Since space-domain information can be utilized, microphone array beamforming is often used to enhance the quality of the speech by suppressing directional disturbance. However, with the increasing number of microphone, the complexity would be increased. In this paper, a concise beamforming scheme using Maximum Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) filter is proposed to reduce the beamforming complexity. The maximum SNR filter is implemented by using the estimated direction-of-arrival (DOA) of the speech source localization (SSL) and the solving method of independent vector analysis (IVA). Our experiments show that when compared with other widely-used algorithms, the proposed algorithm obtain higher gain of signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR).

Microphone arrays are usually assumed to have rigid geometries: the microphones may move with respect to the sound field but remain fixed relative to each other. However, many useful arrays, such as those in wearable devices, have sensors that can move relative to each other. We compare two approaches to beamforming with deformable microphone arrays: first, by explicitly tracking the geometry of the array as it changes over time, and second, by designing a time-invariant beamformer based on the second-order statistics of the moving array. The time-invariant approach is shown to be appropriate …
The binaural minimum-variance distortionless-response (BMVDR) beamformer is a well-known noise reduction algorithm that can be steered using the relative transfer function (RTF) vector of the desired speech source. Exploiting the availability of an external microphone that is spatially separated from the head-mounted microphones, an efficient method has been recently proposed to estimate the RTF vector in a diffuse noise field. When multiple external microphones are available, different RTF vector estimates can be obtained by using this method for each external microphone. In this paper, we pr…
Acoustic signal acts as an essential input to many systems. However, the pure acoustic signal is very difficult to extract, especially in noisy environments. Existing beamforming systems are able to extract the signal transmitted from certain directions. However, since microphones are centrally deployed, these systems have limited coverage and low spatial resolution. We overcome the above limitations and present ChordMics, a distributed beamforming system. By leveraging the spatial diversity of the distributed microphones, ChordMics is able to extract the acoustic signal from arbitrary points.…

Beamforming has been extensively investigated for multi-channel audio processing tasks. Recently, learning-based beamforming methods, sometimes called \textit{neural beamformers}, have achieved significant improvements in both signal quality (e.g. signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)) and speech recognition (e.g. word error rate (WER)). Such systems are generally non-causal and require a large context for robust estimation of inter-channel features, which is impractical in applications requiring low-latency responses. In this paper, we propose filter-and-sum network (FaSNet), a time-domain, filter-base…

Far-field speech processing is an important and challenging problem. In this paper, we propose \textit{deep ad-hoc beamforming}, a deep-learning-based multichannel speech enhancement framework based on ad-hoc microphone arrays, to address the problem. It contains three novel components. First, it combines \textit{ad-hoc microphone arrays} with deep-learning-based multichannel speech enhancement, which reduces the probability of the occurrence of far-field acoustic environments significantly. Second, it groups the microphones around the speech source to a local microphone array by a supervised …
In this work, we describe limitations of the free-field propagation model for designing broadband beamformers for microphone arrays on a rigid surface. Towards this goal, we describe a general framework for quantifying the microphone array performance in a general wave-field by directly solving the acoustic wave equation. The model utilizes Finite-Element-Method (FEM) for evaluating the response of the microphone array surface to background 3D planar and spherical waves. The effectiveness of the framework is established by designing and evaluating a representative broadband beamformer under re…

Acoustic beamforming with a microphone array represents an adequate technology for remote acoustic surveillance, as the system has no mechanical parts and it has moderate size. However, in order to accomplish real implementation, several challenges need to be addressed, such as array geometry, microphone characteristics, and the digital beamforming algorithms. This paper presents a simulated analysis on the effect of the array geometry in the beamforming response. Two geometries are considered, namely, the linear and the circular geometry. The analysis is performed with computer simulations to…
We present the signal processing framework and some results for the IEEE AASP challenge on acoustic source localization and tracking (LOCATA). The system is designed for the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation in single-source scenarios. The proposed framework consists of four main building blocks: pre-processing, voice activity detection (VAD), localization, tracking. The signal pre-processing pipeline includes the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) of the multichannel input captured by the array and the cross power spectral density (CPSD) matrices estimation. The VAD is calculated with a …
This paper develops a framework that can perform denoising, dereverberation, and source separation accurately by using a relatively small number of microphones. It has been empirically confirmed that Independent Vector Analysis (IVA) can blindly separate N sources from their sound mixture even with diffuse noise when a sufficiently large number (=M) of microphones are available (i.e., M>>N). However, the estimation accuracy seriously degrades as the number of microphones, or more specifically M-N (>=0), decreases. To overcome this limitation of IVA, we propose switching IVA (swIVA) in this pap…

