We explored a sample of 545 local galaxies using data from the 3XMM-DR7 and SDSS-DR8 surveys. We carried out all analyses up to z\,$\sim$\,0.2, and we studied the relation between X/O flux ratio and accretion rate for different classes of active galaxies such as LINERs and Seyfert 2. We obtained a slight correlation between the two parameters if the whole sample of AGN is used. However, LINERs and Sy2 galaxies show different properties, slight correlation and slight anti-correlation, respectively. This could confirm that LINERs and Sy2 galaxies have different accretion efficiencies and maybe different accretion disc properties,as has been suggested previously.

The cosmological evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is important for understanding the mechanism of accretion onto supermassive black holes, and the related evolution of the host galaxy. In this work, we include objects with very low Eddington ratio (10^{-3} - 10^{-2}) in an evolution scenario, and compare the results with the observed local distribution of black holes. We test several possibilities for the AGN population, considering obscuration and dependence with luminosity, and investigate the role of the Eddington ratio and radiative accretion efficiency on the shape of the evolved…
Powerful outflows with a broad range of properties (such as velocity, ionization, radial scale and mass loss rate) represent a key feature of active galactic nuclei (AGN), even more so since they have been simultaneously revealed also in individual objects. Here we revisit in a simple analytical framework the recent remarkable cases of two ultraluminous infrared quasars, IRAS F11119+3257 and Mrk 231, which allow us to investigate the physical connection between multi-phase AGN outflows across the ladder of distance from the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). We argue that any major deviat…
The growing evidence for energy-conserving outflows in powerful and luminous AGN supports the idea that high-velocity winds launched from the accretion disc evolve systematically after undergoing a shock with the ambient medium and that they are capable to expel enough mass and energy so as to produce feedback. This talk will give an overview of recent results on AGN ultra fast outflows, with focus on grating X-ray spectra of bright sources. I will review how UFO work, their observational properties and their relation with AGN outflows in other bands, what is their impact on the host galaxies …
There is a supermassive black hole, a gaseous accretion disk and compact star cluster in the center of active galactic nuclei, as known today. So the activity of AGN can be represented as the result of interaction of these three subsystems. In this work we investigate the dynamical interaction of a central star cluster surrounding a supermassive black hole and a central accretion disk. The dissipative force acting on stars in the disk leads to an asymmetry in the phase space distribution of the central star cluster due to the rotating accretion disk. In our work we present some results of Star…
The discovery of changing-look active galactic nuclei (CL AGNs), with appearance and disappearance of broad emission lines and/or with strong variation of line-of-sight column density within a few years, challenges the AGN unification model. We explore the physical mechanisms based on the X-ray spectral evolution for a sample of 15 CL AGNs. We find that the X-ray photon index, $Γ$, and Eddington-scaled X-ray luminosity, $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$, follow negative and positive correlations when $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$ is lower and higher than a critical value of $\sim 10^{-3}$. This …
We study the evidence for a connection between active galactic nuclei (AGN) fueling and star formation by investigating the relationship between the X-ray luminosities of AGN and the star formation rates (SFRs) of their host galaxies. We identify a sample of 309 AGN with $10^{41}<L_\mathrm{X}<10^{44} $ erg s$^{-1}$ at $0.2 < z < 1.2$ in the PRIMUS redshift survey. We find AGN in galaxies with a wide range of SFR at a given $L_X$. We do not find a significant correlation between SFR and the observed instantaneous $L_X$ for star forming AGN host galaxies. However, there is a weak but significant…
Recent observations show that the metallicity of the broad line region ($Z_{\rm BLR}$) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is solar-to-supersolar, which is positively correlated with the mass of supermassive black holes ($M_{\rm BH}$) and does not evolve with redshift up to $z \sim 7$. We revisit the $M_{\rm BH}-Z_{\rm BLR}$ correlation with more AGNs with $M_{\rm BH}\sim 10^{6-8} M_{\odot}$ and find that the positive correlation become flat in low-mass range. It is known that outer part of accretion disks is gravitationally unstable and can fragment into stars. Considering the star formation and…
