The jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ is analyzed for a quark jet propagating in an anisotropic plasma. The momentum anisotropy is calculated at high temperature of the underlying quark-gluon plasma. $\hat{q}$ is explicitly estimated in leading-logarithmic approximation by the broadening of the massless quark interacting via gluon exchange. A plasma instability is present. Strong indications are found that $\hat{q}$ is increasing with increasing anisotropy. Possible implications for the saturation scale $Q_s$ in $A-A$ collisions are pointed out.
We study, at a qualitative level, production of jet pairs in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions within a framework combining High Energy Factorisation (HEF) and in-medium propagation of jet particles that takes into account stochastic transverse forces as well as medium-induced radiation. We find that the resulting di-jet observables feature the behaviour deviating from that of jet-pairs which undergo transverse-momentum broadening following the Gaussian distribution.
We use the framework of Glauber extended Soft-Collinear Effective Theory to explicitly derive a gauge invariant expression of the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$. The effective theory approach offers a systematic power counting scheme at the Lagrangian level and allows for a consistent treatment of the relevant scales in the problem. Employing this approach in a covariant gauge scenario lead to an expression for $\hat{q}$ containing the expectation value of two light-cone Wilson lines. We find that in a general gauge, additional interaction terms in the Lagrangian have to be considered, lead…
The leading order $α_s$ effect in jet quenching corresponds to the broadening of the jet's transverse momentum, due to the multiple interactions with the underlying medium. A complete understanding of momentum broadening is critical for the success of jet quenching phenomenology. In this talk, we introduce a strategy to quantum simulate single particle momentum broadening in a QCD background medium. We argue that it is, in principle, possible to extract the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ from such an algorithm. More importantly, this corresponds to the first step towards simulating full med…
We argue that the radiative energy loss of a parton traversing the quark-gluon plasma is determined by Landau damping of soft modes in the plasma. Using this idea, we calculate the jet quenching parameter of a gluon. The calculation is done in SU(3) quenched QCD within the stochastic vacuum model. At the LHC-relevant temperatures, the result depends on the gluon condensate, the vacuum correlation length, and the gluon Debye mass. Numerically, when the temperature varies from T=T_c to T=900 MeV, the jet quenching parameter rises from \hat q=0 to approximately 1.8 GeV^2/fm. We compare our result…
The jet shape modification due to partonic energy loss in the dense QCD matter is investigated by the help of the special transverse energy-energy correlator in the vicinity of maximum energy deposition of every event. In the accepted scenario with scattering of jet hard partons off comoving medium constituents this correlator is independent of the pseudorapidity position of a jet axis and becomes considerably broader (symmetrically over the pseudorapidity and the azimuthal angle) in comparison with $pp$-collisions. At scattering off "slow" medium constituents the broadening of correlation fun…
We propose a system of evolution equations that describe in-medium time-evolution of transverse-momentum-dependent quark and gluon fragmentation functions. Furthermore, we solve this system of equations using Monte Carlo methods. We then quantify the obtained solutions in terms of a few characteristic features, namely the average transverse momentum $\langle |k|\rangle$ and energy contained in a cone, which allow us to see different behaviour of quark and gluon initiated final-state radiation. In particular, the later allows us to conclude that in the gluon-initiated processes there is less en…
The phase transition and jet quenching parameter ${\hat q}$ have been investigated in the framework of dynamical holographic QCD model. It is found that both the trace anomaly and the ratio of the jet quenching parameter over cubic temperature ${\hat q}/T^3$ show a peak around the critical temperature $T_c$, and the ratio of jet quenching parameter over entropy density ${\hat q}/s$ sharply rises at $T_c$. This indicates that the jet quenching parameter can characterize the phase transition. The effect of jet quenching parameter enhancement around phase transition on nuclear modification factor…
We derive an expression relating the transport parameter $\hat{q}$ and the shear viscosity $η$ of a weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma. A deviation from this relation can be regarded as a quantitative measure of ``strong coupling'' of the medium. The ratio $T^3/\hat{q}$, where $T$ is the temperature, is a more broadly valid measure of the coupling strength of the medium than $η/s$, where $s$ denotes the entropy density. Different estimates of $\hat{q}$ derived from existing RHIC data are shown to imply radically different structures of the produced matter.
