We revisit quantum dynamics of the damped and driven nonlinear oscillator. In the classical case this system has two stationary solutions (the limit cycles) in the certain parameter region, which is the origin of the celebrated bistability phenomenon. The quantum-classical correspondence for the oscillator dynamics is discussed in details.
We revisit the problem of quantum bi- and multi-stability by considering the dissipative Double Resonance Model. For a large driving frequency, this system has a simpler phase structure than the driven dissipative nonlinear oscillator -- the paradigm model for classical and quantum bistability. This allows us to obtain an analytical estimate for the lifetime of quantum limit cycles. On the other hand, for a small driving frequency, the system is much reacher than the nonlinear oscillator. This allows us to address a novel phenomenon of dissipation- and chaos-assisted tunneling between quantum …
We study numerically the behavior of qubit coupled to a quantum dissipative driven oscillator (resonator). Above a critical coupling strength the qubit rotations become synchronized with the oscillator phase. In the synchronized regime, at certain parameters, the qubit exhibits tunneling between two orientations with a macroscopic change of number of photons in the resonator. The life times in these metastable states can be enormously large. The synchronization leads to a drastic change of qubit radiation spectrum with appearance of narrow lines corresponding to recently observed single artifi…
We present a new approach for deriving exact, closed-form solutions for the steady state of a wide class of driven-dissipative nonlinear resonators that is distinct from more common positive-$P$ function methods. Our method generalizes the coherent quantum absorber approach of Stannigel et al. to include nonlinear driving and dissipation, and relies crucially on exploiting the Segal-Bargmann representation of Fock space. Our solutions and method reveal a wealth of previously unexplored observable phenomena in these systems, including new generalized photon-blockade and anti-blockade effects, a…
The prospect of a system possessing two or more stable states for a given excitation condition is of topical interest with applications in information processing networks. In this work, we establish the remote transfer of bistability from a nonlinear resource in a dissipatively coupled two-mode system. As a clear advantage over coherently coupled settings, the dissipative nature of interaction is found to support a lower pumping threshold for bistable signals. For comparable parameters, the bistability threshold for dissipatively coupled systems is lower by a factor of about five. The resultin…
The existence of bistability in quantum optical systems remains a intensely debated open question beyond the mean-field approximation. Quantum fluctuations are finite-size corrections to the mean-field approximation used because the full exact solution is unobtainable. Usually, quantum fluctuations destroy the bistability present on the mean-field level. Here, by identifying and using exact modulated semi-local dynamical symmetries in a certain quantum optical models of driven-dissipative fermionic chains we exactly prove bistability in precisely the quantum fluctuations. Surprisingly, rather …

We present exact numerical solutions of the damped-driven Jaynes--Cummings model adapted to describe absorptive optical bistability in the limit of a few atoms strongly coupled to a high-finesse resonator. We show that the simplifying semiclassical result for many physical quantities of interest is well reproduced by the quantum model including even with only a few atoms in the strongly coupled system. Nontrivial atom-field quantum cross-correlations show up in the strong-driving limit.
In the present work we investigate the existence of multiple nonequilibrium steady states in a coherently driven XY lattice of dissipative two-level systems. A commonly used mean-field ansatz, in which spatial correlations are neglected, predicts a bistable behavior with a sharp shift between low- and high-density states. In contrast one-dimensional matrix product methods reveal these effects to be artifacts of the mean-field approach, with both disappearing once correlations are taken fully into account. Instead, a bunching-antibunching transition emerges. This indicates that alternative appr…
We follow the passage from complex amplitude bistability to phase bistability in the driven dissipative Jaynes-Cummings oscillator. Quasidistribution functions in the steady state are employed, for varying qubit-cavity detuning and drive parameters, in order to track a first-order dissipative quantum phase transition up to the critical point marking a second-order transition and spontaneous symmetry breaking. We demonstrate the photon blockade breakdown in the dispersive regime, and find that the coexistence of cavity states in the regime of quantum bistability is accompanied by pronounced qub…
Dito and Turrubiates recently introduced an interesting model of the dissipative quantum mechanics of a damped harmonic oscillator in phase space. Its key ingredient is a non-Hermitian deformation of the Moyal star product with the damping constant as deformation parameter. We compare the Dito-Turrubiates scheme with phase-space quantum mechanics (or deformation quantization) based on other star products, and extend it to incorporate Wigner functions. The deformed (or damped) star product is related to a complex Hamiltonian, and so necessitates a modified equation of motion involving complex c…
We consider a one-dimensional lattice of atoms with laser excitation to a Rydberg state and spontaneous emission. The atoms are coupled due to the dipole-dipole interaction of the Rydberg states. This driven-dissipative system has a broad range of non-equilibrium phases, such as antiferromagnetic ordering and bistability. Using the quantum trajectory method, we calculate the spatial correlation function throughout the parameter space for up to 20 lattice sites. We show that bistability significantly strengthens the spatial correlations and entanglement.
