The combination of optical and mid-infrared (MIR) photometry has been extensively used to select red active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our aim is to explore the obscuration properties of these red AGNs with both X-ray spectroscopy and spectral energy distributions (SEDs). In this study, we re-visit the relation between optical/MIR extinction and X-ray absorption. We use IR selection criteria, specifically the $W1$ and $W2$ WISE bands, to identify 4798 AGNs in the $\it{XMM-XXL}$ area ($\sim 25$deg$^2$). Application of optical/MIR colours ($r- W2 > 6$) reveals 561 red AGNs (14$\%$). Of these, 47 have available X-ray spectra with at least 50 net (background-subtracted) counts per detector. For these sources, we construct SEDs from the optical to the MIR using the CIGALE code. The SED fitting shows that 44 of these latter 47 sources present clear signs of obscuration based on the AGN emission and the estimated inclination angle. Fitting the SED also reveals ten systems ($\sim20\%$) which are dominated by the galaxy. In these cases, the red colours are attributed to the host galaxy rather than AGN absorption. Excluding these ten systems from our sample and applying X-ray spectral fitting analysis shows that up to $76\%$ (28/37) of the IR red AGNs present signs of X-ray absorption. Thus, there are nine sources ($\sim20\%$ of the sample) that although optically red, are not substantially X-ray absorbed. Approximately $50\%$ of these sources present broad emission lines in their optical spectra. We suggest that the reason for this apparent discrepancy is that the r-W2 criterion is sensitive to smaller amounts of obscuration relative to the X-ray spectroscopy. In conclusion, it appears that the majority of red AGNs present considerable obscuration levels as shown by their SEDs. Their X-ray absorption is moderate with a mean of $\rm N_H \sim 10^{22}\, \rm{cm^{-2}}$.
Dust is observed in the polar regions of nearby AGN and it is known to contribute substantially to their mid-IR emission and to the obscuration of their UV to optical emission. We selected a sample of 1275 BLAGN in the XMM-XXL field, with optical to infrared photometric data. These AGN are seen along their polar direction and we expect a maximal impact of dust located around the poles when it is present. We used X-CIGALE, which introduces a dust component to account for obscuration along the polar directions, modeled as a foreground screen, and an extinction curve that is chosen as it steepens…
This work is part of a series of studies focusing on the environment and the properties of the X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) population from the XXL survey. The present survey, given its large area, continuity, extensive multiwavelength coverage, and large-scale structure information, is ideal for this kind of study. Here, we focus on the XXL-South (XXL-S) field. Our main aim is to study the environment of the various types of X-ray selected AGN and investigate its possible role in AGN triggering and evolution. We studied the large-scale (>1 Mpc) environment up to redshift z=1 us…
X-rays offer a reliable method to identify Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). However, in the high-redshift Universe X-ray AGN are poorly sampled due to their relatively low space density and the small areas covered by X-ray surveys. In addition to wide-area X-ray surveys, it is important to have deep optical data in order to locate the optical counterparts and determine their redshifts. In this work, we build a high-redshift ($z\geqslant3.5$) X-ray selected AGN sample in the XMM-XXL northern field using the most updated [0.5-2 keV] catalogue along with a plethora of new spectroscopic and multi-wav…
The XMM-XXL Survey spans two fields of $\rm 25$ deg$^2$ each observed for more than 6Ms with XMM, which provided a sample of tens of thousands of point sources with a flux limit of $\sim 2.2 \times 10^{-15}$ and $\sim 1.4 \times 10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{2}$, corresponding to 50% of the area curve, in the soft band and hard band, respectively. In this paper we present the spatial clustering properties of $\sim 3100$ and $\sim 1900$ X-ray active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the 0.5-2 and 2-10 keV bands, respectively, which have been spectroscopically observed with the AAOmega facility. This samp…