Building upon the hybrid strong/weak coupling model for jet quenching, we incorporate and study the effects of transverse momentum broadening and medium response of the plasma to jets on a variety of observables. For inclusive jet observables, we find little sensitivity to the strength of broadening. To constrain those dynamics, we propose new observables constructed from ratios of differential jet shapes, in which particles are binned in momentum, which are sensitive to the in-medium broadening parameter. We also investigate the effect of the back-reaction of the medium on the angular structu…
Within the framework of a high-twist approach, we show the first complete next-to-leading order calculation of transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic $e+A$ scattering and Drell-Yan dilepton production in $p+A$ collisions. We demonstrate at one-loop level how QCD factorization holds for multiple scattering in nuclear medium, and the university of the associated quark-gluon correlation function. Our calculation also identifies QCD evolution equation for the quark-gluon correlation function, which determines the QCD factorization scale and energy dependence of jet trans…
It has been known for many years that soft radiation can give potentially large double-logarithm corrections to $p_\perp$ broadening of a high-energy particle traveling through QCD matter, but that this soft radiation correction can be absorbed into an effective value $\hat q_{\rm eff}$ for the medium $p_\perp$-broadening parameter $\hat q$. Here "soft" means high energy compared to medium scales but soft compared to the original high-energy particle traveling through the medium. A similar situation arises in the case of soft corrections to hard splitting of a high-energy particle, such as har…
We reconsider the problem of transverse momentum broadening of a highly-energetic parton suffering multiple scatterings in dense colored media, such as the thermal Quark-Gluon plasma or large nuclei. In the framework of Molière's theory of multiple scattering we re-derive a simple analytic formula, to be used in jet quenching phenomenology, that accounts for both the multiple soft and hard Rutherford scattering regimes. Further, we discuss the sensitivity of momentum broadening to modeling of the non-perturbative infrared sector by presenting a detailed analytic and numerical comparison betwee…
High-pt particles produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions constitute a powerful tool to study the medium properties. The energy loss resulting from the propagation of these particles in the produced medium translates into a suppression of the high-pt yields. These effects are usually associated to medium-induced gluon radiation which, in turn, predicts a broadening of the jet-like signals. Both the energy loss and the jet broadening are expected to increase proportionally to the medium density. In the more realistic case of a dynamically expanding medium, the gluon radiation becomes anisotropic…
We investigate the jet-quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ for the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) for $N_c=3$, defined nonperturbatively with the Wilson loop in the light-cone (LC) coordinate, at finite temperature $(T)$. Considering the effective static (heavy) quark-antiquark potential $V_{\bar{Q}Q}=σL+C-A/L$, where $L$ indicates the LC transverse separation between the quarks, we obtain $\hat{q}\approx8V_{\bar{Q}Q}/L^2$. The $T$ dependences for $L$ and other relevant parameters are extracted from the $T$-dependent instanton (trivial-holonomy caloron) length parameters and the lattice QCD data. By choos…
Recently Liu, Rajagopal and Wiedemann (LRW) [hep-ph/0605178] proposed a first principle, nonperturbative quantum field theoretic definition of ``jet quenching parameter'' \hat{q} used in models of medium-induced radiative parton energy loss in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC. Relating \hat{q} to a short-distance behavior of a certain light-like Wilson loop, they used gauge theory-string theory correspondence to evaluate \hat{q} for the strongly coupled N=4 SU(N_c) gauge theory plasma. We generalize analysis of LRW to strongly coupled non-conformal gauge theory plasma. We find that a jet que…
Jet quenching, the modification of the properties of a QCD jet when the parton cascade takes place inside a medium, is an intrinsically quantum process, where color coherence effects play an essential role. Despite a very significant progress in the last years, the simulation of a full quantum medium induced cascade remains inaccessible to classical Monte Carlo parton showers. In this situation, alternative formulations are worth being tried and the fast developments in quantum computing provide a very promising direction. The goal of this paper is to introduce a strategy to quantum simulate s…
Models of medium-induced radiative parton energy loss account for the strong suppression of high-pT hadron spectra in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC in terms of a single "jet quenching parameter'' $\hat q$. The available suite of jet quenching measurements make $\hat q$ one of the experimentally best constrained properties of the hot fluid produced in RHIC collisions. We observe that $\hat q$ can be given a model-independent, nonperturbative, quantum field theoretic definition in terms of the short-distance behavior of a particular light-like Wilson loop. We then use the AdS/…
