We consider Brownian motion under resetting in higher dimensions for the case when the return of the particle to the origin occurs at a constant speed. We investigate the behavior of the probability density function (PDF) and of the mean-squared displacement (MSD) in this process. We study two different resetting protocols: exponentially distributed time intervals between the resetting events (Poissonian resetting) and resetting at fixed time intervals (deterministic resetting). We moreover discuss a general problem of the invariance of the PDF with respect to the return speed, as observed in the one-dimensional system for Poissonian resetting, and show, that this one dimensional situation is the only one in which such an invariance can be found. However, the invariance of the MSD can still be observed in higher dimensions.
We study two Brownian particles in dimension $d=1$, diffusing under an interacting resetting mechanism to a fixed position. The particles are subject to a constant drift, which biases the Brownian particles toward each other. We derive the steady-state distributions and study the late time relaxation behavior to the stationary state.
We consider a random walker on a ring, subjected to resetting at Poisson-distributed times to the initial position (the walker takes the shortest path along the ring to the initial position at resetting times). In the case of a Brownian random walker the mean first-completion time of a turn is expressed in closed form as a function of the resetting rate. The value is shorter than in the ordinary process if the resetting rate is low enough. Moreover, the mean first-completion time of a turn can be minimised in the resetting rate. At large time the distribution of winding numbers does not reach …
Random walks with stochastic resetting provides a treatable framework to study interesting features about central-place motion. In this work, we introduce non-instantaneous resetting as a two-state model being a combination of an exploring state where the walker moves randomly according to a propagator and a returning state where the walker performs a ballistic motion with constant velocity towards the origin. We study the emerging transport properties for two types of reset time probability density functions (PDFs): exponential and Pareto. In the first case, we find the stationary distributio…
We consider a single Brownian particle in one dimension in a medium at a constant temperature in the underdamped regime. We stochastically reset the position of the Brownian particle to a fixed point in the space with a constant rate $r$ whereas its velocity evolves irrespective of the position of the particle and stochastic resetting mechanism. The nonequilibrium steady state of the position distribution is studied for this model system. Further, we study the distribution of the position of the particle in the finite time and the approach to the nonequilibrium steady state distribution with t…
We study experimentally and theoretically the optimal mean time needed by a free diffusing Brownian particle to reach a target at a distance L from an initial position in the presence of resetting. Both the initial position and the resetting position are Gaussian distributed with width $σ$. We derived and tested two resetting protocols, one with a periodic and one with random (Poissonian) resetting times. We computed and measured the full first-passage probability distribution that displays spectacular spikes immediately after each resetting time for close targets. We study the optimal mean fi…
We study the position distribution of an active Brownian particle (ABP) in the presence of stochastic resetting in two spatial dimensions. We consider three different resetting protocols : (I) where both position and orientation of the particle are reset, (II) where only the position is reset, and (III) where only the orientation is reset with a certain rate $r.$ We show that in the first two cases the ABP reaches a stationary state. Using a renewal approach, we calculate exactly the stationary marginal position distributions in the limiting cases when the resetting rate $r$ is much larger or …
We investigate an intermittent stochastic process in which the diffusive motion with time-dependent diffusion coefficient $D(t) \sim t^{α-1}$ with $α> 0$ (scaled Brownian motion) is stochastically reset to its initial position, and starts anew. \color{black} In the present work we discuss the situation, in which the memory on the value of the diffusion coefficient at a resetting time is erased, so that the whole process is a fully renewal one. The situation when the resetting of coordinate does not affect the diffusion coefficient's time dependence is considered in the other work of this serie…
A stochastic process with movement, return, and rest phases is considered in this paper. For the movement phase, the particles move following the dynamics of Gaussian process or ballistic type of Lévy walk, and the time of each movement is random. For the return phase, the particles will move back to the origin with a constant velocity or acceleration or under the action of a harmonic force after each movement, so that this phase can also be treated as a non-instantaneous resetting. After each return, a rest with a random time at the origin follows. The asymptotic behaviors of the mean squared…
