We show the sensitivity of groomed jet substructure measurements to the finite resolution power of the QGP to disentangle multiple energetic partons, as produced by QCD jets, that traverse it simultaneously. We illustrate these effects by studying Soft Dropped observables within a hybrid strong/weak coupling model for jet-medium interactions. By analysing Monte-Carlo-generated jet data in heavy ion collisions, we show that the angular structure of these type of observables is sensitive to the value of the QGP resolution length.
The different modifications of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has not yet received a definitive answer from experiments. In particular, the relative sizes of the modification of quark and gluon jets differ between theoretical models. Therefore, a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. We perform a proof-of-concept study based on proton-proton and heavy-ion collision events from the \textsc{Pyquen} generator with stati…
We present an analysis of the role that the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) resolution length, the minimal distance by which two nearby colored charges in a jet must be separated such that they engage with the plasma independently, plays in understanding the modification of jet substructure due to interaction with QGP. We identify a set of observables that are sensitive to whether jets are quenched as if they are single energetic colored objects or whether the medium that quenches them has the ability to resolve the internal structure of the jet. Using the hybrid strong/weak coupling model, we find t…
We have implemented the LPM effect into a microscopic transport model with partonic degrees of freedom by following the algorithm of Zapp & Wiedemann. The Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect is a quantum interference process that modifies the emission of radiation in the presence of a dense medium. In QCD this results in a quadratic length dependence for radiative energy loss. This is an important effect for the modification of jets by their passage through the QGP. We verify the leading parton energy loss in the model against the leading order Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff-Zakharo…

In particular, the size of the modifications in the quark-gluon plasma differs between theoretical models. Therefore a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. Corroborating past results, I demonstrate the capability of a fully data-driven technique called topic modeling in separating quark and gluon contributions to …
The modification of jet substructure in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied using JETSCAPE, a publicly available software package containing a framework for Monte Carlo event generators. Multi-stage jet evolution in JETSCAPE provides an integrated description of jet quenching by combining multiple models, with each becoming active at a different stage of the parton shower evolution. Jet substructure modification due to different aspects of jet quenching is studied using jet shape and jet fragmentation observables. Various combinations of jet energy loss models are exploed, with medium…
We study inclusive jet suppression and modifications in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with a transport-based model. The model includes vacuum-like parton shower evolution at high-virtuality, a linearized transport for jet-medium interactions, and a simple ansatz for the jet-induced hydrodynamic response of the medium. Model parameters are calibrated to nuclear modification factors for inclusive hadron $R_{AA}^{h}$ and single inclusive jets $R_{AA}^{j}$ with cone size $R=0.4$ in 0-10% central Au-Au and Pb-Pb collisions measured at the RHIC and LHC. The calibrated model consistently describes the…
The jet quenching phenomenon in heavy ion collisions provides a strong evidence of the modification of parton shower in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Jet substructure observables can probe various aspects of the jet formation mechanism. They contain useful information about the QGP and allow us to study the medium properties in great details. Here we present theoretical calculations of jet shapes and cross sections in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at the LHC using soft-collinear effective theory, with Glauber gluon interactions in the medium. We find that resumming large logarithms in…
Jets produced by the initial hard scattering in heavy ion collision events lose energy due to interactions with the color-deconfined medium formed around them: the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Jet-medium interactions constitute an important theoretical and experimental field for studies of QGP, and various models with different assumptions have been proposed to describe them. A fair and direct comparison of these models requires that all other aspects of the simulation be fixed, which is achieved in this work by relying on the JETSCAPE framework. We employ JETSCAPE to directly and comprehensively…
The problem of entropy S and baryon number N_B conservation in phase transitions from deconfined phases (QGP and Q) to hadronic matter H is considered. It is shown that standard construction of both first order phase transitions, H-Q as well as Q-QGP implies a discontinuous structure of entropy per baryon S/N_B when crossing phase boundary; this results in impossibility of equilibrium transition from QGP to hadron gas. We follow the way suggested recently by H. Satz et al. for the same problem concerning direct transition H-QGP. They proposed a modification of bag pressure parameter B_{QGP} by…
QGP, a strongly coupled liquid when viewed at length scales of ${\cal O}(1/T)$, must reveal quark- and gluon-like quasi-particles when probed with sufficiently high momentum transfer, since QCD is asymptotically free. High energy jet partons traversing the droplet of QGP produced in a heavy ion collision can trigger these high-momentum exchanges with medium constituents and so have the potential to reveal the presence of such quasi-particles, a key step toward the experimental study of the microscopic structure of QGP. We implement this physics within the hybrid strong/weak coupling model whic…