The central goal of jet quenching studies in high-energy nuclear collisions is the characterization of those QCD medium properties that are accessible by these probes. Most of the discussion in the last years has been focused on the determination of the jet quenching parameter, $\hat q$. We present here an extraction of this parameter using data of inclusive particle suppression at RHIC and LHC energies for different centralities. Our approach consists of fitting a $K$ factor that quantifies the departure of this parameter from an ideal estimate, $K\equiv \hat q/(2ε^{3/4})$, where $\hat q$ is …
We extend the calculation of radiative corrections to momentum broadening in a QCD medium to include processes where single scattering dominates over multiple soft scatterings. Our analysis focusses on processes that are enhanced by a potentially large double logarithmic contribution. We demonstrate that such double logarithmic contributions emerge in calculations of momentum broadening in dilute systems where only single scattering occurs. We show how the different regimes, multiple versus single scattering, constrain different parts of the phase space.
We use Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) to analyze the transverse momentum broadening, or diffusion in transverse momentum space, of an energetic parton propagating through quark-gluon plasma. Since we neglect the radiation of gluons from the energetic parton, we can only discuss momentum broadening, not parton energy loss. The interaction responsible for momentum broadening in the absence of radiation is that between the energetic (collinear) parton and the Glauber modes of the gluon fields in the medium. We derive the effective Lagrangian for this interaction, and we show that the prob…
We present a framework where first principles calculations of jet modification may be carried out in a non-perturbative thermal environment. As an example of this approach, we compute the leading order contribution to the transverse momentum broadening of a high energy (near on-shell) quark in a thermal medium. This involves a factorization of a non-perturbative operator product from the perturbative process of scattering of the quark. An operator product expansion of the non-perturbative operator product is carried out and related via dispersion relations to the expectation of local operators…
We present a new definition of the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ in a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. We propose a boost-invariant definition of $\hat{q}$, which is proportional to the broadening of the angular variables $η$ (the pseudo-rapidity) and $ϕ$ (the azimuthal angle). We furthermore consider radiative corrections to $\hat{q}$ and find potentially large corrections enhanced by a double logarithm like the case of a static medium. But unlike for the static medium, these corrections are now local in (proper) time.
We study evolution equations describing jet propagation through quark--gluon plasma (QGP). In particular we investigate the contribution of momentum transfer during branching and find that such a contribution is sizeable. Furthermore, we study various approximations, such as the Gaussian approximation and the diffusive approximation to the jet-broadening term. We notice that in order to reproduce the BDIM equation (without the momentum transfer in the branching) the diffusive approximation requires a very large value of the jet-quenching parameter $\hat q$.
The nuclear $p_\perp$-broadening of Drell-Yan and quarkonium ($J/ψ$, $Υ$) production in $π$A and pA collisions is investigated. The world data follow a simple scaling from SPS to LHC energies, once the process-dependent color factors are properly taken into account, which allows for the extraction of the transport coefficient in cold nuclear matter. We find that $\hat{q}(x)\propto x^{-α}$ with $α=0.25$-$0.30$. The magnitude of the transport coefficient at $x=10^{-2}$ is $\hat{q}_0=0.051$ GeV$^2$/fm and $\hat{q}_0=0.075$ GeV$^2$/fm, whether $Q\bar{Q}$ pairs are assumed to be produced as color o…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the transverse momentum broadening distribution of an energetic quark or gluon propagating through dense QCD matter, in the large system size $L$ limit, taking into account radiative corrections in the double logarithmic approximation. Thanks to a connection between the evolution of the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ and the formation of traveling wave fronts in nonlinear physics, we obtain a formula for the $L$ dependence of the characteristic transverse momentum scale $Q_s$ of the distribution valid up to terms of order $1/\ln(L)$. We briefly discuss t…
$\hat q$ is the average squared transverse momentum transfer per unit length to a high-energy particle traversing a QCD medium such as a quark-gluon plasma. We find the (UV-regulated) value of $\hat q$ to leading order in the weak coupling limit, $\alphas(T) \ll 1$. We then use this value to generalize previous analytic results on the gluon bremsstrahlung and pair production rates for massless high-energy particles in a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma, at next-to-leading logarithmic order.
