In resistive and viscous magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations we obtain axial jets launched from the innermost magnetosphere of a star-disk system. We found that in a part of the parameter space continuous asymmetric jets, which are propagating in opposite directions, are launched. We compare the speed of propagation and rotation of obtained jets with recent observational results.
We perform a series of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations to investigate how a hot magnetic jet propagates within the dynamical ejecta of a binary neutron star merger, with the focus on how the jet structure depends on the delay time of jet launching with respect to the merger time, $Δt_{\rm jet}$. We find that regardless of the jet launching delay time, a structured jet with an angle-dependent luminosity and Lorentz factor is always formed after the jet breaks out the ejecta. On the other hand, the jet launching delay time has an impact on the jet structure. If the jet launching de…
Using our theory for the production of relativistic outflows, we estimate the jet launching radius and the inferred mass accretion rate for 52 low-power radio-loud AGNs based on the observed jet powers. Our analysis indicates that (1) a significant fraction of the accreted energy is required to convert the accreted mass to relativistic energy particles for the production of the jets near the event horizon, (2) the jets launching radius moves radially toward the horizon as the mass accretion rate or jets power increases, and (3) no jet/outflow formation is possible beyond 44 gravitational radii…
We confirm recent discovery by Cao that in the vicinity of fast rotating black holes jets can be launched centrifugally by cold, magnetized disks even for nearly vertically shaped magnetic flux surfaces. Outflows produced under such extreme conditions are investigated via studying kinematics of test particles in the force-free magnetosphere approximation. Implications of a possibility of magneto-centrifugal launching of very well collimated central outflows around the fast rotating black holes are discussed in the general context of the jet formation scenarios in AGNs.
Strong magnetic fields modify particle motion in the curved space-time of spinning black holes and change the stability conditions of circular orbits. We study conditions for magnetocentrifugal jet launching from accretion disks around black holes, whereby large scale black hole lines anchored in the disk may fling tenuous coronal gas outward. For a Schwarzschild black hole, magnetocentrifugal launching requires that the poloidal component of magnetic fields makes an angle less than $60^\circ$ to the outward direction at the disk surface, similar to the Newtonian case. For prograde rotating di…
The fact that self-confined jets are observed around black holes, neutron stars and young forming stars points to a jet launching mechanism independent of the nature of the central object, namely the surrounding accretion disc. The properties of Jet Emitting Discs (JEDs) are briefly reviewed. It is argued that, within an alpha prescription for the turbulence (anomalous viscosity and diffusivity), the steady-state problem has been solved. Conditions for launching jets are very stringent and require a large scale magnetic field $B_z$ close to equipartition with the total (gas and radiation) pres…
We explore the formation, energetics, and geometry of relativistic jets along with the variability of their central engine. We study both fast and slowly rotating black holes and address our simulations to active galaxy (AGN) centers and gamma ray burst (GRB) engines. The structured jets are postulated to account for emission properties of high energy sources across the mass scale, launched from stellar mass black holes in GRBs and from supermassive black holes in AGNs. Their active cores contain magnetized accretion disks and rotation of the Kerr black hole provides a mechanism for jet launch…
One of the fundamental properties of astrophysical magnetic fields is their ability to change topology through reconnection and in doing so, to release magnetic energy, sometimes violently. In this work, we review recent results on the role of magnetic reconnection and associated heating and particle acceleration in jet/accretion disk systems, namely young stellar objects (YSOs), microquasars, and active galactic nuclei (AGNs).
