It is shown that the second-order moment of helicity distribution (the Levich-Tsinober invariant of inviscid hydrodynamics) can be preserved as an adiabatic invariant in magnetohydrodynamics. The distributed chaos approach and inertial range phenomenology have been developed for the magnetohydrodynamic processes dominated by this adiabatic invariant, and some consequences of the theoretical consideration have been compared with results of direct numerical simulations and measurements in the solar wind. Helical scaling in interstellar MHD turbulence has been also briefly discussed in this context.
An extended inertial range dominated by the cross-helicity effects has been studied for forced (statistically steady) and for freely decaying magnetohydrodynamic MHD turbulence (with and without imposed/mean magnetic field) using the spatio-temporal distributed chaos approach. Good agreement with results of direct numerical simulations, laboratory measurements in MHD wind (plasma) tunnel, measurements in the Earth's magnetosheath and in the solar wind has been established. A spontaneous breaking of local reflection (mirror) symmetry has been briefly discussed for the MHD turbulence with zero a…
The purpose of this work is to investigate the spectral properties of the developed isotropic (non-Alfven) MHD turbulence stationary excited by an external force, which injects the cross helicity into the flow simultaneously with the energy. It is shown that the cross helicity blocks the spectral energy transfer in MHD turbulence and results in energy accumulation in the system. This accumulation proceeds until the vortex intensification compensates the decreasing efficiency of nonlinear interactions. The formula for estimating the average turbulence energy is obtained for the set ratio betwee…
For the quadratic helicity $χ^{(2)}$ we present a generalization of the Arnol'd inequality which relates the magnetic energy to the quadratic helicity, which poses a lower bound. We then introduce the quadratic helicity density using the classical magnetic helicity density and its derivatives along magnetic field lines. For practical purposes we also compute the flow of the quadratic helicity and show that for an $α^2$-dynamo setting it coincides with the flow of the square of the classical helicity. We then show how the quadratic helicity can be extended to obtain an invariant even under comp…
The objective of the present paper is to investigate the constancy of the topological invariant denoted non-barotropic generalized cross helicity in the case of non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD). Existing work considers only ideal barotropic MHD and ideal non-barotropic MHD. The non-ideal MHD case was not explored probably because of its mathematical complexity. Here we consider dissipative processes in the form of thermal conduction, finite electrical conductivity and viscosity and the effect of these processes on the cross helicity conservation. Analytical approach has been adopted to obta…
Using results of laboratory experiments, direct numerical simulations, geomagnetic and solar observations, it is shown that high moments of helicity distribution can dominate power spectra of the magnetic field generated by the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) dynamo in swirling turbulence even for the cases with zero global helicity. The notion of helical distributed chaos has been used for this purpose.
We briefly review helicity dynamics, inverse and bi-directional cascades in fluid and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, with an emphasis on the latter. The energy of a turbulent system, an invariant in the non-dissipative case, is transferred to small scales through nonlinear mode coupling. Fifty years ago, it was realized that, for a two-dimensional fluid, energy cascades instead to larger scales, and so does magnetic helicity in three-dimensional MHD. However, evidence obtained recently indicates that in fact, for a range of governing parameters, there are systems for which their ideal i…
We study a turbulent helical dynamo in a periodic domain by solving the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with the FLASH code using the divergence-cleaning eight-wave method and compare our results with direct numerical simulations (DNS) using the Pencil Code. At low resolution, FLASH reproduces the DNS results qualitatively by developing the large-scale magnetic field expected from DNS, but at higher resolution, no large-scale magnetic field is obtained. In all those cases in which a large-scale magnetic field is generated, the ideal MHD results yield too little power at small scales.…
Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) provides the simplest description of magnetic plasma turbulence in a variety of astrophysical and laboratory systems. MHD turbulence with nonzero cross helicity is often called imbalanced, as it implies that the energies of Alfvén fluctuations propagating parallel and anti-parallel the background field are not equal. Recent analytical and numerical studies have revealed that at every scale, MHD turbulence consists of regions of positive and negative cross helicity, indicating that such turbulence is inherently locally imbalanced. In this paper, results from high reso…
Besides total energy, three-dimensional incompressible Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) possesses two inviscid invariants which are the magnetic helicity and the generalized helicity. New exact relations are derived for homogeneous (non-isotropic) stationary Hall MHD turbulence (and also for its inertialess electron MHD limit) with non-zero helicities and in the asymptotic limit of large Reynolds numbers. The universal laws are written only in terms of mixed second-order structure functions, i.e. the scalar product of two different increments. It provides, therefore, a direct measurement of the…
In this paper, we examine the dimensionality of a single electrically driven vortex bounded by two no-slip and perfectly insulating horizontal walls distant by $h$. The study was performed in the weakly inertial limit by means of an asymptotic expansion, which is valid for any Hartmann number. We show that the dimensionality of the leading order can be fully described using the single parameter $l_z^ν/ h$, where $l_z^ν$ represents the distance over which the Lorentz force is able to act before being balanced by viscous dissipation. The base flow happens to introduce inertial recirculations in …
It is shown, using results of recent direct numerical simulations, that spectral properties of distributed chaos in MHD turbulence with zero mean magnetic field are similar to those of hydrodynamic turbulence. An exception is MHD spontaneous breaking of space translational symmetry, when the stretched exponential spectrum $\exp(-k/k_β)^β$ has $β=4/7$.
