We consider the Ihara zeta function $ζ(u,X//G)$ and Artin-Ihara $L$-function of the quotient graph of groups $X//G$, where $G$ is a group acting on a finite graph $X$ with trivial edge stabilizers. We determine the relationship between the primes of $X$ and $X//G$ and show that $X\to X//G$ can be naturally viewed as an unramified Galois covering of graphs of groups. We show that the $L$-function of $X//G$ evaluated at the regular representation is equal to $ζ(u,X)$ and that $ζ(u,X//G)$ divides $ζ(u,X)$. We derive two-term and three-term determinant formulas for the zeta and $L$-functions, and compute several examples of $L$-functions of edge-free quotients of the tetrahedron graph $K_4$.
Let $π=\{V_1,\dots,V_r\}$ be an equitable partition of the vertex set of a directed graph (digraph) $X$. It is well known that the characteristic polynomial $ϕ(X/π,x)$ of a quotient graph $X/π$ divides that of $X$, but the remainder part is not well investigated. In this paper, we define a deletion graph $X\backslashπ$ over an equitable partition $π$, which is a signed directed graph defined for a fixed set of deleting vertices $\{\bar{v}_i\in V_i, i=1,\cdots,r\}$, and give a similarity transformation exchanging the adjacency matrix $A(X)$ which is compatible with the equitable partition for a…
Stark and Terras introduced the edge zeta function of a finite graph in 1996. The edge zeta function is the reciprocal of a polynomial in twice as many variables as edges in the graph and can be computed in polynomial time. We look at graph properties which we can determine using the edge zeta function. In particular, the edge zeta function is enough to deduce the clique number, the number of Hamiltonian cycles, and whether a graph is perfect or chordal. Actually computing these properties takes exponential time. Finally, we present a new example illustrating that the Ihara zeta function canno…
In this paper we obtain a closed form expression of the zeta function $Z(X_Γ, u)$ of a finite quotient $X_Γ= Γ\backslash PGL_3(F)/PGL_3(O_F)$ of the Bruhat-Tits building of $PGL_3$ over a nonarchimedean local field $F$. Analogous to a graph zeta function, $Z(X_Γ, u)$ is a rational function and it satisfies the Riemann hypothesis if and only if $X_Γ$ is a Ramanujan complex.
We discuss two combinatorical ways of generalizing the definition of expander graphs and Ramanujan graphs, to quotients of buildings of higher dimension. The two possible definitions are equivalent for affine buildings, giving the notion of an Lp-expander complex. We calculate explicit spectral gaps on many combinatorical operators, on any Lp-expander complex. We associate with any complex a natural "zeta function", generalizing the Ihara-Hashimoto zeta function of a finite graph. We generalize a well known theorem of Hashimoto, showing that a complex is Ramanujan if and only if the zeta funct…
The Ihara expression of a weighted zeta function for a general finite digraph is given. It unifies all the Ihara expressions obtained for known zeta functions for finite digraphs. Any digraph in this paper permits multi-edges and multi-loops.
