To understand the true nature of black holes, fundamental theoretical developments should be linked all the way to observational features of black holes in their natural astrophysical environments. Here, we take several steps to establish such a link. We construct a family of spinning, regular black-hole spacetimes based on a locality principle for new physics and analyze their shadow images. We identify characteristic image features associated to regularity (increased compactness and relative stretching) and to the locality principle (cusps and asymmetry) that persist in the presence of a simple analytical disk model. We conjecture that these occur as universal features of distinct classes of regular black holes based on different sets of construction principles for the corresponding spacetimes.
Current observations present unprecedented opportunities to probe the true nature of black holes, which must harbor new physics beyond General Relativity to provide singularity-free descriptions. To test paradigms for this new physics, it is necessary to bridge the gap all the way from theoretical developments of new-physics models to phenomenological developments such as simulated images of black holes embedded in astrophysical disk environments. In this paper, we construct several steps along this bridge. We construct a novel family of regular black-hole spacetimes based on a locality princi…
Boost-rotation symmetric vacuum spacetimes with spinning sources which correspond to gravitational field of uniformly accelerated spinning "particles" are studied. Regularity conditions and asymptotic properties are analyzed. News functions are derived by transforming the general spinning boost-rotation symmetric vacuum metric to Bondi-Sachs coordinates.

We construct rotating black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a quadratic coupling function. We map the domain of existence of the rotating fundamental solutions, we construct radially excited rotating black holes (including their existence lines), and we show that there are angularly excited rotating black holes. The bifurcation points of the radially and angularly excited solutions branching out of the Schwarzschild solution follow a regular pattern.

It has recently been revealed that spinning black holes of the photon-fluid model can support acoustic `clouds', stationary density fluctuations whose spatially regular radial eigenfunctions are determined by the $(2+1)$-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation of an effective massive scalar field. Motivated by this intriguing observation, we use {\it analytical} techniques in order to prove a no-short hair theorem for the composed acoustic-black-hole-scalar-clouds configurations. In particular, it is proved that the effective lengths of the stationary bound-state co-rotating acoustic scalar clouds a…
Spinning black holes in dynamical Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity are constructed by directly solving the field equations, without resorting to any perturbative expansion. This model is obtained by adding to the Einstein-Hilbert action a particular higher-curvature correction: the Pontryagin density, linearly coupled to a scalar field. The spinning black holes are stationary, axi-symmetric, asymptotically flat generalisations of the Kerr solution of Einstein's gravity, but they possess a non-trivial (odd-parity) scalar field. They are regular on and outside the horizon and satisfy a generalized …
We present an analytic computation of Detweiler's redshift invariant for a point mass in a circular orbit around a Kerr black hole, giving results up to 8.5 post-Newtonian order while making no assumptions on the magnitude of the spin of the black hole. Our calculation is based on the functional series method of Mano, Suzuki and Takasugi, and employs a rigorous mode-sum regularization prescription based on the Detweiler-Whiting singular-regular decomposition. The approximations used in our approach are minimal; we use the standard self-force expansion to linear order in the mass ratio, and the…
According to the no-hair theorem, astrophysical black holes are uniquely characterized by their masses and spins and are described by the Kerr metric. Several parametric deviations from the Kerr metric have been suggested to study observational signatures in both the electromagnetic and gravitational-wave spectra that differ from the expected Kerr signals. Due to the no-hair theorem, however, such spacetimes cannot be regular everywhere outside the event horizons, if they are solutions to the Einstein field equations; they are often characterized by naked singularities or closed time-like loop…
We study a method to solve stationary axisymmetric vacuum Einstein equations numerically. As an illustration, the five-dimensional doubly spinning black rings that have two independent angular momenta are formulated in a way suitable for fully nonlinear numerical method. Expanding for small second angular velocity, the formulation is solved perturbatively upto second order involving the backreaction from the second spin. The obtained solutions are regular without conical singularity, and the physical properties are discussed with the phase diagram of the reduced entropy vs the reduced angular …
We employ a recently developed mode-sum regularization method to compute the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a quantum field in the Kerr background metric (describing a stationary spinning black hole). More specifically, we consider a minimally-coupled massless scalar field in the Unruh vacuum state, the quantum state corresponding to an evaporating black hole. The computation is done here for the case $a=0.7M$, using two different variants of the method: $t$-splitting and $φ$-splitting, yielding good agreement between the two (in the domain where both are applicable). We briefly discuss …
An exact and regular solution, describing a couple of charged and spinning black holes, is generated in an external electromagnetic field, via Ernst technique, in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. A wormhole instantonic solution interpolating between the two black holes is constructed to discuss, at the semi-classical level, the quantum process of creation rate, in an external magnetic field, of this charged and spinning black hole pair.
