Cosmic reionization put an end to the dark ages that came after the recombination era. Observations seem to favor the scenario where massive stars generating photons in low-mass galaxies were responsible for the bulk of reionization. Even though a possible contribution from accretion disks of active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been widely considered, they are currently thought to have had a minor role in reionization. Our aim is to study the possibility that AGN contributed to reionization not only through their accretion disks, but also through ionizing photons coming from the AGN jets interacting with the IGM. We adopt an empirically derived AGN luminosity function at $z\simeq6$, use X-ray observations to correct it for the presence of obscured sources, and estimate the density of jetted AGN. We then use analytical calculations to derive the fraction of jet energy that goes into ionizing photons. Finally, we compute the contribution of AGN jets to the H II volume filling factor at redshifts $z\simeq15-5$. We show that the contribution of the AGN jet lobes to the reionization of the Universe at $z\sim6$ might have been as high as $\gtrsim 10$\% of that of star-forming galaxies, under the most favorable conditions of jetted and obscuration fraction. The contribution of AGN to the reionization, while most likely not dominant, could have been higher than previously assumed, thanks to the radiation originated in the jet lobes.
The reionization of the Universe ends the dark ages that started after the recombination era. In the case of H, reionization finishes around $z\sim 6$. Faint star-forming galaxies are the best candidate sources of the H-ionizing radiation, although active galactic nuclei may have also contributed. We have explored whether the termination regions of the jets from active galactic nuclei may have contributed significantly to the ionization of H in the late reionization epoch, around $z\sim 6-7$. We assumed that, as it has been proposed, active galactic nuclei at $z\sim 6$ may have presented a hig…
Next-generation 21cm observations will enable imaging of reionization on very large scales. These images will contain more astrophysical and cosmological information than the power spectrum, and hence providing an alternative way to constrain the contribution of different reionizing sources populations to cosmic reionization. Using Convolutional Neural Networks, we present a simple network architecture that is sufficient to discriminate between Galaxy-dominated versus AGN-dominated models, even in the presence of simulated noise from different experiments such as the HERA and SKA.
In this paper, we study the effects of a recent drop in star formation rate (SFR) on the spectra of epoch of reionization (EoR) galaxies, and the resulting degeneracy with the spectral features produced by extreme Lyman continuum leakage. In order to study these effects in the wavelength range relevant for the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we utilize synthetic spectra of simulated EoR galaxies from cosmological simulations together with synthetic spectra of partially quenched mock galaxies. We find that rapid declines in the SFR of EoR galaxies could seriously affect the applicab…
Feedback by Active Galactic Nuclei is often divided into quasar and radio mode, powered by radiation or radio jets, respectively. Both are fundamental in galaxy evolution, especially in late-type galaxies, as shown by cosmological simulations and observations of jet-ISM interactions in these systems. We compare AGN feedback by radiation and by collimated jets through a suite of simulations, in which a central AGN interacts with a clumpy, fractal galactic disc. We test AGN of $10^{43}$ and $10^{46}$ erg/s, considering jets perpendicular or parallel to the disc. Mechanical jets drive the more po…
We present the discovery of the radio-loud quasar PSO J352.4034-15.3373 at z=5.84 pm 0.02. This quasar is the radio brightest source known, by an order of magnitude, at z~6 with a flux density in the range of 8-100 mJy from 3GHz to 230MHz and a radio loudness parameter R>~1000. This source provides an unprecedented opportunity to study powerful jets and radio-mode feedback at the highest redshifts, and presents the first real chance to probe deep into the neutral intergalactic medium by detecting 21 cm absorption at the end of cosmic reionization.
