Low-Ionisation Nuclear Emission-line Regions (LINERs) are the least luminous and the most numerous among the local population of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). They can be classified as type-1 or type-2 if their optical spectra show or do not show, respectively, a broad component. It is associated with the presence of a Broad Line Region (BLR) in these systems. However, recent studies have proven that the classification of type-1 LINERs may be controversial, since space- and ground-based spectroscopy provide contradicting results on the presence of very broad components (Cazzoli et al. 2018). We have studied the nuclear spectra of 9 type-2 LINERs with intermediate spectral resolution HST/STIS data. We present the results on our analysis of the different spectral components, and discuss the eventual presence of BLR components in type-2 LINER galaxies, together with the possible presence of outflows, both in comparison with type-1 LINERs. We have found a BLR component in 7 out of the 9 analysed objects within the HST/STIS data.
The Balmer emission originated in the broad line region (BLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) could be either weak and difficult to detect, or even absent, for low luminosity AGNs, as LINERs. Our goals in this paper are threefold. First, we want to explore the AGN-nature of nearby type-1 LINERs. Second, we aim at deriving a reliable interpretation for the different components of emission lines by studying their kinematics and ionization mechanism. Third, we intend to probe the neutral gas in the nuclei of these LINERs. We study the 22 local (z<0.025) type-1 LINERs from the Palomar Survey, on …
We present the highlights from our recent study of 22 local (z$<$0.025) type-1 LINERs from the Palomar Survey, on the basis of optical long-slit spectroscopic observations taken with TWIN/CAHA, ALFOSC/NOT and HST/STIS (Cazzoli et al. 2018). Our goals were threefold: (a) explore the AGN- nature of these LINERs by studying the broad (BLR-originated) H$α$ component; (b) derive a reliable interpretation for the multiple narrow components of emission lines by studying their kinematics and ionisation mechanism (via standard BPTs); (c) probe the neutral gas in the nuclei of these LINERs for the first…
Type-2 Low-ionization Narrow Emission-line Regions (LINERs) have been optically classified with the Palomar data as not presenting a broad component in the Balmer emission lines associated to the Broad Line Region (BLR) of the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We unveil the presence of different kinematic components of emission lines in the nuclear region of a sample of local (z$\leq$0.022) type-2 LINERs. We focus on the analysis of their true nature by means of the detection (or not) of a broad component originated in the BLR. Additionally, we search for the possible presence of non-rotational mo…
This paper compares the optical spectra of a wide range of galaxies categorised as members of the Low Ionisation Nuclear Emission Region (LINER) class of active galactic nuclei (AGN). LINERs are defined by emission spectra with relatively faint high ionisation lines (compared to other AGN classes). The gas emission luminosity ranges from the weak flux emanating from some nearby galactic nuclei all the way to extremely luminous radio galaxies, where the line emission can completely dominate the host galaxy starlight component. In this study I analyse the Sloane Digital Sky Survey optical spectr…
We investigated the 65$μ$m, 71$μ$m, 79$μ$m, 84$μ$m, 119$μ$m, and 163$μ$m OH doublets of 178 local (0 < $z$ < 0.35) galaxies. They were observed using the $Herschel$/PACS spectrometer, including Seyfert galaxies, LINERs, and star-forming galaxies. We observe these doublets exclusively in absorption (OH71), primarily in absorption (OH65, OH84), mostly in emission (OH79), only in emission (OH163) and an approximately even mix of the both (OH119). In 19 galaxies we find P-Cygni or reverse P-Cygni line profiles in the OH doublets. We use several galaxy observables to probe spectral classification, …
We present Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) integral field spectroscopy and HST FOS spectroscopy for the LINER galaxy NGC 1052. We infer the presence of a turbulent accretion flow forming a small-scale accretion disk. We find a large-scale outflow and ionisation cone along the minor axis of the galaxy. Part of this outflow region is photoionised by the AGN, and shares properties with the ENLR of Seyfert galaxies, but the inner ($R \lesssim 1.0$~arcsec) accretion disk and the region around the radio jet appear shock excited. The emission line properties can be modelled by a "double shock" model …
