In this paper, we investigate the magnetohydrodynamical structure of a jet powered by a spinning black hole, where electromagnetic fields and fluid motion are governed by the Grad-Shafranov equation and the Bernoulli equation, respectively. Assuming steady and axisymmetric jet structure, the global solution is uniquely determined with prescribed plasma loading into the jet and the poloidal shape of the outmost magnetic field line. We apply this model to the jet in the center of nearby radio galaxy M87, and we find it can naturally explain the slow flow acceleration and the flow velocity stratification within $10^5$ gravitational radii from the central black hole. In particular, we find the extremal black hole spin is disfavored by the flow velocity measurements, if the plasma loading to the jet is dominated by the electron/positron pair production at the jet base.
In this paper, we construct a framework for investigating magnetohydrodynamical jet structure of spinning black holes (BHs), where electromagnetic fields and fluid motion are governed by the Grad-Shafranov equation and the Bernoulli equation, respectively. Assuming steady and axisymmetric jet structure, we can self-consistently obtain electromagnetic fields, fluid energy density and velocity within the jet, given proper plasma loading and boundary conditions. Specifically, we structure the two coupled governing equations as two eigenvalue problems, and develop full numerical techniques for sol…
We present the results of a new series of global 3D relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of thin accretion disks around spinning black holes. The disks have aspect ratios of $H/R\sim 0.05$ and spin parameters $a/M=0, 0.5, 0.9$, and $0.99$. Using the ray-tracing code Pandurata, we generate broad-band thermal spectra and polarization signatures from the MHD simulations. We find that the simulated spectra can be well fit with a simple, universal emissivity profile that better reproduces the behavior of the emission from the inner disk, compared to traditional analyses carried out u…
We present a survey of optical [OI] emission at 6300 Å toward 65 TTauri stars at the spectral resolution of $\sim7$ km/s. Past work identified a highly blueshifted velocity component (HVC) tracing microjets, and a less blueshifted low-velocity-component (LVC) attributed to winds. We focus here on the LVC kinematics to investigate links between winds, jets, accretion, and disk dispersal. We track the behavior of four types of LVC components: a broad and narrow component ("BC" and "NC") in LVCs that are decomposed into two Gaussians, which typically have an HVC, and the single-Gaussian LVC profi…
We construct a semi-analytic model for MHD flows in Kerr geometry, that incorporates energy loading via neutrino annihilation on magnetic field lines threading the horizon. We compute the double-flow structure for a wide range of energy injection rates, and identify the different operation regimes. At low injection rates the outflow is powered by the spinning black hole via the Blandford-Znajek mechanism, whereas at high injection rates it is driven by the pressure of the plasma deposited on magnetic field lines. In the intermediate regime both processes contribute to the outflow formation. Th…
We investigate the accretion induced spin up of the black hole via numerical simulations. Our method is based on general-relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics of the slowly-rotating flows in the Kerr metric, where possibly transonic shock fronts may form. We account for the changing black hole mass and spin during accretion which enforces dynamical evolution of the space-time metric. We first study non-magnetized flows with shocks, and we also include magnetic field endowed in the gas. The aim of this study is to verify whether the high mass black holes may be produced with large spins, even thou…
This is the fourth paper of our series of works studying winds from hot accretion flows around black holes. In the first two papers, we have shown the existence of strong winds in hot accretion flows using hydrodynamical and magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations. In the third paper, by using three dimensional general relativity MHD numerical simulation data of hot accretion flows and adopting a "virtual particle trajectory" data analysis approach, we have calculated the properties of wind, such as its mass flux and velocity. However, that paper focuses only on a non-spinning black hole and S…
We present a new computational method for smoothly matching general relativistic ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) to its force-free limit. The method is based on a flux-conservative formalism for MHD and its force-free limit, and a vector potential formulation for the induction equation to maintain the zero divergence constraint for the magnetic field. The force-free formulation we adopt evolves the magnetic field and the Poynting vector, instead of the magnetic and electric fields. We show that our force-free code passes a robust suite of tests, performed both in 1D flat spacetime and in 3D b…
According to magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models, the rotational energy of a rapidly spinning neutron star is carried away by a relativistic wind and deposited at a large distance, in the nebula, downstream of the wind termination shock. The energy transport in the outflow is mediated by Poynting flux, but it is not clear how the energy stored in the fields is transferred into the energized population of emitting particles. The most plausible dissipation mechanisms are thought to be related to the "striped" structure of the wind, in particular, to the existence of a current sheet, prone to reconn…
Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging of radio emission from extragalactic jets provides a unique probe of physical mechanisms governing the launching, acceleration, and collimation of relativistic outflows. The two-dimensional structure and kinematics of the jet in M\,87 (NGC\,4486) have been studied by applying the Wavelet-based Image Segmentation and Evaluation (WISE) method to 11 images obtained from multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations made in January-August 2007 at 43 GHz ($λ= 7$ mm). The WISE analysis recovers a detailed two-dimensional velocity field in t…