Jet substructure observables are crucial for exploring the effects of the hot, dense medium and differentiating between quark and gluon jets. In this paper, we investigate the modification of jet shape by calculating the differential girth at LHC energies, ranging from pp to Pb--Pb collisions. The differential girth distribution exhibits a wave-like pattern, which offers a better explanation for the radial spreading of jet energy and large-angle radiation effects. We fit the differential girth distribution with a sine wave function to obtain the amplitude, angular frequency, initial phase, and…
We investigate top anti-top quark pair production in lead-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider with nucleon-nucleon center of mass energy of 5.5 TeV. Due to the very high temperature and energy density created in heavy ion collision, a new state of QCD matter known as Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is expected to be produced. Top decay products loose energy inside the QGP medium. Therefore, we also study the medium modifications of different kinematic distributions. We observe significant modification in the dijets and trijets invariant mass distributions. We also found that the peak position…
The striking suppression and modification patterns that are observed in jet observables measured in heavy-ion collisions with respect to the proton-proton baseline have the potential to constrain the spatio-temporal branching process of energetic partons in a dense QCD medium. The mechanism of jet energy loss is intricately associated with medium resolution of jet substructure fluctuations. This naturally affects the behavior of the suppression of jets at high-pT, inducing an explicit dependence on jet scales. In this contribution, we review recent work on using the insight from multi-parton q…
Modification of the hard jet substructure in terms of the Soft Drop jet grooming algorithm observables is studied for three different scenarios of jet quenching in a quark-gluon plasma: i) an explicit enhancement of the parton splitting functions, ii) increased soft gluon emissions induced by an in-medium virtuality gain, and iii) energy loss due to a drag force. Despite the fact that first two scenarios both correspond to a radiative energy loss mechanism and lead to similar modifications of parton showers, they are shown to have very different impacts on the momentum balance of hard subjets.…
$γ+$jet events provide a tomographic measurement of the medium formed in heavy ion collisions at LHC energies. Tagging events with a well identified high $p_{T}$ direct photon and measuring the correlation distribution of hadrons emitted oppositely to the photon, allows us to determine, with a good approximation, both the jet fragmentation function and the back-to-back azimuthal misalignement of the direct photon and the jet. Comparing these two observables measured in $pp$ collisions with the ones measured in $AA$ collisions will reveal the modifications of the jet structure induced by the me…
We study the phenomenon of jet quenching utilizing quark and gluon jet substructures as independent probes of heavy ion collisions. We exploit jet and subjet features to highlight differences between quark and gluon jets in vacuum and in a medium with the jet-quenching model implemented in JEWEL. We begin with a physics-motivated, multivariate analysis of jet substructure observables including the jet mass, the radial moments, the $p_T^D$ and the pixel multiplicity. In comparison, we employ state-of-the-art image-recognition techniques by training a deep convolutional neutral network on jet im…

The presence of a hot and dense medium, produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, is known to modify the parton shower evolution. Several observations of the resulting intra-jet activity show significant modifications of what can be considered as a medium-modified jet from a "vacuum" (proton-proton) reference. These modifications, generically known as jet quenching effects, are the result of the multiple interactions of the parton shower with the produced fast-evolving quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Recent efforts have tried to assess the time dependence of jet quenching effects, with pa…
In this article we employ the nuclear EMC effect to extract the parton distribution functions (PDFs) inside the Lead (Pb) and Gold (Au) nuclei. Extracted PDFs are utilized to obtain the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) ones, using the computing codes like Pythia 8 or MCFM-10. Through this procedure TMDPDFs for charm and bottom quarks in Au at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200\;GeV$, Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76\;TeV$ and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02\;TeV$ are calculated. To evaluate the validity of results and investigate the influence of nuclear EMC effect, the numerated TMDs are used as input to estimate heavy quar…
The description of the in-medium modifications of partonic showers has been at the forefront of current theoretical and experimental efforts in heavy-ion collisions. It provides a unique laboratory to extend our knowledge frontier of the theory of the strong interactions, and to assess the properties of the hot and dense medium (QGP) that is produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC. The theory of jet quenching, a commonly used alias for the modifications of the parton branching resulting from the interactions with the QGP, has been significantly developed over th…
QCD jets, produced copiously in heavy-ion collisions at LHC and also at RHIC, serve as probes of the dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Jet fragmentation in the medium is interesting in its own right and, in order to extract pertinent information about the QGP, it has to be well understood. We present a brief overview of the physics involved and argue that jet substructure observables provide new opportunities for understanding the nature of the modifications.