We present the results of a study of the AGN density in a homogeneous and well-studied sample of 167 bona fide X-ray galaxy clusters ($0.1<z<0.5$) from the XXL Survey. The results can provide evidence of the physical mechanisms that drive AGN and galaxy evolution within clusters. The XXL cluster sample mostly comprises poor and moderately rich structures ($M=10^{13} - 4\times10^{14} M_{\rm o}$). Our aim is to statistically study the demographics of cluster AGNs as a function of cluster mass and host galaxy position. To investigate the effect of the environment on AGN activity, we computed the …
We studied a sample of 274 radio and X-ray selected quasars (XQSOs) detected in the COSMOS and XXL-S radio surveys at 3 GHz and 2.1 GHz, respectively. This sample was identified by adopting a conservative threshold in X-ray luminosity, Lx [2-10\ keV] >= 10^44 erg/s, selecting only the most powerful quasars. Using available multiwavelength data, we examined various criteria for the selection of radio-loud (RL) and radio-quiet (RQ) XQSOs, finding that the number of RL/RQ XQSOs changes significantly depending on the chosen criterion. This discrepancy arises due to the different criteria tracing d…
We study the space density evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the $610 \ \mathrm{MHz}$ radio survey of the XXL-North field, performed with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The survey covers an area of $30.4 \ \mathrm{deg}^2$, with a beamsize of $6.5 \ \mathrm{arcsec}$. The survey is divided into two parts, one covering an area of $11.9 \ \mathrm{deg}^2$ with $1 σ$ rms noise of $200\ \mathrm{μJy \ beam^{-1}}$ and the other spanning $18.5 \ \mathrm{deg}^2$ with rms noise of $45\ \mathrm{μJy \ beam^{-1}}$. We extracted the catalog of radio components above $7 σ$. The catal…
Context. The XMM-XXL survey uses observations from XMM-Newton to detect clusters of galaxies over a wide range in mass and redshift. The moderate PSF of XMM-Newton means that point sources within or projected onto a cluster may not be separated from the cluster emission, leading to enhanced luminosities and affecting the selection function of the cluster survey. Aims. We present the results of short Chandra observations of 21 galaxy clusters and cluster candidates at redshifts z $>$ 1 detected in the XMM-XXL survey in X-rays or selected in the optical and infra-red. Methods. With the superior …
The evolution of the comoving kinetic luminosity densities ($Ω_{\rm{kin}}$) of the radio loud (RL) high-excitation radio galaxies (RL HERGs) and the low-excitation radio galaxies (LERGs) in the XXL-S field is presented. The wide area and deep radio and optical data of XXL-S have allowed the construction of the radio luminosity functions (RLFs) of the RL HERGs and LERGs across a wide range in radio luminosity out to high redshift ($z = 1.3$). The LERG RLFs display weak evolution: $Φ(z)$ $\propto$ (1+$z$)$^{0.67 \pm 0.17}$ in the pure density evolution (PDE) case and $Φ(z)$ $\propto$ (1+$z$)$^{0…
This paper presents a survey of X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) with optical spectroscopic follow-up in a $\sim 18\, \rm{deg^2}$ area of the equatorial XMM-XXL north field. A sample of 8445 point-like X-ray sources detected by XMM-Newton above a limiting flux of $F_{\rm 0.5-10\, keV} > 10^{-15} \rm\,erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}$ was matched to optical (SDSS) and infrared (WISE) counterparts. We followed up 3042 sources brighter than $r=22.5$ mag with the SDSS BOSS spectrograph. The spectra yielded a reliable redshift measurement for 2578 AGN in the redshift range $z=0.02-5.0$, with $0.5-…
In this work, we aimed at investigating the star formation rate of active galactic nuclei host galaxies in the early Universe. To this end, we constructed a sample of 149 luminous ($\rm L_{2-10keV} > 10^{44}\,erg\,s^{-1}$) X-ray AGNs at $\rm z \geq3.5$ selected in three fields with different depths and observed areas (Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey, XMM-XXL North and eFEDS). We built their spectral energy distributions (SED) using available multi-wavelength photometry from X-rays up to far-IR. Then, we estimated the stellar mass, M$_{*}$, and the SFR of the AGNs using the X-CIGALE SED fitting al…
We present a catalogue containing the redshifts of 3,660 X-ray selected targets in the XXL southern field. The redshifts were obtained with the AAOmega spectrograph and 2dF fibre positioner on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The catalogue contains 1,515 broad line AGN, 528 stars, and redshifts for 41 out of the 49 brightest X-ray selected clusters in the XXL southern field.
