To date, investigations of carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) dependent effects have been limited to optical pulses with few cycles and high intensity, and have not been reported for other types of pulses. Optomechanical systems are shown to have the potential to go beyond these limits. We present an approach using optomechanics to extend the concept of the traditional CEP in the few-cycle regime to mechanical pulses and develop a two-step model to give a physical insight. By adding an auxiliary continuous optical field, we show that a CEP-dependent effect appears even in the multi-cycle regime of mechanical pulses. We obtain the approximated analytical solutions providing full understanding for these optomechanically induced CEP-dependent effects. In addition, our findings show that one can draw on the optomechanical interaction to revive the CEP-dependent effects on optical pulses with an arbitrary number of cycles and without specific intensity requirements. The effects of CEP, broadly extended to encompass few- and multi-cycle optical and mechanical pulses, may stimulate a variety of applications in the preparation of a CEP-stabilized pulse, the generation of ultrasonic pulses with a desired shape, the linear manipulation of optical combs, and more.
A novel scheme for stabilizing the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of low-repetition rate lasers was demonstrated using a 350 mJ, 14 fs Ti:Sapphire laser operating at 10 Hz. The influence of the CEP on the generation of a continuum in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) was observed.
The relationship between carrier envelope phase (CEP) slip of cavity soliton (CS) and pump phase detuning is derived analytically and numerically. To preserve the stability of CS, CEP slip always equals to the pump phase detuning. When CEP slip fails to follow the pump phase detuning, CS becomes unstable. The locking between CEP slip and pump phase detuning results in a scaling law for CS.
A light bullet is an extremely compressed in space and time wave packet of a few optical cycles, which is formed in the bulk transparent dielectric during femtosecond filamentation under anomalous group velocity dispersion. The effect of a carrier-envelope phase on the dynamics of the light bullet was demonstrated for the first time. The carrier-envelope phase change during a light bullet propagation causes synchronous oscillations of its spatial, temporal and energy parameters with the period decreasing with increasing carrier wavelength. The oscillation period of parameters of a near-single …
We present the first carrier-envelope phase stable chirped pulse amplifier (CPA) featuring high temporal contrast for relativistic intensity laser-plasma interactions at 1 kHz repetition rate. The laser is based on a double-CPA architecture including XPW filtering technique and a high-energy grism-based compressor. 8 mJ, 22 fs pulses are produced with 10-11 temporal contrast at -20 ps and a CEP drift of 240 mrad RMS.
We report supercontinuum generation by launching femtosecond Yb fiber laser pulses into a tapered single-mode fiber of 3 um core diameter. A spectrum of more than one octave, from 550 to 1400 nm, has been obtained with an output power of 1.3 W at a repetition rate of 250 MHz, corresponding to a coupling efficiency of up to 60%. By using a typical f-2f interferometer, the carrier envelope offset frequency was measured and found to have a signal-to-noise ratio of nearly 30 dB.
We propose a novel measurement technique that exploits the high coherent controllability of multi-comb systems, which corresponds to a generalization of the frequency control between the comb sources. In this paper, we particularly focus on the arbitrary relative carrier envelope phase (CEP) control through the relative offset frequency of two combs. We successfully demonstrate polarization-modulated comb generation and its coherent detection in the developed system. The proof-of-principle experiment indicates the potential of multi-comb systems, enabling a rapid, precise, and arbitrary cohere…
We report on the dependence of the frequency-to-intensity noise conversion in the locking of an ultrafast laser against a high-finesse optical resonator from the Carrier Envelope Offset (CEO) frequency. By a proper combination of the cavity finesse and laser CEO frequency it is possible to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio of the laser intensity trapped into the optical resonator. The theoretical description of the problem together with the numerical simulations and experimental results are presented with the aim of a strong suppression of the intensity fluctuations of the trapped laser field…
The evolution of THz waveform generated in air plasma provides a sensitive probe to the variation of the carrier envelope phase (CEP) of propagating intense few-cycle pulses. Our experimental observation and calculation reveal that the number and positions of the inversion of THz waveform are dependent on the initial CEP, which is near 0.5π constantly under varied input pulse energies when two inversions of THz waveform in air plasma become one. This provides a method of measuring the initial CEP in an accuracy that is only limited by the stability of the driving few-cycle pulses.