The coevolution between supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies has been proposed for more than a decade, albeit with little direct evidence about black hole accretion activities regulating galaxy star formation at $z>1$. In this paper, we study the lifetimes of X-ray active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in $UV$-selected red sequence (RS), blue cloud (BC) and green valley (GV) galaxies, finding that AGN accretion activities are most prominent in GV galaxies at $z\sim1.5-2$, compared with RS and BC galaxies. We also compare AGN accretion timescales with typical color transition timesc…
AGN populations in the local universe: their alignment with the main-sequence, characteristics of their stellar populations, accretion efficiency, and the impact of AGN feedback
Exploring how radio-emitting active galactic nuclei (AGN) behave and evolve with time is critical for understanding how AGN feedback impacts galaxy evolution. In this work, we investigate the relationship between 1.4 GHz radio continuum AGN luminosity ($L^{\rm AGN}_{\rm 1.4}$), specific black hole accretion rate (s-BHAR, defined as the accretion luminosity relative to the galaxy stellar mass) and redshift, for a luminosity-complete sample of radio-selected AGN in the VLA COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project. The sample was originally selected from radio-continuum observations at 3 GHz, and includes abou…
In this chapter we discuss the X-ray radiation from relativistic accretion disks around supermassive black holes, supposed to exist in the centers of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Our focus is on the X-ray radiation, especially in the Fe K$α$ line which originates in the innermost parts of an accretion disk. Moreover, here we discuss some effects which can disturb the Fe K$α$ profile and cause its rapid and irregular variability, observed in the X-ray spectra of some AGN. We will pay attention to three such effects: perturbations in the disk emissivity, absorbtion by warm absorbers and gravita…
Compact radio active galactic nuclei (compact radio AGN) are compact ($\leq$ 20 kpc), powerful radio sources. Currently, the preferred scenario is that they are at the early stage of AGN evolution. At present, the research of compact radio AGN mainly focuses on the radio band, other bands have not been extensively studied. We present the systemic optical properties and X-ray emission studies for compact radio AGN, to investigate the accretion properties, AGN evolution and their X-ray origin. We find that compact radio AGN have various accretion modes indicated by the accretion rate analysis. I…
We study the relation of AGN accretion, star formation rate (SFR), and stellar mass (M$_*$) using a sample of $\approx$ 8600 star-forming galaxies up to z=2.5 selected with \textit{Herschel} imaging in the GOODS and COSMOS fields. For each of them we derive SFR and M$_*$, both corrected, when necessary, for emission from an active galactic nucleus (AGN), through the decomposition of their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). About 10 per cent of the sample are detected individually in \textit{Chandra} observations of the fields. For the rest of the sample we stack the X-ray maps to get averag…
We present a comparative study of active galactic nuclei (AGN) between galaxy pairs and isolated galaxies with the final data release of the MaNGA integral field spectroscopic survey. We build a sample of 391 kinematic galaxy pairs within the footprint of the survey and select AGN using the survey's spectra. We use the comoving volume densities of the AGN samples to quantify the effects that tidal interactions have on the triggering of nuclear accretion. Our hypothesis is that the pair sample contains AGN that are triggered by not only stochastic accretion but also tidally induced accretion an…
We investigate the relationship between black hole accretion and star formation in a sample of 453 $z\approx0.3$ type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We use available CO observations to demonstrate that the combination of nebular dust extinction and metallicity provides reliable estimates of the molecular gas mass even for the host galaxies of type 1 AGNs. Consistent with other similar but significantly smaller samples, we reaffirm the notion that powerful AGNs have comparable gas content as nearby star-forming galaxies and that AGN feedback does not deplete the host of cold gas instantaneous…
From Liu and Han (2014), the accretion-dominated jet power has a linear proportionality with the accretion rate, whereas the power law index is <=0.5 at lower accretion rate. Attributing the jet power in low accretion rate AGN to the black hole spin, it implies that the jet power has a flatter spectrum than the accretion-dominated jet versus the accretion rate. The black hole must be spinning rapidly for producing such jet power efficiently, and this may allow us to find high-spin black holes in the radio-loud low-luminosity AGN.
