Despite the tremendous interest in halide perovskites in solar cells, the reason that the all-inorganic perovskite CsPbI$_3$ is unstable at room temperature remains mysterious. Here single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder pair distribution function (PDF) measurements characterize bulk perovskite CsPbI$_3$ from 100 to 295 K to elucidate its thermodynamic instability. While Cs occupies a single site from 100 to 150 K, it splits between two sites from 175 to 295 K with the second site having a lower effective coordination number, which along with other structural parameters suggests that Cs rattles in its coordination polyhedron. PDF measurements reveal that on the length scale of the unit cell, the Pb-I octahedra concurrently become greatly distorted, with one of the I-Pb-I angles approaching 82° compared to the ideal 90°. The rattling of Cs, low number of Cs-I contacts, and high degree of octahedral distortion cause the instability of perovskite-phase CsPbI$_3$. These results provide detailed structural information that may help to engineer greater stability of CsPbI$_3$ and other all-inorganic perovskites for use in solar cells.
We use solid-state methods to synthesize single crystals of perovskite-phase cesium lead iodide ($γ$-CsPbI3) that are kinetically stable at room temperature. Single crystal X-ray diffraction characterization shows that the compound is orthorhombic with the GdFeO3 structure at room temperature. Unlike conventional semiconductors, the optical absorption and the joint density-of-states of bulk $γ$-CsPbI3 is greatest near the band edge and decreases beyond Eg for at least 1.9 eV. Bulk $γ$-CsPbI3 does not show an excitonic resonance and has an optical band gap of 1.63(3) eV, ~90 meV smaller than ha…
The band-gaps of CsPbI$_3$ perovskite nanocrystals are measured by absorption spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures. Anomalous band-gap shifts are observed in CsPbI$_3$ nanocubes and nanoplatelets, which are modeled accurately by band-gap renormalization due to lattice vibrational modes. We find that decreasing dimensionality of the CsPbI$_3$ lattice in nanoplatelets greatly reduces electron-phonon coupling, and dominant out-of-plane quantum confinement results in a homogeneously broadened absorption lineshape down to cryogenic temperatures. An absorption tail forms at low-temperatures in CsP…
Halide Perovskite-Chalcohalide Nanocrystal Heterostructures as a Platform for the Synthesis and Investigation of the CsPbCl3-CsPbI3 Epitaxial Interface
Lattice defects affect the long-term stability of halide perovskite solar cells. Whereas simple point defects, i.e., atomic interstitials and vacancies, have been studied in great detail, here we focus on compound defects that are more likely to form under crystal growth conditions, such as compound vacancies or interstitials, and antisites. We identify the most prominent defects in the archetype inorganic perovskite CsPbI$_3$, through first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We find that under equilibrium conditions at room temperature, the antisite of Pb substituting Cs…
CsPbI3 has recently received tremendous attention as a possible absorber of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, CsPbI3-based PSCs have yet to achieve the high performance of the hybrid PSCs. In this work, we performed a density functional theory (DFT) study using the Cambridge Serial Total Energy Package (CASTEP) code for the cubic CsPbI3 absorber to compare and evaluate its structural, electronic, and optical properties. The calculated electronic band gap (Eg) using the GGA-PBE approach of CASTEP was 1.483 eV for this CsPbI3 absorber. Moreover, the computed density of states (DOS) exhibit…
Inorganic halide perovskite \ce{Cs(Rb)PbI3} has attracted significant research interest in the application of light-absorbing material of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Although there have been extensive studies on structural and electronic properties of inorganic halide perovskites, the investigation on their thermodynamic stability is lack. Thus, we investigate the effect of substituting Rb for Cs in \ce{CsPbI3} on the chemical decomposition and thermodynamic stability using first-principles thermodynamics. By calculating the formation energies of solid solutions \ce{Cs$_{1-x}$Rb$_x$PbI3} fr…
We explore the interface properties of perovskite heterostructure CsPbBr$_3$/CsPbI$_3$ through first-principles calculations. The structural interface is formed by the bonding of Cs-Br and Cs-I with bond length of $\sim$4.106 and 3.922 Å. The upshift of Goldsmith tolerance factor in the range $0.8<t<1$ from $t<0.8$ is revealed for the bi-layer interface, from bulk, reflecting the structural rearrangement from anisotropy to isotropy in confinement. The band gap arises mainly due to the energy difference of I-5p orbital than that of Br-4p at the valence band and Pb-6p at the conduction band. Hea…
Electron-phonon coupling was believed to govern the carrier transport in halide perovskites and related phases. Here we demonstrate that electron-electron interaction plays a direct and prominent role in the low-temperature electrical transport of compressed CsPbI3 and renders Fermi liquid (FL)-like behavior. By compressing δ-CsPbI3 to 80 GPa, an insulator-to-metal transition occurs, concomitant with the completion of a sluggish structural transition from the one-dimensional (1D) Pnma (δ) phase to a 3D Pmn21 (ε) phase. Deviation from FL behavior is observed in CsPbI3 upon entering the metallic…