Most of the optically classified low ionisation narrow emission-line regions (LINERs) nuclei host an active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, how they fit into the unified model (UM) of AGN is still an open question. The aims of this work are to study at mid-infrared (mid-IR) (1) the Compton-thick nature of LINERs; and (2) the disappearance of the dusty torus in LINERs predicted from theoretical arguments. We have compiled all the available low spectral resolution mid-IR spectra of LINERs from the IRS/Spitzer (40 LINERs). We have complemented this sample with Spitzer/IRS spectra of PGQSOs, S1s, …
In this paper we study the nuclear obscuration of galaxies hosting LINERs based on their X-ray and optical emission. They show column densities (N_H) at soft energies (0.5-2 keV) mostly related to the diffuse emission around the AGN, showing a correlation with the optical extinction. N_H at hard energies (2-10 keV) seem to be much higher than what would be expected from the optical extinction. They might be associated to the inner regions of the AGN, buried at optical wavelengths. The main result of this paper is that around 50% of our LINER sample shows signatures of Compton-thickness (CT) ac…
We explored a sample of 545 local galaxies using data from the 3XMM-DR7 and SDSS-DR8 surveys. We carried out all analyses up to z\,$\sim$\,0.2, and we studied the relation between X/O flux ratio and accretion rate for different classes of active galaxies such as LINERs and Seyfert 2. We obtained a slight correlation between the two parameters if the whole sample of AGN is used. However, LINERs and Sy2 galaxies show different properties, slight correlation and slight anti-correlation, respectively. This could confirm that LINERs and Sy2 galaxies have different accretion efficiencies and maybe d…
Many Early-type galaxies (ETG) have ionized gas emission in their centres that extends to scales of ~ 1kpc. The majority of such objects are classified as LINERs, but the nature of their ionizing source is still not clear. The kinematics associated with these gaseous structures usually shows deviations from a pure rotational motion due to non-gravitational effects or to non-axisymmetric potentials. This is the third of a series of papers that describes a sample of 10 nearby and massive ETG observed with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph in Integral Field mode installed on the Gemini-South t…
Outflows play a major role in the evolution of galaxies. However, we do not have yet a complete picture of their properties (extension, geometry, orientation and clumpiness). For low-luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), in particular, low-ionisation nuclear emission line regions (LINERs), the rate of outflows and their properties are largely unknown. The main goal of this work is to create the largest, up-to-date atlas of ionised gas outflow candidates in a sample of 70 nearby LINERs. We use narrow-band, imaging data to analyse the morphological properties of the ionised gas nuclear emiss…
We present high spatial resolution, integral field spectrograph (IFS) observations of the nearby LINER (low ionization nuclear emission line region) galaxy NGC 404 at 1.25 $μ$m (J band) and 2.2 $μ$m (K band) near-infrared wavelengths. Although NGC 404 is thought to host an intermediate mass black hole at its center, it has been unclear whether accretion onto the black hole or another mechanism such as shock excitation drives its LINER emission at optical/near-infrared wavelengths. We use the OSIRIS IFS at Keck Observatory behind laser guide star adaptive optics to map the strength and kinemati…

Passive red galaxies frequently contain warm ionized gas and have spectra similar to low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs). Here we investigate the nature of the ionizing sources powering this emission, by comparing nuclear spectroscopy from the Palomar survey with larger aperture data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find the line emission in the majority of passive red galaxies is spatially extended; the Halpha surface brightness profile depends on radius (r) as r^(-1.28). We detect strong line ratio gradients with radius in [N II]/Ha, [S II]/Ha, and [O III]/[S II], requ…
