Spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) are promising candidates for new microwave oscillators with high durability due to a small driving current. However, conventional SHNOs with an in-plane precession (IPP) mode require a bias field for stable oscillations which is not favored in certain applications such as neuromorphic computing. Here, we propose and theoretically analyze a bias-field-free SHNO with an in-plane hard axis and an out-of-plane precession (OPP) mode by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation analytically and numerically. We derive formulas for driving currents and precession frequency, and show that they are in good agreement with numerical simulation results. We show that our proposed SHNOs can be driven by much smaller bias current than conventional spin torque nano-oscillators.
By numerical integration, we study the relaxation dynamics of degenerate harmonic oscillator modes dispersively coupled to particle positions. Depending on whether the effective inertial potential induced by the oscillators keep the particles confined, or if the particle trajectories traverse the system, the local oscillator energy dissipation rate changes drastically. The inertial trapping, release and retrapping of particles results in a characteristic step-wise relaxation process, with alternating regions of fast and slow dissipation. To demonstrate this phenomenon we consider first a one-d…
Coherent Rashba spin precession along interacting multi-mode quantum channels is investigated, revisiting the theory of coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids. We identify susceptibilities as the key-parameters to govern exponents and Rashba precession lengths. In semiconducting quantum wires spins of different transport channels are found to {\em dephase} in their respective precession angles with respect to one another, as a result of the interaction. This could explain the experimental difficulty to realize the Datta Das transistor. In single walled carbon nanotubes, on the other hand, interact…
The Rashba spin-orbit coupling in carbon nanotubes and its effect on spin-dependent transport properties are analyzed theoretically. We focus on clean non-interacting nanotubes with tunable number of subbands $N$. The peculiar band structure is shown to allow in principle for Datta-Das oscillatory behavior in the tunneling magnetoresistance as a function of gate voltage, despite the presence of multiple bands. We discuss the conditions for observing Datta-Das oscillations in carbon nanotubes.
The spin precession in a cylindrical semiconductor nanowire due to Rashba spin-orbit coupling has been investigated theoretically using an InAs nanowire containing a surface two-dimensional electron gas as a model. The eigenstates, energy-momentum dispersion, and the energy-magnetic field dispersion relation are determined by solving the Schrödinger equation in a cylindrical symmetry The combination of states with the same total angular momentum but opposite spin orientation results in a periodic modulation of the axial spin component along the axis of the wire. Spin-precession about the wires…
Spin-transfer torque in asymmetric spin valves can destabilize both parallel and antiparallel configurations and can lead to precessional modes also in the absence of an external magnetic field. We find a bistable precessional regime in such systems and show that thermal fluctuations can excite transitions (telegraph noise) between the corresponding oscillatory regimes that are well separated by irreversible paths at low temperatures. Because of the thermally induced transitions, the frequency of the resulting current-driven oscillations is different from that obtained at very low temperatures…
We investigated the dynamics of a novel design of spin torque oscillator (STO) for microwave assisted magnetic recording. Using Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (NiFe) as the polarizer and Fe$_{67}$Co$_{33}$ (FeCo) as the field generating layer, we experimentally observed the magnetization reversal of NiFe, followed by multiple signals in the power spectra as the bias voltage increased. The signals reflected the out-of-plane precession (OPP) mode oscillation of both FeCo and NiFe, as well as the magnetoresistance effect of the STO device, which had the frequency equal to the difference between the oscillati…
A mechanism of current-induced magnetization reversal based on the parametric resonance is described. The source of the magnetization reversal is a current-induced magnetic field, which is applied perpendicularly to the easy axis of magnetic anisotropy of a ferromagnetic nanomagnet. The current-induced magnetic field was measured in a FeCoB nanomagnet to be 60 Gauss at a current density of 65 mA/um2. Two mechanisms of the magnetization reversal are described and calculated. The first mechanism is the reversal by a RF electrical current, which modulated at a frequency close to the precession fr…
Magneto-elastic (or "straintronic") switching has emerged as an extremely energy-efficient mechanism for switching the magnetization of magnetostrictive nanomagnets in magnetic memory, logic and non-Boolean circuits. Here, we investigate the ultrafast magneto-dynamics associated with straintronic switching in a single quasi-elliptical magnetostrictive Co nanomagnet deposited on a piezoelectric PMN-PT substrate using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) measurements. The pulsed laser pump beam in the TR-MOKE plays a dual role: it causes precession of the nanomagnet's magnetizatio…
