We present the results of two-temperature magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the propagation of sub-relativistic jets of active galactic nuclei. The dependence of the electron and ion temperature distributions on the fraction of electron heating fe at the shock front is studied for fe=0, 0.05, and 0.2. Numerical results indicate that in sub-relativistic, rarefied jets, the jet plasma crossing the terminal shock forms a hot, two-temperature plasma in which the ion temperature is higher than the electron temperature. The two-temperature plasma expands and forms a backflow referred to as a cocoon, in which the ion temperature remains higher than the electron temperature for longer than 100 Myr. Electrons in the cocoon are continuously heated by ions through Coulomb collisions, and the electron temperature thus remains at Te > 10^9 K in the cocoon. X-ray emissions from the cocoon are weak because the electron number density is low. Meanwhile, soft X-rays are emitted from the shocked intracluster medium surrounding the cocoon. Mixing of the jet plasma and the shocked intracluster medium through the Kelvin--Helmholtz instability at the interface enhances X-ray emissions around the contact discontinuity between the cocoon and shocked intracluster medium.
Observations of relativistic jets from black holes systems suggest that particle acceleration often occurs at fixed locations within the flow. These sites could be associated with critical points that allow the formation of standing shock regions, such as the magnetosonic modified fast point. Using the self-similar formulation of special relativistic magnetohydrodynamics by Vlahakis & Königl, we derive a new class of flow solutions that are both relativistic and cross the modified fast point at a finite height. Our solutions span a range of Lorentz factors up to at least 10, appropriate for mo…
Achromatic breaks in afterglow light curves of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) arise naturally if the product of the jet's Lorentz factor γand opening angle Θ_j satisfies (γΘ_j) >> 1 at the onset of the afterglow phase, i.e., soon after the conclusion of the prompt emission. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of collimated GRB jets generally give (γΘ_j) <~ 1, suggesting that MHD models may be inconsistent with jet breaks. We work within the collapsar paradigm and use axisymmetric relativistic MHD simulations to explore the effect of a finite stellar envelope on the structure of the jet. Our idealiz…
Magnetohydrodynamic instabilities can be responsible for the formation of structures with various scales in astrophysical jets. We consider the stability properties of jets containing both the azimuthal and axial field of subthermal strength. A magnetic field with complex topology in jets is suggested by theoretical models and is consistent with recent observations. Stability is discussed by means of a linear analysis of the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations. We argue that in azimuthal and axial magnetic fields the jet is always unstable to non-axisymmetric perturbations. Stabilization does …
Relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei, galactic microquasars, and gamma-ray bursts are widely considered to be magnetohydrodynamically driven by black hole accretion systems, although conversion mechanism from Poynting into particle kinetic energy flux is still open. Recent detailed numerical and analytical studies of global structures of steady, axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows with specific boundary conditions have not reproduced as rapid an energy conversion as required by observations. In order to find more suitable boundary conditions, we focus on the flow along a poloid…
The formation mechanism of the W50/SS433 complex has long been a mystery. We propose a new scenario in which the SS433 jets themselves form the W50/SS433 system. We carry out magnetohydrodynamics simulations of two-side jet propagation using the public code CANS+. As found in previous jet studies, when the propagating jet is lighter than the surrounding medium, the shocked plasma flows back from the jet tip to the core. We find that the morphology of light jets is spheroidal at early times, and afterward, the shell and wings are developed by the broadening spherical cocoon. The morphology stro…
We present a new, approximate method for modelling the acceleration and collimation of relativistic jets in the presence of gravity. This method is self-similar throughout the computational domain where gravitational effects are negligible and, where significant, self-similar within a flux tube. These solutions are applicable to jets launched from a small region (e.g., near the inner edge of an accretion disk). As implied by earlier work, the flow can converge onto the rotation axis, potentially creating a collimation shock. In this first version of the method, we derive the gravitational cont…
Recently it has been observed that the scaling of jet power with black hole spin in galactic X-ray binaries is consistent with the predictions of the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) jet model. These observations motivate us to revisit the BZ model using general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of magnetized jets from accreting (h/r ~ 0.3), spinning (0 < a_* < 0.98) black holes. We have three main results. First, we quantify the discrepancies between the BZ jet power and our simulations: assuming maximum efficiency and uniform fields on the horizon leads to a ~10% overestimate of jet power, w…
