We put forward a novel approach to study the evolution of an arbitrary open quantum system under a resetting process. Using the framework of renewal equations, we find a universal behavior for the mean first return time that goes beyond unitary dynamics and Markovian measurements. Our results show a non-trivial behavior of the mean switching times with the mean measurement time $τ$, which permits tuning $τ$ for minimizing the mean transition time between states. We complement our results with a numerical analysis and we benchmark the results against the corresponding analytical study for low dimensional systems under unitary \textit{and} open system dynamics.
We study a non-interacting quantum particle, moving on a one-dimensional lattice, which is subjected to repetitive measurements. We investigate the consequence when such motion is interrupted and restarted from the same initial configuration, known as the quantum resetting problem. We show that such systems can be described by the time evolution under certain time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We construct two such Hamiltonians and compare the results with the exact dynamics. Using this effective non-Hermitian description we evaluate the timescale of the survival probability as well as…
A powerful strategy to accelerate quantum-walk-based search algorithms leverages on resetting protocols, where a detector monitors a target site and the evolution of the walker is restarted if no detection occurs within a fixed time interval. The optimal resetting rate can be extracted from the time evolution of the probability $S(t)$ that the detector has not clicked up to time $t$. We analyze $S(t)$ for a quantum walk on a one-dimensional lattice when the coupling between sites decays algebraically as $d^{-α}$ with the distance $d$, for $α\in(0,\infty)$. At long times, $S(t)$ decays with a u…
We investigate the dynamics of a non-interacting spin system, undergoing coherent Rabi oscillations, in the presence of stochastic resetting. We show that resetting generally induces long-range quantum and classical correlations both in the emergent dissipative dynamics and in the non-equilibrium stationary state. Moreover, for the case of conditional reset protocols -- where the system is reinitialized to a state dependent on the outcome of a preceding measurement -- we show that, in the thermodynamic limit, the spin system can feature collective behavior which results in a phenomenology remi…
Quantum measurement of a system can change its mean energy, as well as entropy. A selective measurement (classical or quantum) can be used as a "Maxwell's demon" to power a single-temperature heat engine, by decreasing the entropy. Quantum mechanically, so can a non-selective measurement, despite increasing the entropy of a thermal state. The maximal amount of work extractable following the measurement is given by the change in free energy: $W_{max}^{(non-)sel.}=ΔE_{meas}-T_{Bath}ΔS_{meas}^{(non-)sel.}$. This follows from the "generalized 2nd law for nonequilibrium initial state" [Hasegawa et.…
Quantum systems evolving unitarily and subject to quantum measurements exhibit various types of non-equilibrium phase transitions, arising from the competition between unitary evolution and measurements. Dissipative phase transitions in steady states of time-independent Liouvillians and measurement induced phase transitions at the level of quantum trajectories are two primary examples of such transitions. Investigating a many-body spin system subject to periodic resetting measurements, we argue that many-body dissipative Floquet dynamics provides a natural framework to analyze both types of tr…
We propose a protocol that allows both the creation and distribution of entanglement, resulting in two distant parties (Alice and Bob) conclusively sharing a bipartite Bell State. The system considered is a graph of three-level objects ("qutrits") coupled by SU(3) exchange operators. The protocol begins with a third party (Charlie) encoding two lattice sites in unentangled states, and allowing unitary evolution under time. Alice and Bob perform a projective measurement on their respective qutrits at a given time, and obtain a maximally-entangled Bell state with a certain probablility. We also …
We consider quantum many-body dynamics under quantum measurements, where the measurement-induced phase transitions (MIPs) occur when changing the frequency of the measurement. In this work, we consider the robustness of the MIP for long-range interaction that decays as $r^{-α}$ with distance $r$. The effects of long-range interactions are classified into two regimes: (i) the MIP is observed $(α> α_c)$, and (ii) the MIP is absent even for arbitrarily strong measurements $(α<α_c)$. Using fermion models, we demonstrate both regimes in integrable and non-integrable cases. We identify the underlyin…
Quantum error correction is a crucial step beyond the current noisy-intermediate-scale quantum device towards fault-tolerant quantum computing. However, most of the error corrections ever demonstrated rely on post-selection of events or post-correction of states, based on measurement results repeatedly recorded during circuit execution. On the other hand, real-time error correction is supposed to be performed through classical feedforward of the measurement results to data qubits. It provides unavoidable latency from conditional electronics that would limit the scalability of the next-generati…
A number of commercially available quantum computers, such as those based on trapped-ion or superconducting qubits, can now perform mid-circuit measurements and resets. In addition to being crucial for quantum error correction, this capability can help reduce the number of qubits needed to execute many types of quantum algorithms by measuring qubits as early as possible, resetting them, and reusing them elsewhere in the circuit. In this work, we introduce the idea of qubit-reuse compilation, which takes as input a quantum circuit and produces as output a compiled circuit that requires fewer qu…
We employ unsupervised learning tools to identify different phases and their transition in quantum systems subject to the combined action of unitary evolution and stochastic measurements. Specifically, we consider principal component analysis and intrinsic dimension estimation to reveal a measurement-induced structural transition in the data space. We test our approach on a 1+1D stabilizer circuit and find the quantities of interest furnish novel order parameters defined directly in the raw data space. Our results provide a first use of unsupervised tools in dynamical quantum phase transitions…
Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) algorithms require novel paradigms of error mitigation. To obtain noise-robust quantum computers, each logical qubit is equipped with hundreds or thousands of physical qubits. However, it is not possible to use memory-consuming techniques for current quantum devices having at most hundreds or at best thousands of physical qubits on their own. For specific problems, valid quantum states have a unique structure as in the case of Fock states and W-states where the Hamming weight is fixed, and the evolution takes place in a smaller subspace of the full Hilbe…
In this paper, we introduce quantum fidelity based measurement induced nonlocality for the bipartite state over two-sided von Neumann projective measurements. While all the properties of this quantity are reflected from that of one-sided measurement, the latter one is shown to set an upper bound for arbitrary bipartite state. As an illustration, we have studied the nonlocality of Bell diagonal state.
