Variational principles for magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) were introduced by previous authors both in Lagrangian and Eulerian form. In this paper we introduce simpler Eulerian variational principles from which all the relevant equations of non-barotropic MHD can be derived for certain field topologies.
The variational principle is given in terms of five independent functions for non-stationary non-barotropic flows. This is less then the eight variables which appear in the standard equations of barotropic MHD which are the magnetic field $\vec B$ the velocity field $\vec v$, the entropy $s$ and the density $ρ$.
The case of non-barotropic MHD in which the internal energy is a function of both entropy and density was not discussed in previous works which were concerned with the simplistic barotropic case. It is important to understand the rule of entropy and temperature for the variational analysis of MHD. Thus we introduce a variational principle of non-barotropic MHD and show that five functions will suffice to describe this physical system.
We will also discuss the implications of the above analysis for topological constants. It will be shown that while cross helicity is not conserved for non-barotropic MHD a variant of this quantity is. The implications of this to non-barotropic MHD stability is discussed.
Variational principles for magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) were in\-troduced by previous authors both in Lagrangian and Eulerian form. In this paper we introduce simpler Eulerian variational principles from which all the relevant equations of non-barotropic stationary magnetohydrodynamics can be derived for certain field topologies. The variational principle is given in terms of three independent functions for stationary non-barotropic flows. This is a smaller number of variables than the eight variables which appear in the standard equations of non-barotropic magnetohydrodynamics which are the mag…
We derive a Noether current for the Eulerian variational principle of ideal non-barotropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It was shown previously that ideal non-barotropic MHD is mathematically equivalent to a five function field theory with an induced geometrical structure in the case that field lines cover surfaces and this theory can be described using a variational principle. Here we use various symmetries of the flow to derive topological constants of motion through the derived Noether current and discuss their implication for non-barotropic MHD.

The theorem of Noether dictates that for every continuous symmetry group of an Action the system must possess a conservation law. In this paper we discuss some subgroups of Arnold's labelling symmetry diffeomorphism related to non-barotropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and the conservations laws associated with them. Those include but are not limited to the metage translation group and the associated topological conservations law of non-barotropic cross helicity.
The variational principle of barotropic Eulerian fluid dynamics is known to be quite cumbersome containing as much as eleven independent functions. This is much more than the the four functions (density and velocity) appearing in the Eulerian equations of motion. This fact may have discouraged applications of the variational method. In this paper a four function Eulerian variational principle is suggested and the implications are discussed briefly.

The objective of the present paper is to investigate the constancy of the topological invariant denoted non-barotropic generalized cross helicity in the case of non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD). Existing work considers only ideal barotropic MHD and ideal non-barotropic MHD. The non-ideal MHD case was not explored probably because of its mathematical complexity. Here we consider dissipative processes in the form of thermal conduction, finite electrical conductivity and viscosity and the effect of these processes on the cross helicity conservation. Analytical approach has been adopted to obta…

Cross helicity is not conserved in non-barotropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) (as opposed to barotropic or incompressible MHD). Here we show that variational analysis suggests a new kind of cross helicity which is conserved in the non barotropic case. The non barotropic cross helicity reduces to the standard cross helicity under barotropic assumptions. The new cross helicity is conserved even for topologies for which the variational principle does not apply.
We present a new Hamiltonian formulation of barotropic Hall magnetohydrodynamics in two complementary approaches based on Dirac's constraint analysis. In one case the Hamiltonian is canonical involving physical variables only but the brackets are noncanonical, while in the other case the phase space is enlarged to retain the canonical structure of brackets.
Clebsch potential gauge field theory for magnetohydrodynamics is developed based in part on the theory of Calkin (1963). It is shown how the polarization vector ${\bf P}$ in Calkin's approach, naturally arises from the Lagrange multiplier constraint equation for Faraday's equation for the magnetic induction ${\bf B}$, or alternatively from the magnetic vector potential form of Faraday's equation. Gauss's equation, (divergence of ${\bf B}$ is zero), is incorporated in the variational principle by means of a Lagrange multiplier constraint. Noether's theorem, coupled with the gauge symmetries is …
Newcomb's Lagrangian for ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in Lagrangian labeling is discretized using discrete exterior calculus. Variational integrators for ideal MHD are derived thereafter. Besides being symplectic and momentum-preserving, the schemes inherit built-in advection equations from Newcomb's formulation, and therefore avoid solving them and the accompanying error and dissipation. We implement the method in 2D and show that numerical reconnection does not take place when singular current sheets are present. We then apply it to studying the dynamics of the ideal coalescence instabil…
Ideal magnetohydrodynamics (IMHD) is strongly constrained by an infinite number of microscopic constraints expressing mass, entropy and magnetic flux conservation in each infinitesimal fluid element, the latter preventing magnetic reconnection. By contrast, in the Taylor relaxation model for formation of macroscopically self-organized plasma equilibrium states, all these constraints are relaxed save for global magnetic fluxes and helicity. A Lagrangian variational principle is presented that leads to a new, fully dynamical, \emph{relaxed magnetohydrodynamics} (RxMHD), such that all static solu…
The noncanonical Hamiltonian formulation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is used to construct variational principles for symmetric equilibrium configurations of magnetized plasma including flow. In particular, helical symmetry is considered and results on axial and translational symmetries are retrieved as special cases of the helical configurations. The symmetry condition, which allows the description in terms of a magnetic flux function, is exploited to deduce a symmetric form of the noncanonical Poisson bracket of MHD. Casimir invariants are then obtained directly from the Poisson bracket. Eq…
Hamiltonian extended magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD) is restricted to respect helical symmetry by reducing the Poisson bracket for 3D dynamics to a helically symmetric one, as an extension of the previous study for translationally symmetric XMHD (D.A. Kaltsas et al, Phys. Plasmas 24, 092504 (2017)). Four families of Casimir invariants are obtained directly from the symmetric Poisson bracket and they are used to construct Energy-Casimir variational principles for deriving generalized XMHD equilibrium equations with arbitrary macroscopic flows. The system is then cast into the form of Grad-Shafranov…