In the first paper of this series (Rhea et al. 2020), we demonstrated that neural networks can robustly and efficiently estimate kinematic parameters for optical emission-line spectra taken by SITELLE at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. This paper expands upon this notion by developing an artificial neural network to estimate the line ratios of strong emission-lines present in the SN1, SN2, and SN3 filters of SITELLE. We construct a set of 50,000 synthetic spectra using line ratios taken from the Mexican Million Model database replicating Hii regions. Residual analysis of the network on the…
We report the discovery of six active galactic nuclei (AGN) caught "turning on" during the first nine months of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey. The host galaxies were classified as LINERs by weak narrow forbidden line emission in their archival SDSS spectra, and detected by ZTF as nuclear transients. In five of the cases, we found via follow-up spectroscopy that they had transformed into broad-line AGN, reminiscent of the changing-look LINER iPTF 16bco. In one case, ZTF18aajupnt/AT2018dyk, follow-up HST UV and ground-based optical spectra revealed the transformation into a narrow-l…
We present a spectroscopic analysis of the central disc regions of barred spiral galaxies, concentrating on the region that is swept by the bar but not including the bar itself (the `Star Formation Desert' or SFD region). New spectroscopy is presented for 34 galaxies, and the full sample analysed comprises 48 SBa - SBcd galaxies. These data confirm the full suppression of star formation within the SFD regions of all but the latest type (SBcd) galaxies. However, diffuse [NII] and H alpha line emission is detected in all galaxies. The ubiquity and homogeneous properties of this emission from SBa…
We study the X-ray properties of LINER sources with definite detection of a broad H(alpha) emission line in their optical spectra, LINER 1s from Ho et al. sample. These objects preferentially harbor a low luminosity active nucleus at the center and show small or no intrinsic absorption (<10^(22) cm^(-1)). We analyzed all available X-ray archived XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of 13 LINER 1s satisfying the above criterion in a systematic homogeneous way. We looked for any correlations between the X-ray properties and the intrinsic parameters of our sample of LINER 1s. An absorbed power-law…

Chemical abundance determinations in Low-Ionization Nuclear Line Regions (LINERs) are especially complex and uncertain because the nature of the ionizing source of this kind of object is unknown. In this work, we study the oxygen abundance in relation to the hydrogen abundance (O/H) of the gas phase of the UGC4805 LINER nucleus. Optical spectroscopic data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies (MaNGA) survey was employed to derive the O/H abundance of the UGC4805 nucleus based on the extrapolation of the disk abundance gradient, on calibrations between O/H abundance and strong emission-lines for Act…

Integral field spectroscopy studies based on CALIFA data have recently revealed the presence of ongoing low-level star formation (SF) in the periphery of ~10% of local early-type galaxies (ETGs), witnessing a still ongoing inside-out galaxy growth process. A distinctive property of the nebular component in these ETGs, classified i+, is a two-radial-zone structure, with the inner zone displaying LINER emission with a Hαequivalent width EW~1Å, and the outer one (3Å<EW<~20Å) showing HII-region characteristics. Using CALIFA IFS data, we empirically demonstrate that the confinement of nebular emiss…
We report the discovery of a 20-kpc-sized Hα emission in SDSS J083803.68+540642.0, a ringed dwarf galaxy (M$_V$ = -17.89 mag) hosting an accreting intermediate-mass black hole at z=0.02957. Analysis of the HST images indicates that it is an early-type galaxy with a featureless low-surface brightness disk (μ0 = 20.39 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in the V band) and a prominent, relatively red bulge (V - I = 2.03, Re = 0.28 kpc or 0."48) that accounts for ~81% of the total light in the I band. A circumgalactic ring of a diameter 16 kpc is also detected, with a disperse shape on its south side. The optical e…
We conducted systematic observations of the HI Br-alpha line (4.05 micron) and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) feature (3.3 micron) in 50 nearby (z<0.3) ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with AKARI. The Br-alpha line is predicted to be the brightest among the HI lines under high dust-extinction conditions (A_V>15 mag). The Br-alpha line traces ionizing photons from OB stars and so is used as an indicator of star formation on the assumption of the initial mass function. We detected the Br-alpha line in 33 ULIRGs. The luminosity of the line (L_BrA) correlates well with that of t…