We demonstrate (using full-scale micromagnetic simulations) that the spin injection driven steady-state precession of a thin magnetic nanoelement exhibit a complicate transition from the quasi-macrospin to the chaotic behaviour with the increasing element size. For nanoelement parameters typical for those used experimentally we have found that the macrospin approximation becomes invalid already for very small nanoelement sizes (~ 30 nm), in contrast to the previously reported results (Li and Zhang, Phys. Rev. B, vol. B68, 024404-1 (2003))
We demonstrate how magnetic droplet soliton pairs, nucleated by two separated nano-contact (NC) spin torque oscillators, can merge into a single droplet soliton. A detailed description of the magnetization dynamics of this merger process is obtained by micromagnetic simulations: A droplet pair with a steady-state in-phase spin precession is generated through the spin-transfer torque effect underneath two separate NCs, followed by a gradual expansion of the droplets volume and the out phase of magnetization on the inner side of the two droplets, resulting in the droplets merging into a larger d…
The magnetic analogue of the Josephson effect can be exploited to develop a new class of nano-spin oscillators that we denote as spin superfluid Josephson oscillators. Such a device, consisting of two exchange coupled easy-plane metallic ferromagnets separated by a thin normal metal spacer, is proposed and analyzed. A spin chemical potential difference drives a $2π$ precession of the in-plane magnetization of each ferromagnet. The $2 π$ precession angle gives maximum values of the giant magnetoresistance, resulting in large output power compared to conventional spin Hall oscillators. An applie…
Carrier spins in semiconductor nanocrystals are promising candidates for quantum information processing. Using a combination of time-resolved Faraday rotation and photoluminescence spectroscopies, we demonstrate optical spin polarization and coherent spin precession in colloidal CsPbBr3 nanocrystals that persists up to room temperature. By suppressing the influence of inhomogeneous hyperfine fields with a small applied magnetic field, we demonstrate inhomogeneous hole transverse spin-dephasing times (T2*) that approach the nanocrystal photoluminescence lifetime, such that nearly all emitted ph…
Frequency of free magnetic vortex precession in circular soft ferromagnetic nano-cylinders (magnetic dots) of various sizes is an important parameter, used in design of spintronic devices (such as spin-torque microwave nano-oscillators) and characterization of magnetic nanostructures. Here, using a recently developed collective-variable approach to non-linear dynamics of magnetic textures in planar nano-magnets, this frequency and its amplitude-dependent shift are computed analytically and plotted for the full range of cylinder geometries. The frequency shift is positive in large planar dots, …
We present numerical calculations of the ballistic spin-transport properties of quasi-one-dimensional wires in the presence of the spin-orbit (Rashba) interaction. A tight-binding analog of the Rashba Hamiltonian which models the Rashba effect is used. By varying the robustness of the Rashba coupling and the width of the wire, weak and strong coupling regimes are identified. Perfect electron spin-modulation is found for the former regime, regardless of the incident Fermi energy and mode number. In the latter however, the spin-conductance has a strong energy dependence due to a nontrivial subba…
We demonstrate a variety of precessional responses of the magnetization to ultrafast optical excitation in nanolayers of Galfenol (Fe,Ga), which is a ferromagnetic material with large saturation magnetization and enhanced magnetostriction. The particular properties of Galfenol, including cubic magnetic anisotropy and weak damping, allow us to detect up to 6 magnon modes in a 120-nm layer, and a single mode with effective damping $α_{eff}$ = 0.005 and frequency up to 100 GHz in a 4-nm layer. This is the highest frequency observed to date in time-resolved experiments with metallic ferromagnets. …
Spin Hall effects have surged as promising phenomena for spin logics operations without ferromagnets. However, the magnitude of the detected electric signals at room temperature in metallic systems has been so far underwhelming. Here, we demonstrate a two-order of magnitude enhancement of the signal in monolayer graphene/Pt devices when compared to their fully metallic counterparts. The enhancement stems in part from efficient spin injection and the large resistivity of graphene but we also observe 100% spin absorption in Pt and find an unusually large effective spin Hall angle of up to 0.15. …
A theory of magnetization dynamics in ferrimagnetic materials with antiparallel aligned spin sub-lattices under action of spin-transfer torques (STT) is developed. We consider magnetization dynamics in GdFeCo layers in two cases of magnetic anisotropy: easy plane and easy axis. We demonstrate that, (i) for the easy plane anisotropy the precession of the Néel vector is conical and the cone angle depends on the STT strength and the value of spin non-compensation, while the frequency of precession can reach sub-THz frequencies; (ii) for the easy axis anisotropy two regimes are possible: determini…
Time-resolved Faraday rotation is used to measure the coherent electron spin precession in a GaAs/InGaAs quantum well below an interdigitated magnetized Fe grating. We show that the electron spin precession frequency can be modified by applying a gate voltage of opposite polarity to neighboring bars. A tunability of the precession frequency of 0.5 GHz/V has been observed. Modulating the gate potential with a gigahertz frequency allows the electron spin precession to be controlled on a nanosecond timescale.