We calculate higher-order corrections to the quenching factor of heavy-quark jets due to hard, in-medium splittings in the framework of the BDMPS-Z formalism. These corrections turn out to be sensitive to a single mass-scale $m_\ast = (\hat q L)^{1/2}$, where $\hat q$ is the medium transport coefficient and $L$ the path length, and allow to draw a distinction between the way light, with $m < m_\ast$ (in contrast to massless $m=0$), and genuinely heavy, with $m > m_\ast$, quark jets are quenched in the medium. We show that the corrections to the quenching factor at high energies are double-loga…
We investigate the jet quenching parameter in the case of a fast moving quark in an anisotropic plasma. In the leading log approximation, strong indications are found that the transport coefficient increases with increasing anisotropy. Implications for the phenomenology at RHIC are discussed.
Medium modification of jet fragmentation function due to multiple scattering and induced gluon radiation leads directly to jet quenching or suppression of leading particle distribution from jet fragmentation. One can extract an effective total parton energy loss which can be related to the total transverse momentum broadening. For an expanding medium, both are shown to be sensitive to the initial parton density and formation time. Therefore, one can extract the initial parton density and formation time from simultaneous measurements of parton energy loss and transverse momentum broadening. Imp…
We study the influence of in-medium transverse momentum broadening on observables of jet pairs produced in nuclear collisions. These dijets were obtained numerically via the Monte-Carlo simulations of nuclear collisions, where the partons within the colliding nuclei were described via unintegrated parton densities, and their subsequent propagation within the medium of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). For jet-evolution in the QGP both, kicks transverse to the momentum of the incoming particle as well as medium induced radiation were considered. After favorable comparison of our results with experime…

Multi-particle potentials from light-like Wilson lines in quark-gluon plasmas: a generalized relation of in-medium splitting rates to jet-quenching parameters $\hat q$
We present a short overview of recent progress in the theory of jet quenching in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions, including phenomenological studies of jet quenching at RHIC and the LHC, development in NLO perburbative QCD calculation of jet broadening and energy loss, full jet evolution and modification, medium response to jet transport, and lattice QCD and AdS/CFT studies of jet quenching.
In our analysis, we combine event-by-event hydrodynamics, within the EKRT formulation, with jet quenching -ASW Quenching Weights- to obtain high-$p_T$ $R_{\rm AA}$ for charged particles at RHIC and LHC energies for different centralities. By defining a $K$-factor that quantifies the departure of $\hat{q}$ from an ideal estimate, $K = \hat{q}/(2ε^{3/4})$, we fit the single-inclusive experimental data for charged particles. This $K$-factor is larger at RHIC than at the LHC but, surprisingly, it is almost independent of the centrality of the collision.