This study proposes a multi-microphone complex spectral mapping approach for speech dereverberation on a fixed array geometry. In the proposed approach, a deep neural network (DNN) is trained to predict the real and imaginary (RI) components of direct sound from the stacked reverberant (and noisy) RI components of multiple microphones. We also investigate the integration of multi-microphone complex spectral mapping with beamforming and post-filtering. Experimental results on multi-channel speech dereverberation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

This paper describes the integration of weighted delay-and-sum beamforming with speech source localization using image processing and robot head visual servoing for source tracking. We take into consideration the fact that the directivity gain provided by the beamforming depends on the angular distance between its main lobe and the main response axis of the microphone array. A visual servoing scheme is used to reduce the angular distance between the center of the video frame of a robot camera and a target object. Additionally, the beamforming strategy presented combines two information sources…
Building on the deep learning based acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) in the single-loudspeaker (single-channel) and single-microphone setup, this paper investigates multi-channel AEC (MCAEC) and multi-microphone AEC (MMAEC). We train a deep neural network (DNN) to predict the near-end speech from microphone signals with far-end signals used as additional information. We find that the deep learning approach avoids the non-uniqueness problem in traditional MCAEC algorithms. For the AEC setup with multiple microphones, rather than employing AEC for each microphone, a single DNN is trained to achi…

This paper addresses the problem of microphone array generalization for deep-learning-based end-to-end multichannel speech enhancement. We aim to train a unique deep neural network (DNN) potentially performing well on unseen microphone arrays. The microphone array geometry shapes the network's parameters when training on a fixed microphone array, and thus restricts the generalization of the trained network to another microphone array. To resolve this problem, a single network is trained using data recorded by various microphone arrays of different geometries. We design three variants of our re…
In this paper, we propose two mask-based beamforming methods using a deep neural network (DNN) trained by multichannel loss functions. Beamforming technique using time-frequency (TF)-masks estimated by a DNN have been applied to many applications where TF-masks are used for estimating spatial covariance matrices. To train a DNN for mask-based beamforming, loss functions designed for monaural speech enhancement/separation have been employed. Although such a training criterion is simple, it does not directly correspond to the performance of mask-based beamforming. To overcome this problem, we us…

Broadband beamforming is a technique to obtain the signal with a wide range of frequencies. It maintains the signal integrity and spatial selectivity over frequencies. This is important in several applications such as microphone array, sonar array or radar where the operation range of the signal is several octaves. Using uniform array for broadband beamforming is the old topic but there is no available design method for the arbitrary beam patterns, except the optimization methods. In this paper, we present a new method based on geometry translation and coordinate transformation to design broad…

Spatial clustering techniques can achieve significant multi-channel noise reduction across relatively arbitrary microphone configurations, but have difficulty incorporating a detailed speech/noise model. In contrast, LSTM neural networks have successfully been trained to recognize speech from noise on single-channel inputs, but have difficulty taking full advantage of the information in multi-channel recordings. This paper integrates these two approaches, training LSTM speech models to clean the masks generated by the Model-based EM Source Separation and Localization (MESSL) spatial clustering…
In multi-microphone speech enhancement, reverberation as well as additive noise and/or interfering speech are commonly suppressed by deconvolution and spatial filtering, e.g., using multi-channel linear prediction (MCLP) on the one hand and beamforming, e.g., a generalized sidelobe canceler (GSC), on the other hand. In this paper, we consider several reverberant speech components, whereof some are to be dereverberated and others to be canceled, as well as a diffuse (e.g., babble) noise component to be suppressed. In order to perform both deconvolution and spatial filtering, we integrate MCLP a…

