Asymptotics deviation probabilities of the sum S n = X 1 + $\times$ $\times$ $\times$ + X n of independent and identically distributed real-valued random variables have been extensively investigated, in particular when X 1 is not exponentially integrable. For instance, A.V. Nagaev formulated exact asymptotics results for P(S n > x n) when x n > n 1/2 (see, [13, 14]). In this paper, we derive rough asymptotics results (at logarithmic scale) with shorter proofs relying on classical tools of large deviation theory and expliciting the rate function at the transition.
We prove abstract bounds on the Wasserstein and Kolmogorov distances between non-randomly centered random sums of real i.i.d. random variables with a finite third moment and the standard normal distribution. Except for the case of mean zero summands, these bounds involve a coupling of the summation index with its size biased distribution as was previously considered in \cite{GolRin96} for the normal approximation of nonnegative random variables. When being specialized to concrete distributions of the summation index like the Binomial, Poisson and Hypergeometric distribution, our bounds turn ou…
We deduce the non-asymptotical bilateral estimates for moment inequalities for sums of non-negative independent random variables, based on the correspondent estimates for the so-called Bell functions and the Poisson distribution.
For fixed $t\ge 2$, we consider the class of representations of $1$ as sum of unit fractions whose denominators are powers of $t$ or equivalently the class of canonical compact $t$-ary Huffman codes or equivalently rooted $t$-ary plane "canonical" trees. We study the probabilistic behaviour of the height (limit distribution is shown to be normal), the number of distinct summands (normal distribution), the path length (normal distribution), the width (main term of the expectation and concentration property) and the number of leaves at maximum distance from the root (discrete distribution).
The approach used by Kalashnikov and Tsitsiashvili for constructing upper bounds for the tail distribution of a geometric sum with subexponential summands is reconsidered. By expressing the problem in a more probabilistic light, several improvements and one correction are made, which enables the constructed bound to be significantly tighter. Several examples are given, showing how to implement the theoretical result.
Using a probabilistic model, based on random walks on the additive group $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$, we prove that the values of certain real character sums are uniformly distributed in residue classes modulo $m$.
Associated to each complex-valued random variable satisfying appropriate integrability conditions, we introduce a different generalization of the Stirling numbers of the second kind. Various equivalent definitions are provided. Attention, however, is focused on applications. Indeed, such numbers describe the moments of sums of i.i.d. random variables, determining their precise asymptotic behavior without making use of the central limit theorem. Such numbers also allow us to obtain explicit and simple Edgeworth expansions. Applications to Lévy processes and cumulants are discussed, as well.
We give a probabilistic interpretation for the Barnes G-function which appears in random matrix theory and in analytic number theory in the important moments conjecture due to Keating-Snaith for the Riemann zeta function, via the analogy with the characteristic polynomial of random unitary matrices. We show that the Mellin transform of the characteristic polynomial of random unitary matrices and the Barnes G-function are intimately related with products and sums of gamma, beta and log-gamma variables. In particular, we show that the law of the modulus of the characteristic polynomial of random…
Generalized Zeckendorf decompositions are expansions of integers as sums of elements of solutions to recurrence relations. The simplest cases are base-$b$ expansions, and the standard Zeckendorf decomposition uses the Fibonacci sequence. The expansions are finite sequences of nonnegative integer coefficients (satisfying certain technical conditions to guarantee uniqueness of the decomposition) and which can be viewed as analogs of sequences of variable-length words made from some fixed alphabet. In this paper we present a new approach and construction for uniform measures on expansions, identi…
We study some SDEs derived from the $q\to 1$ limit of a 2D surface growth model called the $q$-Whittaker process. The fluctuations are proven to exhibit Gaussian characteristics that "come down from infinity": After rescaling and re-centering, convergence to the time-inverted stationary additive stochastic heat equation holds. The point of view in this paper is a probabilistic representation of the SDEs by independent sums. By this connection, the normal and Poisson approximations and the in-between slow decorrelation, all in particular integrated forms, explain the convergence of the re-cente…
We study the maximum norm behavior of $L^2$-normalized random Fourier cosine series with a prescribed large wave number. Precise bounds of this type are an important technical tool in estimates for spinodal decomposition, the celebrated phase separation phenomenon in metal alloys. We derive rigorous asymptotic results as the wave number converges to infinity, and shed light on the behavior of the maximum norm for medium range wave numbers through numerical simulations. Finally, we develop a simplified model for describing the magnitude of extremal values of random Neumann Fourier series. The m…