We present for the first time Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry images of the radio galaxy Cygnus A at the frequency of $86$ $\rm GHz$. Thanks to the high spatial resolution of only ${\sim}200$ Schwarzschild radii ($R_{\bf S}$), such observations provide an extremely detailed view of the nuclear regions in this archetypal object and allow us to derive important constraints for theoretical models describing the launching of relativistic jets. A pixel-based analysis of the jet outflow, which still appears two-sided on the scales probed, was performed. By fitting Gaussian functions to the transve…
We present fully three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic jet launching simulations of a jet source orbiting in a binary system. We consider a time-dependent binary gravitational potential, thus all tidal forces that are experienced in the non-inertial frame of the jet-launching primary. We investigate systems with different binary separation, different mass ratio, and different inclination between the disk plane and the orbital plane. The simulations run over a substantial fraction of the binary orbital period. All simulations show similar local and global non-axisymmetric effects such as local …
The supermassive black hole candidate at the center of M87 drives an ultra-relativistic jet visible on kiloparsec scales, and its large mass and relative proximity allow for event horizon scale imaging with very long baseline interferometry at millimeter wavelengths (mm-VLBI). Recently, relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of black hole accretion flows have proven capable of launching magnetically-dominated jets. We construct time-dependent disc/jet models of the innermost portion of the M87 nucleus by performing relativistic radiative transfer calculations from one such simulat…
The mechanism behind the launching of gamma-ray-burst (GRB) jets remains debated resulting in large uncertainty over the jet composition. Both magnetohydrodynamical and neutrino annihilation models have been proposed for the energy extraction in a black hole/accretion-disc central engine. In particular, for the extreme accretion rates $\dot M\sim 0.1-1$~ M$_\odot$s$^{-1}$ expected for bursts of duration $T\lesssim 100$~s, the disc can be an efficient neutrino emitter. Neutrino-antineutrino annihilation results in an energy deposition rate at the jet that can, in principle, account for the burs…
M87 is one of the best available source for studying the AGN jet-launching region. To enrich our knowledge of this region, with quasi-simultaneous observations using VLBA at 22, 43 and 86 GHz, we capture the images of the radio jet in M87 on a scale within several thousand R s . Based on the images, we analyze the transverse jet structure and obtain the most accurate spectral-index maps of the jet in M87 so far, then for the first time, we compare the results of the two analyses and find a spatial association between the jet collimations and the local enhancement of the density of external med…
We present results of axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations investigating the launching of jets and outflows from a magnetically diffusive accretion disk. The time evolution of the disk structure is self-consistently taken into account. In contrast to previous works we have applied {\em spherical} coordinates for the numerical grid, implying substantial benefits concerning the numerical resolution and the stability of the simulation. Thanks to the new setup we were able to run simulations for more than 150,000 dynamical times on a domain extending 1500 inner disk radii with a reso…
The observed delay of GRB 170817A relative to GW170817 carries significant information about gamma-ray burst (GRB) physics and is subject to intense debate. In this letter, we put forward an approach to discuss the major source of this time delay. First of all, we use the structured jet model to fit the X-ray/optical/radio afterglows of GRB 170817A together with superluminal motion measured by the Very Long Baseline Interferometry. Our structured jet is modelled with angle-dependent energy and baryon loading. It is found that our model can well fit the afterglows of GRB 170817A. After that, th…
We present a model for launching relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) from an accreting Kerr black hole (BH) as an effect of the rotation of the space-time, where the gravitational energy of the accretion disc inside the ergosphere, which can be increased by the BH rotational energy transferred to the disc via closed magnetic field lines that connect the BH to the disc (BH-disc magnetic connection), is converted into jet energy. The main role of the BH-disc magnetic connection is to provide the source of energy for the jets when the mass accretion rate is very low. We assume that …
We perform resistive and viscous MHD simulations of axial jet launching from a magnetized thin accretion disk around a supermassive black hole. We compare the forces in our pseudo-Newtonian simulations for the Paczyński-Wiita and Kluźniak-Lee potentials. The results will help to find magnetic field configurations and physical parameters conducive to jet launching.

We investigate the launching mechanism of relativistic jets from black hole sources, in particular the strong winds from the surrounding accretion disk. Numerical investigations of the disk wind launching - the simulation of the accretion-ejection transition - have so far almost only been done for non-relativistic systems. From these simulations we know that resistivity, or magnetic diffusivity, plays an important role for the launching process. Here, we extend this treatment to general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GR-MHD) applying the resistive GR-MHD code rHARM. Our model setup conside…