We analyze the long-time evolution of open quantum many-body systems using a variational approach. For the dissipative Ising model, where mean-field theory predicts a wide region of bistable behavior, we find genuine bistability only at a singular point, confirming the previously suggested picture of a first order transition. The situation is dramatically different when considering a majority-voter model including three-body interactions, where we find bistable behavior in an extended region, owing to the breaking of detailed balance in the the effective description of the system. In this mode…
We highlight the importance of quantum fluctuations in organizing a dissipative quantum phase transition for the driven Jaynes-Cummings interaction with variable qubit-cavity detuning. The system response presents a substantial difference from the predictions of the semiclassical theory, the extent of which is revealed in the properties of quantum bistability, and visualized with the help of quasi-distribution functions for the cavity field, subject to an appropriate scale parameter. States anticipated by the neoclassical theory of radiation coexist in the quantum picture, following the occurr…
Understanding and characterizing phase transitions in driven-dissipative systems constitutes a new frontier for many-body physics. A generic feature of dissipative phase transitions is a vanishing gap in the Liouvillian spectrum, which leads to long-lived deviations from the steady-state as the system is driven towards the transition. Here, we show that photon correlation measurements can be used to characterize the corresponding critical slowing down of nonequilibrium dynamics. We focus on the extensively studied phenomenon of optical bistability in GaAs cavity-polaritons, which can be descri…
We consider a driven damped anharmonic oscillator which classically leads to a bistable steady state and to hysteresis. The quantum counterpart for this system has an exact analytical solution in the steady state which does not display any bistability or hysteresis. We use quantum state diffusion theory to describe this system and to provide a new perspective on the lack of hysteresis in the quantum regime so as to study in detail the quantum to classical transition. The analysis is also relevant to measurements of a single periodically driven electron in a Penning trap where hysteresis has be…
The damped harmonic oscillator is a workhorse for the study of dissipation in quantum mechanics. However, despite its simplicity, this system has given rise to some approximations whose validity and relation to more refined descriptions deserve a thorough investigation. In this work, we apply a method that allows us to diagonalize exactly the dissipative Hamiltonians that are frequently adopted in the literature. Using this method we derive the conditions of validity of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) and show how this approximate description relates to more general ones. We also show th…
Many-body systems constructed of quantum-optical building blocks can now be realized in experimental platforms ranging from exciton-polariton fluids to ultracold gases of Rydberg atoms, establishing a fascinating interface between traditional many-body physics and the driven-dissipative, non-equilibrium setting of cavity-QED. At this interface, the standard techniques and intuitions of both fields are called into question, obscuring issues as fundamental as the role of fluctuations, dimensionality, and symmetry on the nature of collective behavior and phase transitions. Here, we study the driv…
An optical realization of the damped quantum oscillator, based on transverse light dynamics in an optical resonator with slowly-moving mirrors, is theoretically suggested. The optical resonator setting provides a simple implementation of the time-dependent Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian of the dissipative quantum oscillator, and enables to visualize the effects of damped oscillations in the classical (ray optics) limit and wave packet collapse in the quantum (wave optics) regime.