Modern cosmological simulations rely heavily on feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) in order to stave off overcooling in massive galaxies and galaxy groups and clusters. An important independent test is whether or not the simulations capture the broad demographics of the observed AGN population. Here, we have used the cosmo-OWLS suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to produce realistic synthetic catalogs of X-ray AGN out to $z$=3, with the aim of comparing the catalogs to the observed X-ray AGN population in the XXL survey and other recent surveys. We focused on the unabsorb…
The XXL survey LII : The evolution of radio AGN luminosity function determined via parametric methods from GMRT, ATCA, VLA and Cambridge interferometer observations
The 2.1 GHz radio source catalogue of the 25 deg$^2$ ultimate XMM extragalactic survey south (XXL-S) field, observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), is presented. The final radio mosaic achieved a resolution of $\sim$$4.8"$ and a median rms noise of $σ\approx41$ $μ$Jy/beam. To date, this is the largest area radio survey to reach this flux density level. A total of 6350 radio components above 5$σ$ are included in the component catalogue, 26.4% of which are resolved. Of these components, 111 were merged together to create 48 multiple-component radio sources, resulting in a tot…
This article belongs to the first series of XXL publications. It presents multifibre spectroscopic observations of three 0.55 sq.deg. fields in the XXL Survey, which were selected on the basis of their high density of X-ray-detected clusters. The observations were obtained with the AutoFib2+WYFFOS (AF2) wide-field fibre spectrograph mounted on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope. The paper first describes the scientific rationale, the preparation, the data reduction, and the results of the observations, and then presents a study of active galactic nuclei (AGN) within three superclusters. We ob…
We present the 25 square-degree GMRT-XXL-N 610 MHz radio continuum survey, conducted at 50~cm wavelength with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) towards the XXL Northern field (XXL-N). We combined previously published observations of the XMM-Large Scale Structure (XMM-LSS) field, located in the central part of XXL-N, with newly conducted observations towards the remaining XXL-N area, and imaged the combined data-set using the Source Peeling and Atmospheric Modeling ({\sc SPAM}) pipeline. The final mosaic encompasses a total area of $30.4$ square degrees, with ${\rm rms}<150~μ$Jy/beam o…
X-ray extragalactic surveys are ideal laboratories for the study of the evolution and clustering of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The XXL Survey spans two fields of a combined 50 $deg^2$ observed for more than 6Ms with XMM-Newton, occupying the parameter space between deep surveys and very wide area surveys; at the same time it benefits from a wealth of ancillary data. This paper marks the first release of the XXL point source catalogue selected in the 2-10 keV energy band with limiting flux $F_{2-10keV}=4.8\cdot10^{-14}\rm{erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}}$. We use both public and proprietary data sets t…
The wide-area XMM-XXL X-ray survey is used to explore the fraction of obscured AGN at high accretion luminosities, $L_X (\rm 2-10 \, keV) > 10^{44} \, erg \,s ^{-1}$, and out to redshift $z\approx1.5$. The sample covers an area of about $\rm14\,deg^2$ and provides constraints on the space density of powerful AGN over a wide range of neutral hydrogen column densities extending beyond the Compton-thick limit, $\rm N_H\approx10^{24}\,cm^{-2}$. The fraction of obscured Compton-thin ($\rm N_H=10^{22}-10^{24}\,cm^{-2}$) AGN is estimated to be $\approx0.35$ for luminosities $L_X(\rm 2-10\,keV)>10^{44…
Dense gas in the centre of galaxies feeds massive black holes, but can also become a source of obscuration and limit our ability to find faint Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We use a high resolution cosmological radiative hydrodynamics simulation to connect the properties of the gas in the central region (a few tens of parsecs) of a high redshift galaxy to the growth of a massive black hole during the first billion years of the Universe. We find that the feedback from the AGN efficiently controls the growth of the black hole and limits the duration of the high accretion episodes by emptying the…