We study experimentally, numerically and theoretically the optimal mean time needed by a Brownian particle, freely diffusing either in one or two dimensions, to reach, within a tolerance radius $R_{\text tol}$, a target at a distance $L$ from an initial position in the presence of resetting. The reset position is Gaussian distributed with width $σ$. We derived and tested two resetting protocols, one with a periodic and one with random (Poissonian) resetting times. We computed and measured the full first-passage probability distribution that displays spectacular spikes immediately after each re…
We study the statistics of the first-passage time of a single run and tumble particle (RTP) in one spatial dimension, with or without resetting, to a fixed target located at $L>0$. First, we compute the first-passage time distribution of a free RTP, without resetting nor in a confining potential, but averaged over the initial position drawn from an arbitrary distribution $p(x)$. Recent experiments used a non-instantaneous resetting protocol that motivated us to study in particular the case where $p(x)$ corresponds to the stationary non-Boltzmann distribution of an RTP in the presence of a harm…
We investigate an intermittent stochastic process, in which the diffusive motion with time-dependent diffusion coefficient $D(t)\sim t^{α-1}$, $α>0$ (scaled Brownian motion), is stochastically reset to its initial position and starts anew. The resetting follows a renewal process with either exponential or power-law distribution of the waiting times between successive renewals. The resetting events, however, do not affect the time dependence of the diffusion coefficient, so that the whole process appears to be a non-renewal one. We discuss the mean squared displacement of a particle and probabi…
We study the dynamics of a Brownian motion with a diffusion coefficient which evolves stochastically. We first study this process in arbitrary dimensions and find the scaling form and the corresponding scaling function of the position distribution. We find that the tails of the distribution have exponential tails with a ballistic scaling. We then introduce the resetting dynamics where, at a constant rate, both the position and the diffusion coefficient are reset to zero. This eventually leads to a nonequilibrium stationary state, which we study in arbitrary dimensions. In stark contrast to ord…
We consider the dynamical evolution of a Brownian particle undergoing stochastic resetting, meaning that after random periods of time it is forced to return to the starting position. The intervals after which the random motion is stopped are drawn from a Gamma distribution of shape parameter $α$ and scale parameter $r$, while the return motion is performed at constant velocity $v$, so that the time cost for a reset is correlated to the last position occupied during the stochastic phase. We show that for any value of $α$ the process reaches a non-equilibrium steady state and unveil the dependen…
We study the distribution of additive functionals of reset Brownian motion, a variation of normal Brownian motion in which the path is interrupted at a given rate and placed back to a given reset position. Our goal is two-fold: (1) For general functionals, we derive a large deviation principle in the presence of resetting and identify the large deviation rate function in terms of a variational formula involving large deviation rate functions without resetting. (2) For three examples of functionals (positive occupation time, area and absolute area), we investigate the effect of resetting by com…
We study the statistical properties of first-passage time functionals of a one dimensional Brownian motion in the presence of stochastic resetting. A first-passage functional is defined as $V=\int_0^{t_f} Z[x(τ)]$ where $t_f$ is the first-passage time of a reset Brownian process $x(τ)$, i.e., the first time the process crosses zero. In here, the particle is reset to $x_R>0$ at a constant rate $r$ starting from $x_0>0$ and we focus on the following functionals: (i) local time $T_{loc} = \int _0^{t_f}d τ~ δ(x-x_R)$, (ii) residence time $T_{res} = \int _0^{t_f} d τ~θ(x-x_R)$, and (iii) functional…
We introduce a resetting Brownian bridge as a simple model to study search processes where the total search time $t_f$ is finite and the searcher returns to its starting point at $t_f$. This is simply a Brownian motion with a Poissonian resetting rate $r$ to the origin which is constrained to start and end at the origin at time $t_f$. We first provide a rejection-free algorithm to generate such resetting bridges in all dimensions by deriving an effective Langevin equation with an explicit space-time dependent drift $\tilde μ({\bf x},t)$ and resetting rate $\tilde r({\bf x}, t)$. We also study …
We study the effects of stochastic resetting on geometric Brownian motion (GBM), a canonical stochastic multiplicative process for non-stationary and non-ergodic dynamics. Resetting is a sudden interruption of a process, which consecutively renews its dynamics. We show that, although resetting renders GBM stationary, the resulting process remains non-ergodic. Quite surprisingly, the effect of resetting is pivotal in manifesting the non-ergodic behavior. In particular, we observe three different long-time regimes: a quenched state, an unstable and a stable annealed state depending on the resett…

We consider motion of an overdamped Brownian particle subject to stochastic resetting in one dimension. In contrast to the usual setting where the particle is instantaneously reset to a preferred location (say, the origin), here we consider a finite time resetting process facilitated by an external linear potential $V(x)=λ|x|~ (λ>0)$. When resetting occurs, the trap is switched on and the particle experiences a force $-\partial_x V(x)$ which helps the particle to return to the resetting location. The trap is switched off as soon as the particle makes a first passage to the origin. Subsequently…