In the magneto-centrifugal mechanism for jet formation, accreting neutron stars are assumed to produce relativistic jets only if their surface magnetic field is weak enough ($B \sim 10^8$ G). However, the most common manifestation of neutron stars are pulsars, whose magnetic field distribution peaks at $B \sim 10^{12}$ G. If the neutron star magnetic field has at least this strength at birth, it must decay considerably before jets can be launched in binary systems. We study the magnetic field evolution of a neutron star that accretes matter from the wind of a high-mass stellar companion so tha…
Non-VLBI measurements of Faraday rotation at mm wavelengths have been used to constrain mass accretion rates ($\mdot$) onto supermassive black holes in the centre of the Milky Way and in the centre of M87. We constructed general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics models for these sources that qualitatively well describe their spectra and radio/mm images invoking a coupled jet-disk system. Using general relativistic polarized radiative transfer, we now also model the observed mm rotation measure (RM) of M87. The models are tied to the observed radio flux, however, electron temperature and accret…
We fit the most updated broadband spectral energy distribution from radio to X-rays for NGC 4258 with a coupled accretion-jet model that surrounding a Kerr black hole (BH), where both the jet and the warped H_2O maser disk are assumed to be triggered by a spinning BH through Blandford-Znajek mechanism and Bardeen-Petterson effect respectively. The accretion flow consists with an inner radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) and an outer truncated standard thin disk, where the transition radius R_tr~3*10^3Rg for NGC 4258 based on the width and variability of its narrow Fe K$α$ line. The h…
Variations in the X-ray emission from the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy, Markarian 335 (Mrk 335), are studied on both long and short timescales through observations made between 2006 and 2013 with XMM-Newton, Suzaku and NuSTAR. Changes in the geometry and energetics of the corona that give rise to this variability are inferred through measurements of the relativistically blurred reflection seen from the accretion disc. On long timescales, we find that during the high flux epochs the corona has expanded, covering the inner regions of the accretion disc out to a radius of 26(-7,+10)rg. The corona…
Relativistically blurred reflection from the accretion disc provides a powerful probe of the extreme environments close to supermassive black holes; the inner regions of the accretion flow and the corona that produces the intense X-ray continuum. Techniques by which the geometry and extent of the corona can be measured through the observed X-ray spectrum are reviewed along with the evolution in the structure of the corona that is seen to accompany variations in the X-ray luminosity both on long and short timescales. Detailed analyses of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies Markarian 335 and 1H07…
We propose that sub-Keplerian accretion belts around stars might launch jets. The sub-Keplerian inflow does not form a rotationally supported accretion disk, but it rather reaches the accreting object from a wide solid angle. The basic ingredients of the flow are a turbulent region where the accretion belt interacts with the accreting object via a shear layer, and two avoidance regions on the poles where the accretion rate is very low. A dynamo that is developed in the shear layer amplifies magnetic fields to high values. It is likely that the amplified magnetic fields form polar outflows from…
Relativistic jets are launched from black hole (BH) X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei when the disk accretion rate is below a certain limit (i.e., when the ratio of the accretion rate to the Eddingtion accretion rate, $\dot{m}$, is below about 0.01) but quenched when above. We propose a new paradigm to explain this observed coupling between the jet and the accretion disk by investigating the extraction of the rotational energy of a BH when it is surrounded by different types of accretion disk. At low accretion rates (e.g., when $\dot{m}\lesssim0.1$), the accretion near the event horizo…
We find that the cold gas can be magnetically launched from the disc surface with the help of the radiation pressure if the angular velocity of the radiation pressure dominated accretion disc is greater than a critical value, which decreases with increasing the disc thickness H/R (radiation pressure). This indicates the force exerted by the radiation from the disc indeed helps launching the outflow. The rotational velocity of the gas in the disc depends on the strength of the magnetic field threading the disc and the inclination B_z/B_r of the field line at the disc surface. The launching cond…
We present a novel, relativistic accretion model for accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole. This consists of a purely hydrodynamical mechanism in which, by breaking spherical symmetry, a radially accreting flow transitions into an inflow-outflow configuration. The spherical symmetry is broken by considering that the accreted material is more concentrated on an equatorial belt, leaving the polar regions relatively under-dense. What we have found is a flux-limited accretion regime in which, for a sufficiently large accretion rate, the incoming material chokes at a gravitational bottleneck an…
We present observations by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) of the nearby (z=0.55) GRB 101219B. This burst is a long GRB, with an associated supernova and with a blackbody component detected in the early afterglow observed by the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT). Here we show that the prompt gamma-ray emission has a blackbody spectrum, making this the second such burst observed by Fermi GBM. The properties of the blackbody, together with the redshift and our estimate of the radiative efficiency, makes it possible to calculate the absolute values of the properties of…
