Broadband beamforming is a technique to obtain the signal with a wide range of frequencies. It maintains the signal integrity and spatial selectivity over frequencies. This is important in several applications such as microphone array, sonar array or radar where the operation range of the signal is several octaves. Using uniform array for broadband beamforming is the old topic but there is no available design method for the arbitrary beam patterns, except the optimization methods. In this paper, we present a new method based on geometry translation and coordinate transformation to design broadband beamformer for arbitrary beam patterns. The new method uses less computation time than the optimization methods and it could help to find a better configuration of the array such as fewer sensors, smaller size.
In this work, we describe limitations of the free-field propagation model for designing broadband beamformers for microphone arrays on a rigid surface. Towards this goal, we describe a general framework for quantifying the microphone array performance in a general wave-field by directly solving the acoustic wave equation. The model utilizes Finite-Element-Method (FEM) for evaluating the response of the microphone array surface to background 3D planar and spherical waves. The effectiveness of the framework is established by designing and evaluating a representative broadband beamformer under re…

Microphone arrays are usually assumed to have rigid geometries: the microphones may move with respect to the sound field but remain fixed relative to each other. However, many useful arrays, such as those in wearable devices, have sensors that can move relative to each other. We compare two approaches to beamforming with deformable microphone arrays: first, by explicitly tracking the geometry of the array as it changes over time, and second, by designing a time-invariant beamformer based on the second-order statistics of the moving array. The time-invariant approach is shown to be appropriate …
Since space-domain information can be utilized, microphone array beamforming is often used to enhance the quality of the speech by suppressing directional disturbance. However, with the increasing number of microphone, the complexity would be increased. In this paper, a concise beamforming scheme using Maximum Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) filter is proposed to reduce the beamforming complexity. The maximum SNR filter is implemented by using the estimated direction-of-arrival (DOA) of the speech source localization (SSL) and the solving method of independent vector analysis (IVA). Our experiment…

Beamforming is an imaging tool for the investigation of aeroacoustic phenomena and results in high dimensional data that is broken down to spectra by integrating spatial Regions Of Interest. This paper presents two methods that enable the automated identification of aeroacoustic sources in sparse beamforming maps and the extraction of their corresponding spectra to overcome the manual definition of Regions Of Interest. The methods are evaluated on two scaled airframe half-model wind-tunnel measurements and on a generic monopole source. The first relies on the spatial normal distribution of aer…

Acoustic beamforming with a microphone array represents an adequate technology for remote acoustic surveillance, as the system has no mechanical parts and it has moderate size. However, in order to accomplish real implementation, several challenges need to be addressed, such as array geometry, microphone characteristics, and the digital beamforming algorithms. This paper presents a simulated analysis on the effect of the array geometry in the beamforming response. Two geometries are considered, namely, the linear and the circular geometry. The analysis is performed with computer simulations to…
In modern applications multi-sensor arrays are subject to an ever-present demand to accommodate signals with higher bandwidths. Standard methods for broadband beamforming, namely digital beamforming and true-time delay, are difficult and expensive to implement at scale. In this work, we explore an alternative method of broadband beamforming that uses a set of linear measurements and a robust low-dimensional signal subspace model. The linear measurements, taken directly from the sensors, serve as a method for dimensionality reduction and serve to limit the array readout. From these embedded sam…
The use of millimeter waves for wireless communications is one of the main technological innovations of 5G systems with respect to previous generations of cellular systems. Their consideration, however, has been up to now mainly restricted to the case in which analog or, at most, hybrid analog-digital beamforming structures were used, thus posing a limitation on the multiplexing capabilities and peak data rates that could be theoretically achieved at these frequencies. Recent progress in the field of electronics, however, has made the energy consumption of digital beamforming structures at lea…
In broadband millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) systems, it is desirable to design hybrid beamformers with common analog beamformer for the entire band while employing different baseband beamformers in different frequency sub-bands. Furthermore, the performance mostly relies on the perfectness of the channel information. In this paper, we propose a deep learning (DL) framework for hybrid beamformer design in broadband mm-Wave massive MIMO systems. We design a convolutional neural network (CNN) that accepts the channel matrix of all subcarriers as input and the output of CNN is the hybrid beamformers. T…
Measured acoustic data can be contaminated by noise. This typically happens when microphones are mounted in a wind tunnel wall or on the fuselage of an aircraft, where hydrodynamic pressure fluctuations of the Turbulent Boundary Layer (TBL) can mask the acoustic pressures of interest. For measurements done with an array of microphones, methods exist for denoising the acoustic data. Use is made of the fact that the noise is usually concentrated in the diagonal of the Cross-Spectral Matrix, because of the short spatial coherence of TBL noise. This paper reviews several existing denoising methods…
In this letter, we consider a uniform circular array (UCA) based line-of-sight (LOS) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system, where the transmit and receive UCAs are aligned with each other. We propose a simple channel independent beamforming scheme with fast symbol-wise maximum likelihood (ML) detection.
