We consider the dynamical evolution of a Brownian particle undergoing stochastic resetting, meaning that after random periods of time it is forced to return to the starting position. The intervals after which the random motion is stopped are drawn from a Gamma distribution of shape parameter $α$ and scale parameter $r$, while the return motion is performed at constant velocity $v$, so that the time cost for a reset is correlated to the last position occupied during the stochastic phase. We show that for any value of $α$ the process reaches a non-equilibrium steady state and unveil the dependence of the stationary distribution on $v$. Interestingly, there is a single value of $α$ for which the steady state is unaffected by the return velocity. Furthermore, we consider the efficiency of the search process by computing explicitly the mean first passage time. All our findings are corroborated by numerical simulations.
We consider Brownian motion under resetting in higher dimensions for the case when the return of the particle to the origin occurs at a constant speed. We investigate the behavior of the probability density function (PDF) and of the mean-squared displacement (MSD) in this process. We study two different resetting protocols: exponentially distributed time intervals between the resetting events (Poissonian resetting) and resetting at fixed time intervals (deterministic resetting). We moreover discuss a general problem of the invariance of the PDF with respect to the return speed, as observed in …
Random walks with stochastic resetting provides a treatable framework to study interesting features about central-place motion. In this work, we introduce non-instantaneous resetting as a two-state model being a combination of an exploring state where the walker moves randomly according to a propagator and a returning state where the walker performs a ballistic motion with constant velocity towards the origin. We study the emerging transport properties for two types of reset time probability density functions (PDFs): exponential and Pareto. In the first case, we find the stationary distributio…
The canonical Evans--Majumdar model for diffusion with stochastic resetting to the origin assumes that resetting takes zero time: upon resetting the diffusing particle is teleported back to the origin to start its motion anew. However, in reality, getting from one place to another takes a finite amount of time which must be accounted for as diffusion with resetting already serves as a model for a myriad of processes in physics and beyond. Here we consider a situation where upon resetting the diffusing particle returns to the origin at a finite (rather than infinite) speed. This creates a coupl…
A stochastic process with movement, return, and rest phases is considered in this paper. For the movement phase, the particles move following the dynamics of Gaussian process or ballistic type of Lévy walk, and the time of each movement is random. For the return phase, the particles will move back to the origin with a constant velocity or acceleration or under the action of a harmonic force after each movement, so that this phase can also be treated as a non-instantaneous resetting. After each return, a rest with a random time at the origin follows. The asymptotic behaviors of the mean squared…
We consider a random two-phase process which we call a reset-return one. The particle starts its motion at the origin. The first, displacement, phase corresponds to a stochastic motion of a particle and is finished at a resetting event. The second, return, phase corresponds to the particle's motion towards the origin from the position it attained at the end of the displacement phase. This motion towards the origin takes place according to a given equation of motion. The whole process is a renewal one. We provide general expressions for the stationary probability density function of the particl…
We study the statistics of the first-passage time of a single run and tumble particle (RTP) in one spatial dimension, with or without resetting, to a fixed target located at $L>0$. First, we compute the first-passage time distribution of a free RTP, without resetting nor in a confining potential, but averaged over the initial position drawn from an arbitrary distribution $p(x)$. Recent experiments used a non-instantaneous resetting protocol that motivated us to study in particular the case where $p(x)$ corresponds to the stationary non-Boltzmann distribution of an RTP in the presence of a harm…
Motion under stochastic resetting serves to model a myriad of processes in physics and beyond, but in most cases studied to date resetting to the origin was assumed to take zero time or a time decoupled from the spatial position at the resetting moment. However, in our world, getting from one place to another always takes time and places that are further away take more time to be reached. We thus set off to extend the theory of stochastic resetting such that it would account for this inherent spatio-temporal coupling. We consider a particle that starts at the origin and follows a certain law o…
