It is speculated that a merger of two massive stellar-origin BHs in a dense stellar environment may lead to the formation of a massive BH in the pair-instability mass gap (50-135 Msun). Such a merger-formed BH is expected to typically have a high spin (a=0.7). If such a massive BH acquires another BH it may lead to another merger detectable by LIGO/Virgo in gravitational waves. Acquiring a companion may be hindered by gravitational-wave kick/recoil, which accompanies the first merger and may quickly remove the massive BH from its parent globular or nuclear cluster. We test whether it is possible for a massive merger-formed BH in the pair-instability gap to be retained in its parent cluster and have low spin. Such a BH would be indistinguishable from a primordial BH. We employed results from numerical relativity calculations of black hole mergers to explore the range of gravitational-wave recoil velocities for various combinations of merging BH masses and spins. We compared merger-formed massive BH speeds with typical escape velocities from globular and nuclear clusters. We show that a globular cluster is highly unlikely to form and retain a 100 Msun BH if the spin of the BH is low (a<0.3) as such BHs acquire high recoil speeds (>200 km/s) that exceed typical escape speeds from globular clusters (50 km/s). However, a very low-spinning (a=0.1) and massive (100 Msun) BH could be formed and retained in a galactic nuclear star cluster. Even though such massive merger-formed BHs with such low spins acquire high speeds during formation (400 km/s), they may avoid ejection since massive nuclear clusters have high escape velocities (300-500 km/s). A future detection of a massive BH in the pair-instability mass gap with low spin would therefore not be proof of the existence of primordial BHs, which are sometimes claimed to have low spins and arbitrarily high masses.
White dwarfs typically have masses in a narrow range centered at about 0.6 solar masses (Msun). Only a few ultra-massive white dwarfs (M>1.2 Msun) are known. Those in binary systems are of particular interest because a small amount of accreted mass could drive them above the Chandrasekhar limit, beyond which they become gravitationally unstable. Using data from the XMM-Newton satellite, we show that the X-ray pulsator RX J0648.0-4418 is a white dwarf with mass > 1.2 Msun, based only on dynamical measurements. This ultra-massive white dwarf in a post-common envelope binary with a hot subdwarf c…
Numerical simulations of the force-free magnetodynamics (FFMD) of the electromagnetic field around a spinning black hole are useful to investigate the dynamic electromagnetic processes around a spinning black hole, such as the emergence of the Blandford--Znajek mechanism. To reveal the basic physics of magnetic fields around a black hole through the dynamic process, we use one-dimensional (1D) FFMD along the axisymmetric magnetic surface, which provides a relatively simple, sufficiently precise, and powerful tool to analyze the dynamic process around a spinning black hole. We review the analyt…
Accretion onto black holes in wind-fed binaries and in collapsars forms small rotating discs with peculiar properties. Such ``mini-discs'' accrete on the free-fall time without help of viscosity and nevertheless can have a high radiative efficiency. The inviscid mini-disc model was previously constructed for a non-rotating black hole. We extend the model to the case of a spinning black hole, calculate the structure and radiative efficiency of the disc and find their dependence on the black hole spin. If the angular momenta of the disc and the black hole are anti-aligned, a hydrodynamic analog …
In the general accretion disk model theory, the accretion disk surrounding an astronomical object comprises fluid rings obeying Keplerian motion. However, we should consider relativistic and rotational effects as we close in toward the center of accretion disk surrounding spinning compact massive objects such as a black hole or a neutron star. In this study, we explore the geometry of the inner portion of the accretion disk in the context of Mukhopadhyay's pseudo Newtonian potential approximation for the full general relativity theory. We found that the shape of the accretion disk "puffs up" o…
The Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB) is the total emission from past accretion activity onto supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and peaks in the hard X-ray band (30 keV). In this paper, we identify a significant selection effect operating on the CXB and flux-limited AGN surveys, and outline how they must depend heavily on the spin distribution of black holes. We show that, due to the higher radiative efficiency of rapidly-spinning black holes, they will be over-represented in the X-ray background, and therefore could be a dominant contributor to the CXB. Using a simple bimod…