A set of equations describing the motion of a free magnetic nanoparticle in an external magnetic field in a vacuum, or in a medium with negligibly small friction forces is postulated. The conservation of the total particle momentum, i.e. the sum of the mechanical and the total spin momentum of the nanoparticle is taken into account explicitly. It is shown that for the motion of a nanoparticle in uniform magnetic field there are three different modes of precession of the unit magnetization vector and the director that is parallel the particle easy anisotropy axis. These modes differ significant…
We study generation of acoustic waves by a precessing spin of a nanoparticle deposited on the surface of a solid. Our approach elucidates macroscopic dynamics of the Einstein - de Haas effect. It is based upon solution of parameter-free equations of motion mandated by the conservation of the total angular momentum: spin + mechanical. We show that the amplitude of the acoustic waves generated by the spin precession may be sufficient for detection by a tunneling electron microscope.
Electronic spin precession and filtering are measured in the molecular field of magnetic thin films. The conducted lab-on-chip experiments allow injection of electrons with energies between 0.8 and 1.1 eV, an energy range never explored up to now in spin precession experiments. While filtering angles agree with previous reported values measured at much higher electron energies, spin precession angles of 2.5° in CoFe and 0.7° in Co per nanometer film thickness could be measured which are 30 times smaller than those previously measured at 7 eV. Band structure effects and layer roughness are resp…
The numerous phenomenological equations used in the study of the behaviour of single-domain magnetic nanoparticles are described and some issues clarified by means of qualitative comparison. To enable a quantitative \textit{application} of the model based on the Debye (exponential) relaxation and the torque driving the Larmor precession, we present analytical solutions for the steady states in presence of circularly and linearly polarized AC magnetic fields. Using the exact analytical solutions, we can confirm the insight that underlies Rosensweig's introduction of the "chord" susceptibility f…
We experimentally study spin-Hall nano-oscillators based on [Co/Ni] multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We show that these devices are capable of single-frequency auto-oscillations at current densities comparable to those in the in-plane magnetized oscillators. The demonstrated oscillators exhibit large magnetization precession amplitudes, and their oscillation frequency is highly tunable by the electric current. These features make them promising for applications in high-speed integrated microwave circuits.
We investigate spin-polarized electron tunnelling through ensembles of nanometer scale Al grains embedded between two Co-reservoirs at 4.2K, and observe tunnelling-magnetoresistance (TMR) and effects from spin-precession in the perpendicular applied magnetic field (the Hanle effect). The spin-coherence time ($T_2^\star$) measured using the Hanle effect is of order $ns$. The dephasing is attributed to electron spin-precession in local magnetic fields. Dephasing process does not destroy $TMR$, which is strongly asymmetric with bias voltage. The asymmetric TMR is explained by spin relaxation in A…
In this paper a detailed numerical study (in frames of the Slonczewski formalism) of magnetization oscillations driven by a spin-polarized current through a thin elliptical nanoelement is presented. We show that a sophisticated micromagnetic model, where a polycrystalline structure of a nanoelement is taken into account, can explain qualitatively all most important features of the magnetization oscillation spectra recently observed experimentally (S.I. Kiselev et al., Nature, vol. 425, p. 380 (2003), namely: existence of several equidistant spectral bands, sharp onset and abrupt disappearance …
Skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillators are potential next-generation microwave signal generators. However, ferromagnetic skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillators cannot reach high oscillation frequencies. In this work, we propose to use the circular motion of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion to create the oscillation signal in order to overcome this obstacle. Micromagnetic simulations demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillators can produce high frequencies (tens of GHz). Furthermore, the speed of the circular motion for an antiferromagnetic skyrmion …
We present a theoretical study of current noise of a resonant tunnel junction coupled to a nanomechanical oscillator within the non-equilibrium Green's function technique. An arbitrary voltage is applied to the tunnel junction and electrons in the leads are considered to be at zero temperature. The properties of the phonon distribution of the nanomechanical oscillator strongly coupled to the electrons on the dot are investigated using a non-perturbative approach. An analytical calculations and numerical results for the current-voltage, shot noise and the corresponding Fano factor as a function…
Based on theoretical models, the dynamics of spin-torque nano-oscillators can be substantially modified by re-injecting the emitted signal to the input of the oscillator after some delay. Numerical simulations for vortex magnetic tunnel junctions show that with reasonable parameters this approach can decrease critical currents as much as 25 % and linewidths by a factor of 4. Analytical calculations, which agree well with simulations, demonstrate that these results can be generalized to any kind of spin-torque oscillator.