The ability to measure and control the carrier envelope phase (CEP) of few-cycle laser pulses is of paramount importance for both frequency metrology and attosecond science. Here, we present a phase meter relying on the CEP-dependent photocurrents induced by circularly polarized few-cycle pulses focused between electrodes in ambient air. The new device facilitates compact single-shot, CEP measurements under ambient conditions and promises CEP tagging at repetition rates orders of magnitude higher than most conventional CEP detection schemes as well as straightforward implementation at longer w…
Practical aspects of the robust method we recently proposed for producing few-cycle attosecond pulses with arbitrary waveform in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range are studied numerically. It is based on the undulator radiation of relativistic ultrathin electron layers produced by inverse free-electron laser process. Optimal conditions for nanobunching are given; attosecond pulse energy and waveform, and their stability are studied. For K=0.8 undulator parameter, carrier-envelope-phase stable pulses with >45 nJ energy and 80 as duration at 20 nm, and >250 nJ energy and 240 as duration at 6…
Controlling the carrier envelope phase (CEP) in mode-locked lasers over practically long timescales is crucial for real-world applications in ultrafast optics and precision metrology. We present a hybrid solution that combines a feed-forward technique to stabilize the phase offset in fast timescales and a feedback technique that addresses slowly varying sources of interference and locking bandwidth limitations associated with gain media with long upper-state lifetimes. We experimentally realize the hybrid stabilization system in an Er:Yb:glass mode-locked laser and demonstrate 75 hours of stab…
Based on the dual-chirped optical parametric amplification and type-I BiB$_3$O$_6$(BiBO) crystals, the generation of $>$100 mJ, 10.4 fs, 10 Hz, carrier-to-envelope phase (CEP)-stable laser pulses, which are centered at 1.7 $μ$m, is demonstrated; it produces a peak power of 10 TW. CEP-dependent high harmonic generation is implemented to confirm the sub-two-cycle pulse duration and CEP stabilization of infrared (IR) laser pulses. As far as we know, the obtained pulse energy and peak power represent the highest values for sub-two-cycle CEP-stable IR optical parametric amplification. Additionally,…
A robust method for producing half-cycle - few-cycle pulses in mid-infrared to extreme ultraviolet spectral ranges is proposed. It is based on coherent undulator radiation of relativistic ultrathin electron layers, which are produced by microbunching of ultrashort electron bunches by a TW power laser in a modulator undulator. According to our numerical calculations it is possible to generate as short as 10 nm long electron layers in a single-period modulator undulator having an undulator parameter of only K=0.25 and which is significantly shorter than the resonant period length. By using these…
We demonstrate that full temporal characterisation of few-cycle electromagnetic pulses, including retrieval of the carrier envelope phase (CEP), can be directly obtained from Frequency Resolved Optical Gating (FROG) techniques in which the interference between non-linear frequency mixing processes is resolved. We derive a framework for this scheme, defined Real Domain-FROG (ReD-FROG), as applied to the cases of interference between sum and difference frequency components and between fundamental and sum/difference frequency components. A successful numerical demonstration of ReD-FROG as applied…
Sharp metallic nanotapers irradiated with few-cycle laser pulses are emerging as a source of highly confined coherent electron wavepackets with attosecond duration and strong directivity. The possibility to steer, control or switch such electron wavepackets by light is expected to pave the way towards direct visualization of nanoplasmonic field dynamics and real-time probing of electron motion in solid state nanostructures. Such pulses can be generated by strong-field induced tunneling and acceleration of electrons in the near-field of sharp gold tapers within one half-cycle of the driving las…
We derive an analytical expression that describes the complete three-dimensional carrier-envelope phase (CEP) distribution of in the focal volume of ultrashort pulsed Gaussian beams focused by spherical mirrors or lenses. The focal CEP map depends on the so-called factor $g$ specifying the frequency-dependence of the beam width of the source few-cycle pulse, on its chirp and on the small chromatic aberration introduced by a lens without appreciably distorting or broadening the few-cycle pulse. We show how to tailor the CEP map of mirror-focused and lens-focused few-cycle pulses in order to pro…
