We study the quantitative properties of Lipschitz mappings from Euclidean spaces into metric spaces. We prove that it is always possible to decompose the domain of such a mapping into pieces on which the mapping "behaves like a projection mapping" along with a "garbage set" that is arbitrarily small in an appropriate sense. Moreover, our control is quantitative, i.e., independent of both the particular mapping and the metric space it maps into. This improves a theorem of Azzam-Schul from the paper "Hard Sard", and answers a question left open in that paper. The proof uses ideas of quantitative differentiation, as well as a detailed study of how to supplement Lipschitz mappings by additional coordinates to form bi-Lipschitz mappings.
Given a Lipschitz map $f$ from a cube into a metric space, we find several equivalent conditions for $f$ to have a Lipschitz factorization through a metric tree. As an application we prove a recent conjecture of David and Schul. The techniques developed for the proof of the factorization result yield several other new and seemingly unrelated results. We prove that if $f$ is a Lipschitz mapping from an open set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ onto a metric space $X$, then the topological dimension of $X$ equals $n$ if and only if $X$ has positive $n$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. We also prove an area formu…
Wenger and Young proved that the pair $(\mathbb{R}^m,\mathbb{H}^n)$ has the Lipschitz extension property for $m \leq n$ where $\mathbb{H}^n$ is the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group. That is, for some $C>0$, any $L$-Lipschitz map from a subset of $\mathbb{R}^m$ into $\mathbb{H}^n$ can be extended to a $CL$-Lipschitz mapping on $\mathbb{R}^m$. In this paper, we construct Sobolev extensions of such Lipschitz mappings with no restriction on the dimension $m$. We prove that any Lipschitz mapping from a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}^m$ into $\mathbb{H}^n$ may be extended to a Sobolev mapping on any b…
Consider a mapping $f\colon X\to Y$ between two metric measure spaces. We study generalized versions of the local Lipschitz number $\mathrm{Lip} f$, as well as of the distortion number $H_f$ that is used to define quasiconformal mappings. Using these, we give sufficient conditions for $f$ being a BV mapping $f\in BV_{\mathrm{loc}}(X;Y)$ or a Newton-Sobolev mapping $f\in N_{\mathrm{loc}}^{1,p}(X;Y)$, with $1\le p<\infty$.
We prove that the "slit carpet" introduced by Merenkov does not admit a bi-Lipschitz embedding into any uniformly convex Banach space. In particular, this includes any Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, but also spaces such as $L^p$ for $p \in (1,\infty)$. This resolves Question 8 in the 1997 list by Heinonen and Semmes.
A well-known class of questions asks the following: If $X$ and $Y$ are metric measure spaces and $f:X\rightarrow Y$ is a Lipschitz mapping whose image has positive measure, then must $f$ have large pieces on which it is bi-Lipschitz? Building on methods of David (who is not the present author) and Semmes, we answer this question in the affirmative for Lipschitz mappings between certain types of Ahlfors $s$-regular, topological $d$-manifolds. In general, these manifolds need not be bi-Lipschitz embeddable in any Euclidean space. To prove the result, we use some facts on the Gromov-Hausdorff con…
This paper deals with the study of parameter dependence of extensions of Lipschitz mappings from the point of view of continuity. We show that if assuming appropriate curvature bounds for the spaces, the multivalued extension operators that assign to every nonexpansive (resp. Lipschitz) mapping all its nonexpansive extensions (resp. Lipschitz extensions with the same Lipschitz constant) are lower semi-continuous and admit continuous selections. Moreover, we prove that Lipschitz mappings can be extended continuously even when imposing the condition that the image of the extension belongs to the…
In this article the authors prove strong stability of the set of all Chebyshev centres of the bounded closed subset of the metric space. We endow the set of all compacts of the space $l^n_{\infty}$ with Hausdorff metric and prove that the map which puts in correspondence to each compact of $l^n_{\infty}$ the set of its Chebyshev centres is Lipshitz.
We prove that every Lipschitz function from a subset of a locally compact length space to a metric tree has a unique absolutely minimal Lipschitz extension (AMLE). We relate these extensions to a stochastic game called {\bf Politics} - a generalization of a game called {\bf Tug of War} that has been used in \cite{PSSW09} to study real-valued AMLEs.
The purpose of this note is to point out a simple consequence of some earlier work of the authors, "Hard Sard: Quantitative implicit function and extension theorems for Lipschitz maps". For $f$, a Lipschitz function from a Euclidean space into a metric space, we give quantitative estimates for how often the pullback of the metric under $f$ is approximately a seminorm. This is a quantitative version of Kirchheim's metric differentiation result from 1994. Our result is in the form of a Carleson-type estimate.
We construct bi-Lipschitz embeddings into Euclidean space for manifolds and orbifolds of bounded diameter and curvature. The distortion and dimension of such embeddings is bounded by diameter, curvature and dimension alone. Our results also apply for bounded subsets of complete Riemannian manifolds, and complete flat and elliptic orbifolds. Our approach is based on analysing the structure of a bounded curvature manifold at various scales by specializing methods from collapsing theory to a certain class of model spaces.