(ESAC));Department of Astronomy, University of Geneva(日内瓦大学天文学系);INAF–Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma(意大利国家天体物理研究所罗马天文台);University of Helsinki(赫尔辛基大学);IRAP, Université de Toulouse, CNRS, UPS, CNES(图卢兹大学 IRAP 研究所(CNRS、UPS、CNES))
The material surrounding accreting supermassive black holes connects the active galactic nucleus (AGN) with its host galaxy and, besides being responsible for feeding the black hole, provides important information on the feedback that nuclear activity produces on the galaxy. In this review we summarize our current understanding of the close environment of accreting supermassive black holes obtained from studies of local AGN carried out in the infrared and X-ray band. The structure of this circumnuclear material is complex, clumpy and dynamical, and its covering factor depends on the accretion …
We combine two approaches to isolate the AGN luminosity at near-infrared wavelengths and relate the near-IR pure AGN luminosity to other tracers of the AGN. Using integral-field spectroscopic data of an archival sample of 51 local AGNs, we estimate the fraction of non-stellar light by comparing the nuclear equivalent width of the stellar 2.3 micron CO absorption feature with the intrinsic value for each galaxy. We compare this fraction to that derived from a spectral decomposition of the integrated light in the central arc second and find them to be consistent with each other. Using our estima…
We present a large sample of infrared-luminous candidate active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that lack X-ray detections in Chandra, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR fields. We selected all optically detected SDSS sources with redshift measurements, combined additional broadband photometry from WISE, UKIDSS, 2MASS, and GALEX, and modeled the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of our sample sources. We parameterize nuclear obscuration in our SEDs with $E(B\!-\!V)_{\text{AGN}}$ and uncover thousands of powerful obscured AGNs that lack X-ray counterparts, many of which are identified as AGN candidates based on …
We present 2.1 GHz imaging with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) of a 6.5 deg^2 region within the XXM-Newton XXL South field using a band of 1.1-3.1 GHz. We achieve an angular resolution of 4.7" x 4.2" in the final radio continuum map with a median rms noise level of 50 uJy/beam. We identify 1389 radio sources in the field with peak S/N >=5 and present the catalogue of observed parameters. We find that 305 sources are resolved, of which 77 consist of multiple radio components. These number counts are in agreement with those found for the COSMOS-VLA 1.4 GHz survey. We derive spectra…
AIMS. This work addresses the AGN IR-selection dependency on intrinsic source luminosity and obscuration, in order to identify and charaterise biases which could affect conclusions in studies. METHODS. We study IR-selected AGN in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) survey and in the Cosmological Survey (COSMOS). The AGN sample is divided into low and high X-ray luminosity classes, and into unobscured (type-1) and obscured (type-2) classes by means of X-ray and optical spectroscopy data. Specifically in the X-rays regime, we adopt the intrinsic luminosity taking into account the estimated colum…
We present the results of a Suzaku monitoring campaign of the Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC7582. The source is characterized by very rapid (on timescales even lower than a day) changes of the column density of an inner absorber, together with the presence of constant components arising as reprocessing from a Compton-thick material. The best fitting scenario implies important modifications to the zeroth order view of Unified Models. While the existence of a pc-scale torus is needed in order to produce a constant Compton reflection component and an iron K$α$ emission line, in this Seyfert 2 galaxy this …
Based on large optical and mid-infrared (IR) surveys, we investigate the relation between nuclear activity in local Seyfert 2 galaxies and galaxy interactions using a statistical neighbour counting technique. At the same level of host galaxy star formation (SF), we find that active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with stronger [OIII] emission lines do not show an excess of near neighbours, while AGNs with stronger mid-IR emission do have more near neighbours within a projected distance of 100 kpc. The excess neighbour count increases with decreasing projected radius. These results suggest a phase of to…
