The presence of a hot and dense medium, produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, is known to modify the parton shower evolution. Several observations of the resulting intra-jet activity show significant modifications of what can be considered as a medium-modified jet from a "vacuum" (proton-proton) reference. These modifications, generically known as jet quenching effects, are the result of the multiple interactions of the parton shower with the produced fast-evolving quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Recent efforts have tried to assess the time dependence of jet quenching effects, with particular focus on late or early dynamics. In this talk, we show a novel tool that can potentially evaluate the full-time evolution of the QGP by applying jet reclustering techniques. The result can bring novel insights into the QGP expansion as well as shed some light on how to re-sum, in a consistent way, vacuum-like and medium-like emissions into a single parton shower evolution equation.
The suppression of large transverse momentum hadrons in heavy-ion (A-A) collisions as compared to their scaled expectation from proton-proton collisions due to the interaction of hard partons with the hot and dense QCD medium in A-A collisions is experimentally a well established phenomenon. Focusing on leading hadrons produced in hard processes, the medium effect appears as energy loss. Beyond that, the question is how the lost energy is redistributed in the medium. With increased experimental statistics and most importantly the kinematic range of the LHC, studying the properties of full jets…
In the case that a dense medium is created in a heavy ions collision, high-E_t jets are expected to be broadened by medium-modified gluon emission. This broadening is directly related, through geometry, to the energy loss measured in inclusive high-p_t particle suppression. We present here the modifications of jet observables due to the presence of a medium for the case of azimuthal jet energy distributions and k_t-differential multiplicities inside the jets.
The collimation of energy inside medium-modified jets is investigated in the leading logarithmic approximation of QCD. The Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution equations are slightly modified by introducing splitting functions enhanced in the infrared sector. As compared to elementary collisions in the vacuum, the angular istribution of the jet energy is found to broaden in QCD media.
$γ$-jet production is considered one of the best probes of the hot quark-gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions since the direct $γ$ can be used to gauge the initial energy and momentum of the associated jet. This is investigated within the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model for jet propagation and jet-induced medium excitation. With both parton energy loss and medium response from jet-medium interaction included, LBT can describe experimental data well on $γ$-jet correlation in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Multiple jets associated with direct $γ$ production are…
Comprehensive understanding of medium-induced radiative energy loss is of a paramount importance in describing observed jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions. In this work, we have calculated the medium-modified gluon splitting rates for different profiles of the expanding partonic medium, namely profiles for static, exponential, and Bjorken expanding medium. Here in this study, we have used the Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff-Zakharov (BDMPSZ) formalism for multiple soft scatterings with a time-dependent transport coefficient for characterizing the expanding medium. Using the kinetic r…
Realistic modeling of medium-jet interactions in heavy ion collisions is becoming increasingly important to successfully predict jet structure and shape observables. In JEWEL, all partons belonging to the parton showers initiated by hard scattered partons undergo collisions with thermal partons from the medium, leading to both elastic and radiative energy loss. The recoiling medium partons carry away energy and momentum from the jet. Since the thermal component of these recoils' momenta is part of the soft background activity, comparison with data requires the implementation of a subtraction p…
For an energetic jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma, we present the physical picture of jet quenching in longitudinal phase-space, as emerging from the interplay between the medium-induced, quasi-democratic, branchings and the elastic collisions responsible for the thermalization of the soft branching products.