We analyze the properties of the innermost narrow line region in a sample of low-luminosity AGN. We select 33 LINERs (bona fide AGN) and Seyfert galaxies from the optical spectroscopic Palomar survey observed by HST/STIS. We find that in LINERs the [NII] and [OI] lines are broader than the [SII] line and that the [NII]/[SII] flux ratio increases when moving from ground-based to HST spectra. This effect is more pronounced considering the wings of the lines. Our interpretation is that, as a result of superior HST spatial resolution, we isolate a compact region of dense ionized gas in LINERs, loc…
Using a new color-color diagnostic diagram in the mid infrared built from WISE data, the MIRDD, we compare narrow emission-line galaxies (NELGs) that exhibit different activity types (star-forming galaxies, SFGs, and AGNs, i.e.,LINERs, Sy2s and TOs), with broad-line AGNs (QSOs and Sy1s) and BL Lac objects at low redshift ($z \le 0.25$). We show that the BL Lac objects occupy in the MIRDD the same region as the LINERs, whereas the QSOs and Sy1s occupy an intermediate region, between the LINERs and the Sy2s.In the MIRDD these galaxies trace a sequence that can be reproduced by a power law, $F_ν=…
This work presents the first results of the Deep IFS View of Nuclei of Galaxies (DIVING$^\mathrm{3D}$) survey. We analysed the nuclear emission-line spectra of a sub-sample we call mini-DIVING$^\mathrm{3D}$, which includes all Southern galaxies with B < 11.2 and |b| > 15 degrees. We verified that $23\% \pm 4\%$ of the galaxies show nuclear emission-line properties characteristic of Low Ionization Nuclear Emission-Line Regions (LINERs). Diagnostic diagram analysis reveals an apparent dichotomy, not detected in previous studies, between objects classified as H II regions and as LINERs or Seyfert…
(Abridged) We attempt to infer the accretion mechanism and radiative processes giving rise to the SEDs of a well-defined optically-selected sample of LINERs showing a definite detection of broad Halpha emission (LINER 1s). We construct SEDs for six LINER~1s with simultaneous UV and X-ray fluxes, and we looked for multiwavelength, radio to X-ray and UV to X-ray, correlations. At a given X-ray luminosity, the average SED of the six LINER 1s in our sample: (1) resembles the SED of radio-loud quasars in the radio band, <log R_X>~-2.7, (2) exhibits a weak UV bump, <alpha_ox>~-1.17+-0.02 with a disp…
NGC 5850 is a nearby (z=0.0085) early type spiral galaxy classified as LINER. It is considered as a prototype double-barred system. Our optical Integral Field Spectroscopic (IFS) data of the central 21x19 arcsec^2 of NGC 5850 show extended LINER-like emission which we ascribe to the presence of a hot and evolved stellar population, possibly together with a faint AGN. Additionally NGC 5850 shows extended `composite' ionization patterns, likely to stem from a mixture of LINER-like ionization and photoionization by star formation. The kinematics of the gas deviates strongly from a simple rotation…
We present an analysis of the optical line emission from nearby barred galaxies, and in particular look at the radial range occupied by the bar. In many cases this region is marked by what we term a 'star formation desert', with a marked deficit of HII regions in optical narrow-band H-alpha imaging. Here we present long-slit spectroscopy revealing that such regions do have line emission, but that it is low-level, spatially smooth and almost ubiquitous. The relative strengths of the H-alpha and the spectrally adjacent [NII] lines in the regions are completely discrepant from those associated wi…
MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) is a SDSS-IV survey that will obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy from 3600 Å to 10300 Å for a representative sample of over 10000 nearby galaxies. In this paper we present the analysis of nebular emission line properties in 14 galaxies obtained with P-MaNGA, a prototype of the MaNGA instrument. Using spatially resolved diagnostic diagrams we find extended star formation in galaxies that are centrally dominated by Seyfert/LINER-like emission, which illustrates that galaxy characterisations based on single fibre spectra are necessar…
