study the asymptotic behavior of the tail probabilities of the quantities $X_{(n)} = \max_{1\le k \le n} X_k$, $S_n =\sum_{k=1}^n X_k$ and $S_{(n)}=\max_{1\le k\le n} S_k$ for $n>1$, and for those of their randomized versions $X_{(τ)}$, $S_τ$ and $S_{(τ)}$. We also consider applications of the results obtained to some commonly-us…
Several classical results on boundary crossing probabilities of Brownian motion and random walks are extended to asymptotically Gaussian random fields, which include sums of i.i.d. random variables with multidimensional indices, multivariate empirical processes, and scan statistics in change-point and signal detection as special cases. Some key ingredients in these extensions are moderate deviation approximations to marginal tail probabilities and weak convergence of the conditional distributions of certain ``clumps'' around high-level crossings. We also discuss how these results are related t…
Let $S_n$ be the sum of independent random variables with distribution $F$. Under the assumption that $-\log(1-F(x))$ is slowly varying, conditions for $$ \lim_{n\to\infty}\sup_{s\ge t_n}\left|{P[S_n>s]\over n(1-F(s))}-1\right| =0 $$ are given. These conditions extend and strengthen a series of previous results. Additionally, a connection with subexponential distributions is demonstrated. That is, $F$ is subexponential if and only if the condition above holds for some $t_n$ and $$ \lim_{t\to\infty}{1-F(t+x)\over 1-F(t)} = 1 \quad\text{for each real $x$.}$$
Let $ξ_1, ξ_2, \dots$ be i.i.d. non-negative random variables whose tail varies regularly with index $-1$, let $S_n$ be the sum and $M_n$ the largest of the first $n$ values. We clarify for which sequences $x_n\to\infty$ we have $\mathbb P(S_n \ge x_n) \sim \mathbb P(M_n \ge x_n)$ as $n\to\infty$. Outside this regime, the typical size of $S_n$ conditioned on exceeding $x_n$ is not completely determined by the largest summand and we provide an appropriate correction term which involves the integrated tail of $ξ_1$.
We study the persistence probability for processes with stationary increments. Our results apply to a number of examples: sums of stationary correlated random variables whose scaling limit is fractional Brownian motion, random walks in random sceneries, random processes in Brownian scenery, and the Matheron-de Marsily model in Z^2 with random orientations of the horizontal layers. Using a new approach, strongly related to the study of the range, we obtain an upper bound of optimal order in the general case and improved lower bounds (compared to previous literature) for many processes.
The approach of Kleitman (1970) and Kanter (1976) to multivariate concentration function inequalities is generalized in order to obtain for deviation probabilities of sums of independent symmetric random variables a lower bound depending only on deviation probabilities of the terms of the sum. This bound is optimal up to discretization effects, improves on a result of Nagaev (2001), and complements the comparison theorems of Birnbaum (1948) and Pruss (1997). Birnbaum's theorem for unimodal random variables is extended to the lattice case.
Two old conjectures from problem sections, one of which from SIAM Review, concern the question of finding distributions that maximize P(Sn <= t), where Sn is the sum of i.i.d. random variables X1, ..., Xn on the interval [0,1], satisfying E[X1]=m. In this paper a Lagrange multiplier technique is applied to this problem, yielding necessary conditions for distributions to be extremal, for arbitrary n. For n=2, a complete solution is derived from them: extremal distributions are discrete and have one of the following supports, depending on m and t: {0,t}, {t-1,1}, {t/2,1}, or {0,t,1}. These resul…
Let X_1,X_2,... be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables, and put S_n=X_1+...+X_n. Under some conditions on the positive sequence tau_n and the positive increasing sequence a_n, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of sum_{n=1}^infty tau_n P(|S_n|>t a_n) for all t>0, generalizing Baum and Katz's (1965) generalization of the Hsu-Robbins-Erdos (1947, 1949) law of large numbers, also allowing us to characterize the convergence of the above series in the case where tau_n=1/n and a_n=(n log n)^{1/2} for n>1, thereby answering a question of…
In this paper, we investigate the precise local large deviation probabilities for random sums of independent real-valued random variables with a common distribution $F$, where $F(x+Δ)=F((x, x+T])$ is an $\mathcal{O}$-regularly varying function for some fixed constant $T>0$(finite or infinite). We also obtain some results on precise local large deviation probabilities for the claim surplus process of generalized risk models in which the premium income until time $t$ is simply assumed to be a nondecreasing and nonnegative stochastic process. In particular, the results we obtained are also valid …
Let $X_1,X_2,...$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables, and put $S_n=X_1+...+X_n$. Under some conditions on the positive sequence $τ_n$ and the positive increasing sequence $a_n$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of $\sum_{n=1}^\infty τ_n P(|S_n|\ge εa_n)$ for all $ε>0$, generalizing Baum and Katz's (1965) generalization of the Hsu-Robbins-Erdos (1947, 1949) law of large numbers, also allowing us to characterize the convergence of the above series in the case where $τ_n=n^{-1}$ and $a_n=(n\log n)^{1/2}$ for $n\ge 2$, thereby a…
The extremal tail probabilities of moving sums in a marked Poisson random field is examined here. These sums are computed by adding up the weighted occurrences of events lying within a scanning set of fixed shape and size. Change of measure and analysis of local random fields are used to provide tail probabilities. The asymptotic constants are initially expressed in a form that seems hard to evaluate and do not seem to provide any additional information on the properties of the constants. A more sophisticated approach is then undertaken giving rise to an expression that is not only neater but …
We obtain decay rates of probabilities of tails of polynomials in several independent random variables with heavy tails and derive stable limit theorems for nonconventional sums of such polynomials
Known Bernstein-type upper bounds on the tail probabilities for sums of independent zero-mean sub-exponential random variables are improved in several ways at once. The new upper bounds have a certain optimality property.
