We classify the Lie point symmetries for the 2+1 nonlinear generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation by determine all the possible f(u) functional forms where the latter depends. For each case the one-dimensional optimal system is derived; a necessary analysis to find all the possible similarity transformations which simplify the equation. We demonstrate our results by constructing static and travel-wave similarity solutions. In particular the latter solutions satisfy a second-order nonlinear ordinary differential equation which can be solved by quadratures.
We prove global well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated with the Kadomotsev-Petviashvili-Burgers equation (KPBII) in $\mathbb R^2$ when the initial value belongs to the anisotropic Sobolev space $H^{s_1,s_2}(\mathbb R^2)$ for all $s_1>-\frac12$ and $s_2\geq0$. On the other hand, we prove in some sense that our result is sharp.
We study transverse stability and instability of one-dimensional small-amplitude periodic traveling waves of a generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with respect to two-dimensional perturbations, which are either periodic or square-integrable in the direction of the propagation of the underlying one-dimensional wave and periodic in the transverse direction. We obtain transverse instability results in KP-fKdV, KP-ILW, and KP-Whitham equations. Moreover, assuming the spectral stability of one-dimensional wave with respect to one-dimensional square-integrable periodic perturbations, we obta…
The method of nonlinear self-adjointness is applied to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. The infinite set of conservation laws associated with the infinite algebra of Lie point symmetry of the KP equation is constructed.
We consider the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equations posed on $\mathbb{R}^2$. For both equations, we provide sequential in time asymptotic descriptions of solutions, of arbitrarily large data, inside regions not containing lumps or line solitons, and under minimal regularity assumptions. The proof involves the introduction of two new virial identities adapted to the KP dynamics, showing decay in large regions of space, especially in the KP-I case, where no monotonicity property was previously known. Our results do not require the use of the integrability of KP and are adaptable to well-posed …
An asymptotic description of the formation of dispersive shock waves in solutions to the generalized Kadomtsev--Petviashvili (KP) equation is conjectured. The asymptotic description based on a multiscales expansion is given in terms of a special solution to an ordinary differential equation of the Painleve' I hierarchy. Several examples are discussed numerically to provide strong evidence for the validity of the conjecture.
A new method for the solution of initial-boundary value problems for \textit{linear} and \textit{integrable nonlinear} evolution PDEs in one spatial dimension was introduced by one of the authors in 1997 \cite{F1997}. This approach was subsequently extended to initial-boundary value problems for evolution PDEs in two spatial dimensions, first in the case of linear PDEs \cite{F2002b} and, more recently, in the case of integrable nonlinear PDEs, for the Davey-Stewartson and the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equations on the half-plane (see \cite{FDS2009} and \cite{MF2011} respectively). In this work…
We investigate the Cauchy problem on the cylinder, namely the semi-periodic problem where there is periodicity in the $x$-direction and decay in the $y$-direction, for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation by the inverse spectral transform method. For initial data with small $L^1$ and $L^2$ norms, assuming the zero mass constraint, this initial-value problem is reduced to a Riemann-Hilbert problem on the boundary of certain infinite strips with shift.
We consider the fifth order Kadomtsev-Petviashvili I (KP-I) equation as $\partial_tu+α\partial_x^3u+\partial^5_xu+\partial_x^{-1}\partial_y^2u+uu_x=0,$ while $α\in \mathbb{R}$. We introduce an interpolated energy space $E_s$ to consider the well-posedeness of the initial value problem (IVP) of the fifth order KP-I equation. We obtain the local well-posedness of IVP of the fifth order KP-I equation in $E_s$ for $0<s\leq1$. To obtain the local well-posedness, we present a bilinear estimate in the Bourgain space in the framework of the interpolated energy space. It crucially depends on the dyadic…
This is a short review of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchies of types B and C. The main objects are the $L$-operator, the wave operator, the auxiliary linear problems for the wave function, the bilinear identity for the wave function and the tau-function. All of them are discussed in the paper. The connections with the usual Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy (of the type A) are clarified. Examples of soliton solutions and the dispersionless limit of the hierarchies are also considered.
The (2+1)-dimensional spherical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (SKP) equation of J.-K. Xue [Phys. Lett. A 314:479-483 (2003)] fails the Painleve test for integrability at the highest resonance, where a nontrivial compatibility condition for recursion relations appears. This compatibility condition, however, is sufficiently weak and thus allows the SKP equation to possess an integrable (1+1)-dimensional reduction, which is detected by the Weiss method of truncated singular expansions.
Equivalence is established between a special class of Painleve VI equations parametrized by a conformal dimension $μ$, time dependent Euler top equations, isomonodromic deformations and three-dimensional Frobenius manifolds. The isomodromic tau function and solutions of the Euler top equations are explicitly constructed in terms of Wronskian solutions of the 2-vector 1-constrained symplectic Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (CKP) hierarchy by means of Grassmannian formulation. These Wronskian solutions give rational solutions of the Painleve VI equation for $μ=1,2,{...} $.