The free decay of MHD turbulence at large Reynolds numbers is studied numerically using a shell model. We study the statistical properties based on representative sample of realisations (128 realisations for each type of initial conditions) over the period of $10^5$ large-scale turnover times. The performed simulations show that the force-free non-helical MHD turbulence can demonstrate two different scenarios of evolution in spite of similar initial conditions. Within the first scenario, the cross-helicity accumulation is so fast that the energy cascade vanishes before significant magnetic ene…
The distributed chaos driven by Levich-Tsinober (helicity) integral: $I=\int \langle h({\bf x},t)~h({\bf x}+{\bf r}, t)\rangle d{\bf r}$ has been studied. It is shown that the helical distributed chaos can be considered as basis for complex turbulent flows with interplay between large-scale coherent structures and small-scale turbulence, such as Cuette-Taylor flow, wake behind cylinder and turbulent flow in the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) with inserted limiters. In the last case appearance of the helical distributed chaos, caused by the limiters, results in improvement of radial particle confin…
In this paper we discuss conservation laws in ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and gas dynamics associated with advected invariants. The invariants in some cases, can be related to fluid relabelling symmetries associated with the Lagrangian map. There are different classes of invariants that are advected or Lie dragged with the flow. Simple examples are the advection of the entropy S (a 0-form), and the conservation of magnetic flux (an invariant 2-form advected with the flow). The magnetic flux conservation law is equivalent to Faraday's equation. We discuss the gauge condition required for t…
In this paper we investigate the dynamics of magnetic helicity in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulent flows focusing at scales larger than the forcing scale. Our results show a nonlocal inverse cascade of magnetic helicity, which occurs directly from the forcing scale into the largest scales of the magnetic field. We also observe that no magnetic helicity and no energy is transferred to an intermediate range of scales sufficiently smaller than the container size and larger than the forcing scale. Thus, the statistical properties of this range of scales, which increases with scale separation, i…
We investigate the impact of a solid-body rotation $Ω_0$ on the large-scale dynamics of an incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulent flow in presence of a background magnetic field $\bf B_0$ and at low Rossby number. Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations are performed in a periodic box, at unit magnetic Prandtl number and with a forcing at intermediate wavenumber $k_f=20$. When $Ω_0$ is aligned with $\bf B_0$ (i.e. $θ\equiv \widehat{\left(Ω_{0}, \bf B_0 \right)} = 0$), inverse transfer is found for the magnetic spectrum at $k<k_f$. This transfer is stronger when the forcing excites…
Helical distributed chaos in magnetic field has been studied using results of direct numerical simulations (dominated by magnetic helicity), of a laboratory experiment with plasma wind tunnel and of solar wind measurements (dominated by combined magnetic and cross helicity effects). The solar wind measurements, used for the spectral computations, were produced by Helios-1 and Ulysses missions for low and high heliolatitudes respectively and for high solar wind speed at $0.4 < R <4.5$ AU (where $R$ is distance from the Sun).