I put forth a scenario of jet-driven jittering-jets in cooling flows in galaxies and clusters of galaxies. By uplifting cool gas from the center of the cluster jets and the bubbles they inflate cause the direction of later jets to substantially change. Some uplifted cool clumps fall back to feed the active galactic nucleus, in what is termed the cold feedback mechanism, but with an average angular momentum that is largely inclined to that of the original jets. The proposed jittering jets scenario allows, over the cooling time of the intracluster medium (ICM), the heating by the mixing of hot j…
We have investigated the influence of jet rotation and differential motion on the linear and nonlinear development of the current-driven (CD) kink instability of force-free helical magnetic equilibria via three-dimensional relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. In this study, we follow the temporal development within a periodic computational box. Displacement of the initial helical magnetic field leads to the growth of the CD kink instability. We find that, in accord with linear stability theory, the development of the instability depends on the lateral distribution of the poloidal magn…
While there is overwhelming observational evidence of AGN-driven jets in galaxy clusters and groups, if and how the jet energy is delivered to the ambient medium remains unanswered. Here we perform very high resolution AGN jet simulations within a live, cosmologically evolved cluster with the moving mesh code AREPO. We find that mock X-ray and radio lobe properties are in good agreement with observations with different power jets transitioning from FR-I to FR-II-like morphologies. During the lobe inflation phase, heating by both internal and bow shocks contributes to lobe energetics, and $\sim…
I estimate the energy that neutrino heating adds to the outflow that jets induce in the collapsing core material in core collapse supernovae (CCSNe), and find that this energy crudely doubles the energy that the jets deposit into the outer core. I consider the jittering jets explosion mechanism where there are several stochastic jet-launching episodes, each lasting for about 0.01-0.1 seconds. The collapsing core material passes through the stalled shock at about 100 km and then slowly flows onto the proto-neutron star (NS). I assume that the proto-NS launches jittering jets, and that the jets …
In this review, analytical results obtained for a wide class of stationary axisymmetric flows in the vicinity of compact astrophysical objects are analyzed, with an emphasis on quantitative predictions for specific sources. Recent years have witnessed a great increase in understanding the formation and properties of astrophysical jets. This is due not only to new observations but also to advances in analytical theory which has produced fairly simple relations, and to what can undoubtedly be called a breakthrough in numerical simulation which has enabled confirmation of theoretical predictions.…
There is a broad consensus that accretion onto supermassive black holes and consequent jet formation power the observed emission from active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, there has been less agreement about how jets form in accretion flows, their possible relationship to black hole spin, and how they interact with the surrounding medium. There have also been theoretical concerns about instabilities in standard accretion disk models and lingering discrepancies with observational constraints. Despite seemingly successful applications to X-ray binaries, the standard accretion disk model faces …
In this work, at first we present a model of studying astrophysical flows of binary systems and microquasars based on the laws of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. Then, by solving the time independent transfer equation, we estimate the primary and secondary particle distributions within the hadronic astrophysical jets as well as the emissivities of high energy neutrinos and $γ$-rays. One of our main goals is, by taking into consideration the various energy-losses of particles into the hadronic jets, to determine through the transport equation the respective particle distributions focusing on…
Young stellar object observations suggest that some jets rotate in the opposite direction with respect to their disk. In a recent study, Sauty et al. (2012) have shown that this does not contradict the magnetocentrifugal mechanism that is believed to launch such outflows. Signatures of motions transverse to the jet axis and in opposite directions have recently been measured in M87 (Meyer et al. 2013). One possible interpretation of this motion is the one of counter rotating knots. Here, we extend our previous analytical derivation of counter-rotation to relativistic jets, demonstrating that co…
The evolution of powerful extragalactic jets is not only interesting by itself, but also for its impact on the evolution of the host galaxy and its surroundings. We have performed long-term axisymmetric numerical simulations of relativistic jets with different powers to study their evolution through an environment with a pressure and density gradient. Our results show key differences in the evolution of jets with different powers in terms of the spatial and temporal scales of energy deposition. According to our results, the observed morphology in X-ray cavities requires that an important fract…
Feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is believed to prevent catastrophic cooling in galaxy clusters. However, how the feedback energy is transformed into heat, and how the AGN jets heat the intracluster medium (ICM) isotropically, still remain elusive. In this work, we gain insights into the relative importance of different heating mechanisms using three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations including cold gas accretion and momentum-driven jet feedback, which are the most successful models to date in terms reproducing the properties of cool cores. We find that there is net heating within …
Interaction of intense radiation from the underlying accretion disc with steady, general-relativistic jet is studied. The radiation field imparts momentum as well as energy on to the outflowing jet under Compton scattering. As a result, the jet gains momentum and is simultaneously heated up. Jets can be classified as types A, B and C according to their base properties. We found that A type jets can undergo shock transition. It is also shown that, in the Compton scattering regime, radiation can drive jets starting with very small thermal energy at the base (B and C type jets). Such that, radiat…
From pulsar scintillations we infer the presence of sheet-like structures in the ISM; it has been suggested that these are current sheets. Current sheets probably play an important role in heating the solar corona, and there is evidence for their presence in the solar wind. Such magnetic discontinuities have been found in numerical simulations with particular boundary conditions, as well as in simulations using an incompressible equation of state. Here, I investigate their formation under more general circumstances by means of topological considerations as well as numerical simulations of the …
Relativistic jets from compact objects are ubiquitous phenomena in the Unvierse, but their driving mechanism has been an enigmatic issue over many decades. Two basic models have been extensively discussed: magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) jets and radiation-hydrodynamic (RHD) jets. Currently, the former is more widely accepted, since magnetic field is expected to provide both the acceleration and collimation mechanisms, whereas radiation field cannot collimate outflow. Here, we propose a new type of jets, radiation-magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) jets, based on our global RMHD simulation of luminous accre…
In resistive and viscous magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations we obtain axial jets launched from the innermost magnetosphere of a star-disk system. We found that in a part of the parameter space continuous asymmetric jets, which are propagating in opposite directions, are launched. We compare the speed of propagation and rotation of obtained jets with recent observational results.
We study the stability of Hall MHD with strong magnetic fields in which Landau quantization of electrons is important. We find that the strong-field Hall modes can be destabilized by the dependence of the differential magnetic susceptibility on magnetic field strength. This instability is studied using linear perturbation theory, and is found to have typical growth time of order $\lesssim 10^3$ yrs, with the growth time decreasing as a function of wavelength of the perturbation. The instability is self-limiting, turning off following a period of local field growth by a few percent of the initi…
We present our numerical results of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the collapse of rotating massive stars in light of the collapsar model of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Pushed by recent evolution calculations of GRB progenitors, we focus on lower angular momentum of the central core than the ones taken mostly in previous studies. By performing special relativistic simulations including both realistic equation of state and neutrino coolings, we follow a unprecedentedly long-term evolution of the slowly rotating collapsars up to $\sim$ 10 s, accompanied by the formation of…
In this paper we give a detailed account of the first 3D relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWN), with parameters most suitable for the Crab Nebula. In order to clarify the new features specific to 3D models, reference 2D simulations have been carried out as well. Compared to the previous 2D simulations, we considered pulsar winds with much stronger magnetisation, up to σ=3, and accounted more accurately for the anticipated magnetic dissipation in the striped zone of these winds. While the 3D models preserve the separation of the post termination shock f…
The laboratory simulations of jets from young stars that have been carried out for many years at plasma focus facilities allow the internal structure of the active regions emerging during the interaction of the jet with the surrounding plasma to be studied in detail. We have found a new wide class of solutions for the equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics describing the closed axisymmetric stationary flows that are apparently realized in the active regions. Such flows are shown to well reproduce the internal structure of the plasma structures observed in laboratory simulations of astrophysic…
We present high resolution 2D and 3D simulations of magnetized decaying turbulence in relativistic resistive magneto-hydrodynamics. The simulations show dynamic formation of large scale intermittent long-lived current sheets being disrupted by the tearing instability into plasmoid chains. These current sheets are locations of enhanced magnetic field dissipation and heating of the plasma. We find magnetic energy spectra $\propto k^{-3/2}$, together with strongly pronounced dynamic alignment of Elsasser fields and of velocity and magnetic fields, for strong guide-field turbulence, whereas we ret…