A nanomechanical resonator coupled to a tunnel junction is studied. The oscillator modulates the transmission of the junction, changing the current and the noise spectrum. The influence of the oscillator on the noise spectrum of the junction is investigated, and the noise spectrum is obtained for arbitrary frequencies, temperatures and bias voltages. We find that the noise spectrum consists of a noise floor and a peaked structure with peaks at zero frequency, the oscillator frequency and twice the oscillator frequency. The influence of the oscillator vanishes if the bias voltage of the junctio…
Phase coupling between auto-oscillators is central for achieving coherent responses such as synchronization. Here we present an experimental approach to probe it in the case of two dipolarly coupled spin-torque vortex nano-oscillators using an external microwave field. By phase-locking one oscillator to the microwave field, we observe frequency pulling on the second oscillator. From coupled Thiele equations we show analytically that this frequency pulling results from concerted actions of dipolar and microwave couplings. The analysis allows us to determine the amplitude of dipolar coupling and…
In this paper, we propose to control the strength of phase-locking between two dipolarly coupled vortex based spin-torque nano-oscillators by placing an intermediate oscillator between them. We show through micromagnetic simulations that the strength of phase-locking can be largely tuned by a slight variation of current in the intermediate oscillator. We develop simplified numerical simulations based on analytical expressions of the vortex core trajectories that will be useful for investigating large arrays of densely packed spin-torque oscillators interacting through their stray fields.
Manipulating operation states of coupled spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs), including their synchronization, is essential for applications such as complex oscillator networks. In this work we experimentally demonstrate selective control of two coupled vortex STNOs through microwave-assisted switching of their vortex core polarities. First, the two oscillators are shown to synchronize due to dipolar interaction in a broad frequency range tuned by external biasing field. Coherent output is demonstrated along with strong linewidth reduction. Then, we show individual vortex polarity control of …
We study the magnetization dynamics of spin valve structures with a free composite synthetic ferromagnet (SyF) that consists of two ferromagnetic layers coupled through a normal metal spacer. A ferromagnetically coupled SyF can be excited into dynamical precessional states by an applied current without external magnetic fields. We analytically determine the stability of these states in the space spanned by the current density and SyF interlayer exchange coupling. Numerical simulations confirm our analytical results.