One of the most significant features of lead-halide perovskites are their ability to have comparably slow recombination despite the fact that these materials are mostly processed from solution at room temperature. The slow recombination allows achieving high open-circuit voltages when the lead-halide perovskite layers are used in solar cells. This perspective discusses the state of the art of our understanding and of experimental data with regard to recombination and open-circuit voltages in lead-halide perovskites. A special focus is put onto open questions that the community has to tackle to…
Surface-defect passivation is key to achieving high photoluminescence quantum yield in lead halide perovskite nanocrystals. However, in perovskite light-emitting diodes these surface ligands also have to enable balanced charge injection into the nanocrystals to yield high efficiency and operational lifetime. In this respect, alkaline halides have been reported to passivate surface trap states and increase the overall stability of perovskite light emitters. On the one side, the incorporation of alkaline ions into the lead halide perovskite crystal structure is considered to counterbalance catio…
Ni et al. report minimum bulk trap densities of 10^11 cm-3 and 1-4 orders change in interfacial trap densities derived from drive-level capacitance profiling of lead halide perovskites. From basic electrostatic arguments, we show that such bulk trap densities cannot be resolved for a p-i-n perovskite solar cell for the reported layer thicknesses, while the apparent interfacial charge densities are a consequence of the geometrical capacitance and of charge injection into the perovskite layer.
Halide perovskites are promising materials for light-emitting and light-harvesting applications. In this context, two-dimensional perovskites such as nanoplatelets or Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson layered structures are important because of their structural flexibility, electronic confinement, and better stability. This review article brings forth an extensive overview of the recent developments of two-dimensional halide perovskites both in the colloidal and non-colloidal forms. We outline the strategy to synthesize and control the shape and discuss different crystalline phases and optoe…

The protection of halide perovskites is important for the performance and stability of emergent perovskite-based optoelectronic technologies. In this work, we investigate the potential inorganic protective coating materials ZnO, SrZrO3, and ZrO2 for the CsPbI3perovskite. The optimal interface registries are identified with Bayesian optimization. We then use semi-local density-functional theory (DFT) to determine the atomic structure at the interfaces of each coating material with the clean CsI-terminated surface and three reconstructed surface models with added PbI2and CsI complexes. For the f…
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are attracting great attention as the most promising candidate for the next generation solar cells. This is due to their low cost and high power conversion efficiency in spite of their relatively short period of development. Key components of PSCs are a variety of halide perovskites with ABX3 stoichiometry used as a photoabsorber, which brought the factual breakthrough in the field of photovoltaic (PV) technology with their outstanding optoelectronic properties. To commercialize PSCs in the near future, however, these materials need to be further improved for a be…
Previous theoretical calculations show azetidinium has the right radial size to form a 3D perovskite with lead halides [1], and has been shown to impart, as the A-site cation of ABX3 unit, beneficial properties to ferroelectric perovskites [2]. However, there has been very limited research into its use as the cation in lead halide perovskites to date. In this communication we report the synthesis and characterization of azetidinium-based lead mixed halide perovskite colloidal nanocrystals. The mixed halide system is iodine and chlorine unlike other reported nanocrystals in the literature where…
Metal-halide perovskites are a versatile material platform for light-harvesting and light-emitting applications as their variable chemical composition allows the optoelectronic properties to be tailored to specific applications. Halide mixing is one of the most powerful techniques to tune the optical bandgap of metal-halide perovskites across wide spectral ranges. However, halide mixing has commonly been observed to result in phase segregation, which reduces excited-state transport and limits device performance. While the current emphasis lies on the development of strategies to prevent phase …
In spite of intensive studies on the chalcogenides as conventional thermoelectrics, it remains a challenge to find a proper material with high electrical but low thermal conductivities. In this work, we introduced a new class of thermoelectrics, Ge-based inorganic halide perovskites \ce{CsGeX3} (X = I, Br, Cl), which were already known as a promising candidate for photovoltaic applications. By performing the lattice-dynamics calculations and solving the Boltzmann transport equation, we revealed that these perovskites have ultralow thermal conductivities below 0.18 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ while ver…

In particular, their large optical cross-sections, high photoconductance contrast, large carrier diffusion lengths, and mixed electronic/ionic transport mechanisms are attractive for enabling memory elements and neuromorphic devices that are written and/or read in …