Nowadays, two of the most prospering fields of physics are quantum computing and spintronics. In both, the loss of information and dissipation plays a crucial role. In the present work we formulate the quantization of the dissipative oscillator, which aids understanding of the above mentioned, and creates a theoretical frame to overcome these issues in the future. Based on the Lagrangian framework of the damped spring system, the canonically conjugated pairs and the Hamiltonian of the system are obtained, by which the quantization procedure can be started and consistently applied. As a result,…
We prove that the observable telegraph signal accompanying the bistability in the photon-blockade-breakdown regime of the driven and lossy Jaynes--Cummings model is the finite-size precursor of what in the thermodynamic limit is a genuine first-order phase transition. We construct a finite-size scaling of the system parameters to a well-defined thermodynamic limit, in which the system remains the same microscopic system, but the telegraph signal becomes macroscopic both in its timescale and intensity. The existence of such a finite-size scaling completes and justifies the classification of the…

By taking a Klein-Gordon field as the environment of an harmonic oscillator and using a new method for dealing with quantum dissipative systems (minimal coupling method), the quantum dynamics and radiation reaction for a quantum damped harmonic oscillator investigated. Applying perturbation method, some transition probabilities indicating the way energy flows between oscillator, reservoir and quantum vacuum, obtained
Quantum mechanics of a general one dimensional dissipative system investigated by it's coupling to a Klein-Gordon field as the environment using a minimal coupling method. Heisenberg equation for such a dissipative system containing a dissipative term proportional to velocity obtained. The evolution of the Schrödinger-cat states in a dissipative parametric amplifier is examined. The main tool in the analysis is the normally ordered characteristic function. Squeezing, photon-number distribution and reduced factorial moments are discussed for the single- and compound-mode cases. Also the single-mode Wigner function is demonstrated. In addition to the decoherence resulting from the interaction with the environment (damped case) there are two sources which can cause such decoherence in the system even if it is completely isolated: these are the decay of the pump and the relative…
We study nonlinear phenomena of bistability and chaos at a level of few quanta. For this purpose we consider a single-mode dissipative oscillator with strong Kerr nonlinearity with respect to dissipation rate driven by a monochromatic force as well as by a train of Gaussian pulses. The quantum effects and decoherence in oscillatory mode are investigated on the framework of the purity of states and the Wigner functions calculated from the master equation. We demonstrate the quantum chaotic regime by means of a comparison between the contour plots of the Wigner functions and the strange attracto…
The photon blockade breakdown in a continuously driven cavity QED system has been proposed as a prime example for a first-order driven-dissipative quantum phase transition. But the predicted scaling from a microscopic system - dominated by quantum fluctuations - to a macroscopic one - characterized by stable phases - and the associated exponents and phase diagram have not been observed so far. In this work we couple a single transmon qubit with a fixed coupling strength $g$ to an in-situ bandwidth $κ$ tuneable superconducting cavity to controllably approach this thermodynamic limit. Even thoug…
We study dynamical phase transitions (DPT) in the driven and damped Dicke model, realizable for example by a driven atomic ensemble collectively coupled to a damped cavity mode. These DPTs are characterized by non-analyticities of certain observables, primarily the overlap of time evolved and initial state. Even though the dynamics is dissipative, this phenomenon occurs for a wide range of parameters and no fine-tuning is required. Focusing on the state of the 'atoms' in the limit of a bad cavity, we are able to asymptotically evaluate an exact path integral representation of the relevant over…
We theoretically explore the dynamical properties of a first-order dissipative phase transition in coherently driven Bose-Hubbard systems, describing, e.g., lattices of coupled nonlinear optical cavities. Via stochastic trajectory calculations based on the truncated Wigner approximation, we investigate the dynamical behavior as a function of system size for 1D and 2D square lattices in the regime where mean-field theory predicts nonlinear bistability. We show that a critical slowing down emerges for increasing number of sites in 2D square lattices, while it is absent in 1D arrays. We character…