We investigate the Eddington ratio distribution of X-ray selected broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the redshift range 1.0<z<2.2, where the number density of AGNs peaks. Combining the optical and Subaru/FMOS near-infrared spectroscopy, we estimate black hole masses for broad-line AGNs in the Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S), Extended Chandra Deep Field-South (E-CDF-S), and the XMM-Newton Lockman Hole (XMM-LH) surveys. AGNs with similar black hole masses show a broad range of AGN bolometric luminosities, which are calculated from X-ray luminosities, indicating that the accretion rate o…
We derive analytical expressions for the mass flow rates in and from accretion discs, taking into account the Eddington limit. This allows us to connect the basic properties of outflows with those of the accretion flow. As an example, we derive the radial surface density distribution in the accretion disc of Mrk 231.
Magnetic field dragged from the galactic disk along with inflowing gas can provide vertical support to the geometrically and optically thick pc-scale torus in AGN. Using the Soloviev solution initially developed for Tokamaks we derive an analytical model for a rotating torus supported and confined by magnetic field. We further perform three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamics simulations of X-ray irradiated pc-scale magnetized tori. We follow the time evolution and compare models which adopt initial conditions derived from our analytic model with simulations in which the initial magnetic flux is…
Representing simultaneous black hole accretion during a merger, binary active galactic nuclei (AGNs) could provide valuable observational constraints to models of galaxy mergers and AGN triggering. High-resolution radio interferometer imaging offers a promising method to identify a large and uniform sample of binary AGNs, because it probes a generic feature of nuclear activity and is free from dust obscuration. Our previous search yielded 52 strong candidates of kpc-scale binaries over the 92 deg$^2$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 area with 2"-resolution Very Large Array (VLA…
Accretion disc theory predicts that an AGN disc becomes self-gravitating and breaks up into stars at an outer radius $R_{\rm sg}$ ~ 12 light-days, with effectively no free parameter. We present evidence that the longer observed AGN light echoes are all close to 12d in the AGN rest frames. These observations give a stringent test of AGN disc theory. Further monitoring should offer insight into the formation angular momentum of the gas forming the disc. For distant AGN, observed lags significantly longer than 12d give lower limits on their redshifts.
Radio observations allow us to identify a wide range of active galactic nuclei (AGN), which play a significant role in the evolution of galaxies. Amongst AGN at low radio-luminosities is the 'radio-quiet' quasar (RQQ) population, but how they contribute to the total radio emission is under debate, with previous studies arguing that it is predominantly through star formation. In this talk, SVW summarised the results of recent papers on RQQs, including the use of far-infrared data to disentangle the radio emission from the AGN and that from star formation. This provides evidence that black-hole …
This paper estimates the specific accretion-rate distribution of AGN using a sample of 4821 X-ray sources from both deep and shallow surveys. The specific accretion-rate distribution is defined as the probability of a galaxy with a given stellar mass and redshift hosting an active nucleus with a certain specific accretion rate. We find that the probability of a galaxy hosting an AGN increases with decreasing specific accretion rate. There is evidence that this trend reverses at low specific accretion rates, $λ<10^{-4}-10^{-3}$ (in Eddington units). There is also a break close to the Eddington …
We use bulge-type classifications of 809 representative SDSS galaxies by Gadotti (2009) to classify a large sample of galaxies into real bulges (classical or elliptical) and pseudobulges using Random Forest. We use structural and stellar population predictors that can easily be measured without image decomposition. Multiple parameters such as the central mass density with 1 kpc, concentration index, Sérsic index and velocity dispersion do result in accurate bulge classifications when combined together. We classify $\sim 44,500$ face-on galaxies above stellar mass of 10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$ and red…
We present the accretion disk size estimates for a sample of 19 active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the optical $g$, $r$, and $i$ band light curves obtained from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey. All the AGN have reliable supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass estimates based on previous reverberation mapping measurements. The multi-band light curves are cross-correlated, and the reverberation lag is estimated using the Interpolated Cross-Correlation Function (ICCF) method and the Bayesian method using the {\sc javelin} code. As expected from the disk reprocessing arguments, the $g-r$ ba…
Observational arguments suggest that the growth phases of the supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei have a characteristic timescale $\sim 10^5$ yr. We show that this is the timescale expected in the chaotic accretion picture of black hole feeding, because of the effect of self-gravity in limiting the mass of any accretion disc feeding event.