We present a combined analytical and numerical study on double-vortex spin-torque nano-oscillators and describe a mechanism that suppresses the windmill modes. The magnetization dynamics is dominated by the gyrotropic precession of the vortex in one of the ferromagnetic layers. In the other layer the vortex gyration is strongly damped. The dominating layer for the magnetization dynamics is determined by the current polarity. Measurements on Fe/Ag/Fe nano-pillars support these findings. The results open up a new perspective for building high quality-factor spin-torque oscillators operating at s…
Effects of a microwave voltage on magnetization precession are analyzed based on a macrospin model. The microwave voltage induces the oscillating anisotropy field through the voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) effect, and then stimulates the magnetization. The large angle precession is maintained if the magnetization synchronizes with the microwave voltage. The effective equations of motion of the magnetization with an oscillating anisotropy field are derived, and the mechanism of the synchronization is clarified by analyzing the derived equations of motion. The conditions of the an…
Using micromagnetic simulation, we investigate the self-sustained oscillation of magnetic skyrmion in a ferromagnetic circular nanodot, driven by spin-torque which is generated from a reference layer of a circular nanopillar device. We demonstrate, by lowering the value of uniaxial anisotropy constant ($K_u$), the velocity of the skyrmion can be increased and using this property, gyration frequency of the skyrmion oscillator can be enhanced. Annihilation of the skyrmion at higher current densities, limit the gyration frequency of the oscillator, whereas by modifying the $K_u$ value at the edge…
This paper reviews the state of the art in spin-torque and spin Hall effect driven nano-oscillators. After a brief introduction to the underlying physics, the authors discuss different implementations of these oscillators, their functional properties in terms of frequency range, output power, phase noise, and modulation rates, and their inherent propensity for mutual synchronization. Finally, the potential for these oscillators in a wide range of applications, from microwave signal sources and detectors to neuromorphic computation elements, is discussed together with the specific electronic ci…
Due to their nonlinear properties, spin transfer nano-oscillators can easily adapt their frequency to external stimuli. This makes them interesting model systems to study the effects of synchronization and brings some opportunities to improve their microwave characteristics in view of their applications in information and communication technologies and to design innovative computing architectures. So far, mutual synchronization of spin transfer nano-oscillators through propagating spin-waves and exchange coupling in a common magnetic layer has been demonstrated. Here we show that the dipolar i…
The use of spin transfer nano-oscillators (STNOs) to generate microwave signal in nanoscale devices have aroused tremendous and continuous research interest in recent years. Their key features are frequency tunability, nanoscale size, broad working temperature, and easy integration with standard silicon technology. In this feature article, we give an overview of recent developments and breakthroughs in the materials, geometry design and properties of STNOs. We focus in more depth on our latest advances in STNOs with perpendicular anisotropy showing a way to improve the output power of STNO tow…
We consider T-invariant spin currents induced by spin-orbit interactions which originate from the confined motion of spin carriers in nanostructures. The resulting Thomas spin precession is a fundamental and purely kinematic relativistic effect occurring when the acceleration of carriers is not parallel to their velocity. In the case, where the carriers (e.g. electrons) have magnetic moment the forces due to the electric field of the spin current can, in certain conditions, exceed the van der Waals-Casimir forces by several orders of magnitude. We also discuss a possible experimental set-up ta…
Spin torque from spin current applied to a nanoscale region of a ferromagnet can act as negative magnetic damping and thereby excite self-oscillations of its magnetization. In contrast, spin torque uniformly applied to the magnetization of an extended ferromagnetic film does not generate self-oscillatory magnetic dynamics but leads to reduction of the saturation magnetization. Here we report studies of the effect of spin torque on a system of intermediate dimensionality - a ferromagnetic nanowire. We observe coherent self-oscillations of magnetization in a ferromagnetic nanowire serving as the…
A recent experiment reports a non-local spin-signal that shows oscillatory behavior as a function of gate voltage when the contacts are magnetized along the direction of current flow, but not when they are magnetized perpendicular to the current, in agreement with the predictions from a simple theory. In this paper we first present a straightforward extension of this theory to include the angular spectrum of electrons and the extended injecting and detecting contacts. The results are in good agreement with those from a non-equilibrium Green function (NEGF)- based model with contact parameters …
The development of spintronic oscillators is driven by their potential applications in radio frequency telecommunication and neuromorphic computing. In this work, we propose a spintronic oscillator based on the chiral coupling in thin magnetic films with patterned anisotropy. With an in-plane magnetized disk imprinted on an out-of-plane magnetized slab, the oscillator takes a polar vortex-like magnetic structure in the disk stabilized by a strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. By means of micromagnetic simulations, we investigate its oscillatory properties under applied spin current and, b…
We study the magnetization dynamics of thin-film magnetic elements with in-plane magnetization subject to a spin-current flowing perpendicular to the film plane. We derive a reduced partial differential equation for the in-plane magnetization angle in a weakly damped regime. We then apply this model to study the experimentally relevant problem of switching of an elliptical element when the spin-polarization has a component perpendicular to the film plane, restricting the reduced model to a macrospin approximation. The macrospin ordinary differential equation is treated analytically as a weakly…
Oscillation frequency of spin torque oscillator with a perpendicularly magnetized free layer and an in-plane magnetized pinned layer is theoretically investigated by taking into account the field-like torque. It is shown that the field-like torque plays an important role in finding the balance between the energy supplied by the spin torque and the dissipation due to the damping, which results in a steady precession. The validity of the developed theory is confirmed by performing numerical simulations based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.