In this paper we consider the one-dimensional dynamical evolution of a particle traveling at constant speed and performing, at a given rate, random reversals of the velocity direction. The particle is subject to stochastic resetting, meaning that at random times it is forced to return to the starting point. Here we consider a return mechanism governed by a deterministic law of motion, so that the time cost required to return is correlated to the position occupied at the time of the reset. We show that in such conditions the process reaches a stationary state which, for some kinds of determinis…
We consider motion of an overdamped Brownian particle subject to stochastic resetting in one dimension. In contrast to the usual setting where the particle is instantaneously reset to a preferred location (say, the origin), here we consider a finite time resetting process facilitated by an external linear potential $V(x)=λ|x|~ (λ>0)$. When resetting occurs, the trap is switched on and the particle experiences a force $-\partial_x V(x)$ which helps the particle to return to the resetting location. The trap is switched off as soon as the particle makes a first passage to the origin. Subsequently…
A diffusing lion pursues a diffusing lamb when both of them are allowed to get back to their homes intermittently. Identifying the system with a pair of vicious random walkers, we study their dynamics under Poissonian and sharp resetting. In absence of any resets, the location of intersection of the two walkers follows a Cauchy distribution. In presence of resetting, the distribution of the location of annihilation is composed of two parts: one in which the trajectories cross without being reset (center) and the other where trajectories are reset at least once before they cross each other (tai…
In the past few years, stochastic resetting has become a subject of immense interest. Most of the theoretical studies so far focused on instantaneous resetting which is, however, a major impediment to practical realization or experimental verification in the field. This is because in the real world, taking a particle from one place to another requires finite time and thus a generalization of the existing theory to incorporate non-instantaneous resetting is very much in need. In this paper, we propose a method of resetting which involves non-instantaneous returns facilitated by an external conf…
Inspired by many examples in nature, stochastic resetting of random processes has been studied extensively in the past decade. In particular, various models of stochastic particle motion were considered where upon resetting the particle is returned to its initial position. Here we generalize the model of diffusion with resetting to account for situations where a particle is returned only a fraction of its distance to the origin, e.g., half way. We show that this model always attains a steady-state distribution which can be written as an infinite sum of independent, but not identical, Laplace r…
This paper presents a diffusion process with a novel resetting mechanism in which the amplitude of the process is instantaneously converted to a proportion of its value at random times. This model is described by a Langevin equation with both additive Gaussian white noise and multiplicative Poisson shot noise terms. The distribution function obeys a pantograph equation, a functional partial differential equation evaluated at two amplitudes simultaneously. From this equation the exact statistical moments and steady-state distribution of the process are calculated. The distribution interpolates …
Returning a system to a desired state under a force field involves a thermodynamic cost, i.e., {\it work}. This cost fluctuates for a small-scale system from one experimental realization to another. We introduce a general framework to determine the work distribution for returning a system facilitated by a confining potential with its minimum at the restart location. The general strategy, based on average over {\it resetting pathways}, constitutes a robust method to gain access to the statistical information of observables from resetting systems. We exploit paradigmatic setups, where explicit c…
We consider a particle undergoing run and tumble dynamics, in which its velocity stochastically reverses, in one dimension. We study the addition of a Poissonian resetting process occurring with rate $r$. At a reset event the particle's position is returned to the resetting site $X_r$ and the particle's velocity is reversed with probability $η$. The case $η= 1/2$ corresponds to position resetting and velocity randomization whereas $η=0$ corresponds to position-only resetting. We show that, beginning from symmetric initial conditions, the stationary state does not depend on $η$ i.e. it is indep…
We propose a novel method of reconstructing the topology and interaction functions for a general oscillator network. An ensemble of initial phases and the corresponding instantaneous frequencies is constructed by repeating random phase-resets of the system dynamics. The desired details of network structure are then revealed by appropriately averaging over the ensemble. The method is applicable for a wide class of networks with arbitrary emergent dynamics, including full synchrony.