Cognitive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is capable of adjusting system parameters adaptively by sensing and learning in complex dynamic environment. Beamforming performance of MIMO radar is guided by both beamforming weight coefficients and the transceiver configuration. We propose a cognitive-driven MIMO array design where both the beamforming weights and the transceiver configuration are adaptively and concurrently optimized under different environmental conditions. The perception-action cycle involves data collection of full virtual array, covariance reconstruction and joint d…
A two-stage multi-channel speech enhancement method is proposed which consists of a novel adaptive beamformer, Hybrid Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR), Isotropic-MVDR (Iso), and a novel multi-channel spectral Principal Components Analysis (PCA) denoising. In the first stage, the Hybrid-MVDR performs multiple MVDRs using a dictionary of pre-defined noise field models and picks the minimum-power outcome, which benefits from the robustness of signal-independent beamforming and the performance of adaptive beamforming. In the second stage, the outcomes of Hybrid and Iso are jointly u…
In this paper, we propose a beamforming method for the calibration of the direction-independent gain of the analog chains of aperture arrays. The gain estimates are obtained by cross-correlating the output voltage of each antenna with a voltage beamformed using the other antennas of the array. When the beamforming weights are equal to the average cross-correlated power, a relation is drawn with the StEFCal algorithm. An example illustrates this approach for few point sources and a 256-element array.
This paper studies hybrid beamforming for active sensing applications, such as millimeter-wave or ultrasound imaging. Hybrid beamforming can substantially lower the cost and power consumption of fully digital sensor arrays by reducing the number of active front ends. Sparse arrays can be used to further reduce hardware costs. We consider phased arrays and employ linear beamforming with possibly sparse array configurations at both the transmitter and receiver. The quality of the acquired images is improved by adding together several component images corresponding to different transmissions and …
Sparse array design aided by emerging fast sensor switching technologies can lower the overall system overhead by reducing the number of expensive transceiver chains. In this paper, we examine the active sparse array design enabling the maximum signal to interference plus noise ratio (MaxSINR) beamforming at the MIMO radar receiver. The proposed approach entails an entwined design, i.e., jointly selecting the optimum transmit and receive sensor locations for accomplishing MaxSINR receive beamforming. Specifically, we consider a co-located multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar platform wi…
This paper summarizes an investigation around millimeter-wave (mmWave) multimode circular antenna array based beamformer capable of specially encoded data transmission in a wide coverage area. The circular antenna array is capable of an entire 360 deg. azimuth sector coverage where broadcast, uni-cast and multi-cast radio transmissions are possible. Orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode transmission along the elevation axis, i.e., perpendicular to the azimuth plane, can also be achieved. These two types of spatially encoded beamforming makes coverage in almost an entire hemisphere possible. The …
The transmitter signals in the fifth generation (5G) wireless networks suffer from significant path loss due to the use of higher frequencies in Sub-6 GHz and millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands. Therefore, beamforming is an essential and powerful tool in 5G to enhance signal for the desired direction and suppress interferences from other directions. For a given number of antenna elements, the geometry of the array dictates its beam pattern. Most of the works in the existing literature address the use of rectangular planar antenna (RPA) arrays for 5G beamforming. In this work, we demonstrate that a…
We propose an efficient method for designing broad beams with spatially flat array factor and efficient power utilization for cell-specific coverage in communication systems equipped with large antenna arrays. To ensure full power efficiency, the method is restricted to phase-only weight manipulations. Our framework is based on the discovered connection between dual-polarized beamforming and polyphase Golay sequences. Exploiting this connection, we propose several methods for array expansion from smaller to larger sizes, while preserving the radiation pattern. In addition, to fill the gaps in …
Efficient and low-complexity beamforming design is an important element of satellite communication systems with mobile receivers equipped with phased arrays. In this work, we apply the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) method with successive sub-array selection for finding the optimal antenna weights that maximize the received signal power at a uniform plane array (UPA). The proposed algorithms are based on iterative gradient approximation by injecting some carefully designed perturbations on the parameters to be estimated. Additionally, the successive sub-array selecti…
