In this paper we study the nuclear obscuration of galaxies hosting LINERs based on their X-ray and optical emission. They show column densities (N_H) at soft energies (0.5-2 keV) mostly related to the diffuse emission around the AGN, showing a correlation with the optical extinction. N_H at hard energies (2-10 keV) seem to be much higher than what would be expected from the optical extinction. They might be associated to the inner regions of the AGN, buried at optical wavelengths. The main result of this paper is that around 50% of our LINER sample shows signatures of Compton-thickness (CT) according to the most common tracers: the X-ray spectral index, F(2-10 keV)/F([OIII]) ratio and EW(FeKa). However, the EWs of CT LINERs are significantly lower than in CT Sy, suggesting that the 2-10 keV emission is dominated by electron scattering of the otherwise invisible AGN, or by emission from shocked gas associated to star formation rather than by reflection from the inner wall of the torus. However, no clear relation seems to exist between galaxies with optical dust lanes and X-ray classified CT objects. This may suggest that CT sources should be related to absorbing material located at the very inner regions of the AGN, maybe in the putative dusty torus. Larger M_BH and lower Eddington ratios than Sy galaxies have been found. This effect can be better attributed to LINER nuclei being hosted by earlier morphological types than Sy nuclei. However, it has to be noted that, once a proper correction to the X-ray luminosity is applied, LINERs show Eddington ratios overlapping those of Sy 2. We speculate with a possible scenario for LINER nuclei: an inner obscuring matter similar to that of Sy 2, and an external obscuring matter responsible for the optical extinction. CT sources appear to be more common among LINERs than Sy.
Most of the optically classified low ionisation narrow emission-line regions (LINERs) nuclei host an active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, how they fit into the unified model (UM) of AGN is still an open question. The aims of this work are to study at mid-infrared (mid-IR) (1) the Compton-thick nature of LINERs; and (2) the disappearance of the dusty torus in LINERs predicted from theoretical arguments. We have compiled all the available low spectral resolution mid-IR spectra of LINERs from the IRS/Spitzer (40 LINERs). We have complemented this sample with Spitzer/IRS spectra of PGQSOs, S1s, …
This paper compares the optical spectra of a wide range of galaxies categorised as members of the Low Ionisation Nuclear Emission Region (LINER) class of active galactic nuclei (AGN). LINERs are defined by emission spectra with relatively faint high ionisation lines (compared to other AGN classes). The gas emission luminosity ranges from the weak flux emanating from some nearby galactic nuclei all the way to extremely luminous radio galaxies, where the line emission can completely dominate the host galaxy starlight component. In this study I analyse the Sloane Digital Sky Survey optical spectr…
AIMS. This work addresses the AGN IR-selection dependency on intrinsic source luminosity and obscuration, in order to identify and charaterise biases which could affect conclusions in studies. METHODS. We study IR-selected AGN in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) survey and in the Cosmological Survey (COSMOS). The AGN sample is divided into low and high X-ray luminosity classes, and into unobscured (type-1) and obscured (type-2) classes by means of X-ray and optical spectroscopy data. Specifically in the X-rays regime, we adopt the intrinsic luminosity taking into account the estimated colum…
Galaxies, which often contain ionised gas, sometimes also exhibit a so-called low-ionisation nuclear emission line region (LINER). For 30 years this was attributed to a central mass-accreting supermassive black hole (AGN) of low luminosity, making LINER galaxies the largest AGN-sub-population, dominating in numbers over higher luminosity Seyfert galaxies and quasars. This, however, poses a serious problem. While the inferred energy balance is plausible, many LINERs clearly do not contain any other independent signatures of an AGN. Using integral field spectroscopic data from the CALIFA survey,…
Based on large optical and mid-infrared (IR) surveys, we investigate the relation between nuclear activity in local Seyfert 2 galaxies and galaxy interactions using a statistical neighbour counting technique. At the same level of host galaxy star formation (SF), we find that active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with stronger [OIII] emission lines do not show an excess of near neighbours, while AGNs with stronger mid-IR emission do have more near neighbours within a projected distance of 100 kpc. The excess neighbour count increases with decreasing projected radius. These results suggest a phase of to…