While the modification of jets by a medium as created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is often thought of as a phenomenon affecting a hard near on-shell parton and hence treated as partonic energy loss, a more realistic view is to think of the medium effect as a relatively small correction to the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) vacuum radiation pattern which reduces the initial high virtuality of hard partons and leads to the development of a shower. The uncertainty relation can be used to argue that a significant part of this shower is developed even before a medium can be formed. The …
With deep learning techniques, the degree of modification of energetic jets that traversed hot QCD medium can be identified on a jet-by-jet basis. Due to the strong correlations between the degree of jet modification and its traversed length in the medium, we demonstrate the power of our novel method to locate the creation point of a dijet pair in the nuclear overlap region. In particular, jet properties, such as jet width and orientation can serve as additional handles to locate the creation points to a higher level of precision, which constitutes a significant development towards the long-st…
Jet quenching has been established as one of the main tools to study the properties of the medium produced in heavy ion collisions. Most of the experimental effort has been, up to now, on the measurements of inclusive particle suppression. This observable suffers, however, of limitations due to different trigger-bias effects. The study of jets (or particle correlations) in a medium is the most promising way out for a better characterization of the medium properties. I will present how these more differential measurements can be used to study not only the density of the medium (the traditional …
The energy-loss of hard probes within the hot and dense medium of a quark gluon plasma (QGP) can be described by theoretical models based on radiative energy loss as well as combinations of collisional and radiative energy loss. In a search for observables that allow to disentangle these energy-loss mechanisms, we introduced a set of effective models that allows to investigate the consequences on jets of both types of jet-medium interactions within a consistent framework. We particularly studied angular jet-broadening via angular two-particle correlations. Distinguishing contributions from pai…
We present a study of the impact of the expansion of deconfined medium on single-gluon emission spectra and the jet suppression factor ($Q_{AA}$) within the BDMPS-Z formalism. These quantities are calculated for three types of media (static medium, exponentially decaying medium and Bjorken expanding medium). The distribution of medium-induced gluons and the jet $Q_{AA}$ are calculated using the evaluation of in-medium evolution with splitting kernels derived from the gluon emission spectra. Scaling behavior of splitting kernels is derived for low-x and high-x regimes in the asymptote of large …
We study the influence of in-medium transverse momentum broadening on observables of jet pairs produced in nuclear collisions. These dijets were obtained numerically via the Monte-Carlo simulations of nuclear collisions, where the partons within the colliding nuclei were described via unintegrated parton densities, and their subsequent propagation within the medium of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). For jet-evolution in the QGP both, kicks transverse to the momentum of the incoming particle as well as medium induced radiation were considered. After favorable comparison of our results with experime…
The angular structure of collisional and radiative energy losses of a hard parton jet propagating through the quark-gluon plasma is analyzed. The possibility to observe the energy losses of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in dense QCD-matter (jet quenching) measuring the characteristics of real hadronic jets in ultra-relativistic collisions of nuclei is investigated. In particular, using calorimetric studies of jet + jet, gamma + jet and Z + jet channels is discussed.
Based on a pQCD inspired dynamical model of jet-medium interactions, Jewel, we have studied possible modifications to inclusive jet yields and a set of jet shape observables, namely, the fragmentation functions and radial momentum distributions when jets propagate through a deconfined partonic medium created in collisions of heavy nuclei at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. Jets are reconstructed with anti-k T algorithm in the pseudorapidity range $|η_{\rm jet} | < 2.1$ for resolution parameter R= 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4. For background subtraction, a Jewel-compatible 4-Momenta subtraction techni…
The "jet-quenching" interpretation of suppressed high-pT hadron production at RHIC implies that jet multiplicity distributions and jet-like particle correlations in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC differ strongly from those seen at e+e- or pp colliders. Here, we present an approach for describing the changes induced by the medium, which implements jet quenching as a probabilistic medium-modified parton shower, treating leading and subleading parton splittings on an equal footing. We show that the strong suppression of single inclusive hadron spectra measured in Au-Au collisions at RHIC im…
Energy-loss studies of hard particle probes produced in heavy ion collisions have often been used to get information on the interactions within the medium of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). However, with the study of in-medium energy-loss of individual particles alone, it remains still ambiguous, whether the occured decrease in particle energy is caused by predominantly radiative or collisional energy-loss mechanisms. Focusing on the in-medium energy-loss of hard jet-partons, we propose additional studies of the angular jet-structure as a means to further constrain the energy-loss mechanisms.