The paper considers sparse array design for receive beamforming achieving maximum signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (MaxSINR) for both single point source and multiple point sources, operating in an interference active environment. Unlike existing sparse design methods which either deal with structured environment-independent or non-structured environment-dependent arrays, our method is a hybrid approach and seeks a full augumentable array that optimizes beamformer performance. This approach proves important for limited aperture that constrains the number of possible uniform grid points …
In this paper, we propose a beamforming design for dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) systems at the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, where hybrid beamforming and sub-arrayed MIMO radar techniques are jointly exploited. We assume that a base station (BS) is serving a user equipment (UE) located in a Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) channel, which in the meantime actively detects multiple targets located in a Line-of-Sight (LoS) channel. Given the optimal communication beamformer and the desired radar beampattern, we propose to design the analog and digital beamformers under non-convex constant-m…
Beamforming makes possible a focused communication method. It is extensively employed in many disciplines involving electromagnetic waves, including arrayed ultrasonic, optical, and high-speed wireless communication. Conventional beam steering often requires the addition of separate active amplitude phase control units after each radiating element. The high power consumption and complexity of large-scale phased arrays can be overcome by reducing the number of active controllers, pushing beamforming into satellite communications and deep space exploration. Here, we suggest a brand-new design fo…
This paper studies analog beamforming in active sensing applications, such as millimeter-wave radar or ultrasound imaging. Analog beamforming architectures employ a single RF-IF chain connected to all array elements via inexpensive phase shifters. This can drastically lower costs compared to fully-digital beamformers having a dedicated RF-IF chain for each sensor. However, controlling only the element phases may lead to elevated side-lobe levels and degraded image quality. We address this issue by image addition, which synthesizes a high resolution image by adding together several lower resolu…
This paper discusses early results associated with a fully-digital direct-conversion array receiver at 28~GHz. The proposed receiver makes use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) electronics, including the receiver chain. The design consists of a custom 28~GHz patch antenna sub-array providing gain in the elevation plane, with azimuthal plane beamforming provided by real-time digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms running on a Xilinx Radio Frequency System on Chip (RF SoC). The proposed array receiver employs element-wise fully-digital array processing that supports ADC sample rates up to 2…
In most multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, e.g., Massive MIMO, the antenna spacing is generally no less than half a wavelength. It helps to reduce the mutual coupling and therefore facilitate the system design. The maximum array gain is the number of antennas in this settings. However, when the antenna spacing is made very small, the array gain of a compact array can be proportional to the square of the number of antennas - a value much larger than the traditional array. To achieve this so-called "superdirectivity" however, the calculation of the excitation coefficien…
The passive electronically scanned array (PESA) is widely used due to its simple structure and low cost. {Its antenna weights have unit modulus and thus, only the weights phases can be controlled. PESA has limited degrees of freedom for beampattern design, where only the direction of the main beam can be controlled.} In this paper we propose a novel way to improve the beamforming capability of PESA by endowing it with more degrees of freedom via the use of double phase shifters (DPS). By doing so, both the magnitude and the phase of the antenna weights can be controlled, allowing for more flex…
We develop sparse array receive beamformer design methods achieving maximum signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (MaxSINR) for wideband sources and jammers. Both tapped delay line (TDL) filtering and the DFT realizations to wideband array processing are considered. The array sparsity stems from the limited number of available RF transmission chains that switch between the sensors, thereby configuring different arrays at different times. The sparse array configuration design problem is formulated as a quadratically constraint quadratic program (QCQP) and solved by using SDR (semidefinite rel…
We present a distributed antenna array supporting open-loop distributed beamforming at 1.5 GHz. Based on a scalable, high-accuracy internode ranging technique, we demonstrate open-loop beamforming experiments using three transmitting nodes. To support distributed beamforming without feedback from the destination, the relative positions of the nodes in the distributed array must be known with accuracies below $λ/15$ of the beamforming carrier frequency to ensure that the array maintains at least 90\% coherent beamforming gain at the receive location. For operations in the microwave range, this …