We consider particlelike solutions to supergravity based on the Kerr-Newman black hole (BH) solution. The BH singularity is regularized by means of a phase transition to a new vacuum state near the core region confining a dual gauge field. Supersymmetric BPS-saturated domain wall model is suggested which can provide this phase transition and formation the stable charged superconducting core. For spinning particle the core takes the form of thin, relativistically rotaiting disk.
Inspirals of stellar mass compact objects into supermassive black holes are known as extreme mass ratio inspirals. In the simplest approximation, the motion of the compact object is modeled as a geodesic in the space-time of the massive black hole with the orbit decaying due to radiated energy and angular momentum, thus yielding a highly regular inspiral. However, once the spin of the secondary compact body is taken into account, integrability is broken and prolonged resonances along with chaotic motion appear. We numerically integrate the motion of a spinning test body in the field of a non-s…
We obtain spinning boson star solutions and hairy black holes with synchronised hair in the Einstein-Klein-Gordon model, wherein the scalar field is massive, complex and with a non-minimal coupling to the Ricci scalar. The existence of these hairy black holes in this model provides yet another manifestation of the universality of the synchronisation mechanism to endow spinning black holes with hair. We study the variation of the physical properties of the boson stars and hairy black holes with the coupling parameter between the scalar field and the curvature, showing that they are, qualitative…
We present an investigation of spinning black holes in Einstein--Gauss-Bonnet--dilaton (EGBd) theory. The solutions are found within a non-perturbative approach, by directly solving the field equations. These stationary axially symmetric black holes are asymptotically flat. They possess a non-trivial scalar field outside their regular event horizon. We present an overview of the parameter space of the solutions together with a study of their basic properties. We point out that the EGBd black holes can exhibit some physical differences when compared to the Kerr solution. For example, their mass…

We study solutions in the Plebański--Demiański family which describe an accelerating, rotating and dyonically charged black hole in $AdS_4$. These are solutions of $D=4$ Einstein-Maxwell theory with a negative cosmological constant and hence minimal $D=4$ gauged supergravity. It is well known that when the acceleration is non-vanishing the $D=4$ black hole metrics have conical singularities. By uplifting the solutions to $D=11$ supergravity using a regular Sasaki-Einstein $7$-manifold, $SE_7$, we show how the free parameters can be chosen to eliminate the conical singularities. Topologically, …
We construct spinning black holes (BHs) in shift-symmetric Horndeski theory. This is an Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet model wherein the (real) scalar field couples linearly to the Gauss-Bonnet curvature squared combination. The BH solutions constructed are stationary, axially symmetric and asymptotically flat. They possess a non-trivial scalar field outside their regular event horizon; thus they have scalar hair. The scalar "charge" is not, however, an independent macroscopic degree of freedom. It is proportional to the Hawking temperature, as in the static limit, wherein the BHs reduce to the …
We set out to bridge the gap between regular black-hole spacetimes and observations of a black-hole shadow by the Event Horizon Telescope. We explore modifications of spinning and non-spinning black-hole spacetimes inspired by asymptotically safe quantum gravity which features a scale dependence of the Newton coupling. As a consequence, the predictions of our model, such as the shadow shape and size, depend on one free parameter determining the curvature scale at which deviations from General Relativity set in. In more general new-physics settings, it can also depart substantially from the Pla…
The damped harmonic gauge is important for numerical relativity computations based on the generalized harmonic formulation of Einstein's equations, and is used to reduce coordinate distortions near binary black hole mergers. However, currently there is no prescription to construct quasiequilibrium binary black hole initial data in this gauge. Instead, initial data are typically constructed using a superposition of two boosted analytic single black hole solutions as free data in the solution of the constraint equations. Then, a smooth time-dependent gauge transformation is done early in the evo…
We give a review of the works devoted to the treatment of the Kerr super black hole solution as a spinning particle. The real, complex and stringy structures of the Kerr and super-Kerr geometries are discussed, as well as the recent results on the regular matter source for the Kerr spinning particle. It is shown that the source has to represent a rotating bag-like bubble having (A)dS interior and a smooth domain wall boundary. The given by Morris supersymmetric generalization of the U(I) x U'(I) field model (which was used by Witten to describe cosmic superconducting strings) is considered, an…