We present the results of a new series of global 3D relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of thin accretion disks around spinning black holes. The disks have aspect ratios of $H/R\sim 0.05$ and spin parameters $a/M=0, 0.5, 0.9$, and $0.99$. Using the ray-tracing code Pandurata, we generate broad-band thermal spectra and polarization signatures from the MHD simulations. We find that the simulated spectra can be well fit with a simple, universal emissivity profile that better reproduces the behavior of the emission from the inner disk, compared to traditional analyses carried out u…
In this paper, we investigate the magnetohydrodynamical structure of a jet powered by a spinning black hole, where electromagnetic fields and fluid motion are governed by the Grad-Shafranov equation and the Bernoulli equation, respectively. Assuming steady and axisymmetric jet structure, the global solution is uniquely determined with prescribed plasma loading into the jet and the poloidal shape of the outmost magnetic field line. We apply this model to the jet in the center of nearby radio galaxy M87, and we find it can naturally explain the slow flow acceleration and the flow velocity strati…
We study the process of spinning up black holes by accretion from slim disks in a wide range of accretion rates. We show that for super-Eddington accretion rates and low values of the viscosity parameter alpha (\lesssim 0.01) the limiting value of the dimensionless spin parameter a_* can reach values higher than a_*=0.9978 inferred by Thorne (1974) in his seminal study. For \mdot=10\mdot_{Edd} and alpha=0.01 spin equilibrium is reached at a_*=0.9994. We show that the equilibrium spin value depends strongly on the assumed value of alpha. We also prove that for high accretion rates the impact of…
We revisit the problem of a spinning black hole immersed in a uniformly magnetized plasma within the context of force-free electrodynamics. Such configurations have been found to relax to stationary jetlike solutions that are powered by the rotational energy of the black hole. We write down an analytic description for the jet solutions in the low black hole spin limit, and demonstrate that it provides a good approximation to the configurations found dynamically. For characterizing the magnetospheres of rapidly spinning black holes, we find that the current sheet which forms in the black hole e…
We perform a full 3D general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical (GRMHD) simulation of an equal-mass, spinning, binary black hole approaching merger, surrounded by a circumbinary disk and with mini-disks around each black hole. For this purpose, we evolve the ideal GRMHD equations on top of an approximated spacetime for the binary that is valid in every position of space, including the black hole horizons, during the inspiral regime. We use relaxed initial data for the circumbinary disk from a previous long-term simulation, where the accretion is dominated by an $m=1$ overdensity called the lum…
GW200115 was the second merger of a black hole and a neutron star confidently detected through gravitational waves. Inference on the signal allows for a large black hole spin misaligned with the orbital angular momentum, but shows little support for aligned spin values. We show that this is a natural consequence of measuring the parameters of a black hole -- neutron star binary with non-spinning components while assuming the priors used in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA analysis. We suggest that, a priori, a non-spinning binary is more consistent with current astrophysical understanding.
To understand the true nature of black holes, fundamental theoretical developments should be linked all the way to observational features of black holes in their natural astrophysical environments. Here, we take several steps to establish such a link. We construct a family of spinning, regular black-hole spacetimes based on a locality principle for new physics and analyze their shadow images. We identify characteristic image features associated to regularity (increased compactness and relative stretching) and to the locality principle (cusps and asymmetry) that persist in the presence of a sim…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) from the early Universe constitute a viable dark matter (DM) candidate and can span many orders of magnitude in mass. Light PBHs with masses around $10^{15}$ g contribute to DM and will efficiently evaporate through Hawking radiation at present time, leading to a slew of observable signatures. The emission will deposit energy and heat in the surrounding interstellar medium. We revisit the constraints from dwarf galaxy heating by evaporating non-spinning PBHs and find that conservative constraints from Leo T dwarf galaxy are significantly weaker than previously sug…
It has long been known that a maximally spinning black hole can not be over-spun by tossing in a test body. Here we show that if instead the black hole starts out with below maximal spin, then indeed over-spinning can be achieved when adding either orbital or spin angular momentum. We find that requirements on the size and internal structure of the test body can be met as well. Our analysis neglects radiative and self-force effects, which may prevent the over-spinning.