We study finite four-valent graphs Gamma admitting an edge-transitive group G of automorphisms such that G determines and preserves an edge-orientation on Gamma, and such that at least one G-normal quotient is a cycle (a quotient modulo the orbits of a normal subgroup of G). We show on the one hand that the number of distinct cyclic G-normal quotients can be unboundedly large. On the other hand existence of independent cyclic G-normal quotients (that is, they are not extendable to a common cyclic G-normal quotient) places severe restrictions on the graph Gamma and we classify all examples. We …
We show that if a graph $G$ has average degree $\bar d \geq 4$, then the Ihara zeta function of $G$ is edge-reconstructible. We prove some general spectral properties of the edge adjacency operator $T$: it is symmetric for an indefinite form and has a "large" semi-simple part (but it can fail to be semi-simple in general). We prove that this implies that if $\bar d>4$, one can reconstruct the number of non-backtracking (closed or not) walks through a given edge, the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector of $T$ (modulo a natural symmetry), as well as the closed walks that pass through a given edge in bo…
We establish a new formula for the heat kernel on regular trees in terms of classical I-Bessel functions. Although the formula is explicit, and a proof is given through direct computation, we also provide a conceptual viewpoint using the horocyclic transform on regular trees. From periodization, we then obtain a heat kernel expression on any regular graph. From spectral theory, one has another expression for the heat kernel as an integral transform of the spectral measure. By equating these two formulas and taking a certain integral transform, we obtain several generalized versions of the dete…
The Fomin-Kirillov algebra $\mathcal E_n$ is a noncommutative algebra with a generator for each edge in the complete graph on $n$ vertices. For any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, let $\mathcal E_G$ be the subalgebra of $\mathcal E_n$ generated by the edges in $G$. We show that the commutative quotient of $\mathcal E_G$ is isomorphic to the Orlik-Terao algebra of $G$. As a consequence, the Hilbert series of this quotient is given by $(-t)^n χ_G(-t^{-1})$, where $χ_G$ is the chromatic polynomial of $G$. We also give a reduction algorithm for the graded components of $\mathcal E_G$ that do not vanish…
This paper gives the quantum walks determined by graph zeta functions. The result enables us to obtain the characteristic polynomial of the transition matrix of the quantum walk, and it determines the behavior of the quantum walk. We treat finite graphs allowing multi-edges and multi-loops.
This paper generalizes Bass' work on zeta functions for uniform tree lattices. Using the theory of von Neumann algebras, machinery is developed to define the zeta function of a discrete group of automorphisms of a bounded degree tree. The main theorems relate the zeta function to determinants of operators defined on edges or vertices of the tree. A zeta function associated to a non-uniform tree lattice with appropriate Hilbert representation is defined. Zeta functions are defined for infinite graphs with a cocompact or finite covolume group action.
We introduce a zeta function of digraphs that determines, and is determined by, the spectra of all linear combinations of the adjacency matrix, its transpose, the out-degree matrix, and the in-degree matrix. In particular, zeta-equivalence of graphs encompasses simultaneous cospectrality with respect to the adjacency, the Laplacian, the signless Laplacian, and the normalized Laplacian matrix, respectively. In addition, we express zeta-equivalence in terms of Markov chains and in terms of invasions where each edge is replaced by a fixed digraph. We finish with a method for constructing zeta-equ…
We analyse the normal quotient structure of several infinite families of finite connected edge-transitive, four-valent oriented graphs. These families were singled out by Marusic and others to illustrate various different internal structures for these graphs in terms of their alternating cycles (cycles in which consecutive edges have opposite orientations). Studying the normal quotients gives fresh insights into these oriented graphs: in particular we discovered some unexpected `cross-overs' between these graph families when we formed normal quotients. We determine which of these oriented grap…
The edge-Wiener index of a connected graph $G$ is defined as the Wiener index of the line graph of $G$. In this paper it is shown that the edge-Wiener index of an edge-weighted graph can be computed in terms of the Wiener index, the edge-Wiener index, and the vertex-edge-Wiener index of weighted quotient graphs which are defined by a partition of the edge set that is coarser than $Θ^*$-partition. Thus, already known analogous methods for computing the edge-Wiener index of benzenoid systems and phenylenes are greatly generalized. Moreover, reduction theorems are developed for the edge-Wiener in…
An edge-biregular map arises as a smooth normal quotient of a unique index-two subgroup of a full triangle group acting with two edge-orbits. We give a classification of all finite edge-biregular maps on surfaces of negative prime Euler characteristic.
