Using a three-dimensional semiclassical method, we theoretically investigate frustrated double ionization (FDI) of Ar atoms subjected to strong laser fields. The double-hump photoelectron momentum distribution generated from FDI observed in a recent experiment [S. Larimian et al., Phys. Rev. Research 2, 013021 (2020)] is reproduced by our simulation. We confirm that the observed spectrum is due to recollision. The laser intensity dependence of FDI is investigated. We reveal that the doubly excited states of Ar atoms and excited states of Ar+ are the dominant pathways for producing FDI at relatively low and high intensities, respectively. Our work demonstrates that at modest intensities, FDI is a general strong-field physical process accompanied with nonsequential double ionization and it is an important consequence of recollision.
We demonstrate kinematically complete measurements on frustrated double ionization of argon atoms in strong laser fields with a reaction microscope. We found that the electron trapping probability after strong field double ionization is much higher than that after strong field single ionization, especially in case of high laser intensity. The retrieved electron momentum distributions of frustrated double ionization show a clear transition from the nonsequential to the sequential regime, similar to those of strong field double ionization. The dependence of electron momentum width on the laser i…
We formulate a three-dimensional semi-classical model to treat three-electron escape dynamics in a strongly-driven linear triatomic molecule, HeH$_{2}^{+}$. Our model includes the Coulomb singularities. Hence, to avoid unphysical autoionization, we employ two criteria to switch off the Coulomb repulsive force between two bound electrons and switch it on when the motion of one electron is mostly determined by the laser field. We investigate triple and "frustrated" triple ionization. In the latter process two electrons escape while one electron remains bound in a Rydberg state. We find that two …
We report the observation of multiple ionization of Argon through multi-XUV-photon absorption induced by an unprecedentedly powerful laser driven high-harmonic-generation source. Comparing the measured intensity dependence of the yield of the different Argon charge states with numerical calculations we can infer the different channels -direct and sequential- underlying the interaction. While such studies were feasible so far only with FEL sources, this work connects highly-non-linear-XUV-processes with the ultra-short time scales, inherent to the harmonic pulses, and highlights the advanced pe…
We theoretically study frustrated double ionization (FDI) of atoms subjected to intense circularly polarized laser pulses using a three-dimensional classical model. We find a novel "knee" structure of FDI probability as a function of intensity, which is similar to the intensity dependence of nonsequential double ionization probability. The observation of FDI is more favourable when using targets with low ionization potentials and short driving laser wavelengths. This is attributed to the crucial role of recollision therein, which can be experimentally inferred from the photoelectron momentum d…
Using a semi-classical model, we study the formation of highly excited neutral fragments during the fragmentation of $\mathrm{H_3^+}$, a two-electron triatomic molecule, driven by an intense near-IR laser field. To do so, we first formulate a microcanonical distribution for arbitrary one-electron triatomic molecules. We then study frustrated double and single ionization in strongly-driven $\mathrm{H_3^+}$ and compute the kinetic energy release of the nuclei for these two processes. Moreover, we investigate the dependence of frustrated ionization on the strength of the laser field as well as on…
We report an optical dipole trap for calcium. The trap is created by focusing a 488 nm argon-ion laser beam into a calcium magneto-optical trap. The argon-ion laser photo-ionizes atoms in the trap because of a near-resonance with the 4s4f 1F3 level. By measuring the dipole trap decay rate as a function of argon-ion laser intensity, we determine the 1F3 photo-ionization cross section at our wavelength to be approximately 230 Mb.