We present the q-deformed multivariate hypergeometric functions related to Schur polynomials as tau-functions of the KP and of the two-dimensional Toda lattice hierarchies. The variables of the hypergeometric functions are the higher times of those hierarchies. The discrete Toda lattice variable shifts parameters of hypergeometric functions. The role of additional symmetries in generating hypergeometric tau-functions is explained.
We apply the technique of integrable extensions to the symmetry pseudo-group of the r-th mdKP equation. This gives another look on deriving known coverings and allows us to find new coverings for this equation.
We consider a Frobenius structure associated with the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. This is done, essentially, by applying a continuous analogue of the finite dimensional theory in the space of Schwartz functions on the line. The potential of the Frobenius manifold is found to be a logarithmic potential with quadratic external field. Following the construction of the principal hierarchy, we construct a set of infinitely many commuting flows, which extends the classical dKP hierarchy.
The coupled Kadomtsev--Petviashvili system associated with an elliptic curve, proposed by Date, Jimbo and Miwa [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn., 52:766--771, 1983], is reinvestigated within the direct linearisation framework, which provides us with more insights into the integrability of this elliptic model from the perspective of a general linear integral equation. As a result, we successfully construct for the elliptic coupled Kadomtsev--Petviashvili system not only a Lax pair composed of differential operators in $2\times2$ matrix form but also multi-soliton solutions with phases parametrised by points …
We derive a particular solution of the extended $r$-reduced KP hierarchy, which is specified by a generalized string equation. The work is a generalization to arbitrary $r\geq 2$ of Buryak's recent results of a solution to the extended open KdV hierarchy which corresponds to $r=2$.
Under investigation is a generalized (3 + 1)-dimensional B-type Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with variable coefficients in fluid dynamics. Based on the Hirota's bilinear form and the positive quadratic function, abundant lump solutions are obtained. The interaction solutions between lump solutions and other solitons are also presented. Their dynamical behaviors are graphically shown with different choices of the free parameters.
A generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, describing water waves in oceans of varying depth, density and vorticity is discussed. A priori, it involves 9 arbitrary functions of one, or two variables. The conditions are determined under which the equation allows an infinite dimensional symmetry algebra. This algebra can involve up to three arbitrary functions of time. It depends on precisely three such functions if and only if it is completely integrable.
The KPII equation is an integrable nonlinear PDE in 2+1 dimensions (two spatial and one temporal), which arises in several physical circumstances, including fluid mechanics where it describes waves in shallow water. It provides a multidimensional generalisation of the renowned KdV equation. In this work, we employ a novel approach recently introduced by one of the authors in connection with the Davey-Stewartson equation \cite{FDS2009}, in order to analyse the initial-boundary value problem for the KPII equation formulated on the half-plane. The analysis makes crucial use of the so-called d-bar…
A characterization of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy of type C (CKP) in terms of the KP tau-function is given. Namely, we prove that the CKP hierarchy can be identified with the restriction of odd times flows of the KP hierarchy on the locus of turning points of the second flow. The notion of CKP tau-function is clarified and connected with the KP tau function. Algebraic-geometrical solutions and in particular elliptic solutions are discussed in detail. The new identity for theta-functions of curves with holomorphic involution having fixed points is obtained.
We establish a rigorous link between infinite-dimensional regular Frölicher Lie groups built out of non-formal pseudodifferential operators and the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy. We introduce a version of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy on a regular Frölicher Lie group of series of non-formal odd-class pseudodifferential operators. We solve its corresponding Cauchy problem, and we establish a link between the dressing operator for our hierarchy and the action of diffeomorphisms and non-formal Sato-like operators on jet spaces. In appendix, we describe the group of Fourier integral oper…
The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) nonlinear wave equation is the three dimensional generalization of the Korteveg-de Vries (KdV) equation. We show how to obtain the cylindrical KP (cKP) and cartesian KP in relativistic fluid dynamics. The obtained KP equations describe the evolution of perturbations in the baryon density in a strongly interacting quark gluon plasma (sQGP) at zero temperature. We also show the analytical solitary wave solution of the KP equations in both cases.
This work describes a classification of the $N$-soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation in terms of chord diagrams of N chords joining pairs of 2N points. The different classes of N-solitons are enumerated by the distribution of crossings of the chords. The generating function of the chord diagrams is expressed as a continued fraction, special cases of which are moment generating functions for certain kinds of $q$-orthogonal polynomials.