It has recently been proved numerically that spinning black holes in Einstein-scalar theories which are characterized by a non-minimal negative coupling of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant of the curved spacetime may develop exponentially growing instabilities. Intriguingly, it has been demonstrated that this tachyonic instability, which marks the onset of the spontaneous scalarization phenomenon in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-scalar theory, characterizes spinning black holes whose dimensionless angular momentum parameter ${\bar a}\equiv a/M$ is larger than some critical value ${\b…
Spinning Kerr black holes are known to be superradiantly unstable to massive scalar perturbations. We here prove that the instability regime of the composed Kerr-black-hole-massive-scalar-field system is bounded from above by the dimensionless inequality $Mμ< m \cdot \sqrt{{{2(1+γ) (1-\sqrt{1-γ^2}) - γ^2} \over {4γ^2}}}$, where $\{μ,m\}$ are respectively the proper mass and azimuthal harmonic index of the scalar field and $γ\equiv r_-/r_+$ is the dimensionless ratio between the horizon radii of the black hole. It is further shown that this {\it analytically} derived upper bound on the superrad…
Recent work paints a conflicting portrait of the distribution of black hole spins in merging binaries measured with gravitational waves. Some analyses find that a significant fraction of merging binaries contain at least one black hole with a spin tilt $>90^\circ$ with respect to the orbital angular momentum vector, which has been interpreted as a signature for dynamical assembly. Other analyses find the data are consistent with a bimodal population in which some binaries contain black holes with negligible spin while the rest contain black holes with spin vectors preferentially aligned with t…
We performed one-dimensional force-free magnetodynamic numerical simulations of the propagation of Alfven waves along magnetic field lines around a spinning black-hole-like object, the Banados--Teitelboim--Zanelli black string, to investigate the dynamic process of wave propagation and energy transport with Alfven waves. We considered axisymmetric and stationary magnetosphere and perturbed the background magnetosphere to obtain the linear wave equation for the Alfven wave mode. The numerical results show that the energy of Alfven waves monotonically increases as the waves propagate outwardly a…
On the basis of the Kerr metric as a model for a spinning black hole accreting test particles from rest at infinity, I show that the center-of-mass energy for a pair of colliding particles is generically divergent at the inner horizon. This shows that not only are classical black holes internally unstable, but also that Planck-scale physics is a characteristic feature within black holes at scales much larger that the Planck length. The novel feature of the divergence discussed here is that the phenomenon is present only for black holes with rotation and in this sense it is distinct from the we…
We study the circularization of tidally disrupted stars on bound orbits around spinning supermassive black holes by performing three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations with Post-Newtonian corrections. Our simulations reveal that debris circularization depends sensitively on the efficiency of radiative cooling. There are two stages in debris circularization if radiative cooling is inefficient: first, the stellar debris streams self-intersect due to relativistic apsidal precession; shocks at the intersection points thermalize orbital energy and the debris forms a geometricall…
We demonstrate that numerical relativity codes based on the moving punctures formalism are capable of evolving nearly maximally spinning black hole binaries. We compare a new evolution of an equal-mass, aligned-spin binary with dimensionless spin chi=0.99 using puncture-based data with recent simulations of the SXS Collaboration. We find that the overlap of our new waveform with the published results of the SXS Collaboration is larger than 0.999. To generate our new waveform, we use the recently introduced HiSpID puncture data, the CCZ4 evolution system, and a modified lapse condition that hel…
We describe a new numerical algorithm for ray tracing in the external spacetimes of spinning compact objects characterized by arbitrary quadrupole moments. Such spacetimes describe non-Kerr vacuum solutions that can be used to test the no-hair theorem in conjunction with observations of accreting black holes. They are also appropriate for neutron stars with spin frequencies in the 300-600 Hz range, which are typical of the bursting sources in low-mass X-ray binaries. We use our algorithm to show that allowing for the quadrupole moment of the spacetime to take arbitrary values leads to observab…