The formal stability analysis of Eulerian extended magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD) equilibria is considered within the noncanonical Hamiltonian framework by means of the energy-Casimir variational principle and the dynamically accessible stability method. Specifically, we find explicit sufficient stability conditions for axisymmetric XMHD and Hall MHD (HMHD) equilibria with toroidal flow and for equilibria with arbitrary flow under constrained perturbations. The dynamically accessible, second-order variation of the Hamiltonian, which can potentially provide explicit stability criteria for generic …
In the framework of the variational principle the canonical variables describing ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows of general type (i.e., with spatially varying entropy and nonzero values of all topological invariants) are introduced. The corresponding complete velocity representation enables us not only to describe the general type flows in terms of single-valued functions, but also to solve the intriguing problem of the ``missing'' MHD integrals of motion. The set of hitherto known MHD local invariants and integrals of motion appears to be incomplete: for the vanishing magnetic field it …
Coronal heating has been a long-standing conundrum in solar physics. Parker's conjecture that spontaneous current singularities lead to nanoflares that heat the corona has been controversial. In ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), can genuine current singularities emerge from a smooth 3D line-tied magnetic field? To numerically resolve this issue, the schemes employed must preserve magnetic topology exactly to avoid artificial reconnection in the presence of singular current densities. Structure-preserving numerical methods are favorable for mitigating numerical dissipation, and variational inte…
A new formulation of time-dependent Relaxed Magnetohydrodynamics (RxMHD) is derived variationally from Hamilton's Action Principle using microscopic conservation of mass, and macroscopic conservation of total magnetic helicity, cross helicity and entropy, as the only constraints on variations of density, pressure, fluid velocity, and magnetic vector potential over a relaxation domain. A novel phase-space version of the MHD Lagrangian is derived, which gives Euler--Lagrange equations consistent with previous work on exact ideal and relaxed MHD equilibria with flow, but generalizes the relaxatio…
We present two generalized hybrid kinetic-Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) models describing the interaction of a two-fluid bulk plasma, which consists of thermal ions and electrons, with energetic, suprathermal ion populations described by Vlasov dynamics. The dynamics of the thermal components are governed by standard fluid equations in the Hall MHD limit with the electron momentum equation providing an Ohm's law with Hall and electron pressure terms involving a gyrotropic electron pressure tensor. The coupling of the bulk, low-energy plasma with the energetic particle dynamics is accomplishe…
Two types of Eulerian action principles for relativistic extended magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) are formulated. With the first, the action is extremized under the constraints of density, entropy, and Lagrangian label conservation, which leads to a Clebsch representation for a generalized momentum and a generalized vector potential. The second action arises upon transformation to physical field variables, giving rise to a covariant bracket action principle, i.e., a variational principle in which constrained variations are generated by a degenerate Poisson bracket. Upon taking appropriate limits, t…
A general procedure for constructing action principles for continuum models via a generalization of Hamilton's principle of mechanics is described. Through the procedure, an action principle for a gyroviscous magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model is constructed. The model is shown to agree with a reduced version of Braginskii's fluid equations. The construction reveals the origin of the gyromap, a device used to derive previous gyrofluid models. Also, a systematic reduction procedure is presented for obtaining the Hamiltonian structure in terms of the noncanonical Poisson bracket. The construction …
The long-time relaxation of ideal two dimensional magnetohydrodynamic turbulence subject to the conservation of two infinite families of constants of motion---the magnetic and the "cross" topology invariants--is examined. The analysis of the Gibbs ensemble, where all integrals of motion are respected, predicts the initial state to evolve into an equilibrium, stable coherent structure (the most probable state) and decaying Gaussian turbulence (fluctuations) with a vanishing, but always positive temperature. The non-dissipative turbulence decay is accompanied by decrease in both the amplitude an…
Recently a variational integrator for ideal magnetohydrodynamics in Lagrangian labeling has been developed. Its built-in frozen-in equation makes it optimal for studying current sheet formation. We use this scheme to study the Hahm-Kulsrud-Taylor problem, which considers the response of a 2D plasma magnetized by a sheared field under sinusoidal boundary forcing. We obtain an equilibrium solution that preserves the magnetic topology of the initial field exactly, with a fluid mapping that is non-differentiable. Unlike previous studies that examine the current density output, we identify a singul…