Using the SEDs of the weak AGNs 35 LINERs presented in a companion paper, we assess whether photoionization by the weak AGN can power the emission-line luminosities measured through the large (few-arcsecond) apertures used in ground-based spectroscopic surveys. Spectra taken through such apertures are used to define LINERs as a class and constrain non-stellar photoionization models for LINERs. Therefore, our energy budget test is a self-consistency check of the idea that the observed emission lines are powered by an AGN. We determine the ionizing luminosities and photon rates by integrating th…
This work presents the properties of 42 objects in the group of the most luminous, highest star formation rate LINERs at z = 0.04 - 0.11. We obtained long-slit spectroscopy of the nuclear regions for all sources, and FIR data (Herschel and IRAS) for 13 of them. We measured emission line intensities, extinction, stellar populations, stellar masses, ages, AGN luminosities, and star-formation rates. We find considerable differences from other low-redshift LINERs, in terms of extinction, and general similarity to star forming (SF) galaxies. We confirm the existence of such luminous LINERs in the l…
The goal of this work is to study the obscuration properties of mid-infrared (mid-IR) selected AGN. For that purpose, we use {\it{WISE}} sources in the Stripe 82-XMM area to identify mid-IR AGN candidates, applying the Assef et al. criteria. Stripe 82 has optical photometry $\approx$\,2 times deeper than any single-epoch SDSS region. XMM-Newton observations cover $\sim$26\,deg$^2$. Applying the aforementioned criteria, 1946 IR AGN are selected. $\sim 78\%$ have SDSS detection, while 1/3 of them is detected in X-rays, at a flux limit of $\rm \sim 5 \times 10^{-15}\,erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}$. Our fi…
The Balmer emission originated in the broad line region (BLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) could be either weak and difficult to detect, or even absent, for low luminosity AGNs, as LINERs. Our goals in this paper are threefold. First, we want to explore the AGN-nature of nearby type-1 LINERs. Second, we aim at deriving a reliable interpretation for the different components of emission lines by studying their kinematics and ionization mechanism. Third, we intend to probe the neutral gas in the nuclei of these LINERs. We study the 22 local (z<0.025) type-1 LINERs from the Palomar Survey, on …
X-ray variability is very common in active galactic nuclei (AGN), but these variations may not occur similarly in different families of AGN. We aim to disentangle the structure of low ionization nuclear emission line regions (LINERs) compared to Seyfert 2s by the study of their spectral properties and X-ray variations. We assembled the X-ray spectral parameters and variability patterns, which were obtained from simultaneous spectral fittings. Major differences are observed in the X-ray luminosities, and the Eddington ratios, which are higher in Seyfert 2s. Short-term X-ray variations were not …
We analyze the properties of the broad line region (BLR) in low luminosity AGN by using HST/STIS spectra. We consider a sample of 24 nearby galaxies in which the presence of a BLR has been reported from their Palomar ground-based spectra. Following a widely used strategy, we used the [SII] doublet to subtract the contribution of the narrow emission lines to the H-alpha+[NII] complex and to isolate the BLR emission. Significant residuals that suggest a BLR, are present. However, the results change substantially when the [OI] doublet is used. Furthermore, the spectra are also reproduced well by …
We present a detailed comparison between the 2-10 keV hard X-ray and infrared (IR) luminosity function (LF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The composite X-ray to IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of AGN used for connecting the hard X-ray LF (HXLF) and IR LF (IRLF) are modeled with a simple but well tested torus model based on the radiative transfer and photoionization code CLOUDY. Four observational determinations of the evolution of 2-10 keV HXLF and six evolution models of the obscured type-2 AGN fraction ($f_2$) have been considered. The 8.0 and 15 \micron LFs for the total, unobscu…
Passive red galaxies frequently contain warm ionized gas and have spectra similar to low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs). Here we investigate the nature of the ionizing sources powering this emission, by comparing nuclear spectroscopy from the Palomar survey with larger aperture data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find the line emission in the majority of passive red galaxies is spatially extended; the Halpha surface brightness profile depends on radius (r) as r^(-1.28). We detect strong line ratio gradients with radius in [N II]/Ha, [S II]/Ha, and [O III]/[S II], requ…
Radio outflows of extents ranging from a few parsecs to a few kiloparsecs are present in Seyfert and LINER galaxies that make up the `radio-quiet' AGN class. AGN jets and/or starburst superwinds have been suggested to produce these outflows. We present a brief review of radio outflows in Seyfert and LINER galaxies on different spatial scales. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of several individual Seyferts and LINERs suggest a link between AGN jets on parsec-scales and their kiloparsec-scale radio structures (KSRs). The whole range of misalignment angles present between the…