The CUJET Monte Carlo Jet Energy loss model is applied to predict the jet flavor, centrality and density dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ at RHIC and LHC. Running coupling effects due to combined $x$, $k_\perp$ and $q_\perp$ evolution are included for the first time in the dynamical DGLV opacity expansion framework and are shown to provide a natural dynamical QCD tomographic solution to the surprising transparency of the quark gluon plasma produced at LHC as suggested by $p_\perp>10$ GeV $R_{AA}$ data from ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS.
The production of charmonia in heavy-ion collisions is investigated within a kinetic theory framework simultaneously accounting for dissociation and regeneration processes in both quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and hadron-gas phases of the reaction. In-medium modifications of open-charm states (c-quarks, D-mesons) and the survival of J/psi mesons in the QGP are included as inferred from lattice QCD. Pertinent consequences on equilibrium charmonium abundances are evaluated and found to be especially relevant to explain the measured centrality dependence of the psi'/psi ratio at SPS. Predictions for r…
We study the flavor dependence of the medium modification factor $R_{pp}$ for $pp$ collisions for scenario with formation of a small-size quark-gluon plasma (QGP) for RHIC ($\sqrt{s}=0.2$ TeV) and LHC ($\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV) energies. We find that at $p_T\sim 10$ GeV the pion spectrum is suppressed by $\sim 20-30\,(25-35)$\% for RHIC (LHC), for $D$~($B$) mesons the suppression effect is smaller by a factor of $\sim 0.7-0.8$ ($0.5$). The flavor hierarchy $R_{pp}^π<R_{pp}^D<R_{pp}^B$ is held at $p_T\lesssim 20$ GeV for RHIC and at $p_T\lesssim 70$ GeV for LHC. This gives a sizeable reduction of th…
Jet modification in heavy-ion collisions is an important probe of the nature and structure of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in these collisions and also encodes information about how the wakes that jets excite in a droplet of QGP form and relax. However, in experiment, one cannot know what a particular jet in a heavy ion collision would have looked like without quenching, making it difficult to interpret measurements in terms of individual jet modification. The goal of this Monte Carlo study is to gain insight into the modification of jet observables using the hybrid strong/weak coupli…
Factorization underpins our ability to make predictions at the LHC, both in Monte Carlo simulations and direct calculations. An improved theoretical understanding of jet substructure can lead to calculations that can confront data and validate the Monte Carlo description of jets. We derive constraints on jet substructure algorithms from factorization, focusing on the broad class of jet observables where the soft and collinear dynamics of QCD dominate. A necessary condition for factorization is that the phase space constraints on soft and collinear dynamics for a given observable are independen…

In these proceedings, we report on recent results related to vector boson-tagged jet production in heavy ion collisions and the related modification of jet substructure, such as jet shapes and jet momentum sharing distributions. $Z^0$-tagging and $γ$-tagging of jets provides new opportunities to study parton shower formation and propagation in the quark-gluon plasma and has been argued to provide tight constrains on the energy loss of reconstructed jets. We present theoretical predictions for isolated photon-tagged and electroweak boson-tagged jet production in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN…
We present first analytic, resummed calculations of the rates at which widespread jet substructure tools tag QCD jets. As well as considering trimming, pruning and the mass-drop tagger, we introduce modified tools with improved analytical and phenomenological behaviours. Most taggers have double logarithmic resummed structures. The modified mass-drop tagger is special in that it involves only single logarithms, and is free from a complex class of terms known as non-global logarithms. The modification of pruning brings an improved ability to discriminate between the different colour structures …
Hard probes - final state particles related to an interaction with large momentum transfer or mass scale - play a distinguished role in the discovery and the study of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), a phase of deconfined quarks and gluons reached at high temperatures in heavy ion collisions. In heavy ion collisions, parton scatterings with a large momentum transfer ($1/Q \ll 1$ fm/$c$) occur prior to QGP formation and thus provide a source of coloured probe particles for the QGP created in the later stage of the reaction. The hard scattered partons and the subsequent parton shower interact stron…
We present predictions for the nuclear modification factor and elliptic flow of D and B mesons, as well as of their decay electrons, in semicentral Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. Heavy quarks are propagated in a Quark-Gluon Plasma using a relativistic Langevin simulation with drag and diffusion coefficients from elastic interactions with light anti-/quarks and gluons, including non-perturbative resonance scattering. Hadronization at T_c is performed within a combined coalescence-fragmentation scheme.
Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), a QCD state of matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, has remarkable properties, including, for example, a low shear viscosity over entropy ratio. By detecting the collection of low-momentum particles that arise from the collision, it is possible to gain quantitative insight into the created matter. However, its fast evolution and thermalization properties remain elusive. Only using high momentum objects as probes of QGP can unveil its constituents at different wavelengths. In this review, we attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of what was, …
I develop an Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework to compute jet substructure observables for heavy ion collision experiments. As an illustration, I consider dijet events that accompany the formation of a weakly coupled Quark Gluon Plasma(QGP) medium in a heavy ion collision and look at an observable insensitive to jet selection bias: the simultaneous measurement of jet mass along with the transverse momentum imbalance between the jets that are groomed to remove soft radiation. Treating the jet as an open quantum system, I write down a factorization formula within the SCET(Soft Collinear Eff…
Jets of collimated particles serve a multitude of purposes in high energy collisions. Recently, studies of jet interaction with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in high energy heavy ion collisions are of growing interest, particularly towards understanding partonic energy loss in the QGP medium and its related modifications of the jet shower and fragmentation. Since the QGP is a colored medium, the extent of jet quenching and consequently, the transport properties of the medium are expected to be sensitive to fundamental properties of the jets such as the flavor of the parton that initiate…
It has recently been demonstrated with Monte Carlo studies that combining the well-known Y-splitter and trimming techniques gives rise to important gains in the signal significance achievable for boosted electroweak boson tagging at high $p_t$. Here we carry out analytical calculations that explain these findings from first principles of QCD both for grooming via trimming and via the modified mass-drop tagger (mMDT). We also suggest modifications to Y-splitter itself, which result in great simplifications to the analytical results both for pure Y-splitter as well as its combination with genera…
High-$p_T$ jets are an important tool for characterizing the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collisions. However, a precise understanding of the jet-medium interaction is still lacking, and the development of more sophisticated observables is needed. This work presents a tool that allows for the exploration of alternative high-$p_T$ observables in a variety of collision systems. The tool builds on the publicly available JEWEL Monte Carlo code, and allows for the evolution of a jet on any given (2+1)-dimensional background. Proof-of-concept observables are also presented, studied …
The hot and dense matter formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is termed quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The evolution of the medium is characterized by non-trivial velocity and vorticity fields, resulting in the polarization of the produced particles. The spin polarization, being sensitive to the hydrothermal (flow velocity and temperature) gradients, is unique compared to conventional observables that are sensitive to the hydrothermal fields only. Hence, the recent measurements of global and local hyperon spin polariza…
Understanding the inner working of the quark-gluon plasma requires complete and precise jet substructure studies in heavy ion collisions. In this proceeding we discuss the use of quark and gluon jets as independent probes, and how their classification allows us to uncover regions of QCD phase space sensitive to medium dynamics. We introduce the telescoping deconstruction (TD) framework to capture complete jet information and show that TD observables reveal fundamental properties of quark and gluon jets and their modifications in the medium. We draw connections to soft-drop subjet distributions…
Using a pQCD picture for jet evolution in a dense QCD medium, in which medium-induced parton branchings are factorized from vacuum-like emissions, we study two jet substructure observables: the $z_g$ and the Soft Drop multiplicity distributions. We compute the respective nuclear modification factors using a Monte-Carlo implementation of the parton showers. Our results are in qualitative agreement with LHC data for Pb+Pb collisions. We identify the physical mechanisms explaining our results: incoherent jet energy loss, semi-hard medium-induced emissions and the bias introduced by the steeply fa…
The modifications of $D_s$-meson spectra in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions are identified as a quantitative probe of key properties of the hot nuclear medium. This is enabled by the unique valence-quark content of the $D_s$=$c\bar{s}$ which couples the well-known strangeness enhancement with the collective-flow pattern of primordially produced charm quarks. We employ a consistent strong-coupling treatment with hydrodynamic bulk evolution and nonperturbative $T$-matrix interactions for both heavy-quark diffusion and hadronization in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). A large enhancement of t…
Interactions of hard partons in the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) created with relativistic heavy ion collisions lead to characteristic modifications of the internal structure of reconstructed jets. A large part of the observed jet sub-structure modifications stem from the QGP's response to energy and momentum deposited by hard partons. Good control over medium response in theoretical calculations is thus instrumental to a quantitative understanding of medium modified (quenched) jets in heavy ion collisions. We present an improved way of handling the medium response in the jet quenching model JEWEL…