We have developed the Monte Carlo simulation program JEWEL 1.0 (Jet Evolution With Energy Loss), which interfaces a perturbative final state parton shower with medium effects occurring in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. This is done by comparing for each jet fragment the probability of further perturbative splitting with the density-dependent probability of scattering with the medium. A simple hadronisation mechanism is included. In the absence of medium effects, we validate JEWEL against a set of benchmark jet measurements. For elastic interactions with the medium, we characterise no…
The measured data on the nuclear modification factor for pions and reconstructed jets as well as on the high-pT elliptic flow at RHIC and LHC energies are compared to results from a linear pQCD and a highly non-linear hybrid AdS holographic model of jet-energy loss. We find that the high-pT ellitic flow requires to include realistic medium transverse flow fields and a jet-medium coupling including the effects of the energy of the jet, the temperature of the bulk medium, and non-equilibrium effects close to the phase transition. We extend our jet-energy loss model that is coupled to state-of-th…
The two-prong structure related to the leading subjets inside a reconstructed jet opens new avenues toward precision constraints on the in-medium modification of parton showers. In this talk, we present the first resummed calculation of the soft-dropped groomed momentum sharing distribution, or the jet splitting function, in heavy-ion collisions for both light jets and heavy flavor tagged jets. Existing light jet splitting function data from the STAR experiment at RHIC and the CMS experiment at LHC can be understood in the unified framework of soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluon…
We calculate the wake induced in a hot, dense QCD medium by a fast parton in the framework of linear response theory. We discuss two different scenarios: (i) a weakly coupled quark gluon plasma (pQGP) described by hard-thermal loop (HTL) perturbation theory and (ii) a scenario where the plasma has the properties of a quantum liquid. We show that Mach cones can appear in the second scenario, but not in the first one.
Medium-induced parton energy loss is widely considered to underly the suppression of high-pt leading hadron spectra in 200 GeV/A Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Its description implies a characteristic kt-broadening of the subleading hadronic fragments associated to the hard parton. However, this latter effect is more difficult to measure and remained elusive so far. Here, we discuss how it affects genuine jet observables which are accessible at LHC and possibly at RHIC. We find that the kt-broadening of jet multiplicity distributions provides a very sensitive probe of the properties of dense QCD ma…
In this plenary talk I discuss soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) as a framework for precision QCD phenomenology. Emphasis is placed on jet and heavy flavor observables accessible at current and future collider facilities. One of the principal challenges that calculations of hard probes in heavy ion reactions face is the ambiguity associated with the implementation of medium-induced radiative effects. I demonstrate how extension of SCET to describe parton propagation in QCD matter has helped quantify and reduce the theoretical uncertainty in jet quenching calculations.
This text contains a summary and personal perspective on the current status and challenges of jet quenching physics as portrayed by the presentations delivered at the 12th International Conference on Hard and Electromagnetic Probes of High-Energy Nuclear Collisions (Hard Probes 2024) which took place in September 2024 in Nagasaki, Japan.
We study the gluon radiation spectrum off a hard in-medium produced quark in the multiple soft rescattering formalism of Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff, and of Zakharov (BDMPS-Z). Its dependence on the quark and gluon energy, on the gluon transverse momentum, on the in-medium pathlength and on the rescattering properties of the nuclear medium is analyzed quantitatively. The two components of gluon radiation, the hard vacuum radiation associated to the quark production vertex, and the medium-induced rescattering contribution interfer destructively. For small spatial extensions of the me…
The possibility to observe the medium-modified fragmentation of hard b-quarks tagged by a leading muon in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is analyzed. We have found that reasonable statistics, ~20000 events per 1 month of LHC run with lead beams, can be expected for the realistic geometrical acceptance and kinematic cuts. The numerical estimates on the effect of the medium-induced softening b-jet fragmentation function are given.
We discuss correlations between two particles in jets at high energy colliders and exactly solve the MLLA evolution equations in the small x limit. We thus extend the Fong-Webber analysis to the region away from the hump of the single inclusive energy spectrum. We give our results for LEP, Tevatron and LHC energies, and compare with existing experimental data.