(Abridged) We attempt to infer the accretion mechanism and radiative processes giving rise to the SEDs of a well-defined optically-selected sample of LINERs showing a definite detection of broad Halpha emission (LINER 1s). We construct SEDs for six LINER~1s with simultaneous UV and X-ray fluxes, and we looked for multiwavelength, radio to X-ray and UV to X-ray, correlations. At a given X-ray luminosity, the average SED of the six LINER 1s in our sample: (1) resembles the SED of radio-loud quasars in the radio band, <log R_X>~-2.7, (2) exhibits a weak UV bump, <alpha_ox>~-1.17+-0.02 with a disp…
Despite the hypothesized similar face-on viewing angles, the infrared emission of type-1 AGNs has diverse spectral energy distribution (SED) shapes that deviate substantially from the well-characterized quasar templates. Motivated by the commonly-seen UV-optical obscuration and the discovery of parsec-scale mid-IR polar dust emission in some nearby AGNs, we develop semi-empirical SED libraries for reddened type-1 AGNs built on the quasar intrinsic templates, assuming low-level extinction caused by an extended distribution of large dust grains. We demonstrate that this model can reproduce the n…
The combination of optical and mid-infrared (MIR) photometry has been extensively used to select red active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our aim is to explore the obscuration properties of these red AGNs with both X-ray spectroscopy and spectral energy distributions (SEDs). In this study, we re-visit the relation between optical/MIR extinction and X-ray absorption. We use IR selection criteria, specifically the $W1$ and $W2$ WISE bands, to identify 4798 AGNs in the $\it{XMM-XXL}$ area ($\sim 25$deg$^2$). Application of optical/MIR colours ($r- W2 > 6$) reveals 561 red AGNs (14$\%$). Of these, 47 ha…
We present observations of the molecular gas in the nuclear environment of three prototypical low luminosity AGN (LLAGN), based on VLT/SINFONI AO-assisted integral-field spectroscopy of H2 1-0 S(1) emission at angular resolutions of ~0.17". On scales of 50-150 pc the spatial distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas are consistent with a rotating thin disk, where the ratio of rotation (V) to dispersion (sigma) exceeds unity. However, in the central 50 pc, the observations reveal a geometrically and optically thick structure of molecular gas (V/sigma<1 and N_H>10^{23} cm^{-2}) that is li…
We revisit the relation between H2O maser detection rate and nuclear obscuration for a sample of 114 Seyfert galaxies, drawn from the CfA, 12um and IRAS F25/F60 catalogs. These sources have mid-infrared spectra from the Spitzer Space Telescope and they are searched for X-ray and [O III], 5007Angstrom fluxes from the literature. We use the strength of the [O IV], 25.9um emission line as tracer for the intrinsic AGN strength. After normalization by [O IV] the observed X-ray flux provides information about X-ray absorption. The distribution of X-ray / [O IV] flux ratios is significantly different…
We explored a sample of 545 local galaxies using data from the 3XMM-DR7 and SDSS-DR8 surveys. We carried out all analyses up to z\,$\sim$\,0.2, and we studied the relation between X/O flux ratio and accretion rate for different classes of active galaxies such as LINERs and Seyfert 2. We obtained a slight correlation between the two parameters if the whole sample of AGN is used. However, LINERs and Sy2 galaxies show different properties, slight correlation and slight anti-correlation, respectively. This could confirm that LINERs and Sy2 galaxies have different accretion efficiencies and maybe d…
Unification Models of Active Galactic Nuclei postulate that all the observed differences between Type 1 and Type 2 objects are due to orientation effects with respect to the line-of-sight to the observer. The key ingredient of these models is the obscuring medium, historically envisaged as a toroidal structure on a parsec scale. However, many results obtained in the last few years are clearly showing the need for a more complex geometrical distribution of the absorbing media. In this paper we review the various pieces of evidence for obscuring media on different scales, from the vicinity of th…
Chemical abundance determinations in Low-Ionization Nuclear Line Regions (LINERs) are especially complex and uncertain because the nature of the ionizing source of this kind of object is unknown. In this work, we study the oxygen abundance in relation to the hydrogen abundance (O/H) of the gas phase of the UGC4805 LINER nucleus. Optical spectroscopic data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies (MaNGA) survey was employed to derive the O/H abundance of the UGC4805 nucleus based on the extrapolation of the disk abundance gradient, on calibrations between O/H abundance and strong emission-lines for Act…
Accretion and star formation (SF) rates in low redshift SDSS type-II active galactic nuclei (AGN) are critically evaluated. Comparison with photoionization models indicates that bolometric luminosity (Lbol) estimates based on L(oiii 5007A) severely underestimate Lbol in low ionization sources such as LINERs. An alternative method based on L(hb) is less sensitive to ionization level and a novel method, based on a combination of L(oiii 5007A) and L(oi 6300A), is erhaps the best. Using this method I show that low ionization AGN are accreting faster than assumed until now. Significant related othe…