Using a semi-classical model, we investigate frustrated double ionization (FDI) in $\mathrm{D_3^+}$, a two-electron triatomic molecule, when driven by an intense, linearly polarized, near-infrared (800 nm) laser field. We compute the kinetic energy release of the nuclei and find a good agreement between experiment and our model. We explore the two pathways of FDI and show that, with increasing field strength, over-the-barrier ionization overtakes tunnel ionization as the underlying mechanism of FDI. Moreover, we compute the angular distribution of the ion fragments for FDI and identify a featu…
Detailed understanding of the ionization process in noble liquid detectors is important for their use in applications such as the search for dark matter and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. The response of noble liquid detectors to low-energy ionization events is poorly understood at this time. We describe a new simulation tool which predicts the ionization yield from electronic energy deposits (E < 10keV) in liquid Ar, including the dependence of the yield on the applied electric drift field. The ionization signal produced in a liquid argon detector from $^{37}$Ar beta decay and …
We demonstrate significant enhancement of frustrated double ionization (FDI) in the two-electron triatomic molecule D$_{3}^{+}$ when driven by counter-rotating two-color circular (CRTC) laser fields. We employ a three-dimensional semiclassical model that fully accounts for electron and nuclear motion in strong fields. For different pairs of wavelengths, we compute the probabilities of the FDI pathways as a function of the ratio of the two field-strengths. We identify a pathway of frustrated double ionization that is not present in strongly-driven molecules with linear fields. In this pathway t…
A general model and toolkit for the ionization of three or more electrons in strongly driven molecules using an effective Coulomb potential for the interaction between bound electrons
We demonstrate the control of electron-electron correlation in frustrated double ionization (FDI) of the two-electron triatomic molecule D$_{3}^{+}$ when driven by two orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields. We employ a three-dimensional semi-classical model that fully accounts for the electron and nuclear motion in strong fields. We analyze the FDI probability and the distribution of the momentum of the escaping electron along the polarization direction of the longer wavelength and more intense laser field. These observables when considered in conjunction bear clear signatures of the p…
We demonstrate sub-cycle control of frustrated double ionization (FDI) in the two-electron triatomic molecule D$_3^+$ when driven by two orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields. We employ a three-dimensional semi-classical model that fully accounts for the electron and nuclear motion in strong fields. We control FDI triggered by a strong near-infrared laser field with a weak mid-infrared laser field. This control as a function of the time delay between the two pulses is demonstrated when the FDI probability and the distribution of the momentum of the escaping electron along the mid-infra…
Atomic ionization by intense mid-infrared (mid-IR) pulses produces low electron energy features that the strong-field approximation, which is expected to be valid in the tunneling ionization regime characterized by small Keldysh parameters ($γ\ll 1$), cannot describe. These features include the low-energy structure (LES), the very-low-energy structure (VLES), and the more recently found zero-energy structure (ZES). They result from the interplay between the laser electric field and the atomic Coulomb field which controls the low-energy spectrum also for small $γ$. In the present joint experime…
When atoms or molecules are exposed to strong short-pulse infrared radiation, ionization as well as "frustrated tunneling ionization" (FTI) can occur, in which a portion of the almost ionized electrons recombine into the initial ground or an excited bound state. We analyze the ellipticity dependence of the relative signals that are predicted in a single-active electron approximation (SAE), the validity of which is checked against a parameter-free multi-electron \hbox{$R$-matrix} (close-coupling) with time dependence approach. We find good agreement between the results from both models, thereby…
The role of nucleus in strong-field nonsequential double ionization of Ar atoms is investigated using three-dimensional classical ensembles. By adjusting the nuclear Coulomb potential, we can excellently reproduce the experimental correlated electron and ion momentum spectra with laser intensities above the recollision threshold [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 263001 (2004)] and below the recollision threshold [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 053001 (2008)] quantitatively. Analysis reveals the detailed electronic dynamics when the nuclear Coulomb attraction plays a key role in the recollision process of nonsequen…
We explore the possibility of retrieving Auger spectra with FEL radiation. Using a laser pulse of 260 eV photon energy, we study the interplay of photo-ionization and Auger processes following the initial formation of a 2p inner-shell hole in Ar. Accounting for the fine structure of the ion states we demonstrate how to retrieve the Auger spectrum of $\mathrm{Ar^{+}\rightarrow Ar^{2+}}$. Moreover, considering two electrons in coincidence we also demonstrate how to retrieve the Auger spectrum of $\mathrm{Ar^{2+}\rightarrow Ar^{3+}}$.