The infrared Astronomical Satellite AKARI conducted deep ($\sim$ 0.4 deg$^2$) and wide ($\sim 5.4$ deg$^2$) surveys around the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) with its InfraRed Camera (IRC) with nine filters continuously covering the 2-25 $μ$m range. These photometric bands include three filters that fill the `Spitzer gap' between the wavelength coverages of IRAC and MIPS. This unique feature has enabled us to make sensitive mid-infrared detection of AGN candidates at z$\sim$ 1-2, based on the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting including hot dust emission in the AGN torus. This enables us to…
We map the co-eval growth of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes in detail by measuring the incidence of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in galaxies as a function of star formation rate (SFR) and redshift (to z~4). We combine large galaxy samples with deep Chandra X-ray imaging to measure the probability distribution of specific black hole accretion rates (LX relative to stellar mass) and derive robust AGN fractions and average specific accretion rates. First, we consider galaxies along the main sequence of star formation. We find a linear correlation between the average SFR and b…
In large scale cosmological hydrodynamic simulations simplified sub-grid models for gas accretion onto black holes and AGN feedback are commonly used. Such models typically depend on various free parameters, which are not well constrained. We present a new advanced model containing a more detailed description of AGN feedback, where those parameters reflect the results of recent observations. The model takes the dependency of these parameters on the black hole properties into account and describes a continuous transition between the feedback processes acting in the so-called radio-mode and quas…
Research over the past decade has shown diminishing empirical evidence for major galaxy mergers being a dominating or even important mechanism for the growth of supermassive black holes in galaxies and the triggering of optically or X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGN). We here for the first time test whether such a connection exists at least in the most plausible part of parameter space for this mechanism: the highest specific accretion rate broad-line AGNs at the peak epoch of black hole activity around z = 2. To that end we examine 21 galaxies hosting a high accreting black hole (L/L…
The Broad Line Region of Active Galactic Nuclei is characterized by broad Balmer emission lines in their optical spectra. The broad Balmer emission lines are found to be asymmetric, some blue sided and others red sided in their asymmetry. One of the components behind the asymmetry is thought to be an accretion disk wind. We probe the accretion disk wind using the broad balmer emission line profiles. This asymmetry of the broad balma emission line profiles is measured in velocity space after a measurement of the line shift at percentiles from 0, in increaments of 10, up to 90. In addition, the …
The Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources, Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio sources, and High Frequency Peakers (HFP) radio sources are thought to be young radio AGNs, at the early stage of AGN evolution. We investigated the optical properties of the largest sample of 126 young radio AGNs based on the spectra in SDSS DR12. We find the black hole masses $M_{\rm BH}$ range from $10^{7.32}$ to $10^{9.84}$ $\rm M_{sun}$, and the Eddington ratios $R_{\rm edd}$ vary from $10^{-4.93}$ to $10^{0.37}$, suggesting that young radio AGNs have various accretion activities and not all are accreting at h…
Pouliasis et al (2022b) explored star formation rates, black hole accretion rates, and stellar mass of active galaxies at redshift above 3.5, uncovering a leveling off of the star formation rate at high stellar mass, which they consider to be evidence of AGN feedback. Their data shows that as AGN approach the flattening of the curve in the star formation rate - stellar mass plane, the accretion rates begin to drop. We describe the nature of the AGN feedback responsible for this in terms of powerful FRII jets enhancing star formation rates but eventually also triggering a shift in accretion fro…
We present the results of recent studies on the co-evolution of galaxies and the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) using Herschel far-infrared and Chandra X-ray observations in the Boötes survey region. For a sample of star-forming (SF) galaxies, we find a strong correlation between galactic star formation rate and the average SMBH accretion rate in SF galaxies. Recent studies have shown that star formation and AGN accretion are only weakly correlated for individual AGN, but this may be due to the short variability timescale of AGN relative to star formation. Averaging over the full AGN populat…