We investigated the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stability of a hollow-fiber setup used for high-energy, few-cycle pulse generation. Saturation of the output pulse energy is observed at 0.6 mJ for a 260 um inner-diameter, 1 m long fiber, statically filled with neon, with the pressure adjusted to achieve an output spectrum capable of supporting sub-4fs pulses. The maximum output pulse energy can be increased to 0.8mJ by using either differential pumping, or circularly polarized input pulses. We observe the onset of an ionization-induced CEP instability, which does not increase beyond an input p…
We focus on the propagation properties of a single-cycle laser pulse through a two-level medium by numerically solving the full-wave Maxwell-Bloch equations. The counter-rotating terms in the spontaneous emission damping are included such that the equations of motion are slightly different from the conventional Bloch equations. The counter-rotating terms can considerably suppress the broadening of the pulse envelope and the decrease of the group velocity rooted from dispersion. Furthermore, for incident single-cycle pulses with envelope area 4$π$, the time-delay of the generated soliton pulse …
We report a novel quasi-phase matching technique for high-order harmonic generation in low-density gases. Numerical simulations show that in few-optical cycle pulsed Bessel beams it is possible to control the pulse envelope and phase velocities which in turn allows to control the carrier-envelope phase during propagation. The resulting oscillations in the peak intensity allow to phase-match the high-order harmonic generation process with a nearly two decade enhancement in the XUV power spectrum.
We present a carrier-envelope offset (CEO) stable ytterbium-doped fiber chirped-pulse amplification system employing the technology of coherent beam combining and delivering more than 1 kW of average power at a pulse repetition rate of 80 MHz. The CEO stability of the system is 220 mrad rms, characterized out-of-loop with an f-to-2f interferometer in a frequency offset range of 10 Hz to 20 MHz. The high-power amplification system boosts the average power of the CEO stable oscillator by five orders of magnitude while increasing the phase noise by only 100 mrad. No evidence of CEO noise deterior…
High-brightness sources of coherent and few-cycle-duration light waveforms with spectral coverage from the UV to the THz would offer unprecedented versatility and opportunities for a spectacular range of applications from bio-chemical sensing, to time-resolved and nonlinear spectroscopy, to attosecond light-wave electronics. Combinations of various sources with frequency conversion and supercontinuum generation can provide relatively large spectral coverage, but many applications require much broader spectral range and low-jitter synchronization for time-domain measurements. Here, we present a…
Non-perturbative and phase-sensitive light-matter interactions have led to the generation of attosecond pulses of light and the control electrical currents on the same timescale. Traditionally, probing these effects via high harmonic generation has involved complicated lasers and apparatuses to generate the few-cycle and high peak power pulses needed to obtain and measure spectra that are sensitive to the phase of the light wave. Instead, we show that nonlinear effects dependent on the carrier-envelope phase can be accessed in solid state crystals with simple low-energy frequency combs that we…
Carrier-envelope phase stabilization of optical pulses enables exquisitely precise measurements by way of direct optical-frequency synthesis, absolute optical-to-microwave phase conversion, and control of ultrafast waveforms. We report such phase stabilization for Kerr-microresonator frequency combs integrated on silicon chips, and verify their fractional-frequency inaccuracy at <3x10-16. Our work introduces an interlocked Kerr-comb configuration comprised of one silicon-nitride and one silica microresonator, which feature nearly harmonic repetition frequencies and can be generated with one la…
Optical-field emission from nanostructured solids such as subwavelength nanoantennas can be leveraged to create sub-femtosecond, PHz-scale electronics for optical-field detection. One application that is of particular interest is the detection of an incident optical pulse's carrier-envelope phase. Such carrier-envelope-phase detection requires few-cycle, broadband optical excitation where the resonant properties of the nanoantenna can strongly alter the response of the near field in time. Little quantitative investigation has been performed to understand how the geometry and resonant propertie…