In this paper, we investigate the non-autonomous discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) system in terms of generalized Cauchy matrix approach. These equations include non-autonomous bilinear lattice KP equation, non-autonomous lattice potential KP equation, non-autonomous lattice potential modified KP equation, non-autonomous asymmetric lattice potential modified KP equation, non-autonomous lattice Schwarzian KP equation and non-autonomous lattice KP-type Nijhoff-Quispel-Capel equation. By introducing point transformations, all the equations are described as simplified forms, where the lattice p…
The modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (mKP) equation is shown in this paper to be decomposable into the first two soliton equations of the 2N-coupled Chen-Lee-Liu and Kaup-Newell hierarchies by respectively nonlinearizing two sets of symmetry Lax pairs. In these two cases, the decomposed (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear systems both have a couple of different Lax representations, which means that there are two linear systems associated with the mKP equation under the same constraint between the potential and eigenfunctions. For each Lax representation of the decomposed (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear sys…
We review the integration of the KP hierarchy in several non-standard contexts. Specifically, we consider KP in the following associative differential algebras: an algebra equipped with a nilpotent derivation; an algebra of functions equipped with a derivation that generalizes the gradient operator; an algebra of quaternion-valued functions; a differential Lie algebra; an algebra of polynomials equipped with the Pincherle differential; a Moyal algebra. In all these cases we can formulate and solve the Cauchy problem of the KP hierarchy. Also, in each of these cases we derive different Zakharov…
In this paper, a variable coefficient Bilinear neural network method is proposed to deal with the analytical solutions of variable coefficient nonlinear partial differential equations. As an example, a Kadomstev-Petviashvili equation with variable coefficients is investigated by using the variable coefficient Bilinear neural network method. By establishing "3-2-2-1" and "3-3-2-1" models respectively, rich analytical solutions of the variable coefficient Kadomstev-Petviashvili equation are obtained. By choosing some special values of the parameters, the dynamics properties are demonstrated in s…
It is known that the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation can be decomposed into the first two members of the coupled Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy by the binary nonlinearization of Lax pairs. In this paper, we construct the N-th iterated Darboux transformation (DT) for the second- and third-order m-coupled AKNS systems. By using together the N-th iterated DT and Cramer's rule, we find that the KPII equation has the unreduced multi-component Wronskian solution and the KPI equation admits a reduced multi-component Wronskian solution. In particular, based on the unreduced and reduc…
The dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) equation $(u_t+uu_x)_x=u_{yy}$ is one of the simplest nonlinear wave equations describing two-dimensional shocks. To solve the dKP equation we use a coordinate transformation inspired by the method of characteristics for the one-dimensional Hopf equation $u_t+uu_x=0$. We show numerically that the solutions to the transformed equation do not develop shocks. This permits us to extend the dKP solution as the graph of a multivalued function beyond the critical time when the gradients blow up. This overturned solution is multivalued in a lip shape reg…
Vector fields naturally arise in many branches of mathematics and physics. Recently it was discovered that Lax pairs for many important multidimensional integrable partial differential equations (PDEs) of hydrodynamic type (also known as dispersionless PDEs) consist of vector field equations. These vector fields have complex coefficients and their analytic, in the spectral parameter, eigenfunctions play an important role in the formulations of the direct and inverse spectral transforms. In this paper we prove existence of eigenfunctions of the basic vector field associated with the celebrated …
In this paper, we construct the bilinear identities for the wave functions of an extended B-type Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (BKP) hierarchy, which contains two types of (2+1)-dimensional Sawada-Kotera equation with a self-consistent source (2d-SKwS-I and 2d-SKwS-II). By introducing an auxiliary variable corresponding to the extended flow for the BKP hierarchy, we find the tau-function and the bilinear identities for this extended BKP hierarchy. The bilinear identities can generate all the Hirota's bilinear equations for the zero-curvature forms of this extended BKP hierarchy. As examples, the Hiro…
In this note we will discuss a potentially interesting extension of some recent results on primitive solutions to completely integrable partial differential equations. We will discuss a family distributions that are holomorphic on the Riemann sphere except on the singular sets homeomorphic to a Cantor set or Sierpinski gasket. These distributions allow us to produce solutions to the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation. These distributions are limits of families of rational functions that can also be associated with holomorphic line bundles on surfaces with a finite number of doubly degenerate sin…
We recall the notions of Frölicher and diffeological spaces and we build regular Frölicher Lie groups and Lie algebras of formal pseudo-differential operators in one independent variable. Combining these constructions with a smooth version of the Mulase factorization of infinite dimensional groups based on formal pseudo-differential operators, we present two proofs of the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy in a smooth category. We also generalize these results to a KP hierarchy modelled on formal pseudo-differential operators with coefficients wh…