The weighted Szeged index and the weighted vertex-PI index of a connected graph $G$ are defined as $wSz(G) = \sum_{e=uv \in E(G)} (deg (u) + deg (v))n_u(e)n_v(e)$ and $wPI_v(G) = \sum_{e=uv \in E(G)} (deg(u) + deg(v))( n_u(e) + n_v(e))$, respectively, where $n_u(e)$ denotes the number of vertices closer to $u$ than to $v$ and $n_v(e)$ denotes the number of vertices closer to $v$ than to $u$. Moreover, the weighted edge-Szeged index and the weighted PI index are defined analogously. As the main result of this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a connected graph, then all these indices can be comput…
We introduce a quotient of Fomin-Kirillov algebra $FK(n)$ denoted $\overline{FK}_{C_n}(n)$, over the ideal generated by the edges of a complete graph on n vertexes that are missing in the $n$-cycle graph $C_n$. For this quotient algebra $\overline{FK}_{C_n}(n)$, we show that the basis is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of matchings in an $n$-cycle graph. We also prove that the dimension of $\overline{FK}_{C_n}(n)$ equals the Lucas Number $L_n$ and its Hilbert series is $q$-Lucas polynomial. We find the character map of this quotient algebra over Dihedral group $D_n$.
Given a graph with edges labeled by elements in $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$, a generalized spline is a labeling of each vertex by an integer $\mod m$ such that the labels of adjacent vertices agree modulo the label associated to the edge connecting them. These generalize the classical splines that arise in analysis as well as in a construction of equivariant cohomology often referred to as GKM-theory. We give an algorithm to produce minimum generating sets for the $\mathbb{Z}$-module of splines on connected graphs over $\mathbb{Z}/m \mathbb{Z}$. As an application, we give a quick heuristic to det…
Given a directed graph, an equivalence relation on the graph vertex set is said to be balanced if, for every two vertices in the same equivalence class, the number of directed edges from vertices of each equivalence class directed to each of the two vertices is the same. In this paper we describe the quotient and lift graphs of symmetric directed graphs associated with balanced equivalence relations on the associated vertex sets. In particular, we characterize the quotients and lifts which are also symmetric. We end with an application of these results to gradient and Hamiltonian coupled cell …
We discuss functions from edges and vertices of an undirected graph to an Abelian group. Such functions, when the sum of their values along any cycle is zero, are called balanced labelings. The set of balanced labelings forms an Abelian group. We study the structure of this group and the structure of two closely related to it groups: the subgroup of balanced labelings which consists of functions vanishing on vertices and the corresponding factor-group. This work is completely self-contained, except the algorithm for obtaining the 3-edge-connected components of an undirected graph, for which we…
We consider the ensemble of real symmetric random matrices $H^{(n,ρ)}$ obtained from the determinant form of the Ihara zeta function of random graphs that have $n$ vertices with the edge probability $ρ/n$. We prove that the normalized eigenvalue counting function of $H^{(n,ρ)}$ weakly converges in average as $n,ρ\to\infty$ and $ρ=o(n^α)$ for any $α>0$ to a shift of the Wigner semi-circle distribution. Our results support a conjecture that the large Erdos-Rényi random graphs satisfy in average the weak graph theory Riemann Hypothesis.
We introduce the concept of alternate-edge-colourings for maps, and study highly symmetric examples of such maps. Edge-biregular maps of type $(k,l)$ occur as smooth normal quotients of a particular index two subgroup of $T_{k,l}$, the full triangle group describing regular plane $(k,l)$-tessellations. The resulting colour-preserving automorphism groups can be generated by four involutions. We explore special cases when the usual four generators are not distinct involutions, with constructions relating these maps to fully regular maps. We classify edge-biregular maps when the supporting surfac…
We consider the ensemble of $N\times N$ real random symmetric matrices $H_N^{(R)}$ obtained from the determinant form of the Ihara zeta function associated to random graphs $Γ_N^{(R)}$ of the long-range percolation radius model with the edge probability determined by a function $ϕ(t)$. We show that the normalized eigenvalue counting function of $H_N^{( R)}$ weakly converges in average as $N,R\to\infty$, $R=o(N)$ to a unique measure that depends on the limiting average vertex degree of $Γ_N^{(R)}$ given by $ϕ_1 = \int ϕ(t) dt$. This measure converges in the limit of infinite $ϕ_1$ to a shift of…
A graph $G$ is said to be chordal if it has no induced cycles of length four or more. In a recent preprint Culbertson, Guralnik, and Stiller give a new characterization of chordal graphs in terms of sequences of what they call `edge-erasures'. We show that these moves are in fact equivalent to a linear quotient ordering on $I_{\overline{G}}$, the edge ideal of the complement graph. Known results imply that $I_{\overline G}$ has linear quotients if and only if $G$ is chordal, and hence this recovers an algebraic proof of their characterization. We investigate higher-dimensional analogues of thi…
We compute the Betti numbers for all the powers of initial and final lexsegment edge ideals. For the powers of the edge ideal of an anti-$d-$path, we prove that they have linear quotients and we characterize the normally torsion-free ideals. We determine a class of non-squarefree ideals, arising from some particular graphs, which are normally torsion-free.