In this article, we propose measurement-induced nonlocality (MIN) quantified by Hellinger distance using von Neumann projective measurement. The proposed MIN is a bonafide measure of nonlocal correlation and is resistant to local ancilla problem. We obtain an analytical expression of the Hellinger distance MIN for general pure and $2 \otimes n$ mixed states. In addition to comparing with similar measures, we explore the role of weak measurement in capturing nonlocal correlation.
Quantum correlation in two-qubit spin models is investigated by use of measurement-induced disturbance [S. Luo, Phys. Rev. A, 77(2008) 022301]. Its dependences on external magnetic field, spin-spin coupling, and Dzyaloshinski-Moriya (DM) interactions are presented in detail. We also compare measurement-induced disturbance and thermal entanglement in spin models and illustrate their different characteristics.
Measurement induced nonlocality (MIN) captures global nonlocal effect of bipartite quantum state due to locally invariant projective measurements. In this paper, we propose a new version of MIN using fidelity induced metric, andthe same is calculated for pure and mixed states. For mixed state, the upper bound is obtained from eigenvalues of correlation matrix. Further, dynamics of MIN and fidelity based MIN under various noisy quantum channels show that they are more robust than entanglement.
Measurement-induced nonlocality (MIN) was proposed for measure the maximum global effect caused by locally invariant measurements. Similarly, the Measurement-induced nonbilocal correlation is a generalization of MIN can be used to measure the maximal global influence caused by the local measurement in the bilocal scenario. In this paper, we propose a new nonbilocal correlation measure based on the Wigner-Yanase skew information. The relationship between the MIN based on Wigner-Yanase skew information and our measure is discussed. We present an analytical expression of our measure for pure inpu…
Correlation beyond entanglement is a subject of interest in quantum information. Here we have shown the existence of quantum correlation without entanglement in Heisenberg $XYZ$ spin model with external magnetic field, using different versions of measurement-induced nonlocality. However maximally entangled states are shown to possess maximum correlation.
We demonstrate the possibility of controlling the border between the quantum and the classical world by performing nonselective measurements on quantum systems. We consider a quantum harmonic oscillator initially prepared in a Schroedinger cat state and interacting with its environment. We show that the environment induced decoherence transforming the cat state into a statistical mixture can be strongly inhibited by means of appropriate sequences of measurements.
The interplay between unitary dynamics and local quantum measurements results in unconventional non-unitary dynamical phases and transitions. In this paper we investigate the dynamics of $(d+1)$-dimensional hybrid stabilizer circuits, for $d=1,2,3$. We characterize the measurement-induced phases and their transitions using large-scale numerical simulations focusing on entanglement measures, purification dynamics, and wave-function structure. Our findings demonstrate the measurement-induced transition in $(d+1)$ spatiotemporal dimensions is conformal and close to the percolation transition in $…
We study quantum correlation of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W states under various noisy channels using measurement-induced disturbance approach and its optimized version. Although these inequivalent maximal entangled states represent the same quantum correlation in the absence of noise, it is shown that the W state is more robust than the GHZ state through most noisy channels. Also, using measurement-induced disturbance measure, we obtain the analytical relations for the time evolution of quantum correlations in terms of the noisy parameter $κ$ and remove its overestimating quantum …
We investigate the quantum correlation in a qutrit-qubit mixed spin chain based on measurement-induced disturbance (MID) [S. Luo, Phys. Rev. A, 77, (2008) 022301]. We also compare MID and thermal entanglement measured by negativity and illustrate their different characteristics.