We examine the host morphologies of heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) at $z\sim1$ to test whether obscured supermassive black hole growth at this epoch is preferentially linked to galaxy mergers. Our sample consists of 154 obscured AGN with $N_{\rm H}>10^{23.5}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $z<1.5$. Using visual classifications, we compare the morphologies of these AGN to control samples of moderately obscured ($10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ $<N_{\rm H}< 10^{23.5}$ cm$^{-2}$) and unobscured ($N_{\rm H}<10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) AGN. These control AGN are matched in redshift and intrinsic X-ray luminosity to our h…
We study the 850um emission in X-ray selected AGN in the 2 sq-deg COSMOS field using new data from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey. We find 19 850um bright X-ray AGN in a high-sensitivity region covering 0.89 sq-deg with flux densities of S850=4-10 mJy. The 19 AGN span the full range in redshift and hard X-ray luminosity covered by the sample - 0.7<z<3.5 and 43.2<log10(LX) <45. We report a highly significant stacked 850um detection of a hard X-ray flux-limited population of 699 z>1 X-ray AGN - S850=0.71+/-0.08mJy. We explore trends in the stacked 850um flux densities with redshift, finding…
AGN radiative feedback as the main regulator of [O III] outflow activity and obscuration in X-ray AGN
Max-Planck-Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik(马克斯·普朗克地外物理研究所);Excellence Cluster ORIGINS(ORIGINS卓越集群);School of Physics and Astronomy, Tel Aviv University(特拉维夫大学物理与天文学学院);INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte(意大利国家天体物理研究所卡波迪蒙特天文台);Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy, Department of Physics, Durham University(达勒姆大学物理系河外天文中心)
In 2016 we carried out a Swift monitoring program to track the X-ray hardness variability of eight type-I AGN over a year. The purpose of this monitoring was to find intense obscuration events in AGN, and thereby study them by triggering joint XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST observations. We successfully accomplished this for NGC 3783 in December 2016. We found heavy X-ray absorption produced by an obscuring outflow in this AGN. As a result of this obscuration, interesting absorption features appear in the UV and X-ray spectra, which are not present in the previous epochs. Namely, the obscuration …
Near-Eddington radiation from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has significant dynamical influence on the surrounding dusty gas, plausibly furnishing AGNs with geometrically thick obscuration. We investigate this paradigm with radiative magnetohydrodynamics simulations. The simulations solve the magnetohydrodynamics equations simultaneously with the infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) radiative transfer (RT) equations; no approximate closure is used for RT. We find that our torus, when given a suitable sub-Keplerian angular momentum profile, spontaneously evolves toward a state in which its openin…
We explore the relationship between X-ray absorption and optical obscuration within the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) which has been collecting and analyzing the optical and X-ray spectra for 641 hard X-ray selected ($E>14$ keV) active galactic nuclei (AGN). We use the deviation from a linear broad H$α$-to-X-ray relationship as an estimate of the maximum optical obscuration towards the broad line region and compare the $A_{\rm V}$ to the hydrogen column densities ($N_{\rm H}$) found through systematic modeling of their X-ray spectra. We find that the inferred columns implied by $A_{\rm V…
We present measurements of broad emission lines and virial estimates of supermassive black hole masses ($M_{BH}$) for a large sample of ultra-hard X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) as part of the second data release of the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS/DR2). Our catalog includes $M_{BH}$ estimates for a total 689 AGNs, determined from the H$α$, H$β$, $MgII\lambda2798$, and/or $CIV\lambda1549$ broad emission lines. The core sample includes a total of 512 AGNs drawn from the 70-month Swift/BAT all-sky catalog. We also provide measurements for 177 additional AGNs that are drawn fr…