We study the phenomenon of transverse momentum broadening for a high-$p_T$ parton propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. We propose a boost-invariant description for this phenomenon, in which the broadening refers to the angular variables $η$ (the pseudo-rapidity) and $ϕ$ (the azimuthal angle). The jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ which enters this description depends upon the proper time alone. We furthermore consider radiative corrections to $\hat q$. As in the case of a static medium, we find potentially large corrections …

We compute O(g) NLO corrections to the transverse scattering kernel and transverse momentum broadening coefficient $\hat{q}$ of weakly-coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. Based on this, we also compute NLO correction to the collinear splitting rates. For $\hat{q}$ we find that the NLO/LO ratio is similar to the QCD one, with large NLO corrections. This is contrasted by our findings for the collinear splitting rate, which show a much better convergence in SYM than in QCD, providing further support to earlier expectations that NLO corrections have signs and relative magnitudes controlled by the specifi…
We have calculated the quenching parameter, $\hat{q}$ in a model-independent way using the gauge-gravity duality. In earlier calculations, the geometry in the gravity side at finite temperature was usually taken as the pure AdS blackhole metric for which the dual gauge theory becomes conformally invariant unlike QCD. Therefore we use a metric which incorporates the fundamental quarks by embedding the coincident D7 branes in the Klebanov-Tseytlin background and a finite temperature is switched on by inserting a black hole into the background, known as OKS-BH metric. Further inclusion of an addi…
We study the radiative processes that affect the propagation of a high energy gluon in a dense medium, such as a quark-gluon plasma. In particular, we investigate the role of the large double logarithms corrections, $\simα_s \ln^2 L/τ_0$, that were recently identified in the study of $p_\perp$-broadening by Liou, Mueller and Wu. We show that these large corrections can be reabsorbed in a renormalization of the jet quenching parameter controlling both momentum broadening and energy loss. We argue that the probabilistic description of these phenomena remains valid, in spite of the large non-loca…
We address the geometrical structure of the "skewed" correlator of two space-like separated (almost) oppositely directed Wilson lines. Similar objects occur in the analysis of the transverse-momentum broadening probability function, the first moment of which is associated with the jet quenching parameter. We start from the Euclidean space formulation and then transform the result to the Minkowski light-cone geometry, arguing that this procedure is consistent in the leading order of the perturbative expansion. We discuss as well the issues of the UV, rapidity and IR singularities, and possible …
Quark-gluon plasma produced at the early stage of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is unstable, if weakly coupled, due to the anisotropy of its momentum distribution. Chromomagnetic fields are spontaneously generated and can reach magnitudes much exceeding typical values of the fields in equilibrated plasma. We consider a high energy test parton traversing an unstable plasma that is populated with strong fields. We study the momentum broadening parameter $\hat q$ which determines the radiative energy loss of the test parton. We develop a formalism which gives $\hat q$ as the solution of …
We discuss the transverse momentum broadening of hard probes traversing an evolving glasma, which is the earliest phase of the matter produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The coefficient $\hat q$ is calculated using the Fokker-Planck equation, and an expansion in the proper time $τ$ which is applied to describe the temporal evolution of the glasma. The correlators of the chromodynamic fields that determine the Fokker-Planck collision term, which in turn provides $\hat q$, are computed to fifth order in $τ$. The momentum broadening is shown to rapidly grow in time and reach a magnitud…
Within a multi-phase transport model with string melting scenario, jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$ is calculated in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN} } $= 200 GeV and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN} } $= 2.76 TeV. The $\hat{q}$ increases with the increasing of jet energy for both partonic phase and hadronic phase. The energy and path length dependences of $\hat{q}$ in full heavy-ion evolution are consistent with the expectations of jet quenching. The correlation between jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$ and dijet transverse momentum asymmetry $A_{J}$ is mainly investigated, which discloses…
Collisional broadening in QCD plasmas leads to the emission of medium induced radiation, which governs the energy loss of highly energetic particles or jets. While recent studies have obtained non-perturbative contributions to the collisional broadening kernel $C(b_\bot)$ using lattice simulation of the dimensionally reduced long-distance effective theory of QCD, Electrostatic QCD (EQCD), so far all phenomenological calculations of jet quenching rely on perturbative determinations of the collisional broadening kernel. By matching the short-distance behavior of the lattice extracted EQCD broade…
We compute the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$ of QCD plasma in the presence of strong magnetic field in both weakly and strongly coupled regimes. In weakly coupled regime, we compute $\hat q$ in perturbative QCD at complete leading order (that is, leading log as well as the constant under the log) in QCD coupling constant $α_s$, assuming the hierarchy of scales $α_s eB\ll T^2\ll eB$. We consider two cases of jet orientations with respect to the magnetic field: 1) the case of jet moving parallel to the magnetic field, 2) the case jet moving perpendicular to the magnetic field. In the former c…
Concept of transverse deflection probability of a parton that travels through strongly interacting medium, recently introduced by D'Eramo, Liu and Rajagopal, have been used to derive high energy evolution equation for the jet quenching parameter in stochastic multiple scatterings regime. Jet quenching parameter, ${\hat q}(x)$, appears to evolve with $x$, with an exponent $0.9{\bar α}_s$, which is slightly less than that of $x {\cal G} (x)$ where ${\cal G} (x)$ is the gluon distribution function.