We study frustrated double ionization in a strongly-driven heteronuclear molecule HeH$^{+}$ and compare with H$_2$. We compute the probability distribution of the sum of the final kinetic energies of the nuclei for strongly-driven HeH$^{+}$. We find that this distribution has more than one peak for strongly-driven HeH$^{+}$, a feature we do not find to be present for strongly-driven H$_{2}$. Moreover, we compute the probability distribution of the n quantum number of frustrated double ionization. We find that this distribution has several peaks for strongly-driven HeH$^{+}$, while the respecti…
Zhang and coworkers have recently reported results of experiments involving irradiation of argon clusters doped with bromofluorene chromophores by nanosecond-long pulses of 532 nm laser light. Multiply-charged ions of atomic argon (charge states, n, up to 7) and carbon (charge states up to 4) are observed which are sought to be rationalised using an evaporation model. The distinguishing facet of exploding clusters being progenitors of energetic ions and electrons constitutes the key driver for contemporary research in laser-cluster interactions; it is, therefore, important to point out inconsi…
We present an experimental study on the photoionization dynamics of non-resonant one-color two-photon single valence ionization of neutral argon atoms. Using 9.3 eV photons produced via high harmonic generation and a 3-D momentum imaging spectrometer, we detect the photoelectrons and ions produced from non-resonant two-photon ionization in coincidence. Photoionization from the $3p$ orbital produces a photoelectron scattering wave function with $p$ and $f$ partial wave components, which interfere and result in a photoelectron angular distribution with peak amplitude perpendicular to the VUV pol…
We study the formation of highly excited neutral atoms during the break-up of strongly-driven molecules. Past work on this significant phenomenon has shown that during the formation of highly excited neutral atoms ($\mathrm{H^{*}}$) during the break-up of H$_{2}$ in a linear laser field the electron that escapes does so either very quickly or after remaining bound for a few periods of the laser field. Here, we address the electron-nuclear dynamics in $\mathrm{H^{*}}$ formation in elliptical laser fields, through Coulomb explosion. We show that with increasing ellipticity two-electron effects a…
We have investigated multiphoton multiple ionization dynamics of argon and xenon atoms using a new x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) facility, SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free electron LAser (SACLA) in Japan, and identified that highly charged Xe ions with the charge state up to +26 are produced predominantly via four-photon absorption as well as highly charged Ar ions with the charge state up to +10 are produced via two-photon absorption at a photon energy of 5.5 keV. The absolute fluence of the XFEL pulse, needed for comparison between theory and experiment, has been determined using two-photon…
We demonstrate control over the localization of high-lying Rydberg wave packets in argon atoms with phase-locked orthogonally polarized two-color (OTC) laser fields. With a reaction microscope, we measured ionization signals of high-lying Rydberg states induced by a weak dc field and black-body radiation as a function of the relative phase between the two-color fields. We find that the dc-field ionization yields of high-lying Rydberg argon atoms oscillate with the relative two-color phase with a period of $2π$ while the photoionization signal by black-body radiation shows a period of $π$. Thes…
We perform numerical simulations for photoionization of the argon atom when exposed to a combined field of an infrared laser (abbreviated IR) and its 13th harmonic (H13) by solving the Time-Dependent Schrödinger Equation (TDSE)], noting that the associated energy spectrum displays a harmonic peak dressed by the IR and other peaks called side-bands SB+-n corresponds to the absorption (+n) and the emission (-n) of the n-infrared photons above the ionization threshold. In two-color H13+IR photoionization of argon, the analysis of the angular distribution of the ejected electron in the continuum, …
We report on the observation of discrete structures in the electron energy distribution for strong field double ionization of Argon at 394 nm. The experimental conditions were chosen in order to ensure a non-sequential ejection of both electrons with an intermediate rescattering step. We have found discrete ATI (above-threshold ionization) like peaks in the sum energy of both electrons, as predicted by all quantum mechanical calculations. More surprisingly however is the observation of two ATI combs in the energy distribution of the individual electrons.