The jets observed to emanate from many compact accreting objects may arise from the twisting of the magnetic field threading a differentially rotating accretion disk which acts to magnetically extract angular momentum and energy from the disk. Two main regimes have been discussed, hydromagnetic outflows, which have a significant mass flux and have energy and angular momentum carried by both matter and electromagnetic field and, Poynting outflows, where the mass flux is negligible and energy and angular momentum are carried predominantly by the electromagnetic field. We describe recent theoreti…
Magnetorotational turbulence and magnetically driven disc winds are often considered as separate processes. However, realistic astrophysical discs are expected to be subject to both effects, although possibly at different times and locations. We investigate here the potential link between these two phenomena using a mixed numerical and analytical approach. We show in particular that large-scale MRI modes which dominate strongly magnetised discs (plasma beta~10) naturally produce magnetically driven outflows in the nonlinear regime. We show that these outflows share many similarities with local…
Jets are a commonly observed phenomenon in post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binaries. Due to the orbital motion of the binary, the jet causes variable absorption in the Balmer profiles. In previous work, we have developed spatio-kinematic and radiative transfer models to reproduce the observed Balmer line variability and derive the spatio-kinematic structure of the jet and its mass-loss rate. Here, we apply our jet model to five post-AGB binaries with distinct Hα line variability and diverse orbital properties. Our models fit the Hα line variations very well. We estimate jet mass-loss r…
Astrophysical jets are launched from strongly magnetized systems that host an accretion disk surrounding a central object. The origin of the jet launching magnetic field is one of the open questions for modeling the accretion-ejection process. Here we address the question how to generate the accretion disk magnetization and field structure required for jet launching. Applying the PLUTO code, we present the first resistive MHD simulations of jet launching including a non-scalar accretion disk mean-field $α^2Ω$-dynamo in the context of large scale disk-jet simulations. Essentially, we find the $…
A general relativistic model for the formation and acceleration of low mass-loaded jets from systems containing accreting black holes is presented. The model is based on previous numerical results and theoretical studies in the Newtonian regime, but modified to include the effects of space-time curvature in the vicinity of the event horizon of a spinning black hole. It is argued that the boundary layer between the Keplerian accretion disk and the event horizon is best suited for the formation and acceleration of the accretion-powered jets in active galactic nuclei and micro-quasars. The model …
We perform general relativistic, magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of binary neutron stars in quasi-circular orbit that merge and undergo delayed or prompt collapse to a black hole (BH). The stars are irrotational and modeled using an SLy or an H4 nuclear equation of state. To assess the impact of the initial magnetic field configuration on jet launching, we endow the stars with a purely poloidal magnetic field that is initially unimportant dynamically and is either confined to the stellar interior or extends from the interior into the exterior as in typical pulsars. Consistent with our …
Black holes drive powerful plasma jets to relativistic velocities. This plasma should be collisionless, and self-consistently supplied by pair creation near the horizon. We present general-relativistic collisionless plasma simulations of Kerr-black-hole magnetospheres which begin from vacuum, inject electron-positron pairs based on local unscreened electric fields, and reach steady states with electromagnetically powered Blandford-Znajek jets and persistent current sheets. Particles with negative energy-at-infinity are a general feature, and can contribute significantly to black-hole rotationa…
Approximately 10% of active galactic nuclei exhibit relativistic jets, which are powered by accretion of matter onto super massive black holes. While the measured width profiles of such jets on large scales agree with theories of magnetic collimation, predicted structure on accretion disk scales at the jet launch point has not been detected. We report radio interferometry observations at 1.3mm wavelength of the elliptical galaxy M87 that spatially resolve the base of the jet in this source. The derived size of 5.5 +/- 0.4 Schwarzschild radii is significantly smaller than the innermost edge of …
M87 has been the target of numerous astronomical observations across the electromagnetic spectrum and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) resolved an edge-brightened jet. However, the origin and formation of its jets remain unclear. In our current understand black holes (BH) are the driving engine of jet formation, and indeed the recent Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations revealed a ring-like structure in agreement with theoretical models of accretion onto a rotating Kerr BH. In addition to the spin of the BH being a potential source of energy for the launching mechanism, magnetic …
The galaxy M 87 harbors a kiloparsec-scale relativistic jet, whose origin coincides with a supermassive black hole. Observational mm-VLBI campaigns are capable of resolving the jet-launching region at the scale of the event horizon. In order to provide a context for interpreting these observations, realistic general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamical (GRMHD) models of the accretion flow are constructed. The characteristics of the observed spectral-energy distribution (SED) depend on the shape of the electrons' energy-distribution function (eDF). The dependency on the eDF is omitted in the mode…