Halide perovskites have recently gained widespread attention for their exceptional optoelectronic properties which have been illuminated by extensive spectroscopic investigations. In this article, nanophotonic surface-engineering using soft-lithography has been used to reproduce nanostructures with enhanced functionalities. A non-invasive optical technique based on Raman and photolumines-cence (PL) spectroscopy is employed to investigate the interactive effect of the thermal and optical behaviour in surface-patterned hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite thin films. The thermophys-ical pr…
Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites containing a mixture of iodide and bromide anions consistently perform better in donor-acceptor heterojunction solar cells than the standard methylammonium lead triiodide material. This observation is counterintuitive, as it is generally expected for photovoltaic materials that heterogeneities and compositional disorder cause reduced carrier diffusion length and conversion efficiency. Here, we combine ultrafast photoinduced electroabsorption and broadband fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopy measurements to scrutinize the carrier dynamics in mixed-c…
Lead halide perovskites are a remarkable class of materials that have emerged over the past decade as being suitable for application in a broad range of devices, such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, transistors, and memory devices, among others. While they are often solution-processed semiconductors deposited at low temperatures, perovskites exhibit properties one would only expect from highly pure inorganic crystals that are grown at high temperatures. This unique phenomenon has resulted in fast-paced progress toward record device performance; unfortunately, the basic science b…
Mixed-halide based hybrid perovskite semiconductors have attracted tremendous attention as a promising candidate for high efficient photovoltaic and light-emitting devices. However, these advanced perovskite materials may undergo phase segregation under light illumination due to halide ion migration, affecting their optoelectronic properties. Here, we report photo-excitation induced phase segregation in triple-cation mixed-halide perovskite films that yields to red-shift in photoluminescence response. We demonstrate that photo-excitation induced halide ion migration leads to the formation of s…
Point defects in metal halide perovskites play a critical role in determining their properties and optoelectronic performance; however, many open questions remain unanswered. In this work, we apply impedance spectroscopy and deep-level transient spectroscopy to characterize the ionic defect landscape in methylammonium lead triiodide ($MAPbI_3$) perovskites in which defects were purposely introduced by fractionally changing the precursor stoichiometry. Our results highlight the profound influence of defects on the electronic landscape, exemplified by their impact on the device built-in potentia…
Hybrid lead halide perovskites with 2D stacking structures have recently emerged as promising materials for optoelectronic applications. We report a method for growing 2D nanosheets of hybrid lead halide perovskites (I, Br and Cl), with tunable lateral sizes ranging from 0.05 to 8 microns, and a structure consisting of n stacked monolayers separated by long alkylamines, tunable from bulk down to n=1. The key to obtaining such a wide range of perovskite properties hinged on utilizing the respective lead halide nanosheets as precursors in a hot-injection synthesis that afforded careful control o…
2D Ruddlesden Popper perovskites have been extensively studied for their exceptional optical and electronic characteristics while only a few studies have shed light on their mechanical properties. The existing literature mainly discusses the mechanical strength of single crystal perovskites, however a systematic study towards structure tunability of 2D perovskite thin films is still missing. In this study, we report the effect of number of inorganic layers `n' on elastic modulus of Butylammonium based 2D, quasi-2D perovskites and 3D perovskite using nanoindentation technique. The experimental …
Organohalide perovskite with a variety of surface structures and morphologies have shown promising potential owing to the choice of the type of heterostructure dependent stability. We systematically investigate and discuss the impact of 2-dimensional molybdenum-disulphide (MoS2), molybdenum-diselenide (MoSe2), tungsten-disulphide (WS2), tungsten-diselenide (WSe2), boron- nitiride (BN) and graphene monolayers on band-gap and energy stability of organic-inorganic halide perovskites. We found that MAPbI3ML deposited on BN-ML shows room temperature stability (-25 meV~300K) with an optimal bandgap …
Lead halide perovskites (MAPbX3) are known to have high refractive index and controllable bandgap, making them attractive for all-dielectric and tunable metasurfaces. Till now, perovskite metasurfaces have only been used in structural colors. More interesting meta-devices with 2π phase control are still absent. Here we experimentally demonstrate the MAPbX3 perovskite based metasurfaces with a complete control of phase shift in a reflection mode. By utilizing MAPbBr3 cut-wires as meta-atoms on a ground metal film, we find that the MAPbBr3 perovskite metasurface can produce full phase control fr…

Solution processable materials, such as hybrid perovskites, also present light and flexible features, together with a huge tunability of the material composition with varying optical properties. In this study, we combine paper substrates with halide-mixed perovskites for the creation of low-cost and easy-to-fabricate perovskite-on-paper photodetectors with a broadband-tunable spectral response. Organometallic lead halide perovskites are highly efficient materials for solar cells and other optoelectronic applications due to their high quantum efficiency and exceptional semiconducting properties. A peculiarity of these perovskites is the substantial ionic motion under external forces. Here, we reveal that electric field-and light-induced ionic motion in MAPbX3 crystals (X=Cl, Br, I and MA=CH3NH3) leads to unexpected piezoelectric-like response, an order of magnitude larger than in ferroelectric perovskite oxides. The nominal macroscopic symmetry of the crystals is broken by redistribut…