In this paper, we have investigated the correlated electron emission of the nonsequence double ionization (NSDI) in an intense linearly polarized field. The theoretical model we employed is the semiclassical rescattering model, the model atom we used is the helium. We find a significant correlation between magnitude and direction of the momentum of two emission electrons, and give a good explanation for this striking phenomenon by observing the classical collisional trajectories. We argue that this correlation phenomenon is universal in NSDI process, as revealed by the recent experiment on the…
We present a theoretical study of atomic ionization due to an XUV pulse in the presence of an infrared laser. Within the strong field approximation and considering the periodicity and symmetry of the transition matrix we show that the photoelectron spectrum can be described from the contribution during only one (or half) infrared cycle. These symmetry and periodicity properties impress selection rules which destructively cancel certain sideband orders favoring others. In particular, we analyze the photoionization of Argon in four geometrical arrangements of the polarization vector and the phot…
K-line profiles emitted from a warm dense plasma environment are used for diagnostics of Ar droplet plasmas created by high energy laser pulses. We observe temperature gradients within the Ar droplet from cold temperatures of the order of some 10 eV up to higher temperatures of about 170 eV. Non-perturbative wave functions are calculated as well as ionization energies, binding energies and relevant emission energies using a chemical {\it ab initio} code. The plasma screening is considered within a perturbative approach to the Hamiltonian. The plasma effect influences the many-particle system r…
We investigate the ionization dynamics of Argon atoms irradiated by an ultrashort intense laser of a wavelength up to 3100 nm, addressing the momentum distribution of the photoelectrons with near-zero-energy. We find a surprising accumulation in the momentum distribution corresponding to meV energy and a \textquotedblleft V"-like structure at the slightly larger transverse momenta. Semiclassical simulations indicate the crucial role of the Coulomb attraction between the escaping electron and the remaining ion at extremely large distance. Tracing back classical trajectories, we find the tunneli…
We employ the time-dependent R-Matrix (TDRM) method to calculate anisotropy parameters for positive and negative sidebands of selected harmonics generated by two-color two-photon above threshold ionization of argon. We consider odd harmonics of an 800 nm field ranging from the 13th to 19th harmonic, overlapped by a fundamental 800 nm IR field. The anisotropy parameters obtained using the TDRM method are compared with those obtained using a second order perturbation theory with a model potential (MP) approach and a soft photon approximation (SPA) approach. Where available, a comparison is also …
Light-induced states are commonly observed in the photoionization spectra of laser-dressed atoms. The properties of autoionizing polaritons, entangled states of light and Auger resonances, however, are largely unexplored. We employ attosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy to study the evolution of autoionizing states in argon, dressed by a tunable femtosecond laser pulse. The avoided crossings between the $3s^{-1}4p$ and several light-induced states indicates the formation of polariton multiplets. We measure a controllable stabilization of the polaritons against ionization, in excellent ag…
We solve the three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a few-cycle circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulse interacting with an oriented target exemplified by an Argon atom, initially in a $3\text{p}_{x}$ or $3\text{p}_{y}$ state. The photoelectron momentum distributions show distinct signatures of the orbital structure of the initial state as well as the carrier-envelope phase of the applied pulse. Our \textit{ab initio} results are compared with results obtained using the length-gauge strong-field approximation, which allows for a clear interpretation of the results in te…
We report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of XUV ionization of atomic argon in the presence of a near-infrared laser field. The resulting energy- and angle- resolved photoemission spectra have been described in the literature as interferences among different photoionization trajectories. Electron trajectories stemming from different optical laser cycles give rise to \textit{intercycle} interference energy and result in new peaks known as sidebands. These sidebands are modulated by a coarse grained (gross) structure coming from the \textit{intracycle} interference of the electr…