The role of the moments of helicity distribution in rotating turbulence has been studied using the notion of helical distributed chaos. Results of the direct numerical simulations, laboratory experiments and geophysical observations have been used in this investigation. It is shown, in particular, that even for the cases when the global helicity is equal to zero at least even moments are usually non-zero (due to the appearance of the local spatial regions with strong negative and positive helicity) and can play a significant role in the rotating turbulence as adiabatic invariants. Rotating buo…
The ideal invariants present in the formalism of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), i.e. global quantities that are conserved in the absence of sources and dissipative effects, play an important role in various theoretical and numerical studies of MHD turbulence. The fluxes of these ideal invariants represent separate channels that transfer the information across different scales in a turbulent system. Once a statistically stationary state of turbulence is reached, the amount of any ideal invariant quantity introduced in the system by a forcing mechanism equals the amount of the same quantity removed…
Helicity, a measure of the breakage of reflectional symmetry representing the topology of turbulent flows, contributes in a crucial way to their dynamics and to their fundamental statistical properties. We review several of their main features, both new and old, as the discovery of bi-directional cascades or the role of helical vortices in the enhancement of large-scale magnetic fields in the dynamo problem. The dynamical contribution in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) of the cross-correlation between velocity and induction is discussed as well. We consider next how turbulent transport is affected b…
To investigate the effect of energy and helicity on the growth of magnetic field, helical kinetic forcing was applied to the magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) system that had a specific distribution of energy and helicity as initial conditions. Simulation results show the saturation of a system is not influenced by the initial conditions, but the growth rate of large scale magnetic field is proportionally dependent on the initial large scale magnetic energy and helicity. It is already known that the helical component of small scale magnetic field(i.e., current helicity $<{\bf j}\cdot {\bf b}>$) quenche…
Recent progress regarding the noncanonical Hamiltonian formulation of extended magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD), a model with Hall drift and electron inertia, is summarized. The advantages of the Hamiltonian approach are invoked to study some general properties of XMHD turbulence, and to compare them against their ideal MHD counterparts. For instance, the helicity flux transfer rates for XMHD are computed, and Liouville's theorem for this model is also verified. The latter is used, in conjunction with the absolute equilibrium states, to arrive at the spectra for the invariants, and to determine the…
The quasilinear mean-field theory for driven MHD turbulence leads to the result that the observed cross helicity <u \cdot b> may directly yield the magnetic eddy diffusivity η_{T} of the quiet Sun. In order to model the cross helicity at the solar surface, magnetoconvection under the presence of a vertical large-scale magnetic field is simulated with the nonlinear MHD code NIRVANA. The very robust result of the calculations is that < u_z b_z >\simeq 2 < u\cdot b> independent of the applied magnetic field amplitude. The correlation coefficient for the cross helicity is about 10%. Of similar rob…
Role of the dissipative invariants in isotropic homogeneous MHD turbulence has been studied using the distributed chaos approach and results of direct numerical simulations. Effects of weak imposed mean magnetic field and magnetic fields in undisturbed solar photosphere are also briefly discussed in this context.
The influence of initially given small scale magnetic energy($E_M(0)$) and helicity($H_M(0)$) on the magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) dynamo was investigated. Equations for $E_M$(t), $H_M$(t), and electromotive force($\langle {\bf v}\times {\bf b}\rangle$, $EMF$) were derived and solved. The solutions indicate small scale magnetic field(${\bf b}_i$) caused by $E_M$(0) modifies $EMF$ and generates additional terms of which effect depends on magnetic diffusivity $η$, position of initial conditions($IC$s) $k_f$, and time ($\sim e^{-ηk_f^2 t}$). ${\bf b}_i$ increases the inverse cascade of energy resulti…
We study the chaotic properties of a turbulent conducting fluid using direct numerical simulation in the Eulerian frame. The maximal Lyapunov exponent is measured for simulations with varying Reynolds number and magnetic Prandtl number. We extend the Ruelle theory of hydrodynamic turbulence to magnetohydrodynamic turbulence as a working hypothesis and find broad agreement with results. In other simulations we introduce magnetic helicity and these simulations show a diminution of chaos, which is expected to be eliminated at maximum helicity. We also find that the difference between two initiall…
In analogy with the load and the metage in hydrodynamics, we define magnetohydrodynamic load and magnetohydrodynamic metage in the case of magnetofluids. They can be used to write the magnetic field in MHD in Clebsch's form. We show how these two concepts can be utilised to derive the magnetic analogue of the Ertel's theorem and also, how in the presence of non-trivial topology of the magnetic field in the magnetofluid one may associate the linking number of the magnetic field lines with the invariant MHD loads. The paper illustrates that the symmetry translation of the MHD metage in the corre…