A new analysis of the modification of the hadronization process in the nuclear medium for pions is presented. The effective description is condensed in a set of medium modified fragmentation functions (nFFs) obtained at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy. The study was made using the open-source tool xFitter, conveniently modified to incorporate semi-inclusive processes. Theoretical uncertainties for the nFFs are also provided.
We discuss preliminary results on medium-modified fragmentation functions obtained in a combined NLO fit to data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off nuclei and hadroproduction in deuteron-gold collisions.
Heavy ion collisions at high energies can be used as an interesting way to recreate and study the medium of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We particularly investigate the jets produced in hard binary collisions and their interactions with a tentative medium. These jets were obtained numerically from the Monte-Carlo simulations of hard collisions using the KATIE-algorithm [1], where parton momenta within the colliding nucleons were describe by means of unintegrated parton distribution functions (uPDF). We evolved these jets within a medium that contains both, transverse kicks (yielding a broaden…
Different types of high energy hard probes are used to extract the jet transport properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma created in heavy-ion collisions, of which the heavy boson tagged jets are undoubtedly the most sophisticated due to its clean decay signature and production mechanism. In this study, we used the resummation improved pQCD approach with high order correction in the hard factor to calculate the momentum ratio $x_J$ distributions of $Z$ and Higgs($H$) tagged jets. We found that the formalism can provide a good description of the 5.02 TeV $pp$ data. Using the BDMPS energy loss forma…
High P_T observables associated with hard pQCD processes are regarded as tomographic probes of the medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Unfortunately, tomography is unexpectedly complicated in practice due to model uncertainties and the highly averaged nature of many observables. However, a systematic comparison study demanding a simultaneous description of many observables within the same framework is sufficiently powerful to rule out a large fraction of conjectured models about the physics mechanism of parton-medium interaction. From this study, it can be inferred that t…
The computation of hard processes in hadronic collisions is a major success of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. The environment of heavy-ion collisions offers the opportunity to embed such hard processes into a soft medium which is created simultaneously and study the medium-induced modifications. On the level of single high transverse momentum hadrons, a reduction in yield, the so-called quenching is observed. However, on the level of jets, the energy-momentum flux carried by hadrons is conserved, i.e. the effect of the medium is a redistribution of energy and momentum, and statements abo…
The suppression of single inclusive hadron spectra in heavy-ion collision as compared to the scaled expectation from proton-proton collisions has long been regarded as an interesting tool to study properties of the bulk matter in heavy-ion collisions. However, the limitations of this class of observables has become increasingly obvious, and both experimental and theoretical efforts are now made to go beyond single hadrons to fully reconstructed jets. Monte-Carlo simulations of in-medium parton showers are currently considered the most promising tool to theoretically access jet physics in heavy…
High-pt particles produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions constitute a powerful tool to study the medium properties. The energy loss resulting from the propagation of these particles in the produced medium translates into a suppression of the high-pt yields. These effects are usually associated to medium-induced gluon radiation which, in turn, predicts a broadening of the jet-like signals. Both the energy loss and the jet broadening are expected to increase proportionally to the medium density. In the more realistic case of a dynamically expanding medium, the gluon radiation becomes anisotropic…
Using the opacity expansion technique we investigate the photon radiation and dilepton production induced by multiple rescattering as energetic parton jet passing through the strong interacting medium. The real photon radiation and dilepton invariant-mass spectrums of the bremsstrahlung contribution from an energetic quark jet are presented. The leading contribution of total energy loss by photon emmision in medium of a higher energy quark jet is found to be proportional to the jet energy and has a linear dependence on the thickness of the nuclear target. The rescattering contribution for the …
We present the medium-modified energy collimation in the leading-logarithmic approximation (LLA) and next-to-leading-logarithmic approximation (NLLA) of QCD. As a consequence of more accurate kinematic considerations in the argument of the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) fragmentation functions (FFs) we find a new NLLA correction ${\cal O}(α_s)$ which accounts for the scaling violation of DGLAP FFs at small $x$. The jet shape is derived from the energy collimation within the same approximations and we also compare our calculations for the energy collimation with the event ge…
While jet quenching in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is firmly established as a phenomenon resulting from the interplay between hard perturbative and soft fluid-dynamical Quantum Chromodynamics (or equivalently the interaction between hard probes and bulk QCD matter), less is known with certainty about the reaction of bulk matter to the passage of a jet. On general grounds, a jet interacting while passing through a medium represents a source of energy and momentum for the bulk matter fluid. If the precise form of such a source term is known, the reaction of the medium can be computed …
We calculate the contributions to the two-loop scattering amplitudes $h \to gg$, $h \to ggg$ and $h \to q \bar q g$ that arise from a modified trilinear Higgs coupling $λ$. Analytic expressions are obtained by performing an asymptotic expansion near the limit of infinitely heavy top quark. The calculated amplitudes are necessary to study the impact of the ${\cal O} (λ)$ corrections to the transverse momentum distributions ($p_{T,h}$) in single-Higgs production at hadron colliders for low and moderate values of $p_{T,h}$.