We utilize a new framework, CUJET3.0, to deduce the energy and temperature dependence of jet transport parameter, $\hat{q}(E>10\; {\rm GeV},T)$, from a combined analysis of available data on nuclear modification factor and azimuthal asymmetries from RHIC/BNL and LHC/CERN on high energy nuclear collisions. Extending a previous perturbative-QCD based jet energy loss model (known as CUJET2.0) with (2+1)D viscous hydrodynamic bulk evolution, this new framework includes three novel features of nonperturbative physics origin: (1) the Polyakov loop suppression of color-electric scattering (aka "semi-…
Hadron production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of leptons from nuclei is an ideal tool to determine and constrain the transport coefficient in cold nuclear matter. The leading-order computations for hadron multiplicity ratios are performed by means of the SW quenching weights and the analytic parameterizations of quenching weights based on BDMPS formalism. The theoretical results are compared to the HERMES positively charged pions production data with the quarks hadronization occurring outside the nucleus. With considering the nuclear geometry effect on hadron production, our pr…
We study the consequences of including the running of the QCD coupling in the equation describing the evolution of the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$ in the double logarithmic approximation. To start with, we revisit the case of a fixed coupling, for which we obtain exact solutions valid for generic values of the transverse momentum (above the medium saturation scale) and corresponding to various initial conditions. In the case of a running coupling, we construct approximate solutions in the form of truncated series obtained via successive iterations, whose convergence is well under control.…
The jet quenching parameter describes the momentum broadening of a high-energy parton moving through the quark-gluon plasma. Following an approach originally proposed by Caron-Huot, we discuss how one can extract information on the collision kernel associated with the parton momentum broadening, from the analysis of certain gauge-invariant operators in dimensionally reduced effective theories, and present numerical results from a lattice study.
The average transverse momentum transfer per unit path length to a fast parton scattering elastically in a perturbative quark-gluon plasma is related to the radiative energy loss of the parton. We first calculate the momentum transfer coefficient $\hat q$ in terms of a classical Langevin problem and then define it quantum-mechanically through scattering matrix element. After treating the well known case of a quark-gluon plasma in equilibrium we consider an off-equilibrium unstable plasma. As a specific example, we treat the two-stream plasma with unstable modes of longitudinal chromoelectric f…
We consider momentum broadening and energy loss of high momentum partons in a hot non-Abelian plasma due to collisions. We solve the coupled system of Wong-Yang-Mills equations on a lattice in real time, including binary hard elastic collisions among the partons. The collision kernel is constructed such that the total collisional energy loss and momentum broadening are lattice spacing independent. We find that the transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ corresponding to transverse momentum broadening receives sizable contributions from a power-law tail in the $p_\perp$-distribution of high-momentum pa…
The relation between the specific shear viscosity $η/s$ and the dimensionless jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}/T^3$ in perturbative QCD is explored at next-to-leading order in the coupling constant. It is shown that the relation changes little, although both transport coefficients independently are subject to large modifications at the NLO level. This finding confirms that the relationship is robust.
We consider the bremsstrahlung energy loss of high energy partons moving in the quark-gluon plasma, at weak coupling. We show that the rates for these processes receive large O(g) corrections from classical (nonabelian) plasma physics effects, which are calculated. In the high-energy (deep LPM) regime these corrections can be absorbed in a change of the transverse momentum broadening coefficient $\hat{q}$, which we give to the next-to-leading order. The correction is large even at relatively weak couplings $α_s\sim 0.1$, as is typically found for such effects, signaling difficulties with the p…
