Comprehensive understanding of medium-induced radiative energy loss is of a paramount importance in describing observed jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions. In this work, we have calculated the medium-modified gluon splitting rates for different profiles of the expanding partonic medium, namely profiles for static, exponential, and Bjorken expanding medium. Here in this study, we have used the Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff-Zakharov (BDMPSZ) formalism for multiple soft scatterings with a time-dependent transport coefficient for characterizing the expanding medium. Using the kinetic rate equation, we have numerically evaluated the distribution of the medium evolved gluon spectra for different medium profiles. We have presented a calculation of the jet $Q_{AA}$ which quantifies a sensitivity of the inclusive jet suppression on the way how the medium expands. Comparisons of predicted jet $Q_{AA}$ with experimental data from the LHC are also presented.
In this work, we propose a new class of jet substructure observables which, unlike fragmentation functions, are largely insensitive to the poorly known physics of hadronization. We show that sub-jet structures provide us with a large discriminating power between different jet quenching Monte Carlo implementations.
In this work, we extend the resummation of multiple medium-induced emissions to apply to dynamically expanding media. This is done by recasting the quenching weight as the solution of a rate equation with medium-induced partonic splitting functions that are sensitive to the expansion. We perform the calculations in the framework of Baier-Dokshitzer- Mueller-Peigne-Schiff-Zakharov (BDMPSZ) formalism for multiple soft scatterings with a time-dependent transport coefficient. Furthermore, we discuss the validity of a dynamical scaling law that relates the spectrum in an expanding medium to the equ…
A calculation of the $R^2$ corrections to the jet quenching parameter from AdS/CFT correspondence is presented. These corrections are related to curvature-squared corrections in the corresponding gravity dual. It is shown that the corrections will increase or decrease the jet quenching parameter depending on the coefficients of the high curvature terms.
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the heavy quark potential and the jet quenching parameter in the near horizon limit of D3-D(-1) background. The results are compared with those of conformal cases. It is shown that the presence of instantons tends to suppress the heavy quark potential and enhance the jet quenching parameter.
The leading order $α_s$ effect in jet quenching corresponds to the broadening of the jet's transverse momentum, due to the multiple interactions with the underlying medium. A complete understanding of momentum broadening is critical for the success of jet quenching phenomenology. In this talk, we introduce a strategy to quantum simulate single particle momentum broadening in a QCD background medium. We argue that it is, in principle, possible to extract the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ from such an algorithm. More importantly, this corresponds to the first step towards simulating full med…
We study, at a qualitative level, production of jet pairs in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions within a framework combining High Energy Factorisation (HEF) and in-medium propagation of jet particles that takes into account stochastic transverse forces as well as medium-induced radiation. We find that the resulting di-jet observables feature the behaviour deviating from that of jet-pairs which undergo transverse-momentum broadening following the Gaussian distribution.
We quantify the magnitude of the parton energy loss in jets in lead-lead collisions at the LHC. We extract the effective color factor characterizing the difference between the in-medium radiation of quark-initiated jets and gluon-initiated jets from the data. Then, we examine the energy loss of prompt charmonia and we point to a remarkable similarity between the quenching of light-quark-initiated jets and the prompt charmonia suppression. Finally, we discuss possible sources of this similarity.
The physics program of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) has brought a unique insight into the hot and dense QCD matter created in such collisions, the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Jet quenching, a collection of medium-induced modifications of the jets' internal structure that occur through their development in dense QCD matter, has a unique potential to assess the time structure of the produced medium. In this work, we perform an exploratory study to identify jet reclustering tools that can potentiate future QGP …
We present a study of the impact of the expansion of deconfined medium on single-gluon emission spectra and the jet suppression factor ($Q_{AA}$) within the BDMPS-Z formalism. These quantities are calculated for three types of media (static medium, exponentially decaying medium and Bjorken expanding medium). The distribution of medium-induced gluons and the jet $Q_{AA}$ are calculated using the evaluation of in-medium evolution with splitting kernels derived from the gluon emission spectra. Scaling behavior of splitting kernels is derived for low-x and high-x regimes in the asymptote of large …
We propose a novel hybrid model for jet quenching, including both strong and weak coupling physics where each seems appropriate. Branching in the parton shower is assumed to be perturbative and described by DGLAP evolution, while interactions with the medium result in each parton in the shower losing energy as at strong coupling, as realized holographically. The medium-modified parton shower is embedded into a hydrodynamic evolution of hot QCD plasma and confronted with LHC jet data.
We study jet quenching in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions in the scenario with formation of a mini quark-gluon plasma. We find a significant suppression effect. For light hadrons at $p_{T}\sim 10$ GeV we obtained the reduction of the spectra by $\sim [20-30,25-35,30-40]$\% in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=[0.2, 2.76,7]$ TeV. We discuss how jet quenching in $pp$ collisions may change the predictions for the nuclear modification factors in $AA$ collisions for light and heavy flavors. We also give predictions for modification of the photon-tagged and inclusive jet fragmentation functions in high multipli…
The inclusive transverse momentum (pt) distribution of hadrons inside jets produced in PbPb and pp collisions are simulated with the YaJEM and Pythia 6 Monte Carlo (MC) event generators. The effects of jet quenching are studied via the ratios of PbPb over pp hadron pt spectra, either by accounting for the induced virtuality Delta Q^2 transferred from the strongly-interacting medium to the parton shower or by modifying the soft sector of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions. The MC results are compared to experimental jet data measured by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of…
We confront a hybrid strong/weak coupling model for jet quenching to data from LHC heavy ion collisions. The model combines the perturbative QCD physics at high momentum transfer and the strongly coupled dynamics of non- abelian gauge theories plasmas in a phenomenological way. By performing a full Monte Carlo simulation, and after fitting one single parameter, we successfully describe several jet observables at the LHC, including dijet and photon jet measurements. Within current theoretical and experimental uncertainties, we find that such observables show little sensitivity to the specifics …
We study the collisional aspects of jet quenching in a high energy nuclear collision, especially in the final state pion gas. The jet has a large energy, and acquires momentum transverse to its axis more effectively by multiple soft collisions than by few hard scatterings (as known from analogous systems such as J/ψproduction at Hera). Such regime of large E and small momentum transfer corresponds to Regge kinematics and is characteristically dominated by the pomeron. From this insight we estimate the jet quenching parameter in the hadron medium (largely a pion gas) at the end of the collision…
Progress in the theoretical understanding of parton branching dynamics within an expanding Quark Gluon Plasma relies on detailed and fair comparisons with experimental data for reconstructed jets. Such comparisons are only meaningful when the computed jet, be it analytically or via event generation, accounts for the complexity of jets reconstructed in the challenging environment of heavy-ion collisions. Jet reconstruction in heavy ion collisions involves a necessarily imperfect subtraction of the large and fluctuating underlying event: reconstructed jets always include underlying event contami…
We present a short overview of recent progress in the theory of jet quenching in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions, including phenomenological studies of jet quenching at RHIC and the LHC, development in NLO perburbative QCD calculation of jet broadening and energy loss, full jet evolution and modification, medium response to jet transport, and lattice QCD and AdS/CFT studies of jet quenching.
Building upon the hybrid strong/weak coupling model for jet quenching, we incorporate and study the effects of transverse momentum broadening and medium response of the plasma to jets on a variety of observables. For inclusive jet observables, we find little sensitivity to the strength of broadening. To constrain those dynamics, we propose new observables constructed from ratios of differential jet shapes, in which particles are binned in momentum, which are sensitive to the in-medium broadening parameter. We also investigate the effect of the back-reaction of the medium on the angular structu…