Let $X_1$ and $N\ge 0$ be integer valued power law random variables. For a randomly stopped sum $S_N=X_1+\cdots+X_N$ of independent and identically distributed copies of $X_1$ we establish a first order asymptotics of the local probabilities $P(S_N=t)$ as $t\to+\infty$. Using this result we show the $k^{-δ}$, $0\le δ\le 1$ scaling of the local clustering coefficient (of a randomly selected vertex of degree $k$) in a power law affiliation network.
We establish exact formulae for the persistence probabilities of an AR(1) sequence with symmetric uniform innovations in terms of certain families of polynomials, most notably a family introduced by Mallows and Riordan as enumerators of finite labeled trees when ordered by inversions. The connection of these polynomials with the volumes of certain polytopes is also discussed. Two further results provide factorizations of general AR(1) models, one for negative drifts with continuous innovations, and one for positive drifts with continuous and symmetric innovations. The second factorization exte…
We study the large deviation probabilities of infinite weighted sums of independent random variables that have stretched exponential tails. This generalizes Kiesel and Stadtmüller (2000), who study the same objects under the assumption of finite exponential moments, and Gantert et al.\ (2014), who study finite weighted sums with stretched exponential tails.
For AR(1)-processes $X_n=ρX_{n-1}+ξ_n$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, where $ρ\in\mathbb{R}$ and $(ξ_i)_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ is an i.i.d. sequence of random variables, we study the persistence probabilities $\mathbb{P}(X_0\ge 0,\dots, X_N\ge 0)$ for $N\to\infty$. For a wide class of Markov processes a recent result [Aurzada, Mukherjee, Zeitouni; arXiv:1703.06447; 2017] shows that these probabilities decrease exponentially fast and that the rate of decay can be identified as an eigenvalue of some integral operator. We discuss a perturbation technique to determine a series expansion of the eigenvalue in the pa…
Suppose the auto-correlations of real-valued, centered Gaussian process $Z(\cdot)$ are non-negative and decay as $ρ(|s-t|)$ for some $ρ(\cdot)$ regularly varying at infinity of order $-α\in [-1,0)$. With $I_ρ(t)=\int_0^t ρ(s)ds$ its primitive, we show that the persistence probabilities decay rate of $ -\log\mathbb{P}(\sup_{t \in [0,T]}\{Z(t)\}<0)$ is precisely of order $(T/I_ρ(T)) \log I_ρ(T)$, thereby closing the gap between the lower and upper bounds of \cite{NR}, which stood as such for over fifty years. We demonstrate its usefulness by sharpening recent results of \cite{Sak} about the depe…
For the renormalised sums of the random $\pm 1$-colouring of the connected components of $\mathbb Z$ generated by the coalescing renewal processes in the "power law Pólya's urn" of Hammond and Sheffield we prove functional convergence towards fractional Brownian motion, closing a gap in the tightness argument of their paper. In addition, in the regime of the strong renewal theorem we gain insights into the coalescing renewal processes in the Hammond-Sheffield urn (such as the asymptotic depth of most recent common ancestors) and are able to control the coalescence probabilities of two, three a…
In the framework of dependent risks it is a crucial task for risk management purposes to quantify the probability that the aggregated risk exceeds some large value u. Motivated by Asmussen et al. (2011) in this paper we introduce a modified Asmussen-Kroese estimator for simulation of the rare event that the aggregated risk exceeds u. We show that in the framework of log-Gaussian risks our novel estimator has the best possible performance. For the more general class of log-elliptical risks with marginal distributions in the Gumbel max-domain of attraction we propose a modified Rojas-Nandayapa e…
We show that $\mathbb{P} ( \ell_X(0,T] \leq 1)=(c_X+o(1))T^{-(1-H)}$, where $\ell_X$ is the local time measure at $0$ of any recurrent $H$-self-similar real-valued process $X$ with stationary increments that admits a sufficiently regular local time and $c_X$ is some constant depending only on $X$. A special case is the Gaussian setting, i.e. when the underlying process is fractional Brownian motion, in which our result settles a conjecture by Molchan [Commun. Math. Phys. 205, 97-111 (1999)] who obtained the upper bound $1-H$ on the decay exponent of $\mathbb{P} ( \ell_X(0,T] \leq 1)$. Our appr…