We reviewed the Ba\u nados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole solution in connection with the spinning string solution. We find a new exact solution, which can be related to the $(2+1)$-dimensional spinning point particle solution. There is no need for a cosmological constant, so the solution can be up-lifted to $(3+1)$ dimensions. The exact solution in a conformal invariant gravity model, where the spacetime is written as $g_{μν}=ω^2 \tilde g_{μν}$, is horizon free and has an ergo-circle, while $\tilde g_{μν}$ is the BTZ solution. The dilaton $ω$ determines the scale of the model. In accorda…
We study analytically the Klein-Gordon wave equation for stationary massive scalar fields linearly coupled to spinning Kerr black holes. In particular, using the WKB approximation, we derive a compact formula for the discrete spectrum of scalar field masses which characterize the stationary composed Kerr-black-hole-massive-scalar-field configurations in the large-coupling regime $Mμ\gg1$ (here $M$ and $μ$ are respectively the mass of the central black hole and the proper mass of the scalar field). We confirm our analytically derived formula for the Kerr-scalar-field mass spectrum with numerica…
Stellar mass black holes (SMBHs), forming by the core collapse of very massive, rapidly rotating stars, are expected to exhibit a high density accretion disk around them developed from the spinning mantle of the collapsing star. A wide class of such disks, due to their high density and temperature, are effective emitters of neutrinos and hence called neutrino cooled disks. Tracking the physics relating the observed (neutrino) luminosity to the mass, spin of black holes (BHs) and the accretion rate (M_dot) of such disks, here we establish a correlation between the spin and mass of SMBHs at thei…
For non-spinning, charged (Reissner-Nordström) black holes, the particles with an opposite sign of charge with respect to that of the black hole will be pulled into the black hole by the extra electromagnetic force. Such a hole will be quickly neutralized so that there should not exist significantly charged, non-spinning black holes in the universe. The case of spinning, charged (Kerr-Newmann) black holes is more complicated. For a given initial position and initial velocity of the particle, an oppositely charged particle does not always more easily fall into the black hole than a neutral part…
The ``cosmic censorship conjecture'' asserts that all singularities arising from gravitational collapse are hidden within black holes. We investigate this conjecture in a setup of interest for tests of General Relativity: black hole solutions which are parametrically small deviations away from the Kerr solution. These solutions have an upper bound on rotation, beyond which a naked singularity is visible to outside observers. We study whether these (generic) spacetimes can be spun-up past extremality with point particles or accretion disks. Our results show that cosmic censorship is preserved f…
We construct a new global, fully analytic, approximate spacetime which accurately describes the dynamics of non-precessing, spinning black hole binaries during the inspiral phase of the relativistic merger process. This approximate solution of the vacuum Einstein's equations can be obtained by asymptotically matching perturbed Kerr solutions near the two black holes to a post-Newtonian metric valid far from the two black holes. This metric is then matched to a post-Minkowskian metric even farther out in the wave zone. The procedure of asymptotic matching is generalized to be valid on all spati…
It has recently been revealed that spinning black holes of the photon-fluid model can support acoustic `clouds', stationary density fluctuations whose spatially regular radial eigenfunctions are determined by the $(2+1)$-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation of an effective massive scalar field. Motivated by this intriguing observation, we use {\it analytical} techniques in order to prove a no-short hair theorem for the composed acoustic-black-hole-scalar-clouds configurations. In particular, it is proved that the effective lengths of the stationary bound-state co-rotating acoustic scalar clouds a…
We study the superradiant instability of massive vector fields, i.e. Proca fields, around spinning black holes in the test field limit. This is motivated by the possibility that observations of astrophysical black holes can probe the existence of ultralight bosons subject to this mechanism. By making use of time-domain simulations, we characterize the growth rate, frequency, spatial distribution, and other properties of the unstable modes, including in the regime where the black hole is rapidly spinning and the Compton wavelength of the Proca field is comparable to the black hole radius. We fi…