We describe a complete volume limited sample of nearby active galaxies selected by their 14-195keV luminosity, and outline its rationale for studying the mechanisms regulating gas inflow and outflow. We describe also a complementary sample of inactive galaxies, selected to match the AGN host galaxy properties. The active sample appears to have no bias in terms of AGN type, the only difference being the neutral absorbing column which is two orders of magnitude greater for the Seyfert 2s. In the luminosity range spanned by the sample, log L_{14-195keV} [erg/s] = 42.4-43.7, the optically obscured…
It is known that some active galactic nuclei (AGNs) transited from type 1 to type 2 or vice versa. There are two explanations for the so-called changing look AGNs: one is the dramatic change of the obscuration along the line-of-sight, the other is the variation of accretion rate. In this paper, we report the detection of large amplitude variations in the mid-infrared luminosity during the transitions in 10 changing look AGNs using WISE and newly released NEOWISE-R data. The mid-infrared light curves of 10 objects echoes the variability in the optical band with a time lag expected for dust repr…
The goal of this work is to study the obscuration properties of mid-infrared (mid-IR) selected AGN. For that purpose, we use {\it{WISE}} sources in the Stripe 82-XMM area to identify mid-IR AGN candidates, applying the Assef et al. criteria. Stripe 82 has optical photometry $\approx$\,2 times deeper than any single-epoch SDSS region. XMM-Newton observations cover $\sim$26\,deg$^2$. Applying the aforementioned criteria, 1946 IR AGN are selected. $\sim 78\%$ have SDSS detection, while 1/3 of them is detected in X-rays, at a flux limit of $\rm \sim 5 \times 10^{-15}\,erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}$. Our fi…
Most of the optically classified low ionisation narrow emission-line regions (LINERs) nuclei host an active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, how they fit into the unified model (UM) of AGN is still an open question. The aims of this work are to study at mid-infrared (mid-IR) (1) the Compton-thick nature of LINERs; and (2) the disappearance of the dusty torus in LINERs predicted from theoretical arguments. We have compiled all the available low spectral resolution mid-IR spectra of LINERs from the IRS/Spitzer (40 LINERs). We have complemented this sample with Spitzer/IRS spectra of PGQSOs, S1s, …
Statistical studies of X-ray selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) indicate that the fraction of obscured AGN increases with increasing redshift, and the results suggest that a significant part of the accretion growth occurs behind obscuring material in the early universe. We investigate the obscured fraction of highly accreting X-ray AGN at around the peak epoch of supermassive black hole growth utilizing the wide and deep X-ray and optical/IR imaging datasets. A unique sample of luminous X-ray selected AGNs above $z>2$ was constructed by matching the XMM-SERVS X-ray point-source catalog with…
We aim to constrain the evolution of AGN as a function of obscuration using an X-ray selected sample of $\sim2000$ AGN from a multi-tiered survey including the CDFS, AEGIS-XD, COSMOS and XMM-XXL fields. The spectra of individual X-ray sources are analysed using a Bayesian methodology with a physically realistic model to infer the posterior distribution of the hydrogen column density and intrinsic X-ray luminosity. We develop a novel non-parametric method which allows us to robustly infer the distribution of the AGN population in X-ray luminosity, redshift and obscuring column density, relying …
Nuclear starburst discs (NSDs) are star-forming discs that may be residing in the nuclear regions of active galaxies at intermediate redshifts. One dimensional (1D) analytical models developed by Thompson et al. (2005) show that these discs can possess an inflationary atmosphere when dust is sublimated on parsec scales. This make NSDs a viable source for AGN obscuration. We model the two dimensional (2D) structure of NSDs using an iterative method in order to compute the explicit vertical solutions for a given annulus. These solutions satisfy energy and hydrostatic balance, as well as the radi…
We present a detailed comparison between the 2-10 keV hard X-ray and infrared (IR) luminosity function (LF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The composite X-ray to IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of AGN used for connecting the hard X-ray LF (HXLF) and IR LF (IRLF) are modeled with a simple but well tested torus model based on the radiative transfer and photoionization code CLOUDY. Four observational determinations of the evolution of 2-10 keV HXLF and six evolution models of the obscured type-2 AGN fraction ($f_2$) have been considered. The 8.0 and 15 \micron LFs for the total, unobscu…