We study the motion of a spinning particle with gravimagnetic moment in Schwarzschild-like spacetimes with a metric $ds^2=-f(r) dt^2 + f^{-1}(r) dr^2 + r^2 dΩ^2$, specifically we deal with Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom black holes as well as Ayon-Beato-Garcia and Bardeen regular spacetimes. First, we introduce the Hamiltonian system of equations which describes such kind of particles. In the case of null gravimagnetic moment, the equations are equivalent to the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Tulczyjew-Dixon (MPTD) equations. Working in the equatorial plane, using the constants of motion generated by…

We point out that 5D large radius doubly spinning black rings with rotation along S^1 and S^2 are afflicted by a robust instability. It is triggered by superradiant bound state modes. The Kaluza-Klein momentum of the mode along the ring is responsible for the bound state. This kind of instability in black strings and branes was first suggested by Marolf and Palmer and studied in detail by Cardoso, Lemos and Yoshida. We find the frequency spectrum and timescale of this instability in the black ring background, and show that it is active for large radius rings with large rotation along S^2. We i…
Exotic compact objects, horizonless spacetimes with reflective properties, have intriguingly been suggested by some quantum-gravity models as alternatives to classical black-hole spacetimes. A remarkable feature of spinning horizonless compact objects with reflective boundary conditions is the existence of a {\it discrete} set of critical surface radii, $\{r_{\text{c}}({\bar a};n)\}^{n=\infty}_{n=1}$, which can support spatially regular static ({\it marginally-stable}) scalar field configurations (here ${\bar a}\equiv J/M^2$ is the dimensionless angular momentum of the exotic compact object). …
In this paper we construct four Kerr-like spacetimes starting from the loop black hole Schwarzschild solutions (LBH) and applying the Newman-Janis transformation. In previous papers the Schwarzschild LBH was obtained replacing the Ashtekar connection with holonomies on a particular graph in a minisuperspace approximation which describes the black hole interior. Starting from this solution, we use a Newman-Janis transformation and we specialize to two different and natural complexifications inspired from the complexifications of the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom metrics. We show explicit…
Rotating or charged classical black holes in isolation possess a special surface in their interior, the Cauchy horizon, beyond which the evolution of spacetime (based on the equations of General Relativity) ceases to be deterministic. In this work, we study the effect of a quantum massless scalar field on the Cauchy horizon inside a rotating (Kerr) black hole that is evaporating via the emission of Hawking radiation (corresponding to the field being in the Unruh state). We calculate the flux components (in Eddington coordinates) of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of the field on the Cauc…
The charged, spinning and gravitating soliton is realized as a regular solution of the Kerr-Newman field coupled with a chiral Higgs model. A regular core of the solution is formed by a domain wall bubble interpolating between the external Kerr-Newman solution and a flat superconducting interior. An internal electromagnetic (em) field is expelled to the boundary of the bubble by the Higgs field. The solution reveals two new peculiarities: (i) the Higgs field is oscillating, similar to the known oscillon models, (ii) the em field forms on the edge of the bubble a Wilson loop, resulting in quant…
Finite renormalization freedom in locally covariant quantum field theories on curved spacetime is known to be tightly constrained, under certain standard hypotheses, to the same terms as in flat spacetime up to finitely many curvature dependent terms. These hypotheses include, in particular, locality, covariance, scaling, microlocal regularity and continuous and analytic dependence on the metric and coupling parameters. The analytic dependence hypothesis is somewhat unnatural, because it requires that locally covariant observables (which are simultaneously defined on all spacetimes) depend con…
We study the properties of chaos in the motions of a spinning test particle in Schwarzschild spacetime. We characterize the chaos using the power spectrum of the time series of $z$ components of the particle's position. It is found that the pattern of the power spectrum shows not only white noise but also $1/f$-type fluctuation, depending on the value of the total angular momentum $J$ and the spin $S$ of the test particle. Therefore we succeed in classifying the chaotic motions, which have been classified as simply chaotic ones in former works, into the two distinct types. One is $1/f$, and th…