In this brief review, I summarize the new developments on the description of gluon radiation by energetic quarks traversing a medium as well as the observable consequences in high-energy heavy ion collisions. Information about the initial state is essential for a reliable interpretation of the experimental results and will also be reviewed. Comparison with experimental data from RHIC and expectation for the future LHC will be given.
The Monte Carlo model JEWEL 1.0 (Jet Evolution With Energy Loss) simulates parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium. In its current form medium interactions are modelled as elastic scattering based on perturbative matrix elements and a simple prescription for medium induced gluon radiation. The parton shower is interfaced with a hadronisation model. In the absence of medium effects JEWEL is shown to reproduce jet measurements at LEP. The collisional energy loss is consistent with analytic calculations, but with JEWEL we can go a step further and characterise also jet-induc…
I discuss the recent implementation of medium-modified splitting functions within the HERWIG angular-ordered parton shower algorithm and present a few results on transverse momentum, energy and angular distributions.
The energy evolution of average multiplicities and multiplicity fluctuations in jets produced in heavy-ion collisions is investigated from a toy QCD-inspired model. In this model, we use modified splitting functions accounting for medium-enhanced radiation of gluons by a fast parton which propagates through the quark gluon plasma. The leading contribution of the standard production of soft hadrons is enhanced by a factor $\sqrt{N_s}$ while next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections are suppressed by $1/\sqrt{N_s}$, where the parameter $N_s>1$ accounts for the induced-soft gluons in the medium. Ou…
I look at propagation of jets that act as a probe of the medium in the phenomenologically relevant case of a short lived dilute Quark Gluon Plasma(QGP) created during heavy ion collisions. Working in the regime where the lifetime of the medium is of the order or smaller than the formation time of the energetic jet, I derive a factorization formula with a manifest separation of scales for an illustrative jet substructure observable using the Open Quantum system Effective Field Theory(EFT) approach developed in \cite{Vaidya:2020lih}, in terms of a medium structure function and a medium induced j…
Photons resulting from jet-medium interactions offer the opportunity of studying the evolving quark distribution in a heavy ion collision. The spectra of jet-medium photons is presented within the JETSCAPE framework for two different energy loss models, MARTINI and CUJET. Jet-medium photons can contribute significantly to the spectrum of direct photons in the intermediate $p_T$ range.