We study the interaction of feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) and a multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM), in simulations including explicit stellar feedback, multi-phase cooling, accretion-disk winds, and Compton heating. We examine radii ~0.1-100 pc around a black hole (BH), where the accretion rate onto the BH is determined and where AGN-powered winds and radiation couple to the ISM. We conclude: (1) The BH accretion rate is determined by exchange of angular momentum between gas and stars in gravitational instabilities. This produces accretion rates ~0.03-1 Msun/yr, sufficient to p…
Dense gas in the centre of galaxies feeds massive black holes, but can also become a source of obscuration and limit our ability to find faint Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We use a high resolution cosmological radiative hydrodynamics simulation to connect the properties of the gas in the central region (a few tens of parsecs) of a high redshift galaxy to the growth of a massive black hole during the first billion years of the Universe. We find that the feedback from the AGN efficiently controls the growth of the black hole and limits the duration of the high accretion episodes by emptying the…
AGN obscuration in optical and X-rays: Host properties and the interplay of nuclear and galactic gas and dust in a combined SDSS-XMM sample

The material surrounding accreting supermassive black holes connects the active galactic nucleus (AGN) with its host galaxy and, besides being responsible for feeding the black hole, provides important information on the feedback that nuclear activity produces on the galaxy. In this review we summarize our current understanding of the close environment of accreting supermassive black holes obtained from studies of local AGN carried out in the infrared and X-ray band. The structure of this circumnuclear material is complex, clumpy and dynamical, and its covering factor depends on the accretion …
We combine two approaches to isolate the AGN luminosity at near-infrared wavelengths and relate the near-IR pure AGN luminosity to other tracers of the AGN. Using integral-field spectroscopic data of an archival sample of 51 local AGNs, we estimate the fraction of non-stellar light by comparing the nuclear equivalent width of the stellar 2.3 micron CO absorption feature with the intrinsic value for each galaxy. We compare this fraction to that derived from a spectral decomposition of the integrated light in the central arc second and find them to be consistent with each other. Using our estima…
A sample of 576 X-ray selected LINERs was constructed by combining data from the 3XMM-DR4 and SDSS-DR7 catalogues. The sample was used to investigate the fraction of galaxies hosting a LINER, finding that the fraction is a strong function of both stellar mass and black hole mass (scaling to the power of 1.6 +/- 0.2 and 0.6 +/- 0.1 respectively) and that it rises close to unity at the highest black hole masses and lowest X-ray luminosities. After obtaining radio flux densities from the FIRST survey, the sample was also used to investigate the Fundamental Plane of black hole activity - a scale-i…
Using a new color-color diagnostic diagram in the mid infrared built from WISE data, the MIRDD, we compare narrow emission-line galaxies (NELGs) that exhibit different activity types (star-forming galaxies, SFGs, and AGNs, i.e.,LINERs, Sy2s and TOs), with broad-line AGNs (QSOs and Sy1s) and BL Lac objects at low redshift ($z \le 0.25$). We show that the BL Lac objects occupy in the MIRDD the same region as the LINERs, whereas the QSOs and Sy1s occupy an intermediate region, between the LINERs and the Sy2s.In the MIRDD these galaxies trace a sequence that can be reproduced by a power law, $F_ν=…
We report the results of joint Chandra/ACIS - NuSTAR deep observations of NGC 1167, the host galaxy of the young radio jet B2 0258+35. In the ACIS data we detect X-ray emission, extended both along and orthogonal to the jet. At the end of the SE radio jet, we find lower-energy X-ray emission that coincides with a region of CO turbulence and fast outflow motions. This suggests that the hot Interstellar Medium (ISM) may be compressed by the jet and molecular outflow, resulting in more efficient cooling. Hydrodynamic simulations of jet-ISM interaction tailored to NGC 1167 are in agreement with th…
We present a large sample of infrared-luminous candidate active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that lack X-ray detections in Chandra, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR fields. We selected all optically detected SDSS sources with redshift measurements, combined additional broadband photometry from WISE, UKIDSS, 2MASS, and GALEX, and modeled the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of our sample sources. We parameterize nuclear obscuration in our SEDs with $E(B\!-\!V)_{\text{AGN}}$ and uncover thousands of powerful obscured AGNs that lack X-ray counterparts, many of which are identified as AGN candidates based on …