We present a theoretical quasiclassical study of the formation, during Coulomb explosion, of two highly excited neutral H atoms (double H$^{*}$) of strongly driven H$_2$. In this process, after the laser field is turned off each electron occupies a Rydberg state of an H atom. We show that two-electron effects are important in order to correctly account for double H$^{*}$ formation. We find that the route to forming two H$^{*}$ atoms is similar to pathway B that was identified in Phys. Rev. A {\bf 85} 011402 (R) as one of the two routes leading to single H$^{*}$ formation. However, instead of o…
We present the first demonstration of two-photon double ionization of neon using an intense extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulse train (APT) in a photon energy regime where both direct and sequential mechanisms are allowed. For an APT generated through high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in argon we achieve a total pulse energy close to 1 $μ$J, a central energy of 35 eV and a total bandwidth of $\sim30$ eV. The APT is focused by broadband optics in a neon gas target to an intensity of $3\cdot10^{12} $W$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$. By tuning the photon energy across the threshold for the sequential …
We present a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the relativistic non-dipole effects in strong-field atomic ionisation by near-infrared linearly-polarised few-cycle laser pulses in the intensity range 1014 -1015 W/cm2. We record high-resolution photoelectron momentum distributions of argon using a reaction microscope and compare our measurements with a truly ab-initio fully relativistic 3D model based on the time-dependent Dirac equation. We observe counter-intuitive peak shifts of the transverse electron momentum distribution in the direction opposite to that of laser propagation a…
The full three-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions of argon are measured in intense near-circularly polarized laser fields. We observed that the transverse momentum distribution of ejected electrons by 410-nm near-circularly polarized field is unexpectedly narrowed with increasing laser intensity, which is contrary to the conventional rules predicted by adiabatic theory. By analyzing the momentum-resolved angular momentum distribution measured experimentally and the corresponding trajectories of ejected electrons semiclassically, the narrowing can be attributed to a temporary trap…
Absolute Ar XK (3 keV) and Xe XL (4 keV) photon yields are measured as a function of laser peak intensity, for large (104 - 105 atoms) argon and xenon clusters submitted to intense laser pulses. A clear threshold behavior is observed. The intensity threshold is found as low as 2 1014 Wcm-2, a value matching the production of singly-charged argon or doubly-charged xenon by optical field ionization. Possible mechanisms involved in the inner-shell ionization are discussed. The outcome on the optimization of keV X-ray production is underlined.
We report on the measurement of electron emission after the interaction of strong laser pulses with atoms and molecules. These electrons originate from high-lying Rydberg states with quantum numbers up to $n \lesssim 120$ formed by frustrated field ionization. Simulations show that both tunneling ionization by a weak dc field and photoionization by the black-body radiation contribute to delayed electron emission on the nano- to microsecond scale. We measured ionization rates from these Rydberg states by coincidence spectroscopy. Further, the dependence of the Rydberg-state production on the el…
We present a theoretical framework to describe state-resolved ionization dynamics of neon atoms driven by ultraintense x-ray free-electron-laser pulses. In general, x-ray multiphoton ionization dynamics of atoms have been described by time-dependent populations of the electronic configurations visited during the ionization dynamics, neglecting individual state-to-state transition rates and energies. Combining a state-resolved electronic-structure calculation, based on first-order many-body perturbation theory, with a Monte Carlo rate-equation method, enables us to study state-resolved dynamics…
Two XUV-photon double ionization of Ne, induced by an intense few-pulse attosecond train with a ~ 4 fs envelope duration is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experiment is performed at ELI-ALPS utilizing the recently constructed 10 Hz gas phase high-order harmonic generation SYLOS GHHG-COMPACT beamline. A total pulse energy up to ~1 μJ generated in Argon in conjunction with high reflectivity optics in the XUV region, allowed the observation of the doubly charged state of Ne induced by 40 eV central XUV photon energies. The interaction of the intense attosecond pulse train with…
