Using twisted and formal-local methods, we prove that every separated algebraic space which is the (open/flat) pushout of affine schemes has enough Azumaya algebras. As a corollary we show that, under mild hypothesis, every cohomological Brauer class is representable by an Azumaya algebra away from a closed subset of codimension $\geq 3$, generalizing an early result of Grothendieck. Next, we show that $\mathrm{Br}(X)=\mathrm{Br}'(X)$ when $X$ is an algebraic space obtained from a quasi-projective scheme by contracting a curve. This is the first method of descending an Azumaya algebra along a Chow cover which works in all dimensions. As a corollary, we prove that cohomological Brauer classes are geometric on arbitrary separated surfaces. In higher dimensions, we obtain the first examples of non-quasi-projective algebraic spaces with $\mathrm{Br}(X)=\mathrm{Br}'(X)$.
We extend an argument of S.Lichtenbaum involving codimension one cycles to higher codimensions and obtain a generalization of the well-known Picard-Brauer exact sequence for a smooth variety X. The resulting exact sequence connects the codimension n Chow group of X with a certain "Brauer-like" group.
This paper proves a result on the existence of finite flat scheme covers of Deligne-Mumford stacks. This result is used to prove that a large class of smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks with affine moduli space are quotient stacks, and in the case of quasi-projective moduli space, to reduce the question to one concerning Brauer groups of schemes.
In this article, we construct a natural group homomorphism $$ ψ: \text{Br}(f)\to H^{1}_{et}(S, f_{*}\mathcal{O}_{X}^{\times}/\mathcal{O}_{S}^{\times})$$ for a faithful affine map $f: X \to S$ of noetherian schemes. Here $\text{Br}(f)$ denotes the relative Brauer group of $f.$ We also discuss the behavior of Brauer groups for a subintegral map. Furthermore, we prove a relative version of Kummer's exact sequence.
We reinterpret the residue map for the Brauer group of a smooth variety using a root stack construction and Weil restriction for algebraic stacks, and apply the result to find a geometric representative of for the residue of a Brauer class associated to a conic bundle, or more generally a Brauer-Severi bundle.
A natural question is to determine which algebraic stacks are qoutient stacks. In this paper we give some partial answers and relate it to the old question of whether, for a scheme X, the natural map from the Brauer goup (equivalence classes of Azumaya algebras) to the cohomological Brauer group (the torsion subgroup of $H^2(X,{\mathbb G}_m)$ is surjective.
Let k be a field, X a smooth, projective k-variety. If X is geometrically rational, there is an injective map from the quotient of Brauer groups Br(X)/Br(k) into the first Galois cohomology group of the lattice given by the geometric Picard group. In this note, where the main attention is on smooth compactifications of homogeneous spaces of algebraic k-tori, we show how under some hypotheses the map is onto, and how one may in some special case exhibit concrete generators in Br(X). This is applied to the analysis of counterexamples to the local-global principle for norms in biquadratic extensi…
We prove that every element of order 2 in the Brauer group of a complex Kummer surface X descends to an Enriques quotient of X. In 'generic' cases this gives a bijection between the set Enr(X) of Enriques quotients of X up to isomorphism and the set of Brauer classes of X of order 2. For some K3 surfaces of Picard rank 20 we prove that the fibres of the map from Enr(X) to Br(X)[2] above the non-zero points have the same order.
Extending a result of Schröer on a Grothendieck question in the context of complex analytic spaces, we prove that the surjectivity of the Brauer map $δ: Br(X) \rightarrow H_{\rm ét}^2(X,\mathbb{G}_{m, X})_{\rm tor}$ for algebraic schemes depends on their étale homotopy type. We use properties of algebraic $K(π, 1)$ spaces to apply this to some classes of proper and smooth algebraic schemes. In particular we recover a result of Hoobler and Berkovich for abelian varieties. Further, we give an additional condition for the surjectivity of $δ$ which involves pro-universal covers. All proposed condi…
Let $X$ be a projective and smooth variety over a field $k$. The goal of this paper is to prove that the cokernel of the canonical map $Br(X)\to Br(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ has a finite exponent. Both groups are natural invariants arising from consideration of the Tate conjecture of divisors over $X$.
Added lemma provided by Michel Brion. Other (minor) changes. Submitted version. Let k be any field, let X' be a projective and geometrically integral k-scheme and let Y' be a finite closed subscheme of X'. If f: Y'-> Y is a schematically dominant morphism between finite k-schemes and X is obtained by pinching X' along Y' via f, we describe the kernel (and, in certain cases, the cokernel) of the induced pullback map Br_{1}X -> Br_{1}X' between the corresponding algebraic (cohomological) Brauer groups of X and X'_solely_ in terms of the Brauer groups of the residue fields of Y and Y' and the Ami…
We determine generators for the codimension 1 Chow group of the moduli spaces of genus zero stable maps to flag varieties G/P. In the case of SL flags, we find all relations between our generators, showing that they essentially come from $\bar M_{0,n}$. In addition, we analyze the codimension 2 classes on the moduli spaces of stable maps to Grassmannians and prove a new codimension 2 relation. This will lead to a partial reconstruction theorem for the Grassmannian of 2 planes.