We theoretically investigate the critical properties of a single driven-dissipative nonlinear photon mode. In a well-defined thermodynamical limit of large excitation numbers, the exact quantum solution describes a first-order phase transition in the regime where semiclassical theory predicts optical bistability. We study the behavior of the complex spectral gap associated with the Liouvillian superoperator of the corresponding master equation. We show that in this limit the Liouvillian gap vanishes exponentially and that the bimodality of the photon Wigner function disappears. The connection …
It is demonstrated that the general theory of Casimir and van der Waals forces describes the interaction-induced equilibrium thermodynamic potentials of the damped harmonic oscillator bilinearly coupled to the environment. An extended model for a damped oscillator is suggested along the lines of the general theory of Casimir and van der Waals forces, and the corresponding thermodynamic quantities obtained. While the original model involves a heat bath consisting of a large number of free oscillators having infinitesimal damping functions, the extended model allows any generally admissible freq…
We experimentally study a driven-dissipative Josephson junction array, realized with a weakly interacting Bose Einstein condensate residing in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Engineered losses on one site act as a local dissipative process, while tunneling from the neighboring sites constitutes the driving force. We characterize the emerging steady-states of this atomtronic device. With increasing dissipation strength $γ$ the system crosses from a superfluid state, characterized by a coherent Josephson current into the lossy site to a resistive state, characterized by an incoherent hopping …
Quantum field theory of a damped vibrating string as the simplest dissipative scalar field investigated by its coupling with an infinit number of Klein-Gordon fields as the environment by introducing a minimal coupling method. Heisenberg equation containing a dissipative term proportional to velocity obtained for a special choice of coupling function and quantum dynamics for such a dissipative system investigated. Some kinematical relations calculated by tracing out the environment degrees of freedom. The rate of energy flowing between the system and it's environment obtained.
A recent paper [J. Math. Phys. {\bf 59}, 082105 (2018)] constructs a Hamiltonian for the (dissipative) damped harmonic oscillator. We point out that non-Hermiticity of this Hamiltonian has been ignored to find real discrete eigenvalues which are actually non-real. We emphasize that non-Hermiticity in Hamiltonian is crucial and it is a quantal signature of dissipation.
We study the dissipative dynamics of a single quantum harmonic oscillator subjected to a parametric driving with in an effective Hamiltonian approach. Using Liouville von Neumann approach, we show that the time evolution of a parametrically driven dissipative quantum oscillator has a strong connection with the classical damped Mathieu equation. Based on the numerical analysis of the Monodromy matrix, we demonstrate that the dynamical instability generated by the parametric driving are reduced by the effect of dissipation. Further, we obtain a closed relationship between the localization of the…

In this paper, it is proposed a quantization procedure for the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency, time-dependent driven force, and time-dependent dissipative term. The method is based on the construction of dynamical invariants previously proposed by the authors, in which fundamental importance is given to the linear invariants of the oscillator.
Phase transitions of thermal systems and the laser threshold were first connected more than forty years ago. Despite the nonequilibrium nature of the laser, the Landau theory of thermal phase transitions, applied directly to the Scully-Lamb laser model (SLLM), indicates that the laser threshold is a second-order phase transition, associated with a $U(1)$ spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB). To capture the genuine nonequilibrium phase transition of the SLLM (i.e., a single-mode laser without a saturable absorber), here we employ a quantum theory of dissipative phase transitions. Our results con…
Driven-dissipative systems have recently attracted great attention due to the existence of novel physical phenomena with no analog in the equilibrium case. The Keldysh path-integral theory is a powerful tool to investigate these systems. However, it has still been challenge to study strong nonlinear effects implemented by recent experiments, since in this case the photon number is few and quantum fluctuations play a crucial role in dynamics of system. Here we develop a new approach for deriving exact steady states of driven-dissipative systems by introducing the Keldysh partition function in t…
The nonequilibrium dynamics of a small quantum system coupled to a dissipative environment is studied. We show that (1) the oscillatory dynamics close to a coherent-to-incoherent transition is surprisingly different from the one of the classical damped harmonic oscillator and that (2) non-markovian memory plays a prominent role in the time evolution after a quantum quench.