We present a method to distinguish the high harmonics generated in individual half-cycle of the driving laser pulse by mixing a weak ultraviolet pulse, enabling one to observe the cutoff of each half-cycle harmonic. We show that the detail information of the driving laser pulse, including the laser intensity, pulse duration and carrier-envelope phase, can be {\it in situ} retrieved from the harmonic spectrogram. In addition, our results show that this method also distinguishes the half-cycle high harmonics for a pulse longer than 10 fs, suggesting a potential to extend the CEP measurement to t…

We report a newly designed mid-infrared-pump visible-probe measurement system, which can measure phase-sensitive responses to a mid-infrared pulse along the oscillating electromagnetic field. In this system, the pump light is a phase-locked mid-infrared pulse with temporal width of 100 fs, which is produced via difference frequency generation (DFG) from two idler pulses of two optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) that are excited by the same Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier. The probe pulse is a visible pulse with temporal width of 9 fs, and it is generated from a custom-built non-collinear …
Ultrafast control of electron dynamics in solid state systems has recently found particular attention. By increasing the electric field strength of laser pulses, the light-matter interaction in solids might turn from a perturbative into a novel non-perturbative regime, where interband transitions from the valence to the conduction band become strongly affected by intraband motion. We have demonstrated experimentally and numerically that this combined dynamics can be controlled in graphene with the electric field waveform of phase-stabilized few-cycle laser pulses. Here we show new experimental…
The availability of few-cycle optical pulses opens a window to physical phenomena occurring on the attosecond time scale. In order to take full advantage of such pulses, it is crucial to measure and stabilise their carrier-envelope (CE) phase, i.e., the phase difference between the carrier wave and the envelope function. We introduce a novel approach to determine the CE phase by down-conversion of the laser light to the terahertz (THz) frequency range via plasma generation in ambient air, an isotropic medium where optical rectification (down-conversion) in the forward direction is only possibl…
The carrier-envelope phase (CEP) plays an increasingly important role in precise frequency comb spectroscopy, all-optical atomic clocks, quantum science and technology, astronomy, space-borne-metrology, and strong-field science. Hitherto, it has been essentially assumed that CEP is strictly a temporal phenomenon. Here we introduce an approach for space-time calculation of the CEP in the spatially defined region of interest. We find a significant variation of CEP in the focal volume of refracting focusing elements and accurately calculate its value. We discuss the implications and importance of…
We theoretically study the carrier-envelope phase dependent inversion generated in a two-level system by excitation with a few-cycle pulse. Based on the invariance of the inversion under time reversal of the exciting field, parameters are introduced to characterize the phase sensitivity of the induced inversion. Linear and nonlinear phase effects are numerically studied for rectangular and sinc-shaped pulses. Furthermore, analytical results are obtained in the limits of weak fields as well as strong dephasing, and by nearly degenerate perturbation theory for sinusoidal excitation. The results …
High harmonic generation (HHG) is a versatile technique for probing ultrafast electron dynamics. While HHG is sensitive to the electronic properties of the target, HHG also depends on the waveform of the laser pulse. As is well known, (peak) positions, $ω$, in the high-harmonic spectrum can shift when the carrier envelope phase (CEP), $φ$ is varied. We derive formulae describing the corresponding parametric dependencies of CEP shifts; in particular, we have a transparent result for the (peak) shift, $dω/dφ= {-} 2 \bar{\mathfrak f}' ω/ω_0$, where $ω_0$ describes the fundamental frequency and $\…
In laser-wakefield acceleration, an ultra-intense laser pulse is focused into an underdense plasma in order to accelerate electrons to relativistic velocities. In most cases, the pulses consist of multiple optical cycles and the interaction is well described in the framework of the ponderomotive force where only the envelope of the laser has to be considered. But when using single-cycle pulses, the ponderomotive approximation breaks down, and the actual waveform of the laser has to be taken into account. In this paper, we use near-single cycle laser pulses to drive a laser-wakefield accelerato…