The intriguing superradiant amplification phenomenon allows an orbiting scalar field to extract rotational energy from a spinning Kerr black hole. Interestingly, the energy extraction rate can grow exponentially in time if the black-hole-field system is placed inside a reflecting mirror which prevents the field from radiating its energy to infinity. This composed Kerr-black-hole-scalar-field-mirror system, first designed by Press and Teukolsky, has attracted the attention of physicists over the last four decades. Previous numerical studies of this spinning {\it black-hole bomb} have revealed t…
Primordial black holes can have substantial spin -- a fundamental property that has a strong effect on its evaporation rate. We conduct a comprehensive study of the detectability of primordial black holes with non-negligible spin, via the searches for the neutrinos and positrons in the MeV energy range. Diffuse supernova neutrino background searches and observation of the 511 keV gamma-ray line from positrons in the Galactic center set competitive constraints. Spinning primordial black holes are probed up to a slightly higher mass range compared to non-spinning ones. Our constraint using neutr…
We briefly discuss a method to construct a global, analytic, approximate spacetime for precessing, spinning binary black holes. The spacetime construction is broken into three parts: the inner zones are the spacetimes close to each black hole, and are approximated by perturbed Kerr solutions; the near zone is far from the two black holes, and described by the post-Newtonian metric; and finally the wave (far) zone, where retardation effects need to be taken into account, is well modeled by the post-Minkowskian metric. These individual spacetimes are then stitched together using asymptotic match…
It is shown that in the Schwarzschild background there exists direct counterpart of the Bañados-Silk-West effect for spinning particles. This means that if two particles collide near the black hole horizon, their energy in the centre of mass frame can grow unbounded. In doing so, the crucial role is played by so-called near-critical trajectories when particle's parameters are almost fine-tuned. Direct scenario of the collision under discussion is possible with restriction on the energy-to-mass ratio \thinspace $E/m<\frac{1}{2\sqrt{3}}$ only. However, if one takes into account multiple scatteri…
The open question of whether a black hole can become tidally deformed by an external gravitational field has profound implications for fundamental physics, astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy. Love tensors characterize the tidal deformability of compact objects such as astrophysical (Kerr) black holes under an external static tidal field. We prove that all Love tensors vanish identically for a Kerr black hole in the nonspinning limit or for an axisymmetric tidal perturbation. In contrast to this result, we show that Love tensors are generically nonzero for a spinning black hole. Spec…
It has recently been pointed out that particles falling freely from rest at infinity outside a Kerr black hole can in principle collide with arbitrarily high center of mass energy in the limiting case of maximal black hole spin. Here we aim to elucidate the mechanism for this fascinating result, and to point out its practical limitations, which imply that ultra-energetic collisions cannot occur near black holes in nature.
Detection of the global 21 cm signal arising from neutral hydrogen can revolutionize our understanding of the standard evolution of the universe after recombination. In addition, it can also be an excellent probe of Dark Matter (DM). Among all the DM candidates, Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) are one of the most well-motivated. Hawking emission from low-mass PBHs can have substantial effect on the thermal and ionization history of the early universe, and that in turn can have an imprint on the global 21 cm signal. Recently EDGES has claimed a global 21 cm signal, though SARAS 3 has rejected tha…
Since it was theorized by Kerr in 1963, determining the spin of black holes from observed data was paid very little attention until few years back. The main reasons behind this were the unavailability of adequate data and the lack of appropriate techniques. In this article, we explore determining/predicting the spin of several black holes in X-ray binaries and in the center of galaxies, using X-ray and gamma-ray satellite data. For X-ray binaries, in order to explain observed quasi-periodic oscillations, our model predicts the spin parameter of underlying black holes. On the other hand, the na…
It has for long been an article of faith among astrophysicists that black hole spin energy is responsible for powering the relativistic jets seen in accreting black holes. Two recent advances have strengthened the case. First, numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accreting spinning black holes show that relativistic jets form spontaneously. In at least some cases, there is unambiguous evidence that much of the jet energy comes from the black hole, not the disk. Second, spin parameters of a number of accreting stellar-mass black holes have been measured. For ballist…