Traveling across several order of magnitude in distance, relativistic jets from strong gravity region to asymptotic flat spacetime region are believed to consist of several general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) processes. We present a semi-analytical approach for modeling the global structures of a trans-fast magnetosonic relativistic jet, which should be ejected from a plasma source nearby a black hole in a funnel region enclosed by dense accreting flow and also disk corona around the black hole. Our model consistently includes the inflow and outflow part of the GRMHD solution alon…
Relativistic jets are collimated plasma outflows with relativistic speeds. Astrophysical objects involving relativistic jets are a system comprising a compact object such as a black hole, surrounded by rotating accretion flows, with the relativistic jets produced near the central compact object. The most accepted models explaining the origin of relativistic jets involve magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes. Over the past few decades, many general relativistic MHD (GRMHD) codes have been developed and applied to model relativistic jet formation in various conditions. This short review provides a…
Black hole (BH) accretion flows and jets are qualitatively affected by the presence of ordered magnetic fields. We study fully three-dimensional global general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of radially extended and thick (height $H$ to cylindrical radius $R$ ratio of $|H/R|\sim 0.2--1$) accretion flows around BHs with various dimensionless spins ($a/M$, with BH mass $M$) and with initially toroidally-dominated ($ϕ$-directed) and poloidally-dominated ($R-z$ directed) magnetic fields. Firstly, for toroidal field models and BHs with high enough $|a/M|$, coherent large-scale (…

In this paper, we describe the results of three-dimensional relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations aimed at probing the role of regular magnetic field on the development of the instability that accompanies recollimation of relativistic jets. In particular, we studied the recollimation driven by the reconfinement of jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN) by the thermal pressure of galactic coronas. We find that a relatively weak azimuthal magnetic field can completely suppress the recollimation instability in such jets, with the critical magnetisation parameter $σ_{cr} < 0.01$. We argue t…
Jets producing gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are likely to carry a neutron component that drifts with respect to the proton component. The neutron-proton collisions strongly heat the jet and generate electron-positron pairs. We investigate radiation produced by this heating using a new numerical code. Our results confirm the recent claim that collisional heating generates the observed Band-type spectrum of GRBs. We extend the model to study the effects of magnetic fields on the emitted spectrum. We find that the spectrum peak remains near 1 MeV for the entire range of the magnetization parameter $0<…
The paradigm in which magnetic fields play a crucial role in launching/collimating outflows in many astrophysical objects continues to gain support. However, semi-analytical models including the effect of magnetic fields on the dynamics and morphology of jets are still missing due to the intrinsic difficulties in integrating the equations describing a collimated, relativistic flow in the presence of gravity. Only few solutions have been found so far, due to the highly nonlinear character of the equations together with the need to blindly search for singularities. These numerical problems preve…
The structure and dynamics of the M87 jet from sub-milli-arcsec to arcsecond scales are continuously examined. We analysed the VLBA archival data taken at 43 and 86 GHz to measure the size of VLBI cores. Millimeter/sub-mm VLBI cores are considered as innermost jet emissions, which has been originally suggested by Blandford & Königl. Those components fairly follow an extrapolated parabolic streamline in our previous study so that the jet has a single power-law structure with nearly five orders of magnitude in the distance starting from the vicinity of the supermassive black hole (SMBH), less th…
The Black Hole Accretion Code (BHAC) has recently been extended with the ability to evolve charged test particles according to the Lorentz force within resistive relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations. We apply this method to evolve particles in a reconnecting current sheet that forms due to the coalescence of two magnetic flux tubes in 2D Minkowski spacetime. This is the first analysis of charged test particle evolution in resistive relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations. The energy distributions of an ensemble of 100.000 electrons are analyzed, as well as the acceleration of pa…
Recent advances in general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic modeling of jets offer unprecedented insights into the inner workings of accreting black holes that power the jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and other accretion systems. I will present the results of recent studies that determine spin-dependence of jet power and discuss the implications for the AGN radio loud/quiet dichotomy and recent observations of high jet power in a number of AGN.