The concept of weak invariant is introduced. Then, the weak invariants associated with time-dependent quantum dissipative systems are discussed in the context of master equations of the Lindblad type. In particular, with the help of the su(1,1) Lie-algebraic structure, the weak invariant is explicitly constructed for the quantum damped harmonic oscillator with the time-dependent frequency and friction coefficient. This generalizes the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant to the case of nonunitary dynamics in the Markovian approximation.
We derive an exact non-Markovian master equation that generalizes the previous work [Hu, Paz and Zhang, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 45}, 2843 (1992)] to damped harmonic oscillators with time-varying parameters. This is achieved by exploiting the linearity of the system and operator solution in Heisenberg picture. Our equation governs the non-Markovian quantum dynamics when the system is modulated by external devices. As an application, we apply our equation to parity kick decoupling problems. The time-dependent dissipative coefficients in the master equation are shown to be modified drastically when the…
Quantum chaos---the study of quantized nonintegrable Hamiltonian systems---is an extremely well-developed and sophisticated field. By contrast, very little work has been done in looking at quantum versions of systems which classically exhibit {\it dissipative} chaos. Using the decoherence formalism of Gell-Mann and Hartle, I find a quantum mechanical analog of one such system, the forced damped Duffing oscillator. I demonstrate the classical limit of the system, and discuss its decoherent histories. I show that using decoherent histories, one can define not only the quantum map of an entire de…
In the framework of the Lindblad theory for open quantum systems, a master equation for the quantum harmonic oscillator interacting with a dissipative environment, in particular with a thermal bath, is derived for the case when the interaction is based on deformed algebra. The equations of motion for observables strongly depend on the deformation function. The expectation values of the number operator and squared number operator are calculated in the limit of a small deformation parameter for the case of zero temperature of the thermal bath. The steady state solution of the equation for the de…
We report a theoretical study of a quantum optical model consisting of an array of strongly nonlinear cavities incoherently pumped by an ensemble of population-inverted two-level atoms. Projective methods are used to eliminate the atomic dynamics and write a generalized master equation for the photonic degrees of freedom only, where the frequency-dependence of gain introduces non-Markovian features. In the simplest single cavity configuration, this pumping scheme gives novel optical bistability effects and allows for the selective generation of Fock states with a well-defined photon number. Fo…
We numerically study the dynamics and stationary states of a spin ensemble strongly coupled to a single-mode resonator subjected to loss and external driving. Employing a generalized cumulant expansion approach we analyze finite-size corrections to a semiclassical description of amplitude bistability, which is a paradigm example of a driven-dissipative phase transition. Our theoretical model allows us to include inhomogeneous broadening of the spin ensemble and to capture in which way the quantum corrections approach the semiclassical limit for increasing ensemble size $N$. We set up a criteri…
We review some aspects of the quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator. We derive the exact action for a damped mechanical system in the frame of the path integral formulation of the quantum Brownian motion problem developed by Schwinger and by Feynman and Vernon. The doubling of the phase-space degrees of freedom for dissipative systems and thermal field theories is discussed and the doubled variables are related to quantum noise effects. The 't Hooft proposal, according to which the loss of information due to dissipation in a classical deterministic system manifests itself in the quant…
The effects of quantum and thermal corrections on the dynamics of a damped nonlinearly kicked harmonic oscillator are studied. This is done via the Quantum Langevin Equation formalism working on a truncated moment expansion of the density matrix of the system. We find that the type of bifurcations present in the system change upon quantization and that chaotic behavior appears for values of the nonlinear parameter that are far below the chaotic threshold for the classical model. Upon increase of temperature or Planck's constant, bifurcation points and chaotic thresholds are shifted towards low…
We introduce a scheme to perform dissipation-assisted quantum information processing in ion traps considering realistic decoherence rates, for example, due to motional heating. By means of continuous sympathetic cooling, we overcome the trap heating, and show that the damped vibrational excitations can still be exploited to mediate coherent interactions as well as collective dissipative effects. We describe how to control their relative strength experimentally, allowing for protocols of coherent or dissipative generation of entanglement. This scheme can be scaled to larger ion registers for co…