We investigate the charge and spin transport of a voltage-biased superconducting point contact coupled to a nanomagnet. The magnetization of the nanomagnet is assumed to precess with the Larmor frequency, $ω_L$, due to ferromagnetic resonance. The interplay between the ac Josephson current and the magnetization dynamics leads to spin-polarized Shapiro steps at voltages $|V|=\hbar ω_L/2en$ for $n=1,2,...$ and the subharmonic steps with $n>1$ are a consequence of multiple Andreev reflection (MAR). Moreover, the spin-precession-assisted MAR generates quasiparticle scattering amplitudes that, due …
Two-mode model of spin-torque nano-oscillator (STNO) under the action of thermal noise is considered. Langevin equations for mode amplitudes were derived starting from general nonlinear oscillator model. Stationary probability distribution function describing mean mode generation powers was obtained using Fokker-Planck equation. It was shown that thermal noise can lead to two-mode generation in STNO. An increase of thermal noise power leads to excitation of the second mode in a system and to a two-mode generation regime through intermediate state when two modes coexist only in some range of th…
This Habilitation Thesis written in 2013 reviews my research work on spin torque nano-oscillators (from zero-field oscillations, to synchronization and vortex oscillators) and memristive devices (spin Torque and ferroelectric memristors).
The spins, which are accumulated at a boundary of a nanomagnet due to the Spin Hall effect, induce a magnetic field, which tilts the nanomagnet magnetization out of its easy axis. Even though this magnetic field is relatively small (about 20 Gauss), it can reverse the magnetization of the nanomagnet if it is modulated in resonance with the magnetization precession and the conditions of the parametric resonance are met. Therefore, such magnetic field can be used to optimize the recording mechanism and to minimize the recording energy for MRAM. A high-precession measurement method of the spin-ac…
We demonstrate a viable approach to fabricating ultrafast axial nano-oscillators based on carbon nanoscrolls (CNSs) using molecular dynamics simulations. Initiated by a single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT), a monolayer graphene can continuously scroll into a CNS with the CNT housed inside. The CNT inside the CNS can oscillate along axial direction at a natural frequency of 10s gigahertz (GHz). We demonstrate an effective strategy to reduce the dissipation of the CNS-based nano-oscillator by covalently bridging the carbon layers in the CNS. We further demonstrate that, such a CNS-based nano-osci…
We report on the coherent control and transport of indirect exciton (IX) spins in GaAs double quantum well (DQW) nanostructures. The spin dynamics was investigated by optically generating spins using a focused, circularly polarized light spot and by probing their spatial distribution using spatially and polarization resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Optically injected exciton spins precess while diffusing over distances exceeding 20 μm from the excitation spot with a spatial precession frequency that depends on the spin transport direction as well as on the bias applied across the DQW s…
The supercurrent of a quantum point contact coupled to a nanomagnet strongly depends on the dynamics of the nanomagnet's spin. We employ a fully microscopic model to calculate the transport properties of a junction coupled to a spin whose dynamics is modeled as Larmor precession brought about by an external magnetic field and find that the dynamics affects the charge and spin currents by inducing transitions between the continuum states below the superconducting gap edge and the Andreev levels. This redistribution of the quasiparticles leads to a non-equilibrium population of the Andreev level…

A numerical investigation is conducted for a single spin-torque oscillator under the non-linear region. A large angle precession triggers the generation of multiple modes without any feedbacked circuits and/or magnetic couplings with neighboring oscillators. Our simulations show that a single eigenmode of a given spin-torque oscillator can trigger up to six discrete modes as the sideband modes. These findings will offer the new functionality to the STO for developing the spintronic logic circuits.
Spin-based coherent information processing and encoding utilize the precession phase of spins in magnetic materials. However, the detection and manipulation of spin precession phases remain a major challenge for advanced spintronic functionalities. By using simultaneous electrical and optical detection, we demonstrate the direct measurement of the precession phase of Permalloy ferromagnetic resonance driven by the spin-orbit torques from adjacent heavy metals. The spin Hall angle of the heavy metals can be independently determined from concurrent electrical and optical signals. The stroboscopi…
In this comment, we agree with the formulas derived in Refs. [1,2] but show that the results are not due to "interference between spatially separated states of the center of mass of a mesoscopic harmonic oscillator".