The existence of partially conserved enstrophy-like quantities is conjectured to cause inverse energy transfers to develop embedded in magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) turbulence, in analogy to the influence of enstrophy in two-dimensional nonconducting turbulence. By decomposing the velocity and magnetic fields in spectral space onto helical modes, we identify subsets of three-wave (triad) interactions conserving two new enstrophy-like quantities which can be mapped to triad interactions recently identified with facilitating large-scale $α$-type dynamo action and the inverse transfer of magnetic h…
A nested polyhedra model has been developed for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. Driving only the velocity field at large scales with random, divergence free forcing results in a clear, stationary $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum for both kinetic and magnetic energies. Since the model naturaly effaces disparate scale interactions, does not have a guide field and avoids injecting any sign of helicity by random forcing, the resulting three dimensional k-spectrum is statistically isotropic. The strengths and weaknesses of the model are demonstrated by considering large or small magnetic Prandtl numbers. …
Conservation laws in ideal gas dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) associated with fluid relabelling symmetries are derived using Noether's first and second theorems. Lie dragged invariants are discussed in terms of the MHD Casimirs. A nonlocal conservation law for fluid helicity applicable for a non-barotropic fluid involving Clebsch variables is derived using Noether's theorem, in conjunction with a fluid relabelling symmetry and a gauge transformation. A nonlocal cross helicity conservation law involving Clebsch potentials, and the MHD energy conservation law are derived by the same met…
With the help of a model of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence tested previously, we explore high Reynolds number regimes up to equivalent resolutions of 6000^3 grid points in the absence of forcing and with no imposed uniform magnetic field. For the given initial condition chosen here, with equal kinetic and magnetic energy, the flow ends up being dominated by the magnetic field, and the dynamics leads to an isotropic Iroshnikov-Kraichnan energy spectrum. However, the locally anisotropic magnetic field fluctuations perpendicular to the local mean field follow a Kolmogorov law. We find that …
It is shown that helicity dynamics dominates spectral distribution of the velocity fluctuations in turbulent thermal convection at moderate and large values of the Rayleigh number (distributed chaos and scaling respectively). The large-scale circulation (wind) in the turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection is especially sensitive to the helicity dynamics and its chaotic reversals can be associated with the reversals of the mean helicity sign (the ergodic restoration of the reflectional symmetry in a long run). Results of the laboratory experiments and measurements in the free atmospheric convecti…
The direction of cascades in a two-dimensional model that takes electron inertia and ion sound Larmor radius into account is studied, resulting in analytical expressions for the absolute equilibrium states of the energy and helicities. It is found that typically both the energy and magnetic helicity at scales shorter than electron skin depth have direct cascade, while at large scales the helicity has an inverse cascade as established earlier for reduced magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It is also found that the introduction of gyro-effects allows for the existence of negative temperature (conjugate…
We derive a new shell model of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in which the energy transfers are not necessary local. Like the original MHD equations, the model conserves the total energy, magnetic helicity, cross-helicity and volume in phase space (Liouville's theorem) apart from the effects of external forcing, viscous dissipation and magnetic diffusion. In the absence of magnetic field the model exhibits a statistically stationary kinetic energy solution with a Kolmogorov spectrum. The dynamo action from a seed magnetic field by the turbulent flow and the non linear interactions are st…
The ohmic decay of magnetic fields in the crusts of neutron stars is generally believed to be governed by Hall drift which leads to what is known as a Hall cascade. Here we show that helical and fractionally helical magnetic fields undergo strong inverse cascading like in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), but the magnetic energy decays more slowly with time $t$: $\propto t^{-2/5}$ instead of $\propto t^{-2/3}$ in MHD. Even for a nonhelical magnetic field there is a certain degree of inverse cascading for sufficiently strong magnetic fields. The inertial range scaling with wavenumber $k$ is compatibl…
The multiplicity of routes from deterministic chaos to turbulence caused by the spontaneous breaking of the local reflectional symmetry in the flows induced by Rayleigh-Taylor instability has been studied using the notion of distributed chaos. Results of numerical simulations, and laboratory and oceanic measurements have been used for this purpose. Small-scale chaotic MHD dynamo and chaotic Richtmyer-Meshkov mixing layer have been briefly discussed in this context.