We study the Brownian motion of a particle in a bounded circular 2-dimensional domain, in search for a stationary target on the boundary of the domain. The process switches between two modes: one where it performs a two-dimensional diffusion inside the circle and one where it travels along the one-dimensional boundary. During the diffusion, the Brownian particle resets to its initial position with a constant rate $r$. The Fokker-Planck formalism allows us to calculate the mean time to absorption (MTA) as well as the optimal resetting rate for which the MTA is minimized. From the derived analyt…
The equilibrium properties of a system of passive diffusing particles in an external magnetic field are unaffected by the Lorentz force. In contrast, active Brownian particles exhibit steady-state phenomena that depend on both the strength and the polarity of the applied magnetic field. The intriguing effects of the Lorentz force, however, can only be observed when out-of-equilibrium density gradients are maintained in the system. To this end, we use the method of stochastic resetting on active Brownian particles in two dimensions by resetting them to the line $x=0$ at a constant rate and peri…

In the past few years, stochastic resetting has become a subject of immense interest. Most of the theoretical studies so far focused on instantaneous resetting which is, however, a major impediment to practical realization or experimental verification in the field. This is because in the real world, taking a particle from one place to another requires finite time and thus a generalization of the existing theory to incorporate non-instantaneous resetting is very much in need. In this paper, we propose a method of resetting which involves non-instantaneous returns facilitated by an external conf…

We study the dynamics of overdamped Brownian particles diffusing in conservative force fields and undergoing stochastic resetting to a given location with a generic space-dependent rate of resetting. We present a systematic approach involving path integrals and elements of renewal theory that allows to derive analytical expressions for a variety of statistics of the dynamics such as (i) the propagator prior to first reset; (ii) the distribution of the first-reset time, and (iii) the spatial distribution of the particle at long times. We apply our approach to several representative and hitherto…
We study continuous time random walks (CTRW) with power law distribution of waiting times under resetting which brings the walker back to the origin, with a power-law distribution of times between the resetting events. Two situations are considered. Under complete resetting, the CTRW after the resetting event starts anew, with a new waiting time, independent of the prehistory. Under incomplete resetting, the resetting of the coordinate does not influence the waiting time until the next jump. We focus on the behavior of the mean squared displacement (MSD) of the walker from its initial position…
In this Topical Review we consider stochastic processes under resetting, which have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. We begin with the simple example of a diffusive particle whose position is reset randomly in time with a constant rate $r$, which corresponds to Poissonian resetting, to some fixed point (e.g. its initial position). This simple system already exhibits the main features of interest induced by resetting: (i) the system reaches a nontrivial nonequilibrium stationary state (ii) the mean time for the particle to reach a target is finite and has a minimum, optimal, value …
The effects of Poissonian resetting at a constant rate $r$ on the reaction time between a Brownian particle and a stochastically gated target are studied. The target switches between a reactive state and a non-reactive one. We calculate the mean time at which the particle subject to resetting hits the target for the first time, while the latter is in the reactive state. The search time is minimum at a resetting rate that depends on the target transition rates. When the target relaxation rate is much larger than both the resetting rate and the inverse diffusion time, the system becomes equivale…
We compute exactly the mean perimeter and the mean area of the convex hull of a $2$-d Brownian motion of duration $t$ and diffusion constant $D$, in the presence of resetting to the origin at a constant rate $r$. We show that for any $t$, the mean perimeter is given by $\langle L(t)\rangle= 2 π\sqrt{\frac{D}{r}}\, f_1(rt)$ and the mean area is given by $\langle A(t) \rangle= 2π\frac{D}{r}\, f_2(rt)$ where the scaling functions $f_1(z)$ and $f_2(z)$ are computed explicitly. For large $t\gg 1/r$, the mean perimeter grows extremely slowly as $\langle L(t)\rangle \propto \ln (rt)$ with time. Likew…
The canonical Evans--Majumdar model for diffusion with stochastic resetting to the origin assumes that resetting takes zero time: upon resetting the diffusing particle is teleported back to the origin to start its motion anew. However, in reality, getting from one place to another takes a finite amount of time which must be accounted for as diffusion with resetting already serves as a model for a myriad of processes in physics and beyond. Here we consider a situation where upon resetting the diffusing particle returns to the origin at a finite (rather than infinite) speed. This creates a coupl…