One main goal of quantum control is to steer a quantum system toward an expected state or dynamics. For measurement-induced quantum control, measurements serve as the only control, which is like the cases in quantum Zeno and anti-zeno effects. In this paper, this scenario will be investigated in a general $N$-level quantum system. It is proved that, when the intial and expected states are both pure, the control space could be reduced to an effective subspace spanned by these two states only. This result will greatly simplify the measurement-induced control strategy of an $N$-level quantum syst…
The dynamics of a kicked quantum system undergoing repeated measurements of momentum is investigated. A diffusive behavior is obtained even when the dynamics of the classical counterpart is not chaotic. The diffusion coefficient is explicitly computed for a large class of Hamiltonians and compared to the classical case.
Here we focus on the measurement induced nonlocality and present a redefinition in terms of the skew information subject to a broken observable. It is shown that the obtained quantity possesses an obvious operational meaning, can tackle the noncontractivity of the measurement induced nonlocality and has analytic expressions for many quantum states. Most importantly, an inverse approximate joint diagonalization algorithm, due to its simplicity, high efficiency, stability, and state independence, is presented to provide almost analytic expressions for any quantum state, which can also shed light…
We propose the entropic measurement-induced nonlocality (MIN) as the maximal increment of von Neumann entropy induced by the locally non-disturbing measurement, and study behaviors of it both in the independent and common structured reservoirs. We present schemes for preserving the MIN, and show that for certain initial states the MIN, including the quantum correlations, can even be enhanced by the common reservoir. Additionally, we also show that the different measures of MIN may give different qualitative characterizations of nonlocal properties, i.e., it is rather measure dependent than sta…
It is shown that a topological vector-potential (Berry phase) is induced by the act of measuring angular momentum in a direction defined by a reference particle. This vector potential appears as a consequence of the back-reaction due to the quantum measurement.
Measurement-induced nonclassical effects in a two-mode interferometer are investigated theoretically using numerical simulations and analytical results. We demonstrate that for certain parameters measurements within the interferometer lead to the occurrence of two-mode squeezing. The results strongly depend on the detection probability, the phase inside the interferometer, and the choice of the input states. The appropriate parameters for maximized squeezing are obtained. We analyze the influence of losses and confirm that the predicted effects are within reach of current experimental techniqu…
We propose a method to prepare entangled states and implement quantum computation with atoms in optical cavities. The internal state of the atoms are entangled by a measurement of the phase of light transmitted through the cavity. By repeated measurements an entangled state is created with certainty, and this entanglement can be used to implement gates on qubits which are stored in different internal degrees of freedom of the atoms. This method, based on measurement induced dynamics, has a higher fidelity than schemes making use of controlled unitary dynamics.
Pushing forward the understanding of general non-unitary dynamics in controlled quantum platforms has been fueled by the recent discovery of measurement-induced phases and phase transitions. So far, these transitions remained largely elusive, since they are masked in standard quantum mechanical observables due to the randomness of measurement outcomes. Here, we establish a general scheme -- pre-selection -- to make them observable: The outcome randomness is broken explicitly by steering the system towards a representative state, which corresponds to one out of exponentially many possible measu…
We consider a special iterated quantum protocol with measurement-induced nonlinearity for qubits, where all pure initial states on the Bloch sphere can be considered chaotic. The dynamics is ergodic with no attractive fixed cycles. We show that initial noise radically changes this behavior. The completely mixed state is an attractive fixed point of the dynamics induced by the protocol. Our numerical simulations strongly indicate that initially mixed states all converge to the completely mixed state. The presented protocol is an example, where gaining information from measurements and employing…
In this paper we propose measurement induced nonlocality (MIN) using a metric based on fidelity to capture global nonlocal effect of a quantum state due to locally invariant projective measurements. This quantity is a remedy for local ancilla problem in the original definition of MIN. We present an analytical expression of the proposed version of MIN for pure bipartite state and 2Xn dimensional mixed state. We also provide an upper bound of the MIN for general mixed state. Finally, we compare this quantity with MINs based on Hilbert-Schmidt norm and skew information for Werner and isotropic st…
We present a technique based on multi-photon detection which leads to a strong focussing of photons scattered by independent single photon emitters. For N single photon sources it is shown that if m - 1 photons are detected in a particular direction (with m \leq N) the probability to detect the m-th photon in the same direction can be as high as 100%. This measurement induced focussing effect is already clearly visible for m>2.
Quantum correlations are essential for quantum information processing. Measurement-induced nonlocality (MIN) which is defined based on the projective measurement is a good measure of quantum correlation, and is favored for its potential applications. We investigate here behaviors of the geometric and entropic MIN in the two-qubit Heisenberg XY chain, and reveal effects of the anisotropic parameter $γ$ as well as the external magnetic field $B$ on strength of them. Our results show that both $γ$ and $B$ can serve as efficient controlling parameters for tuning the MIN in the XY chain.
We study the total quantum correlation, semiquantum correlation and joint quantum correlation induced by local von Neumann measurement in bipartite system. We analyze the properties of these quantum correlations and obtain analytical formula for pure states. The experimental witness for these quantum correlations is further provided and the significance of these quantum correlations is discussed in the context of local distinguishability of quantum states.