Antisolvent crystallization methods are frequently used to fabricate high-quality perovskite thin films, to produce sizable single crystals, and to synthesize nanoparticles at room temperature. However, a systematic exploration of the effect of specific antisolvents on the intrinsic stability of multicomponent metal halide perovskites has yet to be demonstrated. Here, we develop a high-throughput experimental workflow that incorporates chemical robotic synthesis, automated characterization, and machine learning techniques to explore how the choice of antisolvent affects the intrinsic stability…
Contrary to the common belief that light-induced halide ion segregation in a mixed halide al-loy occurs within the illuminated area, we find that the Br ions released by light diffuse away from the area, which generates a counter-balancing Coulombic force between the anion deficit and surplus region, together resulting in a macro/mesoscopic size anion ring surrounding the center, showing a photoluminescence ring. Upon removing the illumination, the displaced anions return to the illuminated area, and the restoring force leads to a damped ultra-low-frequency oscillatory ion motion, which may be…
Controlling grain orientations within polycrystalline all-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells can help increase conversion efficiencies toward their thermodynamic limits, however the forces governing texture formation are ambiguous. Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction, we report meso-structure formation within polycrystalline CsPbI2.85Br0.15 powders as they cool from a high-temperature cubic perovskite (α-phase). Tetragonal distortions (\b{eta}-phase) trigger preferential crystallographic alignment within polycrystalline ensembles, a feature we suggest is coordinated across multiple neighb…
Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are currently emerging as one of the most interesting solution processed semiconductors since they possess high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), and colour tunability through anion exchange reactions or quantum confinement. Here, we show efficient solar cells based on mixed halide (CsPbBrI2) NCs obtained via anion exchange reactions in ambient conditions. We performed anion exchange reactions in concentrated NC solutions with I-, thus inducing a PL red-shift up to 676 nm, and obtaining a high PLQY in film (65%). Solar cell devices operating in t…

Perovskite solar cells with record power conversion efficiency are fabricated by alloying both hybrid and fully inorganic compounds. While the basic electronic properties of the hybrid perovskites are now well understood, key electronic parameters for solar cell performance, such as the exciton binding energy of fully inorganic perovskites, are still unknown. By performing magneto transmission measurements, we determine with high accuracy the exciton binding energy and reduced mass of fully inorganic CsPbX$_3$ perovskites (X=I, Br, and an alloy of these). The well behaved (continuous) evolutio…

With superior semiconducting properties, halide perovskite materials are rising as promising candidates for coherent heterostructure devices. In this report, spinodal decomposition is proposed and experimentally implemented to produce epitaxial double heterostructures in halide perovskite system. Pristine epitaxial mixed halide perovskites rods and films were synthesized via Van der Waals epitaxy by chemical vapor deposition method. At room temperature, photon was a…
Instability of hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites hinders their development for photovoltaic applications. First-principle calculations are used for evaluation of a decomposition reaction enthalpy of hybrid halide perovskites, which is linked to experimentally observed degradation of device characteristics. However, simple criteria for predicting stability of halide perovskites are lacking since Goldschmidt's tolerance and octahedral geometrical factors do not fully capture formability of those perovskites. In this paper, we extend the Born-Haber cycle to partition the reaction enthal…
Using density-functional theory calculations, we analyze the optical absorption properties of lead (Pb)-free metal halide perovskites (AB$^{2+}$X$_3$) and double perovskites (AB$^+$B$^{3+}$X$_6$) (A = Cs or monovalent organic ion, B$^{2+}$ = non-Pb divalent metal, B$^+$ = monovalent metal, B$^{3+}$ = trivalent metal, X = halogen). We show that, if B$^{2+}$ is not Sn or Ge, Pb-free metal halide perovskites exhibit poor optical absorptions because of their indirect bandgap nature. Among the nine possible types of Pb-free metal halide double perovskites, six have direct bandgaps. Of these six typ…
The bandgap tunability of mixed-halide perovskites makes them promising candidates for light emitting diodes and tandem solar cells. However, illuminating mixed-halide perovskites results in the formation of segregated phases enriched in a single-halide. This segregation occurs through ion migration, which is also observed in single-halide compositions, and whose control is thus essential to enhance the lifetime and stability. Using pressure-dependent transient absorption spectroscopy, we find that the formation rates of both iodide- and bromide-rich phases in MAPb(BrxI1-x)3 reduce by two orde…