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and star-forming galaxies are leading candidates for being the luminous sources that reionized our Universe. Next-generation 21cm surveys are promising to break degeneracies between a broad range of reionization models, hence revealing the nature of the source population. While many current efforts are focused on a measurement of the 21cm power spectrum, some surveys will also image the 21cm field during reionization. This provides further information with which to determine the nature of reionizing sources. We create a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that is ef…
In this work we investigate the dependence of the escape fraction of ionizing photons, $f_{\rm esc}$, on various galaxy and host halo properties during the epoch of reionization. We post-process the TNG50 magneto-hydrodynamical simulation from the IllustrisTNG project using the 3D multi-frequency radiative transfer code CRASH. Our work covers the stellar mass range $10^6 \lesssim M_\star/{\rm M_\odot} \lesssim 10^8$ at redshifts $6 < z < 10$. Adopting an unresolved, cloud-scale escape fraction parameter of unity, the halo escape fraction $f_{\rm esc}$ increases with mass from $\sim 0.3$ at $M_…
Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are generally believed to be radio-quiet Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with relatively less-massive (10$^{5}$$-$10$^{8}$~M$_{\odot}$) Super-Massive Black Holes (SMBH). Using the FIRST radio detections of hitherto the largest sample of 11101 optically-selected NLS1s we find a rather uncommon population of 55 NLS1s with Kiloparsec-Scale Radio structures (KSRs). We note that the number of NLS1s with KSRs found in our study is only a lower limit considering the effects of sensitivity, spatial resolution and projection, and hence, the number of NLS1s with KSRs …
The most luminous galaxies at high-redshift are generally considered to be hosted in massive dark-matter halos of comparable number density, hence residing at the center of overdensities/protoclusters. We assess the validity of this assumption by investigating the clustering around the brightest galaxies populating the cosmic web at redshift $z\sim8-9$ through a combination of semi-analytic modeling and Monte Carlo simulations of mock Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 observations. The innovative aspect of our approach is the inclusion of a log-normal scatter parameter $Σ$ in the galaxy luminosity v…
Jet feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is one of the most promising mechanisms for suppressing cooling flows in cool-core clusters. However, the composition of AGN jets and bubbles remains uncertain; they could be thermally dominated, or dominated by cosmic-ray proton (CRp), cosmic-ray electron (CRe), or magnetic energy. In this work, we investigate the evolution and feedback effects of CRp and CRe dominated jets by conducting 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of AGN jet-inflated bubbles in the intracluster medium using the FLASH code. We present the evolution of their energies, dynam…

We present an investigation of the low-frequency radio and ultraviolet properties of a sample of $\simeq$10,500 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14, observed as part of the first data release of the Low-Frequency-Array Two-metre Sky Survey. The quasars have redshifts $1.5 < z < 3.5$ and luminosities $44.6 < \log(L_{\text{bol}}/\text{erg s}^{-1}) < 47.2$. We employ ultraviolet spectral reconstructions based on an independent component analysis to parametrize the CIV$λ$1549-emission line that is used to infer the strength of accretion disc winds, and the HeII$λ$1640 line, a…

In recent years, several Radio-Loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RL-NLS1) possessing relativistic jets have come into attention with their detections in Very Large Baseline Array (VLBA) and in $γ$-ray observations. In this paper we attempt to understand the nature of radio-jets in NLS1s by examining the kpc-scale radio properties of, hitherto, the largest sample of 11101 optically-selected NLS1s. Using 1.4 GHz FIRST, 1.4 GHz NVSS, 327 MHz WENNS, and 150 MHz TGSS catalogues we find the radio-detection of merely $\sim$ 4.5 per cent (498/11101) NLS1s, with majority (407/498 $\sim$ 81.7 per cen…
The fastest molecular component to the protostellar outflows -- extremely high-velocity (EHV) molecular jets -- are still puzzling since they are seen only rarely. The first aim is to analyze the interaction between the EHV jet and the slow outflow by comparing their outflow force content. The second aim is to analyze the chemical composition of the different outflow velocity components and to reveal the spatial location of molecules. ALMA 3 mm and 1.3 mm observations of five outflow sources at 130 -- 260 au resolution in the Serpens Main cloud are presented. Observations of CO, SiO, H$_2$CO a…