Medium modification of γ-tagged jets in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is investigated within a Linearized Boltzmann Transport model for jet propagation that includes both elastic parton scattering and induced gluon emission. Inclusion of recoiled medium partons in the reconstruction of partonic jets is found to significantly reduce the net jet energy loss. Experimental data on γ-jet asymmetry and survival rate in Pb + Pb collisions at \sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV can be reproduced. Medium modifications of reconstructed jet fragmentation function, transverse profile and energy flow outside the jet-cone…
Deep learning techniques have shown the capability to identify the degree of energy loss of high-energy jets traversing hot QCD medium on a jet-by-jet basis. The average amount of quenching of quark and gluon jets in hot QCD medium actually have different characteristics, such as their dependence on the in-medium traversed length and the early-developed jet substructures in the evolution. These observations motivate us to consider these two types of jets separately and classify them from jet images with deep learning techniques. We find that the classification performance gradually decreases w…
Coupled linear Boltzmann transport and hydrodynamic (CoLBT-hydro) model has been developed for simultaneous simulations of jet propagation and jet-induced medium excitation in heavy-ion collisions. Within this coupled approach, the final reconstructed jets in heavy-ion collisions include not only hadrons from the hadronization of medium modified jet shower partons from the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) but also hadrons from the freeze-out of the jet-induced medium excitation in the hydrodynamic evolution of the bulk medium. Using the CoLBT-hydro model, we study medium modification of the fr…
We compare a perturbative QCD-based jet-energy loss model to the measured data of the pion nuclear modification factor and the high-pT elliptic flow at RHIC and LHC energies. This jet-energy loss model (BBMG) is currently coupled to state-of-the-art hydrodynamic descriptions. We report on a model extension to medium backgrounds generated by the parton cascade BAMPS. In addition, we study the impact of realistic medium transverse flow fields and a jet-medium coupling which includes the effects of the jet energy, the temperature of the bulk medium, and non-equilibrium effects close to the phase …
\textsc{Jewel} is a fully dynamical event generator for jet evolution in a dense QCD medium, which has been validated for multiple jet and jet-like observables. Jet constituents (partons) undergo collisions with thermal partons from the medium, leading to both elastic and radiative energy loss. The recoiling medium scattering centers carry away energy and momentum from the jet. Keeping track of these recoils is essential for the description of intra-jet observables. Since the thermal component of the recoils is part of the soft background activity, comparison with data on jet observables requi…
The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model for jet propagation and interaction in quark-gluon plasma (QGP) has been used to study jet quenching in high-energy heavy-lion collisions. The suppression of single inclusive jet production, medium modification of $γ$-jet correlation, jet profiles and fragmentation functions as observed in experiments at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can be described well by LBT in which jet-induced medium response is shown to play an essential role. In event-by-event simulations of jet quenching within LBT, jet azimuthal anisotropies are found to correlate linearly wit…
We study the time structure of vacuum jet evolution via a simple uncertainty principle estimate in the kinematic range explored by current heavy ion collisions at the LHC. We observe that a large fraction of the partonic splittings occur at large times, of the order of several fm. We compare the time distribution of vacuum splittings with the distribution of path lengths traversed by jets in a heavy ion collision. We find that if no medium induced modification of the jet dynamics were present, a very large fraction (larger than 80% for inclusive jets) of the jet splittings would occur outside …
Jets produced by the initial hard scattering in heavy ion collision events lose energy due to interactions with the color-deconfined medium formed around them: the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Jet-medium interactions constitute an important theoretical and experimental field for studies of QGP, and various models with different assumptions have been proposed to describe them. A fair and direct comparison of these models requires that all other aspects of the simulation be fixed, which is achieved in this work by relying on the JETSCAPE framework. We employ JETSCAPE to directly and comprehensively…
We study the evolution of a partonic jet shower propagating through a quark-gluon plasma. Combining the in-medium evolutions of the leading parton and shower gluons, we compute the depletion of the energy from the jet cone by dissipation through elastic collisions with medium constituents, by scattering of shower partons to larger angles, and by radiation outside the jet cone. Numerical results are presented for the nuclear modification of dijet asymmetry in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC.
Jet quenching has been used successfully as a hard probe to study properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-collisions at both the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We will review recent progresses in theoretical and phenomenological studies of jet quenching with jet transport models. Special emphasis is given to effects of jet-induced medium response on a wide variety of experimental measurements and their implication on extracting transport properties of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions.