Recent models of super-massive black hole (SMBH) and host galaxy joint evolution predict the presence of a key phase where accretion, traced by obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) emission, is coupled with powerful star formation. Then feedback processes likely self-regulate the SMBH growth and quench the star-formation activity. AGN in this important evolutionary phase have been revealed in the last decade via surveys at different wavelengths. On the one hand, moderate-to-deep X-ray surveys have allowed a systematic search for heavily obscured AGN, up to very high redshifts (z~5). On the ot…
From a Chandra sample of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in nearby galaxies, we find that for low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs), either the intrinsic absorption column density, or the fraction of absorbed AGNs, positively scales with the Eddington ratio for $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} \lesssim 10^{-2}$. Such a behavior, along with the softness of the X-ray spectrum at low luminosities, is in good agreement with the picture that they are powered by hot accretion flows surrounding supermassive black holes. Numerical simulations find that outflows are inevitable with hot accretion flows, and the outflow ra…
Cool outflows are now commonly observed in galaxies, but their physical origin and driving mechanism remain unclear. Active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback can potentially accelerate cool galactic outflows via cosmic rays (CR) and radiation pressure on dust. Here we investigate the relative importance of CR and radiation feedback in AGNs, and we analyse the physical conditions for outflow launching as a function of the black hole accretion flow mode. We assume CRs from AGN jet origin and consider the analogy with Galactic X-ray binaries, whereby the jet is prominent at low accretion rates (har…
If the atmospheric density $ρ_{atm}$ in the accretion disk of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) is sufficiently low, scattering in the atmosphere can produce a non-blackbody emergent spectrum. For a given bolometric luminosity, at ultraviolet and optical wavelengths such disks have lower fluxes and apparently larger sizes as compared to disks that emit as blackbodies. We show that models in which $ρ_{\rm atm}$ is a sufficiently low fixed fraction of the interior density $ρ$ can match the AGN STORM observations of NGC 5548 but produce disk spectral energy distributions that peak at shorter wavel…
Several processes may limit the accretion rate onto a super-massive black hole (SMBH). Two processes that are commonly considered (e.g., for sub-grid prescriptions) are Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion and the Eddington limit. A third one is AGN wind feedback. It has been long suggested that such a wind feedback regulates the final SMBH mass, however, it has been shown recently that AGN winds can also regulate the average accretion rate at a level consistent with observations of high redshift AGNs. In this paper we study the effect of wind feedback on the accretion rate using 2D, high resolutio…
The majority of gravitational wave (GW) events detected so far by LIGO/Virgo originate from binary black hole (BBH) mergers. Among the different binary evolution paths, the merger of BBHs in accretion discs of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is a possible source of GW detections. We consider an idealised analytical model of the orbital evolution of BBHs embedded in an AGN accretion disc. In this framework, the disc-binary interaction increases the orbital eccentricity and decreases the orbital separation, driving the BBH into a regime where GW emission eventually leads to coalescence. We compute…
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have long been observed to "twinkle" (i.e., their brightness varies with time) on timescales from days to years in the UV/optical bands. Such AGN UV/optical variability is essential for probing the physics of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), the accretion disk, and the broad-line region. Here we show that the temperature fluctuations of an AGN accretion disk, which is magnetically coupled with the corona, can account for observed high-quality AGN optical light curves. We calculate the temperature fluctuations by considering the gas physics of the accreted matter …
15 years of XMM-Newton observations have established that ultra-fast, highly ionized winds are common in radio-quiet AGN. A simple theory of Eddington-limited accretion correctly predicts the typical velocity (~0.1c) and high ionization of such winds, with observed flow energy capable of ejecting star-forming gas. With a recent extended XMM-Newton observation of the archetypal UFO, PG1211+143, revealing a more complex flow pattern, we suggest that targetted observations over the next decade offer unique potential for probing the inner accretion disc structure and SMBH growth.