The spectral theory of random walks on networks of arbitrary topology can be readily extended to study random walks and Lévy flights subject to resetting on these structures. When a discrete-time process is stochastically brought back from time to time to its starting node, the mean search time needed to reach another node of the network may be significantly decreased. In other cases, however, resetting is detrimental to search. Using the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the transition matrix defining the process without resetting, we derive a general criterion for finite networks that establis…

We study discrete-time random walks on arbitrary networks with first-passage resetting processes. To the end, a set of nodes are chosen as observable nodes, and the walker is reset instantaneously to a given resetting node whenever it hits either of observable nodes. We derive exact expressions of the stationary occupation probability, the average number of resets in the long time, and the mean first-passage time between arbitrary two non-observable nodes. We show that all the quantities can be expressed in terms of the fundamental matrix $\textbf{Z}=(\textbf{I}-\textbf{Q})^{-1}$, where $\text…
We explore the effect of stochastic resetting on the first-passage properties of space-dependent diffusion in presence of a constant bias. In our analytically tractable model system, a particle diffusing in a linear potential $U(x)\proptoμ|x|$ with a spatially varying diffusion coefficient $D(x)=D_0|x|$ undergoes stochastic resetting, i.e., returns to its initial position $x_0$ at random intervals of time, with a constant rate $r$. Considering an absorbing boundary placed at $x_a<x_0$, we first derive an exact expression of the survival probability of the diffusing particle in the Laplace spac…
One of the characteristic features of a stochastic process under resetting is that the probability density converges to a nonequilibrium stationary state (NESS). In addition, the approach to the stationary state exhibits a dynamical phase transition, which can be interpreted as a traveling front separating spatial regions for which the probability density has relaxed to the NESS from those where it has not. One can establish the existence of the phase transition by carrying out an asymptotic expansion of the exact solution. In this paper we develop an alternative, direct method for characteriz…
We put forward a novel approach to study the evolution of an arbitrary open quantum system under a resetting process. Using the framework of renewal equations, we find a universal behavior for the mean first return time that goes beyond unitary dynamics and Markovian measurements. Our results show a non-trivial behavior of the mean switching times with the mean measurement time $τ$, which permits tuning $τ$ for minimizing the mean transition time between states. We complement our results with a numerical analysis and we benchmark the results against the corresponding analytical study for low d…
We study the dynamics of overdamped Brownian particles diffusing in conservative force fields and undergoing stochastic resetting to a given location with a generic space-dependent rate of resetting. We present a systematic approach involving path integrals and elements of renewal theory that allows to derive analytical expressions for a variety of statistics of the dynamics such as (i) the propagator prior to first reset; (ii) the distribution of the first-reset time, and (iii) the spatial distribution of the particle at long times. We apply our approach to several representative and hitherto…
We introduce a resetting Brownian bridge as a simple model to study search processes where the total search time $t_f$ is finite and the searcher returns to its starting point at $t_f$. This is simply a Brownian motion with a Poissonian resetting rate $r$ to the origin which is constrained to start and end at the origin at time $t_f$. We first provide a rejection-free algorithm to generate such resetting bridges in all dimensions by deriving an effective Langevin equation with an explicit space-time dependent drift $\tilde μ({\bf x},t)$ and resetting rate $\tilde r({\bf x}, t)$. We also study …

We study the effects of an intermittent harmonic potential of strength $μ= μ_0 ν$ -- that switches on and off stochastically at a constant rate $γ$, on an overdamped Brownian particle with damping coefficient $ν$. This can be thought of as a realistic model for realisation of stochastic resetting. We show that this dynamics admits a stationary solution in all parameter regimes and compute the full time dependent variance for the position distribution and find the characteristic relaxation time. We find the exact non-equilibrium stationary state distributions in the limits -- (i) $γ\llμ_0 $ whi…
In this paper we use asymptotic analysis to determine the steady-state mean number of resources in each of $N$ small interior targets within a three-dimensional bounded domain. The accumulation of resources is based on multiple rounds of search-and-capture events; whenever a searcher finds a target it delivers a resource packet to the target, after which it escapes and returns to its initial position (resetting after capture). The searcher is then resupplied with cargo and a new search process is initiated after a random delay. Assuming that the accumulation of resources is counterbalanced by …