Small ball inequalities have been extensively studied in the setting of Gaussian processes and associated Banach or Hilbert spaces. In this paper, we focus on studying small ball probabilities for sums or differences of independent, identically distributed random elements taking values in very general sets. Depending on the setting--abelian or nonabelian groups, or vector spaces, or Banach spaces--we provide a collection of inequalities relating different small ball probabilities that are sharp in many cases of interest. We prove these distribution-free probabilistic inequalities by showing th…
In this article, we provide an extension of the Chen-Stein inequality for Poisson approximation in the total variation distance for sums of independent Bernoulli random variables in two ways. We prove that we can improve the rate of convergence (hence the quality of the approximation) by using explicitly constructed signed or positive probability measures, and that we can extend the setting to possibly dependent random variables. The framework which allows this is that of mod-Poisson convergence, and more precisely those mod-Poisson convergent sequences whose residue functions can be expressed…
For the random interval partition of $[0,1]$ generated by the uniform stick-breaking scheme known as GEM$(1)$, let $u_k$ be the probability that the first $k$ intervals created by the stick-breaking scheme are also the first $k$ intervals to be discovered in a process of uniform random sampling of points from $[0,1]$. Then $u_k$ is a renewal sequence. We prove that $u_k$ is a rational linear combination of the real numbers $1, ζ(2), \ldots, ζ(k)$ where $ζ$ is the Riemann zeta function, and show that $u_k$ has limit $1/3$ as $k \to \infty$. Related results provide probabilistic interpretations …
The goal of this article is two-fold: in a first part, we prove Azuma-Hoeffding type concentration inequalities around the drift for the displacement of non-elementary random walks on hyperbolic spaces. For a proper hyperbolic space $M$, we obtain explicit bounds that depend only on $M$, the size of support of the measure as in the classical case of sums of independent random variables, and on the norm of the driving probability measure in the left regular representation of the group of isometries. We obtain uniform bounds in the case of hyperbolic groups and effective bounds for simple linear…
Given an Hadamard matrix $H\in M_N(\pm1)$ we consider the function $φ:\mathbb Z_2^N\times\mathbb Z_2^N\to\mathbb Z$ given by $φ(a,b)=\sum_{ij}a_ib_jH_{ij}$, which sums the entries of the various conjugates of $H$, obtained by switching signs on rows and columns. Our claim is that $φ$, or just its probabilistic distribution $μ\in\mathcal P(\mathbb Z)$, that we call "glow" of the matrix, should encode important information about $H$. We present here a number of results and conjectures in this direction, notably with a general decomposition result for $μ$.
The aim of this note is to announce some results about the probabilistic and deterministic asymptotic properties of linear groups. The first one is the analogue, for norms of random matrix products, of the classical theorem of Cramer on large deviation principles (LDP) for sums of iid real random variables. In the second result, we introduce a limit set describing the asymptotic shape of the powers of a subset S of a semisimple linear Lie group G (e.g. SL(d;R)). This limit set has applications, among others, in the study of large deviations.
The symmetric convex hull of random points that are independent and distributed according to the cone probability measure on the $\ell_p$-unit sphere of $\mathbb R^n$ for some $1\leq p < \infty$ is considered. We prove that these random polytopes have uniformly absolutely bounded isotropic constants with overwhelming probability. This generalizes the result for the Euclidean sphere ($p=2$) obtained by D. Alonso-Gutiérrez. The proof requires several different tools including a probabilistic representation of the cone measure due to G. Schechtman and J. Zinn and moment estimates for sums of inde…
We propose a novel complex-analytic method for sums of i.i.d. random variables that are heavy-tailed and integer-valued. The method combines singularity analysis, Lindelöf integrals, and bivariate saddle points. As an application, we prove three theorems on precise large and moderate deviations which provide a local variant of a result by S. V. Nagaev (1973). The theorems generalize five theorems by A. V. Nagaev (1968) on stretched exponential laws $p(k) = c\exp( -k^α)$ and apply to logarithmic hazard functions $c\exp( - (\log k)^β)$, $β>2$; they cover the big jump domain as well as the small …
We prove hypergraph variants of the celebrated Alon-Roichman theorem on spectral expansion of sparse random Cayley graphs. One of these variants implies that for every prime $p\geq 3$ and any $\varepsilon > 0$, there exists a set of directions $D\subseteq \mathbb{F}_p^n$ of size $O_{p,\varepsilon}(p^{(1-1/p +o(1))n})$ such that for every set $A\subseteq \mathbb{F}_p^n$ of density $α$, the fraction of lines in $A$ with direction in $D$ is within $\varepsilonα$ of the fraction of all lines in $A$. Our proof uses new deviation bounds for sums of independent random multi-linear forms taking values…
In this paper we show how to apply classical probabilistic tools for partial sums $\sum_{j=0}^{n-1}φ\circτ^j$ generated by a skew product $τ$, built over a sufficiently well mixing base map and a random expanding dynamical system. Under certain regularity assumptions on the observable $φ$, we obtain a central limit theorem (CLT) with rates, a functional CLT, an almost sure invariance principle (ASIP), a moderate deviations principle, several exponential concentration inequalities and Rosenthal type moment estimates for skew products with $α, ϕ$ or $ψ$ mixing base maps and expanding on the aver…