Binary neutron star (NSNS) mergers can be sources of gravitational waves coincident with electromagnetic counterpart emission. To solidify their role as multimessenger sources, we present fully 3D, general relativistic, magnetohydrodynamic simulations of spinning NSNSs initially on quasicircular orbits that merge and undergo delayed collapse to a black hole (BH). The NSNSs consist of two identical stars modeled as $Γ=2$ polytropes with spin $χ_{NS}= 0.36$ aligned along the direction of the total orbital angular momentum $L$. Each star is initially threaded by a dynamical unimportant interior d…

We report on an optical photometric and polarimetric campaign on the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) SAX J1808.4-3658 during its 2019 outburst. The emergence of a low-frequency excess in the spectral energy distribution in the form of a red excess above the disc spectrum (seen most prominently in z, i and R-bands) is observed as the outburst evolves. This is indicative of optically thin synchrotron emission due to a jet, as seen previously in this source and in other AMXPs during outburst. At the end of the outburst decay, the source entered a reflaring state. The low-frequency exces…
Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV), the optically thick emission from the innermost accretion flow onto the central supermassive black hole, indicate that RLQs tend to be EUV weak compared to the radio quiet quasars (RQQs); yet the remainder of the optically thick thermal continuum is indistinguishable. The deficit of EUV emission in RLQs has a straightforward interpretation as a missing or a suppressed innermost region of local energy dissipation in the accretion flow. This article is an examination of the evidence for a distribution of magnetic flux tubes i…
We present an analytical solution of a highly magnetized jet/wind flow. The left side of the general force-free jet/wind equation (the "pulsar" equation) is separated into a rotating and a nonrotating term. The two equations with either term can be solved analytically, and the two solutions match each other very well. Therefore, we obtain a general approximate solution of a magnetically dominated jet/wind, which covers from the nonrelativistic to relativistic regimes, with the drift velocity well matching the cold plasma velocity. The acceleration of a jet includes three stages. (1) The jet fl…
We present MHD simulations exploring the launching, acceleration and collimation of jets and disk winds. The evolution of the disk structure is consistently taken into account. Extending our earlier studies, we now consider the self-generation of the magnetic field by an $α^2Ω$ mean-field dynamo. The disk magnetization remains on a rather low level, that helps to evolve the simulations for $T > 10,000$ dynamical time steps on a domain extending 1500 inner disk radii. We find a magnetic field of the inner disk similar to the commonly found open field structure, favoring magneto-centrifugal laun…
Relativistic jets are observed throughout the Universe, strongly impacting their surrounding environments on all physical scales, from Galactic binary systems to galaxies and galaxy clusters. An important avenue to understand the formation of these jets is by characterising the systems and circumstances from which they are launched. Whenever a black hole or neutron star accretes matter, it appears to inevitably result in the launching of a jet, the only exception being the most common type of accreting neutron stars: those with strong ($B \geq 10^{12}$ G) magnetic fields. This exception has cr…
Transverse stratification is a common intrinsic feature of astrophysical jets. There is growing evidence that jets in radio galaxies consist of a fast low density outflow at the jet axis, surrounded by a slower, denser, extended jet. The inner and outer jet components then have a different origin and launching mechanism, making their effective inertia, magnetization, associated energy flux and angular momentum content different as well. Their interface will develop differential rotation, where disruptions may occur. We here investigate the stability of rotating, two-component relativistic outf…
We investigate the jet launching process from accretion disks extending our recent study (paper I) to a truly bipolar setup. We perform axisymmetric MHD simulations of the disk-jet interaction on a computational domain covering both hemispheres, in particular addressing the question of an intrinsically asymmetric origin of jet / counter jet systems. Treating both hemispheres simultaneously, we overcome the equatorial plane symmetry boundary condition used in most previous studies which naturally fosters a symmetric evolution. For the magnetic diffusivity prescription we apply an alpha-parametr…
Blazars show variability on timescales ranging from minutes to years, the former being comparable to and in some cases even shorter than the light-crossing time of the central black hole. The observed gamma-ray lightcurves can be described by a power-law power density spectrum (PDS), with a similar index for both BL Lacs and flat-spectrum radio quasars. We show that this variability can be produced by turbulence in relativistic jets launched by magnetically arrested accretion flows (MADs). We perform radiative transport calculations on the turbulent, highly-magnetized jet launching region of a…
We perform general relativistic, magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of merging binary neutron stars incorporating neutrino transport and magnetic fields. Our new radiative transport module for neutrinos adopts a general relativistic, truncated-moment (M1) formalism. The binaries consist of two identical, irrotational stars modeled by the SLy nuclear equation of state (EOS). They are initially in quasicircular orbit and threaded with a poloidal magnetic field that extends from the stellar interior into the exterior, as in typical pulsars. We insert neutrino processes shortly after the merg…