We study the X-ray properties of LINER sources with definite detection of a broad H(alpha) emission line in their optical spectra, LINER 1s from Ho et al. sample. These objects preferentially harbor a low luminosity active nucleus at the center and show small or no intrinsic absorption (<10^(22) cm^(-1)). We analyzed all available X-ray archived XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of 13 LINER 1s satisfying the above criterion in a systematic homogeneous way. We looked for any correlations between the X-ray properties and the intrinsic parameters of our sample of LINER 1s. An absorbed power-law…
AGN radiative feedback as the main regulator of [O III] outflow activity and obscuration in X-ray AGN

In 2016 we carried out a Swift monitoring program to track the X-ray hardness variability of eight type-I AGN over a year. The purpose of this monitoring was to find intense obscuration events in AGN, and thereby study them by triggering joint XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST observations. We successfully accomplished this for NGC 3783 in December 2016. We found heavy X-ray absorption produced by an obscuring outflow in this AGN. As a result of this obscuration, interesting absorption features appear in the UV and X-ray spectra, which are not present in the previous epochs. Namely, the obscuration …

We use the SDSS and WISE surveys to investigate the real nature of galaxies defined as LINERs in the BPT diagram. After establishing a mid-infrared colour W2-W3 = 2.5 as the optimal separator between galaxies with and without star formation, we investigate the loci of different galaxy classes in the W_{Ha} versus W2-W3 space. We find that: (1) A large fraction of LINER-like galaxies are emission-line retired galaxies, i.e galaxies which have stopped forming stars and are powered by hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES). Their W2-W3 colours show no sign of star formation and their Ha equivalent w…
Double-peaked emission line AGN (DPAGN) have been regarded as binary black hole candidates. We present here results from parsec-scale radio observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of five DPAGN belonging to the KISSR sample of emission-line galaxies. This work concludes our pilot study of nine type 2 Seyfert and LINER DPAGN from the KISSR sample. In the nine sources, dual compact cores are only detected in the "offset AGN", KISSR 102. The overall incidence of jets however, in the eight sources detected with the VLBA, is $\ge$60%. We find a difference in the "missing flux density"…
(Abridged) Based on UV to X-ray and radio to UV flux ratios, some argue that low ionization emission line regions (LINERs) and low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) are a scaled-down version of their more luminous predecessors Seyfert galaxies. Others, based on the lack of X-ray short (hours) time-scale variability, the non-detection of an iron line at 6.4 keV, and the faint UV emission, suggest the truncation of the classical thin accretion disk in the inner regions of the AGN where a radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) structure forms. We investigate the LINER-Seyfert connection by studying t…
We conducted a Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observation of the low mass active galactic nucleus (AGN) in galaxy NGC 4293 ($z=0.003$). The object is associated with a low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER). Its black hole mass is estimated as $\sim10^5$ or $\sim10^7 M_\odot$. The VLBA 1.5 GHz image shows an inverse symmetric structure with two discrete radio blobs separated by an angular distance of $\sim120$ mas, corresponding to $\sim7$ parsec. Furthermore, its integrated radio spectrum has a turnover at the frequency of $\sim0.44$ GHz. Based on the compactness and spectrum, t…
AGN populations in the local universe: their alignment with the main-sequence, characteristics of their stellar populations, accretion efficiency, and the impact of AGN feedback
Optical studies of starbursts, AGN and their connections usually leave out galaxies whose emission lines are too weak to warrant reliable measurement and classification. Yet, weak line galaxies abound, and deserve a closer look. We show that these galaxies are either massive, metal rich star-forming systems, or, more often, LINERs. From our detailed stellar population analysis, we find that these LINERs have stopped forming stars long ago. Moreover, their ionizing radiation field is amazingly consistent with that expected from their old stellar populations alone. The black-hole in the centers …

We study the multiwavelength properties of an optically selected sample of Low Ionization Nuclear Emission-line Regions (LINERs), in an attempt to determine the accretion mechanism powering their central engine. We show how their X-ray spectral characteristics, and their spectral energy distribution compare to luminous AGN, and briefly discuss their connection to their less massive counter-parts galactic black-hole X-ray binaries.