The jet production efficiency of radio galaxies can be quantified by comparison of their kinetic jet powers P_jet and Bondi accretion powers P_B. These two parameters are known to be related linearly, with the jet power resulting from the Bondi power by multiplication with an efficiency factor of order 1%. Using a recently published (Nemmen + Tchekhovskoy 2014) high-quality sample of 27 radio galaxies, I construct a P_B-P_jet diagram that includes information on optical AGN types as far as available. This diagram indicates that the jet production efficiency is a function of AGN type: Seyfert 2…
We present observations of the molecular gas in the nuclear environment of three prototypical low luminosity AGN (LLAGN), based on VLT/SINFONI AO-assisted integral-field spectroscopy of H2 1-0 S(1) emission at angular resolutions of ~0.17". On scales of 50-150 pc the spatial distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas are consistent with a rotating thin disk, where the ratio of rotation (V) to dispersion (sigma) exceeds unity. However, in the central 50 pc, the observations reveal a geometrically and optically thick structure of molecular gas (V/sigma<1 and N_H>10^{23} cm^{-2}) that is li…
While emission-line flux ratio diagnostics are the most common technique for identifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in optical spectra, applying this approach to single fiber spectra of galaxies can omit entire subpopulations of AGNs. Here, we use spatially resolved spectroscopy from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey to construct a sample of 10 galaxies where Baldwin-Philips-Terlevich line flux ratio diagnostics classify each galaxy's central $3^{\prime\prime}$ spectrum as LINER or star forming, while $>10\%$ of the spaxels in the galaxy's MaNGA footprin…
We present a large compilation of reddening estimates from broad-line Balmer decrements for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with measured X-ray column densities. The median reddening is E(B-V) ~ 0.77 +/- 0.10 for type-1 to type-1.9 AGNs with reported column densities. This is notably higher than the median reddening of AGNs from the SDSS. We attribute this to the selection bias of the SDSS towards blue AGNs. For other AGNs we find evidence of a publication bias against reporting low column densities. We find a significant correlation between N_H and E(B-V) but with a large scatter of +/- 1 dex (…
Several studies of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) have shown that the soft X-ray emission presents a size and morphology that resembles that of the narrow-line region (NLR) traced by [O III]. Since the NLR is mainly constituted by gas photoionised by the AGN, it seems logical to assume that this is also the primary source of the soft X-ray emission. However, these results are based on individual sources or small samples, particularly focused on type-2 Seyfert galaxies. Very little has been said concerning other types of AGN. The purpose of this work is to compare the circumnuclear morphol…

Near-infrared spectroscopic data for the five Seyfert galaxies with jet-gas interaction Mrk 348, Mrk 573, Mrk 1066, NGC 7212, and NGC 7465, taken with the LIRIS near-infrared camera/spectrometer at the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) are reported. The long-slit spectra reveal the characteristic strong emission lines of this type of objects. Many forbidden transitions and hydrogen recombination lines are employed here to study the excitation and ionization mechanisms that are dominating the narrow-line region emission of these objects, that is affected by the radio-jet interaction. Several abs…
Classification of intermediate redshift ($z$ = 0.3--0.8) emission line galaxies as star-forming galaxies, composite galaxies, active galactic nuclei (AGN), or low-ionization nuclear emission regions (LINERs) using optical spectra alone was impossible because the lines used for standard optical diagnostic diagrams: [NII], H$α$, and [SII] are redshifted out of the observed wavelength range. In this work, we address this problem using four supervised machine learning classification algorithms: $k$-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector classifier (SVC), random forest (RF), and a multi-layer perc…
What determines the nuclear radio emission in local galaxies? We combine optical [O III] line emission, robust black hole (BH) mass estimates, and high-resolution e-MERLIN 1.5-GHz data, from the LeMMINGs survey, of a statistically-complete sample of 280 nearby, optically active (LINER and Seyfert) and inactive HII and Absorption line galaxies [ALG]) galaxies. Using [O III] luminosity ($L_{\rm [O~III]}$) as a proxy for the accretion power, local galaxies follow distinct sequences in the optical-radio planes of BH activity, which suggest different origins of the nuclear radio emission for the op…