The class in the Brauer group of a quaternion algebra over a field is 2-torsion. We study the following question: Which 2-torsion elements of the Brauer group of a complex function field are representable by quaternion algebras? Using intersection theory to show that a certain cohomology class (on a smooth projective model) is the class of an algebraic cycle, we arrive at an obstruction, defined on a subgroup of the 2-torsion of the Brauer group, to representability by quaternion algebras. For the function fields of some complex threefolds, the obstruction map is computed and found to be nontr…
The Abstract for this revised version is the following: Let k be a number field, let C be a smooth, projective and geometrically integral k-curve and let p:X --> C be a Severi-Brauer k-fibration of squarefree index. Various authors have studied the cokernel of the natural map CH_{0}(X/C)-->\bigoplus_{v}CH_{0}(X_{v}/C_{v}), where CH_{0}(X/C) is the kernel of p_{*}:CH_{0}(X)-->CH_{0}(C). In this paper I obtain an exact sequence which relates the Tate-Shafarevich group of the kernel of the above map to the Tate-Shafarevich group of the Neron-Severi torus of X. I then obtain conditions under which…
We study the space of stability conditions attached to the derived category of $A_{n}$-mod for $A_{n}$ the Brauer tree algebra of the line with $n$ edges. These algebras arise in the study of cyclic defect blocks of group algebras, and they are also related to the zig-zag algebras introduced by Huerfano and Khovanov. We show that for the Brauer tree algebra $A_{3}$, the connected component of the natural heart of the space of stability conditions is simply connected. However, unlike certains examples arising in geometry, the Bridgeland homomorphism is not a covering map.
We prove that if $X$ is a smooth projective variety of dimension greater than 1 over a field $K$ of characteristic zero such that $\operatorname{Pic}(X_{\bar{K}}) = \mathbb{Z}$ and $X_{\bar{K}}$ is simply connected, then the natural map $ρ: \operatorname{Aut}(X) \to \operatorname{Aut}(\operatorname{Sym}^d(X))$ is an isomorphism for every $d > 0$. We also partially compute the motivic zeta function of a Severi-Brauer surface and explain some relations between the classes of Severi-Brauer varieties in the Grothendieck ring of varieties.

We construct all codimension 1 multi-germs of maps (k^n,T)-->(k^p,0) with n > p-2, (n,p) nice dimensions, k = R or C, by augmentation and concetenation operations, starting from mon-germs (|T|=1). As an application, we prove general results for multi-germs of corank <2: every one has a real form with real perturbation carrying the vanishing homology of the complexification, every one is quasihomogeneous, and when n=p-1 every one has image Milnor number equal to 1 (the comparable result for n>p-1 being already known).
The space of holomorphic foliations of codimension one and degree $d\geq 2$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ ($n\geq 3$) has an irreducible component whose general element can be written as a pullback $F^*\mathcal{F}$, where $\mathcal{F}$ is a general foliation of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^2$ and $F:\mathbb{P}^n\dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^2$ is a general rational linear map. We give a polynomial formula for the degrees of such components.
Kyoji Saito defined a residue map from the logarithmic differential 1-forms along a reduced complex analytic hypersurface to the meromorphic functions on the hypersurface. He studied the condition that the image of this map coincides with the weakly holomorphic functions, that is, with the functions on the normalization. With Michel Granger, the author proved that this condition is equivalent to the hypersurface being normal crossing in codimension one. In this article, the condition is given a natural interpretation in terms of regular differential forms beyond the hypersurface case. For redu…
We present a conjectural formula describing the cokernel of the Albanese map of zero-cycles of smooth projective varieties $X$ over $p$-adic fields in terms of the Néron-Severi group and provide a proof under additional assumptions on an integral model of $X$. The proof depends on a non-degeneracy result of Brauer-Manin pairing due to Saito-Sato and on Gabber-de Jong's comparison result of cohomological- and Azumaya-Brauer groups. We will also mention the local-global problem of the Albanese-cokernel; the abelian group on the "local side" turns out to be a finite group.
Let $\otimes$ be the map which classifies the tensor product of two line bundles, an extension of this map to the space of all codimension 1 algebraic cycles is constructed. It is proved that this extension cannot exist in codimension greater than 1.
In this paper I investigate minimal surfaces of general type with p_g=5, q=0 for which the 1-canonical map is a birational morphism onto a surface in P^4 (so called canonical surfaces in P^4) via a structure theorem for the Hilbert resolutions of the canonical rings of the afore-mentioned surfaces, viewed as Gorenstein algebras of codimension 2 over the homogeneous coordinate ring of P^4. I discuss how the ring structure of such an algebra is encoded in its resolution. Among other things I show how this method can be applied to analyze the moduli space of canonical surfaces with p_g=5, q=0, K^…
We prove that the preimage of a germ of a singular analytic hypersurface under a germ of a finite holomorphic map $g: (\mathbb{C}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{C}^n,0)$ is again singular. This provides a generalization of previous results of this nature by Ebenfelt-Rothschild [Comm. Anal. Geom. 15 (2007), no. 2, 491-507], Lebl [arXiv:0812.2498], and Denkowski [Manuscripta Math. 149 (2016), no. 1-2, 83-91]. The same statement is proved for pullbacks of singular codimension one holomorphic foliations.
This note is the sequel to [A note on secondary K-theory. Algebra and Number Theory 10 (2016), no. 4, 887-906]. Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we prove that the canonical map from the derived Brauer group to the secondary Grothendieck ring has the following injectivity properties: in the case of a regular integral quasi-compact quasi-separated scheme, it is injective; in the case of an integral normal Noetherian scheme with a single isolated singularity, it distinguishes any two derived Brauer classes whose difference is of infinite order. As an application, we show…