We present a multi-frequency study of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) IRAS 00183-7111 (z=0.327), selected from the Spoon diagnostic diagram as a highly obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidate. ALMA Cycle 0 millimetre and X-ray observations are used; the main aim is to verify at what level the molecular gas, traced by the CO, may be responsible for the obscuration observed at X-ray energies. Theory and observations both suggest that galaxy-scale absorption may play a role in the AGN obscuration at intermediate (i.e. Compton-thin) column densities. We derived a molecular gas c…
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are believed to be obscured by an optical thick "torus" that covers a large fraction of solid angles for the nuclei. However, the physical origin of the tori and the differences in the tori among AGNs are not clear. In a previous paper based on three-dimensional radiation-hydorodynamic calculations, we proposed a physics-based mechanism for the obscuration, called "radiation-driven fountains," in which the circulation of the gas driven by central radiation naturally forms a thick disk that partially obscures the nuclear emission. Here, we expand this mechanism and…
The XXL survey currently covers two 25 sq. deg. patches with XMM observations of ~10ks. We summarise the scientific results associated with the first release of the XXL data set, that occurred mid 2016. We review several arguments for increasing the survey depth to 40 ks during the next decade of XMM operations. X-ray (z<2) cluster, (z<4) AGN and cosmic background survey science will then benefit from an extraordinary data reservoir. This, combined with deep multi-$λ$ observations, will lead to solid standalone cosmological constraints and provide a wealth of information on the formation and e…
We present the results obtained from timing and spectral studies of the highly obscured low luminosity active galactic nucleus NGC~4941 using data obtained from the {\it Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array} and the {\it Neil Gehrels Swift} Observatories. We find similar variability in $3-10$~keV and $10-60$~keV energy ranges with fractional rms variability of $\sim$14\%. We investigate broad-band spectral properties of the source in 3-150 keV range, using data from {\it NuSTAR} and {\it Swift}/BAT, with phenomenological slab model and physically motivated {\tt mytorus} model. From the spectr…
The merger of two or more galaxies can enhance the inflow of material from galactic scales into the close environments of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), obscuring and feeding the supermassive black hole (SMBH). Both recent simulations and observations of AGN in mergers have confirmed that mergers are related to strong nuclear obscuration. However, it is still unclear how AGN obscuration evolves in the last phases of the merger process. We study a sample of 60 Luminous and Ultra-luminous IR galaxies (U/LIRGs) from the GOALS sample observed by NuSTAR. We find that the fraction of AGN that are Com…
Despite the hypothesized similar face-on viewing angles, the infrared emission of type-1 AGNs has diverse spectral energy distribution (SED) shapes that deviate substantially from the well-characterized quasar templates. Motivated by the commonly-seen UV-optical obscuration and the discovery of parsec-scale mid-IR polar dust emission in some nearby AGNs, we develop semi-empirical SED libraries for reddened type-1 AGNs built on the quasar intrinsic templates, assuming low-level extinction caused by an extended distribution of large dust grains. We demonstrate that this model can reproduce the n…
Using the X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the XMM-XXL north survey and the SDSS Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) spectroscopic follow-up of them, we compare the properties of X-ray unobscured and obscured broad-line AGN (BLAGN1 and BLAGN2; $N_\textrm{H}$below and above $10^{21.5}$ cm$^{-2}$), including their X-ray luminosity $L_X$, black hole mass, Eddington ratio $λ_{\textrm{Edd}}$, optical continuum and line features. We find that BLAGN2 have systematically larger broad line widths and hence apparently higher (lower) $M_{\textrm{BH}}$ ($λ_{\textrm{Edd}}$) than …