For an integer $n\geq 2$, the triangular graph has vertex set the $2$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and edge set the pairs of $2$-subsets intersecting at one point. Such graphs are known to be halved graphs of bipartite rectagraphs, which are connected triangle-free graphs in which every $2$-path lies in a unique quadrangle. We refine this result and provide a characterisation of connected locally triangular graphs as halved graphs of normal quotients of $n$-cubes. To do so, we study a parameter that generalises the concept of minimum distance for a binary linear code to arbitrary automorphism g…
We study minimal free resolutions of edge ideals of bipartite graphs. We associate a directed graph to a bipartite graph whose edge ideal is unmixed, and give expressions for the regularity and the depth of the edge ideal in terms of invariants of the directed graph. For some classes of unmixed edge ideals, we show that the arithmetic rank of the ideal equals projective dimension of its quotient.
In this paper, we examine the structure of vertex- and edge-transitive strongly regular graphs, using normal quotient reduction. We show that the irreducible graphs in this family have quasiprimitive automorphism groups, and prove (using the Classification of Finite Simple Groups) that no graph in this family has a holomorphic simple automorphism group. We also find some constraints on the parameters of the graphs in this family that reduce to complete graphs.
We study the Koszul property of a standard graded $K$-algebra $R$ defined by the binomial edge ideal of a pair of graphs $(G_1,G_2)$. We show that the following statements are equivalent: (i) $R$ is Koszul; (ii) the defining ideal $J_{G_1,G_2}$ of $R$ has a quadratic Gröbner basis; (iii) the graded maximal ideal of $R$ has linear quotients with respect to a suitable order of its generators
We enumerate traceless square matrices over finite quotients of compact discrete valuation rings by their image sizes. We express the associated rational generating functions in terms of statistics on symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups, viz. Coxeter groups of types A and B, respectively. These rational functions may also be interpreted as local representation zeta functions associated to the members of an infinite family of finitely generated class-2-nilpotent groups. As a byproduct of our work, we obtain descriptions of the numbers of traceless square matrices over a finite field of fixed r…
The (torsion) complexity of a finite edge-weighted graph is defined to be the order of the torsion subgroup of the abelian group presented by its Laplacian matrix. When G is d-periodic (i.e., G has a free action of the rank-d free abelian group by graph automorphisms, with finite quotient) the Mahler measure of its Laplacian determinant polynomial is the growth rate of the complexity of finite quotients of G. Lehmer's question, an open question about the roots of monic integral polynomials, is equivalent to a question about the complexity growth of edge-weighted 1-periodic graphs.

For a finite group $G$ and an inverse-closed generating set $C$ of $G$, let $Aut(G;C)$ consist of those automorphisms of $G$ which leave $C$ invariant. We define an $Aut(G;C)$-invariant normal subgroup $Φ(G;C)$ of $G$ which has the property that, for any $Aut(G;C)$-invariant normal set of generators for $G$, if we remove from it all the elements of $Φ(G;C)$, then the remaining set is still an $Aut(G;C)$-invariant normal generating set for $G$. The subgroup $Φ(G;C)$ contains the Frattini subgroup $Φ(G)$ but the inclusion may be proper. The Cayley graph $Cay(G,C)$ is normal edge-transitive if $A…