We perform the first magnetohydrodynamic simulations in full general relativity of self-consistent rotating neutron stars (NSs) with ultrastrong mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields. The initial uniformly rotating NS models are computed assuming perfect conductivity, stationarity, and axisymmetry. Although the specific geometry of the mixed field configuration can delay or accelerate the development of various instabilities known from analytic perturbative studies, all our models finally succumb to them. Differential rotation is developed spontaneously in the cores of our magnetars whic…
Turbulence in an accretion disk launches Alfvén waves (AWs) that propagate away from the disk along magnetic field lines. Because the Alfvén speed varies with distance from the disk, the AWs undergo partial non-WKB reflection, and counter-propagating AWs subsequently interact, causing AW energy to cascade to small scales and dissipate. To investigate this process, we introduce an Elsasser-like formulation of general relativistic MHD (GRMHD) and develop the theory of general relativistic reduced MHD in an inhomogeneous medium. We then derive a set of equations for the mean-square AW amplitude $…
Recent advances in black hole astrophysics, particularly the first visual evidence of a supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy M87 by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), and the detection of an orbiting "hot spot" nearby the event horizon of Sgr A* in the Galactic center by the Gravity Collaboration, require the development of novel numerical methods to understand the underlying plasma microphysics. Non-thermal emission related to such hot spots is conjectured to originate from plasmoids that form due to magnetic reconnection in thin current layers in the innermost accretion zone. …
Extragalactic relativistic jets are composed by charged particles and magnetic fields, as inferred from the synchrotron emission that we receive from them. The Larmor radii of the particles propagating along the magnetic field are much smaller than the scales of the problem, providing the necessary coherence to the system to treat is as a flow. We can thus study them using relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. As a first step, we have studied the structure of steady-state configurations of jets by using numerical simulations. We have used a helical field configuration and have changed different r…
Using a three-dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation, we have reproduced the fast solar wind in a direct and self-consistent manner, based on the wave/turbulence driven scenario. As a natural consequence of Alfvenic perturbations at its base, highly compressional and turbulent fluctuations are generated, leading to heating and acceleration of the solar wind. The analysis of power spectra and structure functions reveals that the turbulence is characterized by its imbalanced (in the sense of outward Alfvenic fluctuations) and anisotropic nature. The density fluctuation ori…
We describe a new Godunov algorithm for relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) that combines a simple, unsplit second order accurate integrator with the constrained transport (CT) method for enforcing the solenoidal constraint on the magnetic field. A variety of approximate Riemann solvers are implemented to compute the fluxes of the conserved variables. The methods are tested with a comprehensive suite of multidimensional problems. These tests have helped us develop a hierarchy of correction steps that are applied when the integration algorithm predicts unphysical states due to errors in th…