Auditory attention decoding (AAD) methods allow to identify the target speaker which the listener is attending to from single-trial EEG recordings. Aiming at enhancing the target speaker and suppressing interfering speakers, reverberation and ambient noise, in this paper we propose a cognitive-driven multi-microphone speech enhancement system, which combines a neural-network-based mask estimator, weighted minimum power distortionless response convolut…

Beamforming methods for sound source localization are usually based on free-field Green's functions to model the sound propagation between source and microphone. This assumption is known to be incorrect for many industrial applications and the beamforming results can suffer from this inconsistency regarding both, accuracy of source power estimation, and accuracy of source localisation. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether the use of numerically calculated Green's functions can improve the results of beamforming measurements. The current test cases of numerical and experimental inves…

The method uses a steered beamformer based on the reliability-weighted phase transform (RWPHAT) along with a particle filter-based tracking algorithm. The proposed system is able to estimate both the direction and the distance of the sources. In a videoconferencing context, the direction was estimated with an accuracy better than one degree while the distance was accurate within 10% RMS. Tracking of up to three simultaneous moving speakers is demonstrate…
An important problem in ad-hoc microphone speech separation is how to guarantee the robustness of a system with respect to the locations and numbers of microphones. The former requires the system to be invariant to different indexing of the microphones with the same locations, while the latter requires the system to be able to process inputs with varying dimensions. Conventional optimization-based beamforming techniques satisfy these requirements by definition, while for deep learning-based end-to-end systems those constraints are not fully addressed. In this paper, we propose transform-averag…
Estimating a time-varying spatial covariance matrix for a beamforming algorithm is a challenging task, especially for wearable devices, as the algorithm must compensate for time-varying signal statistics due to rapid pose-changes. In this paper, we propose Neural Integrated Covariance Estimators for Beamformers, NICE-Beam. NICE-Beam is a general technique for learning how to estimate time-varying spatial covariance matrices, which we apply to joint speech enhancement and dereverberation. It is based on training a neural network module to non-linearly track and leverage scene information across…

Mobile robots in real-life settings would benefit from being able to localize and track sound sources. Such a capability can help localizing a person or an interesting event in the environment, and also provides enhanced processing for other capabilities such as speech recognition. To give this capability to a robot, the challenge is not only to localize simultaneous sound sources, but to track them over time. In this paper we propose a robust sound source localization and tracking method using an array of eight microphones. The method is based on a frequency-domain implementation of a steered…
Many hearing-impaired listeners struggle to localize sounds due to poor availability of binaural cues. Listeners with a cochlear implant and a contralateral hearing aid -- so-called bimodal listeners -- are amongst the worst performers, as both interaural time and level differences are poorly transmitted. We present a new method to enhance head shadow in the low frequencies. Head shadow enhancement is achieved with a fixed beamformer with contralateral attenuation in each ear. The method results in interaural level differences which vary monotonically with angle. It also improves low-frequency…
The key advantage of using multiple microphones for speech enhancement is that spatial filtering can be used to complement the tempo-spectral processing. In a traditional setting, linear spatial filtering (beamforming) and single-channel post-filtering are commonly performed separately. In contrast, there is a trend towards employing deep neural networks (DNNs) to learn a joint spatial and tempo-spectral non-linear filter, which means that the restriction of a linear processing model and that of a separate processing of spatial and tempo-spectral information can potentially be overcome. Howeve…

Frequency-domain beamformers have been successful in a wide range of multi-channel neural separation systems in the past years. However, the operations in conventional frequency-domain beamformers are typically independently-defined and complex-valued, which result in two drawbacks: the former does not fully utilize the advantage of end-to-end optimization, and the latter may introduce numerical instability during the training phase. Motivated by the recent success in end-to-end neural separation systems, in this paper we propose time-domain real-valued generalized Wiener filter (TD-GWF), a li…
Recently, the convolutional weighted power minimization distortionless response (WPD) beamformer was proposed, which unifies multi-channel weighted prediction error dereverberation and minimum power distortionless response beamforming. To optimize the convolutional filter, the desired speech component is modeled with a time-varying Gaussian model, which promotes the sparsity of the desired speech component in the short-time Fourier transform domain compared to the noisy microphone signals. In this paper we generalize the convolutional WPD beamformer by using an lp-norm cost function, introduci…