An intuitive physical mechanism for single attosecond pulse generation in multi-cycle pulse regime is proposed. We suggest that the continuum spectra of HHG can be controlled through the modulation of carrier wave, while keeping the multi-cycle envelope unchanged approximately. By increasing the time interval between the adjacent maximum return kinetic energy peaks, the kinetic energy of the side peaks will be apparently suppressed by the multi-cycle envelope. The photons with energies near the cutoff burst only at the pulse center with high coherence, which contribute to the generation of sin…
Few-cycle pulsed laser technology highlights the need for control and stabilization of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) for applications requiring shot-to-shot timing and phase consistency. This general requirement has been achieved successfully in a number of free space and fiber lasers via feedback and feed-forward methods. Expanding upon existing results, we demonstrate CEP stabilization through the feed-forward method applied to a SESAM mode-locked Er:Yb:glass laser at 1.55 um with a measured ultralow timing jitter of 2.9 as (1 Hz - 3 MHz) and long-term stabilization over a duration of eig…
We report on tunnel ionization of Xe by 2-cycle, intense, infrared laser pulses and its dependence on carrier-envelope-phase (CEP). At low values of optical field ($E$), the ionization yield is maximum for cos-like pulses with the dependence becoming stronger for higher charge states. At higher $E$-values, the CEP dependence either washes out or flips. A simple phenomenological model is developed that predicts and confirms the observed results. CEP effects are seen to persist for 8-cycle pulses. Unexpectedly, electron rescattering plays an unimportant role in the observed CEP dependence. Our r…
We demonstrate an active carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stabilization scheme for optical waveforms generated by difference-frequency mixing of two spectrally detuned and phase-correlated pulses. By performing ellipsometry with spectrally overlapping parts of two co-propagating near-infrared generation pulse trains, we stabilize their relative timing to 18 as. Consequently, we can lock the CEP of the generated mid-infrared (MIR) pulses with a remaining phase jitter below 30 mrad. Employing these pulses for high-harmonic generation in a bulk semiconductor validates our technique. This experiment r…
Two- and multi-dimensional spectroscopy is used in physics and chemistry to obtain structural and dynamical information that would otherwise be invisible by the projection into a one-dimensional data set such as a single emission or absorption spectrum. Here, we introduce a qualitatively new two-dimensional spectroscopy method by employing the carrier-envelope phase (CEP). Instead of measuring spectral vs. spectral information, the combined application of spectral interferometry and CEP control allows the measurement of otherwise inseparable temporal events on an attosecond time scale. As a sp…
Carrier envelope phase (CEP) stabilized pulses of intense 800 nm light of 5 fs duration are used to probe the dissociation dynamics of dications of isotopically-substituted water, HOD. HOD$^{2+}$ dissociates into either H$^+$ + OD$^+$ or D$^+$ + OH$^+$. The branching ratio for these two channels is CEP-dependent; the OD$^+$/OH$^+$ ratio (relative to that measured with CEP-unstabilized pulses) varies from 150% to over 300% at different CEP values, opening prospects of isotope-dependent control over molecular bond breakage. The kinetic energy released as HOD$^{2+}$ Coulomb explodes is also CEP-d…
Advancing table-top attosecond sources in brightness and pulse duration is of immense interest and importance for an expanding sphere of applications. Recent theoretical studies [New J. Phys., 22 093030 (2020)] have found that high-order frequency mixing (HFM) in a two-color laser field can be much more efficient than high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Here we study the attosecond properties of the coherent XUV generated via HFM analytically and numerically, focusing on the practically important case when one of the fields has much lower frequency and much lower intensity than the other one…

The impacts of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a long relativistic tightly-focused laser pulse on the dynamics of a counter-propagating electron beam have been investigated in the, so-called, electron reflection regime, requiring the Lorentz factor of the electron $γ$ to be approximately two orders of magnitudes lower than the dimensionless laser field parameter $ξ$. The electrons are reflected at the rising edge of the laser pulse due to the ponderomotive force of the focused laser beam, and an asymmetric electron angular distribution emerges along the laser polarization direction, which …