We study the interaction of feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) and a multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM), in simulations including explicit stellar feedback, multi-phase cooling, accretion-disk winds, and Compton heating. We examine radii ~0.1-100 pc around a black hole (BH), where the accretion rate onto the BH is determined and where AGN-powered winds and radiation couple to the ISM. We conclude: (1) The BH accretion rate is determined by exchange of angular momentum between gas and stars in gravitational instabilities. This produces accretion rates ~0.03-1 Msun/yr, sufficient to p…
Black hole systems, comprised of a black hole, accretion disk, and collimated outflow are studied here. Three AGN samples including 753 AGN, and 102 measurements of 4 GBH are studied. Applying the theoretical considerations described by Daly (2016), general expressions for the black hole spin function and accretion disk magnetic field strength are presented and applied to obtain the black hole spin function, spin, and accretion disk magnetic field strength in dimensionless and physical units for each source. Relatively high spin values are obtained; spin functions indicate typical spin values …
We examine the contribution of high-redshift (z>6) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to cosmic hydrogen reionization, by tracing the growth and ionizing output of the first generation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Our calculations are anchored to the observed population of z~6 quasars, and trace back the evolving spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the accretion flows that power these early AGNs and consider a variety of growth histories, including super-Eddington accretion. Compared to a fixed-shape SED, the evolving thin disks can produce ionizing radiation that is higher by up to ~80…
Binary black hole (BBH) mergers are the primary sources of gravitational wave (GW) events detected by LIGO/Virgo. Binary black holes embedded in the accretion discs of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are possible candidates for such GW events. We develop an idealised analytic model for the orbital evolution of BBHs in AGN accretion discs by combining the evolution equations of disc-binary interaction and GW inspiral. We investigate the coupled `disc+GW'-driven evolution of BBHs transitioning from the disc-driven regime at large orbital separations into the GW-driven regime at small separations. I…
Cosmic reionization put an end to the dark ages that came after the recombination era. Observations seem to favor the scenario where massive stars generating photons in low-mass galaxies were responsible for the bulk of reionization. Even though a possible contribution from accretion disks of active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been widely considered, they are currently thought to have had a minor role in reionization. Our aim is to study the possibility that AGN contributed to reionization not only through their accretion disks, but also through ionizing photons coming from the AGN jets interact…
An interesting feature in active galactic nuclei (AGN) accreting at low rate is the weakness of the reflection features in their X-ray spectra, which can result from the gradual disappearance of the torus with decreasing accretion rates. It has been suggested that low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) would have a different reflector configuration compared with high luminosity AGN, either covering a smaller fraction of the sky or simply having less material. Additionally, we note that the determination of the spectral index ($Γ$) and the cut-off energy of the primary power-law emission is affected by the…
Accretion in the nuclei of active galaxies may occur chaotically. This can produce accretion discs which are counter-rotating or strongly misaligned with respect to the spin of the central supermassive black hole (SMBH), or the axis of a close SMBH binary. Accordingly we consider the cancellation of angular momentum in accretion discs with a significant change of plane (tilt) between inner and outer parts. We estimate analytically the maximum accretion rate through such discs and compare this with the results of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. These suggest that accretion ra…
The wide-area XMM-XXL X-ray survey is used to explore the fraction of obscured AGN at high accretion luminosities, $L_X (\rm 2-10 \, keV) > 10^{44} \, erg \,s ^{-1}$, and out to redshift $z\approx1.5$. The sample covers an area of about $\rm14\,deg^2$ and provides constraints on the space density of powerful AGN over a wide range of neutral hydrogen column densities extending beyond the Compton-thick limit, $\rm N_H\approx10^{24}\,cm^{-2}$. The fraction of obscured Compton-thin ($\rm N_H=10^{22}-10^{24}\,cm^{-2}$) AGN is estimated to be $\approx0.35$ for luminosities $L_X(\rm 2-10\,keV)>10^{44…
Large extragalactic surveys allow us to trace, in a statistical sense, how supermassive black holes, their host galaxies, and their dark matter halos evolve together over cosmic time, and so explore the consequences of AGN feedback on galaxy evolution. Recent studies have found significant links between the accretion states of black holes and galaxy stellar populations, local environments, and obscuration by gas and dust. This article describes some recent results and shows how such studies may provide new constraints on models of the co-evolution of galaxies and their central SMBHs. Finally, …
The cosmic star formation rate is observed to drop sharply after redshift z=2. We use a large, cosmological, smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation to investigate how this decline is related to the evolution of gas accretion and to outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN). We find that the drop in the star formation rate follows a corresponding decline in the global cold-mode accretion rate density onto haloes, but with a delay of order the gas consumption time scale in the interstellar medium. Here we define cold-mode (hot-mode) accretion as gas that is accreted and whose temperatu…
Apart from regular, low-level stochastic variability, some AGN occasionally show exceptionally large changes in the luminosity, spectral shape, and/or X-ray absorption. The most notable are the changes of the spectral type when the source classified as a Seyfert 1 becomes a Seyfert 2 galaxy or vice versa. Thus a name was coined of 'Changing-Look AGN' (CL AGN). The origin of this phenomenon is still unknown, but for most of the sources, there are strong arguments in favor of the intrinsic changes. Understanding the nature of such rapid changes is a challenge to the models of black hole accretio…