Soft and hard spontaneous breaking of space translational symmetry (homogeneity) have been studied in turbulent wakes by means of distributed chaos. In the case of the soft translational symmetry breaking the vorticity correlation integral $\int_{V} \langle {\boldsymbol ω} ({\bf x},t) \cdot {\boldsymbol ω} ({\bf x} + {\bf r},t) \rangle_{V} d{\bf r}$ dominates the distributed chaos and the chaotic spectra $\exp-(k/k_β)^{β}$ have $β=1/2$. In the case of the hard translational symmetry breaking, control on the distributed chaos is switched from one type of fundamental symmetry to another (in this…
The inverse transfer of magnetic helicity is investigated through direct numerical simulations of large-scale-mechanically-driven turbulent flows in the isothermal ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) framework. The mechanical forcing is either purely solenoidal or purely compressive and the turbulent steady-states considered exhibit root mean square (RMS) Mach numbers 0.1 $\lesssim$ M $\lesssim$ 11. A continuous small-scale electromotive forcing injects magnetic helical fluctuations, which lead to the build-up of ever larger magnetic structures. Spectral scaling exponents are observed which, for …
We have carried out numerical simulations of freely decaying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in three dimensions, which can be applied to the evolution of stochastic magnetic fields in the early Universe. For helical magnetic fields an inverse cascade effect is observed in which magnetic helicity and energy is transfered from smaller scales to larger scales, accompanied by power law growth in the characteristic length scale of the magnetic field. The magnetic field quickly reaches a scaling regime with self-similar evolution, and power law behaviour at high wavenumbers. We also find power…
Spatial buoyancy-helical distributed chaos (turbulence) in the cumulus, stratiform, stratocumulus, cirrus and cirrus mammatus clouds have been studied using results of direct numerical simulations and measurements in cloudy atmosphere. It is shown that in the considered cases the moments of helicity distribution dominate the kinetic energy spectra both in the middle of the clouds and in the cloud-top regions.
Spectral transfer processes in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence are investigated analytically by decomposition of the velocity and magnetic fields in Fourier space into helical modes. Steady solutions of the dynamical system which governs the evolution of the helical modes are determined, and a stability analysis of these solutions is carried out. The interpretation of the analysis is that unstable solutions lead to energy transfer between the interacting modes while stable solutions do not. From this, a dependence of possible interscale energy and helicity transfers on the helicities of t…
High Reynolds number isotropic magneto-hydro-dynamic turbulence in the presence of large scale magnetic fields is investigated as a function of the magnetic field strength. For a variety of flow configurations the energy dissipation rate ε, follows the Kolmogorov scaling ε~ U^3/L even when the large scale magnetic field energy is twenty times larger than the kinetic. Further increase of the magnetic energy showed a transition to the ε~ U^2 B / L scaling implying that magnetic shear becomes more efficient at this point at cascading the energy than the velocity fluctuations. Strongly helical con…
The search of ways to generalize the theory of strong MHD turbulence for the case of non-zero cross-helicity (or energy imbalance) has attracted considerable interest recently. In our earlier publications we performed three-dimensional numerical simulations and showed that some of existing models are inconsistent with numerics. In this paper we focused our attention on low-imbalance limit and performed new high-resolution simulations. The results strongly suggest that in the limit of small imbalances we smoothly transition to a standard Goldreich-Sridhar (1995) balanced model. We also claim th…
Results of direct numerical simulations and laboratory experiments have been used in order to show that the buoyancy driven bubbly flows at high gas volume fraction are mixed by deterministic chaos with typical exponential spectrum of the liquid kinetic energy, whereas at moderate and small gas volume fraction it is a distributed chaos (turbulence or pseudo-turbulence) dominated by the third and second moments of helicity distribution with the stretched exponential spectra of the kinetic energy. Interaction of the bubbles with isotropic (behind an active grid) and near-wall turbulent flows has…
It has been recognized that the turbulent cross helicity (correlation between the velocity and magnetic-field fluctuations) can play an important role in several magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma phenomena such as the global magnetic-field generation, turbulence suppression, etc. Despite its relevance to the cross-helicity evolution, little attention has been paid to the dissipation rate of the turbulent cross helicity, $ε_W$. In this paper, we consider the model expression for the dissipation rate of the turbulent cross helicity. In addition to the algebraic model, an evolution equation of $ε_…
Variational principles for magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) were introduced by previous authors both in Lagrangian and Eulerian form. In this paper we introduce simpler Eulerian variational principles from which all the relevant equations of non-barotropic MHD can be derived for certain field topologies. The variational principle is given in terms of five independent functions for non-stationary non-barotropic flows. This is less then the eight variables which appear in the standard equations of barotropic MHD which are the magnetic field $\vec B$ the velocity field $\vec v$, the entropy $s$ and the…