Multi-scale simulations have made it possible to follow gas inflows onto massive black holes (BHs) from galactic scales to the accretion disk. When sufficient gas is driven towards the BH, gravitational instabilities generically form lopsided, eccentric disks that propagate inwards. The lopsided stellar disk exerts a strong torque on the gas disk, driving inflows that fuel rapid BH growth. Here, we investigate whether the same gas disk is the 'torus' invoked to explain obscured AGN. The disk is generically thick and has characteristic ~1-10 pc sizes and masses resembling those required of the …
We present the results of a Suzaku monitoring campaign of the Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC7582. The source is characterized by very rapid (on timescales even lower than a day) changes of the column density of an inner absorber, together with the presence of constant components arising as reprocessing from a Compton-thick material. The best fitting scenario implies important modifications to the zeroth order view of Unified Models. While the existence of a pc-scale torus is needed in order to produce a constant Compton reflection component and an iron K$α$ emission line, in this Seyfert 2 galaxy this …
We investigated the 65$μ$m, 71$μ$m, 79$μ$m, 84$μ$m, 119$μ$m, and 163$μ$m OH doublets of 178 local (0 < $z$ < 0.35) galaxies. They were observed using the $Herschel$/PACS spectrometer, including Seyfert galaxies, LINERs, and star-forming galaxies. We observe these doublets exclusively in absorption (OH71), primarily in absorption (OH65, OH84), mostly in emission (OH79), only in emission (OH163) and an approximately even mix of the both (OH119). In 19 galaxies we find P-Cygni or reverse P-Cygni line profiles in the OH doublets. We use several galaxy observables to probe spectral classification, …
We aim to constrain the evolution of AGN as a function of obscuration using an X-ray selected sample of $\sim2000$ AGN from a multi-tiered survey including the CDFS, AEGIS-XD, COSMOS and XMM-XXL fields. The spectra of individual X-ray sources are analysed using a Bayesian methodology with a physically realistic model to infer the posterior distribution of the hydrogen column density and intrinsic X-ray luminosity. We develop a novel non-parametric method which allows us to robustly infer the distribution of the AGN population in X-ray luminosity, redshift and obscuring column density, relying …
Nuclear starburst discs (NSDs) are star-forming discs that may be residing in the nuclear regions of active galaxies at intermediate redshifts. One dimensional (1D) analytical models developed by Thompson et al. (2005) show that these discs can possess an inflationary atmosphere when dust is sublimated on parsec scales. This make NSDs a viable source for AGN obscuration. We model the two dimensional (2D) structure of NSDs using an iterative method in order to compute the explicit vertical solutions for a given annulus. These solutions satisfy energy and hydrostatic balance, as well as the radi…
We present the results obtained from timing and spectral studies of the highly obscured low luminosity active galactic nucleus NGC~4941 using data obtained from the {\it Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array} and the {\it Neil Gehrels Swift} Observatories. We find similar variability in $3-10$~keV and $10-60$~keV energy ranges with fractional rms variability of $\sim$14\%. We investigate broad-band spectral properties of the source in 3-150 keV range, using data from {\it NuSTAR} and {\it Swift}/BAT, with phenomenological slab model and physically motivated {\tt mytorus} model. From the spectr…

The merger of two or more galaxies can enhance the inflow of material from galactic scales into the close environments of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), obscuring and feeding the supermassive black hole (SMBH). Both recent simulations and observations of AGN in mergers have confirmed that mergers are related to strong nuclear obscuration. However, it is still unclear how AGN obscuration evolves in the last phases of the merger process. We study a sample of 60 Luminous and Ultra-luminous IR galaxies (U/LIRGs) from the GOALS sample observed by NuSTAR. We find that the fraction of AGN that are Com…