Gas falling into a black hole (BH) from large distances is unaware of BH spin direction, and misalignment between the accretion disc and BH spin is expected to be common. However, the physics of tilted discs (e.g., angular momentum transport and jet formation) is poorly understood. Using our new GPU-accelerated code H-AMR, we performed 3D general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of tilted thick accretion discs around rapidly spinning BHs, at the highest resolution to date. We explored the limit where disc thermal pressure dominates magnetic pressure, and showed for the first time t…
Measurements of black hole spin made using the continuum-fitting method rely on the assumption that the inclination of the black hole's spin axis to our line of sight is the same as the orbital inclination angle of the host binary system. The X=ray and radio jet data available for the microquasar XTE J1550-564 offer a rare opportunity to test this assumption. Following the work of others, we have modeled these data and thereby determined the inclination angle of the jet axis, which is presumed to be aligned with the black hole's spin axis. We find a jet inclination angle of approximately 71 de…
We present general relativistic radiation MHD simulations of super-Eddington accretion on a $10M_\odot$ black hole. We consider a range of mass accretion rates, black hole spins, and magnetic field configurations. We compute the spectra and images of the models as a function of viewing angle, and compare them with the observed properties of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). The models easily produce apparent luminosities in excess of $10^{40}~{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$ for pole-on observers. However, the angle-integrated radiative luminosities rarely exceed $2.5\times10^{39}~{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$ even …
In astronomy, the problem of black holes is arguably second in importance only to the problem of cosmology. A current frontier in black hole research is the measurement of spin. During the past three years, the spins of several stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries have been measured via two techniques: fitting the X-ray continuum spectrum and modeling the profile of the Fe K line. This fledgling enterprise motivates the following decadal goals: (1) Firmly establish the continuum-fitting and Fe K methods; obtain precise values of spin for 10-20 black holes, several using both methods; (2)…
As 2 black holes bound to each other in a close binary approach merger their inspiral time becomes shorter than the characteristic inflow time of surrounding orbiting matter. Using an innovative technique in which we represent the changing spacetime in the region occupied by the orbiting matter with a 2.5PN approximation and the binary orbital evolution with 3.5PN, we have simulated the MHD evolution of a circumbinary disk surrounding an equal-mass non-spinning binary. Prior to the beginning of the inspiral, the structure of the circumbinary disk is predicted well by extrapolation from Newtoni…
Supermassive black holes at the centre of galactic nuclei mostly grow in mass through gas accretion over cosmic time. This process also modifies the angular momentum (or spin) of black holes, both in magnitude and in orientation. Despite being often neglected in galaxy formation simulations, spin plays a crucial role in modulating accretion power, driving jet feedback, and determining recoil velocity of coalescing black hole binaries. We present a new accretion model for the moving-mesh code {\sc arepo} that incorporates (i) mass accretion through a thin $α$-disc, and (ii) spin evolution throu…
Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) allows for high-resolution and high-sensitivity observations of relativistic jets, that can reveal periodicities of several years in their structure. We perform an analysis of long-term VLBI data of the quasar S5 1928+738 in terms of a geometric model of a helical structure projected onto the plane of the sky. We monitor the direction of the jet axis through its inclination and position angles. We decompose the variation of the inclination of the inner 2 milliarcseconds of the jet of S5 1928+738 into a periodic term with amplitude of ~0.89 deg and a lin…
Recent general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of accretion onto black holes have shown that, contrary to the basic assumptions of the Novikov-Thorne model, there can be substantial magnetic stress throughout the plunging region. Additional dissipation and radiation can therefore be expected. We use data from a particularly well-resolved simulation of accretion onto a non-spinning black hole to compute both the radiative efficiency of such a flow and its spectrum if all emitted light is radiated with a thermal spectrum whose temperature matches the local effective temperatu…
We present results from the first fully general relativistic, magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of an equal-mass black hole binary (BHBH) in a magnetized, circumbinary accretion disk. We simulate both the pre and post-decoupling phases of a BHBH-disk system and both "cooling" and "no-cooling" gas flows. Prior to decoupling, the competition between the binary tidal torques and the effective viscous torques due to MHD turbulence depletes the disk interior to the binary orbit. However, it also induces a two-stream accretion flow and mildly relativistic polar outflows from the BHs. Following…
GW200115 is one of the first two confidently detected gravitational-wave events of neutron star-black hole mergers. An interesting property of this merger is that the black hole, if spinning rapidly, has its spin axis negatively aligned (with a misalignment angle $> 90^{\circ}$) with the binary orbital angular momentum vector. Although such a large spin-orbit misalignment angle naturally points toward a dynamical origin, the measured neutron star-black hole merger rate exceeds theoretical predictions of the dynamical formation channel. In the canonical isolated binary formation scenario, the i…