A proposal for a novel source of isolated attosecond XUV -- soft X-ray pulses with a well controlled carrier-envelope phase difference (CEP) is presented in the framework of nonlinear Thomson-backscattering. Based on the analytic solution of the Newton-Lorentz equations, the motion of a relativistic electron is calculated explicitly, for head-on collision with an intense fs laser pulse. By using the received formulae, the collective spectrum and the corresponding temporal shape of the radiation emitted by a mono-energetic electron bunch can be easily computed. For certain suitable and realisti…
Given the quasi-static nature of optical-field emission and the nontrivial dependence of the emission rate on the instantaneous electric field strength, the CEP-sensitive component of the emitted photocurrent is highly sensitive to the energy of the optical pulse, and should carry information about the underlying sub-cycle dynamics of electron emission. Here we examine CEP-sensitive photoemission from plasmonic gold nanoantennas excited with few-cycle optical pulses of increasing energy. We observe antiresonance-like features in the CEP-sensitive photocurrent; specifically, at a critical pulse…
Despite the current concentration on phase control in few-cycle pulses, it emerges that there exists a wide class of nonlinear optical interactions in which the carrier phase is essentially irrelevant, even for the shortest pulse profiles. Most parametric processes and most perturbative processes fall into this category, although others such as above threshold ionization (ATI) do not. In an envelope approach, the carrier oscillations are not part of the problem because they are removed at the outset. When they are reinstated at the end of the calculation, one is free to include arbitrary phase…
Carrier envelope phase (CEP) stabilized 5 fs and 22 fs pulses of intense 800 nm light are used to probe the strong-field ionization dynamics of multielectron entities, xenon and carbon disulfide. We compare ion yields obtained with and without CEP-stabilization: with 8-cycle (22 fs) pulses, Xe$^{6+}$ yields are suppressed (relative to Xe$^+$ yields) by between 30% and 50%, depending on phase, reflecting the phase dependence of non-sequential ionization and its contribution to the formation of higher charge states. On the other hand, ion yields for Xe$^{q+}$ ($q$=2-4) with CEP-stablized pulses …

We explore pump-probe high harmonic generation (HHG) from monolayer hexagonal-Boron-Nitride, where a terahertz pump excites coherent optical phonons that are subsequently probed by an intense infrared pulse that drives HHG. We find, through state-of-the-art ab-initio calculations, that the structure of the emission spectrum is attenuated by the presence of coherent phonons, and is no longer comprised of discrete harmonic orders, but rather of a continuous emission in the plateau region. The HHG yield strongly oscillates as a function of the pump-probe delay, corresponding to ultrafast changes …
Carrier-envelope phase (CEP) detection of ultrashort optical pulses and low-energy waveform field sampling have recently been demonstrated using direct time-domain methods that exploit optical-field photoemission from plasmonic nanoantennas. These devices make for compact and integratable solid-state detectors operating at optical frequency that work in ambient conditions and require minute pulse energies (picojoule-level). Applications include frequency-comb stabilization, visible to near-infrared time-domain spectroscopy, compact tools for attosecond science and metrology and, due to the hig…
Carrier wave shocking is studied using the Pseudo-Spectral Spatial Domain (PSSD) technique. We describe the shock detection diagnostics necessary for this numerical study, and verify them against theoretical shocking predictions for the dispersionless case. These predictions show Carrier Envelope Phase (CEP) and pulse bandwidth sensitivity in the single-cycle regime. The flexible dispersion management offered by PSSD enables us to independently control the linear and nonlinear dispersion. Customized dispersion profiles allow us to analyze the development of both carrier self-steepening and sho…
Driving laser wakefield acceleration with extremely short, near single-cycle laser pulses is crucial to the realisation of an electron source that can operate at kHz-repetition rate while relying on modest laser energy. It is also interesting from a fundamental point of view, as the ponderomotive approximation is no longer valid for such short pulses. Through particle-in-cell simulations, we show how the plasma response becomes asymmetric in the plane of laser polarization, and dependent on the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the laser pulse. For the case of self-injection, this in turn strong…