We consider the small deviation probabilities (SDP) for sums of stationary Gaussian sequences. For the cases of constant boundaries and boundaries tending to zero, we obtain quite general results. For the case of the boundaries tending to infinity, we focus our attention on the discrete analogs of the fractional Brownian motion (FBM). It turns out that the lower bounds for the SDP can be transferred from the well studied FBM caseto the discrete time setting under the usual assumptions that imply weak convergence while the transfer of the corresponding upper bounds necessarily requires a deeper…
We show sharp bounds for probabilities of large deviations for sums of independent random variables satisfying Bernstein's condition. One such bound is very close to the tail of the standard Gaussian law in certain case; other bounds improve the inequalities of Bennett and Hoeffding by adding missing factors in the spirit of Talagrand (1995). We also complete Talagrand's inequality by giving a lower bound of the same form, leading to an equality. As a consequence, we obtain large deviation expansions similar to those of Cramér (1938), Bahadur-Rao (1960) and Sakhanenko (1991). We also show that…
Asymptotics deviation probabilities of the sum S n = X 1 + $\times$ $\times$ $\times$ + X n of independent and identically distributed real-valued random variables have been extensively investigated, in particular when X 1 is not exponentially integrable. For instance, A.V. Nagaev formulated exact asymptotics results for P(S n > x n) when x n > n 1/2 (see, [13, 14]). In this paper, we derive rough asymptotics results (at logarithmic scale) with shorter proofs relying on classical tools of large deviation theory and expliciting the rate function at the transition.
This paper studies the tail probability of weighted sums of the form $\sum_{i=1}^n c_i X_i$, where random variables $X_i$'s are either independent or pairwise quasi-asymptotical independent with heavy tails. Using $h$-insensitive function, the uniform asymptotic equivalence of the tail probabilities of $\sum_{i=1}^n c_iX_i$, $\max_{1\le k\le n}\sum_{i=1}^k c_iX_i$ and $\sum_{i=1}^n c_iX_i^+$ is established, where $X_i$'s are independent and follow the long-tailed distribution, and $c_i$'s take value in a broad interval. Some further uniform asymptotic results for the weighted sums of $X_i$'s w…
In this paper we prove large deviations results for partial sums constructed from the solution to a stochastic recurrence equation. We assume Kesten's condition [Acta Math. 131 (1973) 207-248] under which the solution of the stochastic recurrence equation has a marginal distribution with power law tails, while the noise sequence of the equations can have light tails. The results of the paper are analogs to those obtained by A. V. Nagaev [Theory Probab. Appl. 14 (1969) 51-64; 193-208] and S. V. Nagaev [Ann. Probab. 7 (1979) 745-789] in the case of partial sums of i.i.d. random variables. In the…
Let $\{\bf \mathcal{Z}_n:n\geq 1\}$ be a sequence of i.i.d. random probability measures. Independently, for each $n\geq 1$, let $(X_{n1},\ldots, X_{nn})$ be a random vector of positive random variables that add up to one. This paper studies the large deviation principles for the randomly weighted sum $\sum_{i=1}^{n} X_{ni} \mathcal{Z}_i$. In the case of finite Dirichlet weighted sum of Dirac measures, we obtain an explicit form for the rate function. It provides a new measurement of divergence between probabilities. As applications, we obtain the large deviation principles for a class of rando…
Small ball inequalities have been extensively studied in the setting of Gaussian processes and associated Banach or Hilbert spaces. In this paper, we focus on studying small ball probabilities for sums or differences of independent, identically distributed random elements taking values in very general sets. Depending on the setting--abelian or nonabelian groups, or vector spaces, or Banach spaces--we provide a collection of inequalities relating different small ball probabilities that are sharp in many cases of interest. We prove these distribution-free probabilistic inequalities by showing th…