The sub-cycle dynamics of electrons driven by strong laser fields is central to the emerging field of attosecond science. We demonstrate how the dynamics can be probed through high-order harmonic generation, where different trajectories leading to the same harmonic order are initiated at different times, thereby probing different field strengths. We find large differences between the trajectories with respect to both their sensitivity to driving field ellipticity and resonant enhancement. To accurately describe the ellipticity dependence of the long trajectory harmonics we must include a sub-c…
The laser intensity dependence of the recoil energies from the Coulomb explosion of small argon clusters has been investigated by resolving the contributions of the individual charge states to the ion recoil energy spectra. Between $10^{14}$ and $10^{15}$ W/cm$^2$ the high-energy tail of the ion energy spectra changes its shape and develops into the well-known knee feature, which results from the cluster size distribution, laser focal averaging, and ionization saturation. Resolving the contributions of the different charge states to the recoil energies, the experimental data reveal that the ba…
We report on the non-adiabatic offset of the initial electron momentum distribution in the plane of polarization upon single ionization of argon by strong field tunneling and show how to experimentally control the degree of non-adiabaticity. Two-color counter- and co-rotating fields (390 and 780 nm) are compared to show that the non-adiabatic offset strongly depends on the temporal evolution of the laser electric field. We introduce a simple method for the direct access to the non-adiabatic offset using two-color counter- and co-rotating fields. Further, for a single-color circularly polarized…
Recent high resolution measurements of the momenta of two electrons emitted from Argon atoms in a strong laser field show a strong preference for the outgoing electrons to have similar momenta and to be ejected in the same direction along the field. We discuss the final stages of this process in a classical model in the spirit of Wanniers approach to double ionization after electron impact. Starting from an intermediate state of high but negative energy the field opens up a channel through which both electrons can escape. Near the threshold for this process Coulomb repulsion favors an escape w…
We study photoionization of argon atoms excited by attosecond pulses using an interferometric measurement technique. We measure the difference in time delays between electrons emitted from the $3s^2$ and from the $3p^6$ shell, at different excitation energies ranging from 32 to 42 eV. The determination of single photoemission time delays requires to take into account the measurement process, involving the interaction with a probing infrared field. This contribution can be estimated using an universal formula and is found to account for a substantial fraction of the measured delay.
We directly measure the nonlinear optical response in argon and nitrogen in a thin gas target to laser intensities near the ionization threshold. No instantaneous negative nonlinear refractive index is observed, nor is saturation, in contrast with a previous measurement [Loriot et al., Opt. Express v. 17, 13429 (2009)] and calculations [Brée et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. v. 106, 183902 (2011)]. In addition, we are able to cleanly separate the instantaneous and rotational components of the nonlinear response in nitrogen. In both Ar and N$_2$, we observe the peak instantaneous index response scale li…
We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of non-sequential double ionization (NSDI) in argon driven by a 3100-nm laser source. The correlated photoelectron momentum distribution (PMD) shows a strong dependence on the pulse duration, and the evolution of the PMD can be explained by an envelope-induced intensity effect. Determined by the time difference between tunneling and rescattering, the laser vector potential at the ionization time of the bound electron will be influenced by the pulse duration, leading to different drift momenta. Such a mechanism is extracted through a classic…
The impact of atomic excited states is investigated via a detailed model of laser-cluster interactions, which is applied to rare gas clusters in intense femtosecond pulses in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV). This demonstrates the potential for a two-step ionization process in laser-cluster interactions, with the resulting intermediate excited states allowing for the creation of high charge states and the rapid dissemination of laser pulse energy. The consequences of this excitation mechanism are demonstrated through simulations of recent experiments in argon clusters interacting with XUV radiati…