We prove that the regular $n\times n$ square grid of points in the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$ cannot be recovered from an arbitrary $n^{2}$-element subset of $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$ via a mapping with prescribed Lipschitz constant (independent of $n$). This answers negatively a question of Feige from 2002. Our resolution of Feige's question takes place largely in a continuous setting and is based on some new results for Lipschitz mappings falling into two broad areas of interest, which we study independently. Firstly the present work contains a detailed investigation of Lipschitz regular mappin…
We prove a quantitative version of the following statement. Given a Lipschitz function f from the k-dimensional unit cube into a general metric space, one can decomposed f into a finite number of BiLipschitz functions f|_{F_i} so that the k-Hausdorff content of f([0,1]^k\setminus \cup F_i) is small. We thus generalize a theorem of P. Jones (1988) from the setting of R^d to the setting of a general metric space. This positively answers problem 11.13 in ``Fractured Fractals and Broken Dreams" by G. David and S. Semmes, or equivalently, question 9 from ``Thirty-three yes or no questions about map…
For two functions $f,g:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}$ a mapping $ψ:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}^n$ is said to be a $\textit{mapping from $f$ to $g$}$ if it is a bijection and $f(z)=g(ψ(z))$ for every $z\in\{0,1\}^n$. In this paper we study Lipschitz mappings between boolean functions. Our first result gives a construction of a $C$-Lipschitz mapping from the ${\sf Majority}$ function to the ${\sf Dictator}$ function for some universal constant $C$. On the other hand, there is no $n/2$-Lipschitz mapping in the other direction, namely from the ${\sf Dictator}$ function to the ${\sf Majority}$ function. This answers…
We prove a global implicit function theorem. In particular we show that any Lipschitz map $f:\bR^n\times \bR^m\to\bR^n$ (with $n$-dim. image) can be precomposed with a bi-Lipschitz map $\bar{g}:\bR^n\times \bR^m\to \bR^n\times \bR^m$ such that $f\circ \bar{g}$ will satisfy, when we restrict to a large portion of the domain $E\subset \bR^n\times \bR^m$, that $f\circ \bar{g}$ is bi-Lipschitz in the first coordinate, and constant in the second coordinate. Geometrically speaking, the map $\bar{g}$ distorts $\bR^{n+m}$ in a controlled manner, so that the fibers of $f$ are straightened out. Furtherm…
We give a simple quantitative condition, involving the "mapping content" of Azzam--Schul, that implies that a Lipschitz map from a Euclidean space to a metric space must be close to factoring through a tree. Using results of Azzam--Schul and the present authors, this gives simple checkable conditions for a Lipschitz map to have a large piece of its domain on which it behaves like an orthogonal projection. The proof involves new lower bounds and continuity statements for mapping content, and relies on a "qualitative" version of the main theorem recently proven by Esmayli--Hajłasz.
We prove a Rademacher-type theorem for Lipschitz mappings from a subset of a Carnot group to a Banach homogeneous group, equipped with a suitably weakened Radon-Nikodym property. We provide a metric area formula that applies to these mappings and more generally to all almost everywhere metrically differentiable Lipschitz mappings defined on a Carnot group.
In a 2013 paper, Cheeger and Kleiner introduced a new type of dimension for metric spaces, the "Lipschitz dimension". We study the dimension-theoretic properties of Lipschitz dimension, including its behavior under Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, its (non-)invariance under various classes of mappings, and its relationship to the Nagata dimension and Cheeger's "analytic dimension". We compute the Lipschitz dimension of various natural spaces, including Carnot groups, snowflakes of Euclidean spaces, metric trees, and Sierpinski carpets. As corollaries, we obtain a short proof of a quasi-isometric …
The uniform disconnectedness is an important invariant property under bi-Lipschitz mapping, and the Assouad dimension $\dim _{A}X<1$ implies the uniform disconnectedness of $X$. According to quasi-Lipschitz mapping, we introduce the quasi-Assouad dimension $\dim _{qA}$ such that $\dim _{qA}X<1$ implies its quasi uniform disconnectedness. We obtain $\overline{\dim } _{B}X\leq \dim _{qA}X\leq \dim _{A}X$ and compute the quasi-Assouad dimension of Moran set.
We give a proof, based on Lipschitz quotient mappings, for the fact that limits of BLD-mappings between manifolds of bounded geometry are BLD. Furthermore we show that such mappings share some properties of covering maps and especially have no asymptotic values.
We prove a quantitative bi-Lipschitz nonembedding theorem for the Heisenberg group with its Carnot-Carathéodory metric and apply it to give a lower bound on the integrality gap of the Goemans-Linial semidefinite relaxation of the Sparsest Cut problem.
We establish new approximation results, in the sense of Lusin, of Sobolev functions by Lipschitz ones, in some classes of non-doubling metric measure structures. Our proof technique relies upon estimates for heat semigroups and applies to Gaussian and $RCD(K, \infty)$ spaces. As a consequence, we obtain quantitative stability for regular Lagrangian flows in Gaussian settings.
We give a sufficient condition for a metric (homology) manifold to be locally bi-Lipschitz equivalent to an open subset in $\rn$. The condition is a Sobolev condition for a measurable coframe of flat 1-forms. In combination with an earlier work of D. Sullivan, our methods also yield an analytic characterization for smoothability of a Lipschitz manifold in terms of a Sobolev regularity for frames in a cotangent structure. In the proofs, we exploit the duality between flat chains and flat forms, and recently established differential analysis on metric measure spaces. When specialized to $\rn$, o…