We study the existence and uniqueness of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy solutions in the algebra of $\F Cl(S^1,\K^n)$ of formal classical pseudo-differential operators. The classical algebra $ΨDO(S^1,\K^n)$ where the KP hierarchy is well-known appears as a subalgebra of $\F Cl(S^1,\K^n).$ We investigate algebraic properties of $\F Cl(S^1,\K^n)$ such as splittings, r-matrices, extension of the Gelfand-Dickii bracket, almost complex structures. Then, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the KP hierarchy solutions in $\F Cl(S^1,\K^n)$ with respect to extended classes of initial val…

The aim of this paper is the accurate numerical study of the KP equation. In particular we are concerned with the small dispersion limit of this model, where no comprehensive analytical description exists so far. To this end we first study a similar highly oscillatory regime for asymptotically small solutions, which can be described via the Davey-Stewartson system. In a second step we investigate numerically the small dispersion limit of the KP model in the case of large amplitudes. Similarities and differences to the much better studied Korteweg-de Vries situation are discussed as well as the…
In this paper, we construct the additional flows of the noncommutative Kadomtsev-Petviashvili(KP) hierarchy and the additional symmetry flows constitute an infinite dimensional Lie algebra $W_{1+\infty}$. In addition, the generating function of the additional symmetries can also be proved to have a nice form in terms of wave functions and this generating symmetry is used to construct the noncommutative KP hierarchy with self-consistent sources and the constrained noncommutative KP hierarchy. The above results will be further generalized to the noncommutative Gelfand-Dickey hierarchies which co…
The reduction by restricting the spectral parameters $k$ and $k'$ on a generic algebraic curve of degree $\mathcal{N}$ is performed for the discrete AKP, BKP and CKP equations, respectively. A variety of two-dimensional discrete integrable systems possessing a more general solution structure arise from the reduction, and in each case a unified formula for generic positive integer $\mathcal{N}\geq 2$ is given to express the corresponding reduced integrable lattice equations. The obtained extended two-dimensional lattice models give rise to many important integrable partial difference equations …
A quantisation of the KP equation on a cylinder is proposed that is equivalent to an infinite system of non-relativistic one-dimensional bosons carrying masses $m=1,2,\ldots$ The Hamiltonian is Galilei-invariant and includes the split $Ψ^\dagger_{m_1}Ψ^\dagger_{m_2}Ψ_{m_1+m_2}$ and merge $Ψ^\dagger_{m_1+m_2}Ψ_{m_1}Ψ_{m_2}$ terms for all combinations of particles with masses $m_1$, $m_2$ and $m_1+m_2$, with a special choice of coupling constants. The Bethe eigenfunctions for the model are constructed. The consistency of the coordinate Bethe Ansatz, and therefore, the quantum integrability of th…
Whitham modulation theory for certain two-dimensional evolution equations of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) type is presented. Three specific examples are considered in detail: the KP equation, the two-dimensional Benjamin-Ono (2DBO) equation and a modified KP (m2KP) equation. A unified derivation is also provided. In the case of the m2KP equation, the corresponding Whitham modulation system exhibits features different from the other two. The approach presented here does not require integrability of the original evolution equation. Indeed, while the KP equation is known to be a completely integra…
By considering the inhomogeneities of media, a generalized variable-coefficient Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (vc-KP) equation is investigated, which can be used to describe many nonlinear phenomena in fluid dynamics and plasma physics. In this paper, we systematically investigate complete integrability of the generalized vc-KP equation under a integrable constraint condition. With the aid of a generalized Bells polynomials, its bilinear formulism, bilinear Bäcklund transformations, Lax pairs and Darboux covariant Lax pairs are succinctly constructed, which can be reduced to the ones of several integ…
Full dispersive models of water waves, such as the Whitham equation and the full dispersion Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, are interesting from both the physical and mathematical points of view. This paper studies analogous full dispersive KP models of nonlinear elastic waves propagating in a nonlocal elastic medium. In particular we consider anti-plane shear elastic waves which are assumed to be small-amplitude long waves. We propose two different full dispersive extensions of the KP equation in the case of cubic nonlinearity and "negative dispersion". One of them is called the Whitham…
In this paper, we give a unified construction of the recursion operators from the Lax representation for three integrable hierarchies: Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP), modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (mKP) and Harry-Dym under $n$-reduction. This shows a new inherent relationship between them. To illustrate our construction, the recursion operator are calculated explicitly for $2$-reduction and $3$-reduction.
Based on the direct linearisation framework of the discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-type equations presented in [Proc. R. Soc. A, 473 (2017) 20160915], six novel nonautonomous differential-difference equations are established, including three in the AKP class, two in the BKP class and one in the CKP class. In particular, one in the BKP class and the one in the CKP class are both in (2+2)-dimensional form. All the six models are integrable in the sense of having the same linear integral equation representations as those of their associated discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-type equations, which gu…
